Find the failed admin-ajax.php request in your browser’s Network panel and start with its HTTP status code. A 400 usually means malformed request data, a 403 means a firewall or security layer blocked it, a 500 means PHP or another server-side component failed, and a 404 means the URL is wrong or the endpoint is being misrouted. Change one variable at a time so you can identify the actual cause instead of masking it.
This guide explains how the WordPress AJAX endpoint works, then gives a status-specific repair path for logged-in and logged-out requests.
What admin-ajax.php does
WordPress sends its AJAX requests through one central endpoint: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php. A plugin or theme should post to that endpoint rather than sending a request directly to a plugin PHP file. The endpoint loads WordPress, reads the request’s action value, and runs the PHP callback registered for that action.
The action is an arbitrary string, but it is case-sensitive and must be present on every request. For example, an action named save_profile is connected to the wp_ajax_save_profile hook for authenticated users. Visitors who are not logged in use a separate wp_ajax_nopriv_save_profile hook.

WordPress defines the JavaScript variable ajaxurl on administration screens. Public-facing pages do not receive that variable automatically. Front-end scripts should be given the endpoint URL with admin_url( 'admin-ajax.php' ), commonly through wp_localize_script() or an equivalent script-data mechanism.
Handlers should validate a nonce before processing input, perform capability and input checks appropriate to the operation, return a response, and terminate the request. A handler that omits the expected hook, action, nonce, or termination can look like an endpoint failure even when the web server is functioning normally.

check_ajax_referer( 'save_profile_nonce', 'nonce' );
// Validate permissions and request fields here.
$result = array( 'saved' => true );
echo wp_json_encode( $result );
wp_die();
}
Register both hooks only when the operation genuinely needs to work for both audiences. For a members-only action, registering the authenticated hook alone is safer.
A front-end URL and request
wp_localize_script(
'profile-script',
'myAjax',
array( 'url' => admin_url( 'admin-ajax.php' ) )
);
const payload = new URLSearchParams({
action: 'save_profile',
nonce: myAjax.nonce
});
fetch(myAjax.url, {
method: 'POST',
body: payload,
credentials: 'same-origin'
});
The important details are not the variable names in these examples; they are that the URL points to the site’s own wp-admin/admin-ajax.php, the action exactly matches the registered hook, and the nonce field matches what check_ajax_referer() expects.
First response: identify the failing request
- Open the page or administration screen where the error occurs.
- Open browser developer tools and select the Network tab. Reload the page or repeat the action.
- Filter for
admin-ajax.phpand open the failed request. - Record the HTTP status, full request URL, request method, form data or payload, response body, and timing.
- Repeat the action once in a private or incognito window. This separates a stale cookie or cached script from a site-wide failure.
Do not change several systems at once. The most reliable sequence is to test the browser, then the request data, then security layers, then plugins and themes, and finally the host. After each change, repeat the same request and record whether the status and response changed.
Quick diagnosis by HTTP status
| Status | Most likely location | First checks | Usually requires a code change? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 400 Bad Request | Browser state, request URL or fields, caching, or server input limits | Private-window test, endpoint URL, exact action, cache and request limits |
Sometimes |
| 403 Forbidden | WAF, security plugin, ModSecurity, CDN or bot protection | Security events and rules blocking admin-ajax.php |
Usually no; a rule or allow-list adjustment is typical |
| 500 Internal Server Error | PHP fatal error, plugin/theme code, memory, permissions or host resources | PHP and server logs, plugin isolation, memory and resource checks | Often, if a callback or plugin is defective |
| 404 Not Found | Wrong URL, missing file, rewrite, plugin or CDN routing | Verify the URL and the file at /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php |
Only if code generated the wrong URL or routing |
How to fix an admin-ajax.php 400 Bad Request
A 400 response means the server rejected the request as malformed or unacceptable. Start with the request itself before disabling security controls.
1. Rule out cookies, sessions and browser cache
Open the affected page in a private window and repeat the operation. If it works there, clear the site’s cookies and cached files in the normal browser, sign in again, and retry. A stale session or corrupted cookie can make an otherwise valid AJAX request fail.

