Start by identifying where the failure occurs. A crash before the main menu, a crash while loading a match, post-update instability, graphics or simulation lag, an empty lobby list, and a mid-match disconnect are different problems with different fixes. Update the game and Windows first, disable recently added mods, then test once with a small map, lower population, default graphics, and background applications closed. For multiplayer, verify that every player has the same build, crossplay is enabled, the game is allowed through firewalls, services and privacy settings are available, the Steam account is public and online where applicable, and the computer clock is synchronized.
The sequence below follows that decision tree so you can stop applying launch-crash fixes to a network problem—or changing graphics settings when the real issue is account or service connectivity.
Use the symptom to choose the right fix
Note the exact point of failure before changing anything. Reproduce the problem once and classify it using this table.

Prepare a clean test before troubleshooting
- Record the platform and storefront. Write down whether you use Microsoft Store, Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, or Mac, and whether the failure is in a ranked match, custom lobby, 1v1, or team game.
- Update the game. Open the storefront’s library or updates area and install the current Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition build. Multiplayer players must all be on the same build.
- Install pending Windows updates. On PC, open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, restart, and test again.
- Disable custom mods. Turn off mods added or updated shortly before the problem. A new game build can expose an incompatibility. Re-enable mods one at a time only after an unmodded test succeeds.
- Use a controlled match. Choose a small map, lower the population, default graphics, and a normal zoom level. Close other game clients, browsers, launchers, recording tools, downloads, and applications that use the network.
- Reproduce once and write down the timing. Note whether the failure occurs at launch, while loading, in the first match, after several minutes, or only when joining a particular lobby. This timing determines which log and support procedure are useful.
Fix launch and in-game crashes
When the game will not launch
First update the relevant storefront and Windows. If the launcher still does nothing or closes immediately, re-add the game client or its installation folder to your firewall and antivirus allowlists. Security software can block a newly updated executable even when an older build was previously trusted.
Use the storefront-specific path: Microsoft Store launch failures and Steam no-launch cases have separate official troubleshooting instructions. Do not assume that a successful installation means the executable is permitted to run; check both Windows Security and any third-party antivirus or endpoint firewall.
When it crashes as a match starts
Disable all custom mods and reproduce with default settings. Start with a small map and lower population, then increase one variable at a time. If the clean match works, the trigger is likely a mod, map size, population load, or graphics setting rather than the account connection.
Keep the game and Windows current, and confirm the game remains in the firewall and antivirus exceptions after each major update. If the crash happens only while loading a particular scenario or mod, report that exact content and the steps immediately before the crash instead of describing it only as “random.”

When an update introduced the crash
Post-update failures commonly require a clean mod test. Turn off recently added or changed mods, restart the game, and run an unmodded match. If that succeeds, add mods back individually. Re-check security exceptions because an update can change the executable or folder that the firewall recognizes.
Black menu or display failure
A black menu is a separate support branch from a desktop crash. Begin with the current build, Windows updates, default graphics, and the recommended display resolution. On a laptop with more than one graphics adapter, select the high-performance GPU for the game. If the menu remains black, follow the official black-menu procedure and include the display adapter, resolution, and whether the issue appeared after an update in your report.
Reduce lag and improve performance
Separate graphics slowdown from simulation or network delay
Graphics slowdown usually appears as a low or uneven frame rate and becomes worse when many assets are visible. Simulation or network delay can look like units responding late even when the picture is smooth. Test both by using a small map, lower population, default graphics, and closed background applications. There is no published universal latency threshold or single hardware setting that prevents every type of lag.

