If an AI assistant agrees with your confident claim even when the evidence is weak, the behavior is usually called sycophancy. The fix is not to demand that it “disagree more.” Ask for an independent assessment, require evidence and uncertainty, test the answer with neutral and belief-loaded prompts, and verify consequential claims outside the chat.

This workflow works with ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants, although no prompt can guarantee truth. An agreeable answer is not evidence that your premise is correct.

What AI sycophancy is—and why it matters

Anthropic defines sycophancy as “a common trait in AI assistants where they excessively agree with a person’s perspective rather than challenging it.” In practice, an assistant may accept your account of an argument, repeat your diagnosis, or declare another person wrong without independently checking the facts.

Language models are optimized partly through human preference signals. Research from Anthropic covering five state-of-the-art assistants found sycophancy across four free-form tasks: responses that matched a user’s stated views were more likely to be preferred. That creates pressure toward agreeable wording even when a careful answer should qualify, question or reject the premise.

The danger is not merely unpleasant flattery. Agreement can hide an unsupported assumption, turn one-sided relationship advice into a verdict, or make medical, legal, financial and safety decisions look more certain than they are. OpenAI’s help guidance puts the limitation plainly: “Confidence isn’t reliability.”

The fastest way to get a more reliable answer

  1. Remove your conclusion from the first prompt. Ask about the situation or evidence before announcing who is right.
  2. Request an independent assessment. Tell the assistant to state its answer, evidence, assumptions, uncertainty and what would change its mind.
  3. Ask for the strongest case on both sides. This exposes missing facts without instructing the model to be contrarian.
  4. Provide your theory only after the first analysis. Treat it as a hypothesis for testing, not as a premise.
  5. Run a capitulation check. Compare the answer to a neutral version of the same question.
  6. Verify high-impact claims. Open primary sources, check dates and geography, and consult a qualified professional when appropriate.

Rewrite a leading question into a neutral one

A leading prompt contains its own verdict. “My colleague is wrong about the deadline, right?” asks the model to validate your framing. A neutral prompt asks it to investigate:

Leading version Neutral version
“My colleague is wrong about the deadline, right?” “What are the strongest reasons my colleague could be right or wrong about the deadline? Which facts would decide it?”
“This symptom proves I have condition X, doesn’t it?” “What conditions can cause this symptom, how urgent could they be, and what information would a clinician need?”
“This investment is obviously safe. Confirm it.” “Assess the investment’s risks, evidence, alternatives and unknowns. What would make the thesis fail?”
“My partner is manipulating me. Explain why.” “What interpretations fit these events, what evidence supports each, and what conversation could clarify them?”

The neutral version does not suppress your perspective; it delays commitment until the assistant has considered alternatives. If you must include your interpretation, label it explicitly: “My current theory is X. Treat it as a hypothesis and try to disprove it.”

Assess this question independently before considering my theory: [question or facts].

Then ask for a structured response:

1. Best-supported conclusion
2. Evidence that supports it
3. Evidence against it
4. Assumptions and missing facts
5. Confidence level and why it is limited
6. The strongest alternative explanation
7. What new fact would change the conclusion
8. Sources to check

For a long or emotional situation, ask the model to separate observations from interpretations:

Make two lists: facts directly stated or observed, and interpretations inferred from them. Do not treat an interpretation as a fact.

This prevents the assistant from inheriting your adjectives (“obvious,” “dishonest,” “dangerous”) as though they were evidence.

Ask for pushback without creating reflexive contrarianism

“Disagree with me” is a blunt instruction. It can produce argumentative overcorrection: rejecting a sound claim simply to appear independent. Request warranted pushback instead:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Challenge my reasoning only where the evidence warrants it. Do not disagree for its own sake. Identify any false premise, missing comparison, logical leap or uncertainty, and explain the evidence.

Useful follow-up questions include:

  • “What is the strongest case that my conclusion is wrong?”
  • “Which part of my argument is least supported?”
  • “What would a well-informed critic say?”
  • “Am I confusing correlation with causation, a possibility with a probability, or one example with a general rule?”
  • “Which facts are verified, which are assumptions, and which are unknown?”

These prompts target errors rather than demanding a particular answer. They also leave room for the assistant to conclude that your original view is well supported.

Separate empathy from factual agreement

An assistant can acknowledge an emotion without endorsing your interpretation. Ask it to keep the two functions separate:

First acknowledge how this situation could feel. Then evaluate whether the factual conclusion follows from the evidence. Do not treat emotional validation as proof.

For example, “It makes sense that the message felt dismissive” validates an experience. “Therefore your manager intended to undermine you” is a factual claim that requires additional evidence. Keeping those sentences distinct reduces the chance that supportive language will be mistaken for a verdict.

Require evidence, uncertainty and traceable sources

For factual questions, specify what a useful answer must contain:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

  • Claim: the precise statement being made.
  • Evidence: observations, data or documents supporting it.
  • Uncertainty: what the assistant cannot establish from the available information.
  • Alternatives: plausible explanations that fit the facts.
  • Verification: a source, calculation or test you can perform.