2. Correct the endpoint URL
Inspect the failed request’s URL. It should resolve to the same WordPress installation that rendered the page and end in /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php. Hardcoded paths commonly break when a site moves from a root domain to a subdirectory, changes from HTTP to HTTPS, or uses a different domain for an environment.
Use the administration-screen ajaxurl variable, or generate the URL with admin_url( 'admin-ajax.php' ) for a front-end script. Do not assume that a relative string such as /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php is correct for every deployment; a subdirectory installation may require the full URL generated by WordPress.
3. Check the action field character by character
Every request needs an action parameter. Compare its spelling, capitalization, hyphens and underscores with the hook in PHP. save_profile, Save_Profile and save-profile select different hooks. A missing or mismatched action can produce an error response or a response that the JavaScript code cannot parse.
4. Confirm the nonce and payload
If the handler calls check_ajax_referer(), send the nonce field name and value that the handler expects. Check that required fields are actually present, that a serialized form has not been truncated, and that the request uses the method the handler expects. A nonce failure is normally reported in the response body, so read the response rather than relying only on the status line.
5. Exclude the endpoint from page or object caching
AJAX responses are often user-specific and should not be served from a page cache. Review your caching plugin and CDN configuration and exclude /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php from cached URLs where the product provides such a setting. One reported case was permanently resolved after excluding the endpoint from a caching plugin’s cached URLs. Apply the narrowest exclusion that fixes the request; do not disable all caching unless testing proves it is necessary.
6. Check request-size and PHP input limits
Large forms or requests with many fields can hit max_input_vars or post_max_size. A low memory_limit can also prevent processing. Review the effective PHP values at the host, not only values in a local development file. WooCommerce guidance commonly recommends more generous limits for stable operation, but the correct values depend on the host, PHP version and workload. Increase a limit only after confirming that the request reaches that limit, and coordinate the change with your host when PHP settings are managed outside WordPress.
How to fix an admin-ajax.php 403 Forbidden
A 403 usually comes from a security layer rather than WordPress’s AJAX dispatcher. The blocking component may be in front of the site, on the web server, or inside WordPress.

1. Find the layer that issued the block
Open the response headers and body in the Network panel. Then check, in order, the event logs for your CDN or web application firewall, security-plugin logs, and the host’s ModSecurity or equivalent logs. These records often show the rule ID, matched field, source IP or bot score that caused the denial.
2. Review firewall and WAF rules
Cloud-based firewalls can classify a legitimate POST as automated or malicious. Inspect custom rules and managed rules for the request path, query fields and body. One reported incident involved the Cloudflare OWASP Core Ruleset; adjusting a custom filter expression so the site’s own hostname was not treated as an attack removed the false positive. Treat that as a case-specific example, not a universal fix: confirm the exact event in your account before changing a rule.
3. Check WordPress security plugins
Security plugins such as Wordfence or Sucuri can block an AJAX request when its parameters resemble an attack, when a user is rate-limited, or when a nonce or session is considered invalid. Temporarily disable the relevant protection only long enough to reproduce the request, preferably on a staging copy. If the request succeeds, create the narrowest allow rule for the specific action or path and restore the other protections.
4. Ask the host about ModSecurity and resource rules
Hosting ModSecurity policies can reject request bodies before PHP runs. Give support the exact timestamp, URL, status, client IP, and any rule ID from the log. A host may be able to adjust one rule for the endpoint without turning off ModSecurity for the entire account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Bot-management features may challenge or deny POST requests to /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php. Test with the CDN temporarily bypassed or with a narrowly scoped bypass for this path and the required methods. Keep authentication, nonce validation and rate limiting in WordPress; an allow rule should not make the endpoint publicly unrestricted.
How to fix an admin-ajax.php 500 Internal Server Error
A 500 means the request reached a server-side component that failed. The response body may be generic, so the PHP error log and web-server error log are the decisive evidence.
1. Read the logs at the time of the request
Reproduce the error once, note the timestamp, and inspect the PHP and server logs immediately around it. A fatal error normally identifies the plugin, theme file, callback function or missing class that failed. Fix the named code or escalate the exact stack trace to the plugin author or host. Do not expose detailed error output to public visitors on a production site.

2. Isolate plugins one at a time
Back up the site and, if possible, work on staging. Deactivate plugins, reproduce the request, then re-enable them individually until the failure returns. If the error disappears with all plugins disabled, the last plugin restored is the prime suspect. Check that plugin’s AJAX hook, input validation, PHP compatibility and dependencies before replacing it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Test a default theme
If plugin isolation does not identify the cause, switch temporarily to a current default WordPress theme. A theme can enqueue a broken script, override a handler, or call a function that is unavailable in the active PHP environment. Restore the original theme after the test and address the specific error found in the log.
4. Check memory and host resources
WordPress commonly operates with a default memory limit of 64 MB or 128 MB, depending on the environment. A complex AJAX callback can exceed the effective limit even when ordinary page loads work. If logs show an allowed-memory-size error, add or adjust the following line in wp-config.php before the line that says “That’s all, stop editing”:
define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );
The value must also be permitted by the PHP configuration and hosting plan; changing WordPress’s constant cannot raise a lower server-level limit. Check CPU, process, disk and database-resource limits as well, because a host can terminate a request without a WordPress-level message.
5. Verify permissions and file integrity
Incorrect permissions, an incomplete update or a damaged file can produce a 500. Confirm that the web server can read WordPress core files and that the endpoint exists. Do not replace core files as the first response to a plugin fatal error; the log should establish that core corruption is actually involved.
How to fix an admin-ajax.php 404 Not Found
There is no single 404 remedy because the failure may occur before WordPress loads. First verify that the request URL is correct for the site’s domain, HTTPS setting and installation subdirectory. On a normal installation, the file is located at wp-admin/admin-ajax.php.
Check the generated URL
Compare the working page’s site URL with the failed request. Remove hardcoded domains and use ajaxurl in administration screens or admin_url( 'admin-ajax.php' ) on front-end pages. Check for a typo in wp-admin, an omitted subdirectory, or a request sent to a development domain.