Lower the load all players must process
- Create a test match on a smaller map.
- Choose a lower population limit.
- Use the recommended display resolution rather than an unnecessarily high resolution.
- Reduce excessive zoom. A very wide view exposes more units and map assets at once, increasing the work required to draw and simulate the scene.
- Close browsers, other game clients, launchers, recording applications, downloads, and any program that is using substantial CPU, GPU, memory, or network capacity.
- Limit competing devices and traffic on the same network while testing. Pause cloud synchronization, large downloads, and video streams.
Larger maps and higher populations can tax the computers of all players, so lowering these settings is useful even when only one person reports the slowdown.
Choose the high-performance GPU on a laptop
Systems with integrated and discrete graphics adapters may launch the game on the lower-power adapter. In Windows graphics settings, assign Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition to the high-performance GPU, then restart the game. Test at the recommended resolution before raising quality or zoom.
Network settings that can affect multiplayer lag
If graphics are smooth but the match stalls or players drop, inspect the network path instead of lowering every visual setting. Age of Empires Support lists these ports for firewall or network-hardware checks:

Use the ports only in the context of your own Windows, local, campus, or home-network firewall policy; do not disable the firewall wholesale. If your network administrator controls the equipment, provide the game name and these protocol/port requirements. The support guidance also mentions Host as Dedicated Server as an option that may reduce multiplayer issues. It is a troubleshooting option, not a guarantee that every connection problem will disappear.

Make lobbies visible and stop multiplayer disconnects
Match platform, build, and crossplay settings
Microsoft Store, Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam players can create and play matches together when every installation uses the same build and crossplay (also called cross-network play) is enabled. Have every player check the setting before creating the lobby.

If a friend cannot see your lobby, check the build number and crossplay toggle on both sides before changing port settings. A version mismatch can make a healthy lobby appear missing.
Allow the game through every relevant firewall
Allowlist the game in Windows Firewall and in any local, campus, router, or endpoint-security firewall that filters the connection. After an update, remove and re-add the current game client or installation folder if the old exception no longer matches. A security product may allow the launcher while blocking the game process itself.

- Check Xbox and PlayStation Network service status before assuming the installation is damaged.
- Review Xbox account privacy settings so multiplayer and cross-network play are permitted.
- Confirm the account is online, not in an offline or restricted state.
- On Steam, set the profile/account to Public and make sure Steam shows you as Online.
- On PC, install pending Windows updates, restart, then sign out and back in with the account that owns the game.
Synchronize the PC clock
On Windows, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable automatic time and time-zone settings, and use Sync now. Even a slightly incorrect clock can interfere with Live Services authentication. Restart the game after synchronization.

Understand why a match disconnects
Frequent disconnections can come from a network issue or from a bug or issue in the current build. Age of Empires Support states: If you are experiencing frequent disconnections from multiplayer matches, it may be related to a network issue, or to a bug or issue in the current build of the game.
The statement appears in the multiplayer-disconnect article updated May 28, 2026. Therefore, test both sides of the problem: verify the current build and service status, while also checking firewall rules, competing traffic, account state, and clock synchronization.
Capture the right evidence before contacting support
Do not send only “the game crashed.” Reproduce the issue once after the clean test, then collect the newest session log and a precise timeline.
Find the latest log on Windows
- Close the game after reproducing the crash or disconnect; logs are saved at the end of a session.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:UsersLOCALUSERGamesAge of Empires 2 DElogs. ReplaceLOCALUSERwith your Windows user folder name. - Sort the files by timestamp and select the most recent file. The newest timestamped file is usually the relevant one after a disconnect or crash.
Include reproduction context
- Platform and storefront, operating system, and whether the account was online.
- Whether the match was ranked, a custom lobby, 1v1, or team.
- Map type and population setting if the problem involved performance.
- Whether it was the first match after launch or happened only after several games.
- The exact moment of failure: launch, menu, loading screen, first minutes, or mid-match.
- Steps immediately before the failure, including enabling a mod, changing a setting, joining a lobby, or switching networks.
- Whether all players had the same build and crossplay enabled.
- The newest log file and a recording if available.
Submit that package through the official Age of Empires support site or forum. A timestamped log plus a reproducible sequence lets support distinguish a storefront launch fault, mod incompatibility, graphics load, service failure, and network disconnect.