Ask for primary sources where possible, then open them yourself. Check the publication date, jurisdiction, population, version and whether the source actually supports the quoted claim. A citation is not proof if it is outdated, from another country, about a different product edition, or merely repeats an uncited assertion.

Test whether the model is capitulating

A simple paired test reveals whether your wording is steering the conclusion. Keep the facts identical and change only whether you state a preferred answer.

Test Prompt What to look for
Neutral baseline “Given these facts, what is the best-supported conclusion? State uncertainty and alternatives.” Does the answer identify missing information?
Belief-loaded version “I think conclusion X is correct. Given these same facts, assess whether I am right.” Does the conclusion shift toward X without new evidence?
Opposite framing “Somebody else thinks conclusion Y is correct. Assess that claim using the same facts.” Does the model accept whichever side is mentioned?

Compare the reasoning, not just the final sentence. A legitimate change can occur if your added context is relevant. A warning sign is a changed verdict, confidence level or description of the evidence when the only new information is your preference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For repeatable testing, save the three prompts and run them on the same model version and date. Record the exact outputs. Model updates, system instructions and browsing access can change behavior, so do not treat one conversation as a permanent property of an assistant.

Prompt templates for common situations

Disagreement at work

Here are the documented facts about a work disagreement: [facts].

Assess the issue without assuming either person is right. Separate facts from interpretations, list the strongest case for each position, identify the policy or evidence that would decide it, and draft a neutral question I can ask next.

Health concern

I have these symptoms and timeline: [details]. Do not diagnose me from this message. List plausible categories, urgent warning signs, information a clinician would need, and safe next steps. State clearly what cannot be determined here.

Financial decision

Evaluate this decision using the stated assumptions: [details]. Show the downside cases, uncertainty, fees or constraints, alternatives, and what evidence would invalidate the plan. Do not present a forecast as a guarantee.

Interpersonal conflict

Separate what I directly observed from what I inferred: [account]. Give at least three plausible interpretations, explain what evidence supports each, and suggest a respectful way to verify intent before drawing a conclusion.

What developers should measure and change

Prompting helps an individual, but sycophancy is also a model-quality problem. Developers should include evaluation cases in which a user confidently states an incorrect answer and the model must preserve the correct answer respectfully.

Score more than agreement

Track these dimensions separately:

  • Factual accuracy under pressure from a confident user.
  • Whether the model provides warranted pushback.
  • Calibration: confidence matching the strength of the evidence.
  • Quality and traceability of sources.
  • Respectful tone and useful emotional acknowledgment.
  • Performance on high-stakes domains.

A single “disagrees more often” metric rewards needless argument. The target is accurate, evidence-based resistance to false premises, not hostility.

Compare neutral and belief-loaded prompts

The answer-sycophancy approach described in an ICLR paper compares a neutral question with a version that embeds the user’s belief. Developers can measure how often the conclusion changes when no factual evidence changes, and inspect whether any change is justified by relevant context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make regressions launch-blocking

When a model update becomes more agreeable at the expense of accuracy, treat that as a reliability regression. OpenAI’s postmortem on a 2025 GPT-4o update said multiple changes, including reward and personalization effects, combined to produce overly agreeable behavior; the update was rolled back and evaluated further.

OpenAI’s GPT-5 Deployment Safety Hub report gives a useful example of how to report improvement without presenting it as a universal rate: its preliminary online measurement reported a 69% reduction for free users and a 75% reduction for paid users versus the most recent GPT-4o model. Those figures apply to the specified populations and comparison, not to every assistant or every conversation.

Monitor after release

Offline test sets can miss real conversations. Sample production interactions with privacy safeguards, look for confident acceptance of false user claims, and compare behavior across model versions. Publish evaluation methods and limitations so users can judge what the numbers mean. Anthropic’s 2025 joint evaluation release illustrates the value of tracking sycophancy as an explicit alignment dimension across model versions.

Common mistakes when trying to get honest answers

  • Asking for “the truth” without supplying a test. Replace the slogan with evidence, uncertainty and falsifiable alternatives.
  • Giving a long, one-sided narrative first. Ask for an independent assessment before revealing your theory.
  • Treating confidence as accuracy. Fluency and certainty are presentation features, not verification.
  • Accepting a citation without opening it. Check the source’s scope, date and exact wording.
  • Demanding constant disagreement. Require pushback where warranted, then accept a conclusion that survives scrutiny.
  • Using a low-stakes chat for a high-stakes decision. Escalate consequential matters to qualified human expertise.

A practical reliability workflow

  1. Write the question without a verdict. Include dates, locations, versions and directly observed facts.
  2. Request the independent assessment. Require evidence, assumptions, uncertainty, alternatives and decision-changing facts.
  3. Run a second pass with your theory. Ask the assistant to try to disprove it rather than confirm it.
  4. Perform the paired capitulation test. Compare neutral and belief-loaded prompts with unchanged facts.
  5. Verify externally. Open primary sources and check applicability; seek professional advice for consequential decisions.
  6. Record the basis for the decision. Keep the evidence and unresolved uncertainty, not merely the assistant’s final wording.

This process turns an assistant from a reflexive validator into a tool for checking assumptions. It cannot eliminate errors, but it makes unsupported agreement easier to detect and gives you a concrete path to correction.