Check rewrites, plugins and edge routing
A rewrite rule, maintenance plugin, reverse proxy or CDN can route the endpoint to a location where it does not exist. Temporarily bypass the CDN, disable the suspected routing plugin, and test the origin directly if your host permits it. Inspect web-server access and rewrite logs to see which path was handled.
Replace core only as a last resort
If the URL is correct but the file is missing or corrupted, replace the suspected admin-ajax.php with a fresh copy from the same WordPress release, after taking a backup and verifying the installation. If you cannot safely establish file integrity, ask the host to restore or verify WordPress core. A core replacement will not repair a wrong URL, rewrite rule or plugin callback.

- Back up first. Save files and the database, and prefer a staging copy for disabling security or switching themes.
- Capture a baseline. Save the status, URL, payload, response and timestamp from the Network panel.
- Run a private-window test. This identifies cookie, session and browser-cache problems without changing the site.
- Validate the request contract. Confirm the endpoint URL, HTTP method, case-sensitive
action, nonce field and required parameters. - Test caching. Exclude
admin-ajax.phpfrom relevant caches and repeat the same request. - Test security layers. Review WAF, CDN, security-plugin and ModSecurity logs; bypass one layer briefly and narrowly to identify the blocker.
- Isolate WordPress code. Disable plugins, test a default theme, and re-enable one component at a time.
- Read server logs. Match the timestamp to a PHP fatal, memory error, permission problem or host-resource limit.
- Restore protections and document the fix. Re-enable controls, retain only the narrow exception required, and record the action, rule and component responsible.
Changing one variable per test matters. If you simultaneously disable a firewall, cache, plugins and the theme, you may make the request work but lose the evidence needed to prevent the failure from returning.
Common implementation mistakes
- Using a plugin file as the AJAX URL: WordPress AJAX requests belong at
wp-admin/admin-ajax.php; the action determines which callback runs. - Assuming
ajaxurlexists everywhere: it is supplied on admin screens, not automatically on public pages. - Registering only one audience hook: logged-out visitors need
wp_ajax_nopriv_{action}; logged-in users needwp_ajax_{action}. - Changing the action’s capitalization: hook names are matched exactly.
- Skipping nonce validation: the handler should call
check_ajax_referer()before processing the request. - Returning HTML when JavaScript expects JSON: make the response format consistent and inspect the response body during testing.
- Caching a personalized response: user-specific AJAX output should not be reused for another visitor.
- Allow-listing too broadly: permit only the required path, method and rule exception instead of disabling an entire firewall or security plugin.
- Editing core first: logs and controlled isolation usually identify a plugin, theme, routing or host problem more quickly.
When to contact your host or plugin developer
Escalate after you can provide a reproducible request and have checked the obvious site-level variables. Include the exact URL, status code, timestamp with time zone, request method, action value, response body, whether the request is logged in or logged out, and the relevant log entry. For a 403, include the WAF or ModSecurity rule ID. For a 500, include the PHP fatal message and stack trace. For a 404, include the resolved domain, installation path and rewrite or CDN behavior.
Ask the host to confirm the effective PHP memory, input and request-size limits, whether ModSecurity or another edge rule blocked the request, and whether the origin can read wp-admin/admin-ajax.php. Ask a plugin developer to review the registered hooks, nonce name, expected fields and callback stack trace rather than sending only a screenshot of the browser error.
Preventing future admin-ajax.php failures
- Generate endpoint URLs from WordPress instead of hardcoding domains or paths.
- Keep the action string in one shared constant or script-data object so PHP and JavaScript cannot drift apart.
- Register the authenticated and unauthenticated hooks deliberately, not automatically.
- Validate nonces, capabilities and input before expensive work.
- Return a predictable response format and terminate every handler.
- Exclude personalized AJAX responses from page caches.
- Monitor WAF, security-plugin and PHP logs so a block or fatal is visible.
- Test AJAX features after domain, HTTPS, subdirectory, PHP, WordPress, plugin or CDN changes.
- Keep a staging environment for reproducing failures without disabling production protections.
The practical rule is simple: let the status code choose the branch, verify the request contract before changing infrastructure, and isolate one component at a time. That approach distinguishes a bad browser request from a blocked edge request, a broken callback and a misrouted endpoint without guesswork.
