Start with the UIDAI error code shown on screen. Error 400 usually means the OTP is invalid, 952 means too many OTP requests in a short period, 403 indicates an exhausted attempt or missing OTP, and biometric failures require a clean sensor, correct finger placement, or eventually a biometric update. Do not refresh or press Back during an authentication session. If retries still fail, record the code and ask the service provider for its exception-handling or alternate-identification process.
Read the error code before trying again
Aadhaar authentication can use a one-time password (OTP), fingerprint, iris, or face modality. Each request creates a transaction context, so repeating the wrong action can create a second session and make the original OTP unusable. The code displayed by UIDAI is therefore more useful than a generic “authentication failed” message.

Write down the exact code, whether you selected OTP or biometrics, the service you were trying to use, and the time of the attempt. UIDAI advises taking the code to the concerned entity because the service provider can see transaction details that are not visible to a resident.
Fix invalid or failed OTP errors
Error 400: invalid OTP
Use only the newest six-digit OTP issued for the current transaction. If several messages arrived, an older code may no longer match the active request. Type the digits manually or paste them without spaces, then submit once. Repeatedly submitting the same rejected code can consume the allowed attempts.

- Confirm that the Aadhaar-linked mobile phone is the one receiving the message.
- Read the latest OTP message and enter all six digits in the still-open authentication window.
- Do not request another code while the current request is processing.
- If the code is rejected again, select the service’s option to generate a fresh OTP and use that new code only.
- If several fresh OTPs fail, stop retrying and capture the displayed code for escalation.
An OTP is tied to a particular transaction, not merely to your Aadhaar number. A code received for one browser session may be invalid in another session.
Error 402: transaction mismatch
This occurs when the OTP and transaction identifier do not belong to the same authentication request. It commonly follows a stale page, a second browser tab, or pressing Back and starting over while the first request is still active.
- Close or abandon the stale authentication form.
- Return to the service’s normal Aadhaar verification step.
- Start one new request and wait for its OTP prompt.
- Enter the OTP generated for that exact request, without switching tabs or using an earlier message.
Error 403: attempts exceeded or no OTP generated
Error 403 means the service cannot accept another submission in the current attempt state, or an OTP was not generated for the request. Do not keep submitting the same form. Begin a fresh OTP request after the interface is ready, then use the newly generated code. If the provider continues to show 403 without delivering an OTP, retain the code and ask the provider to reset or handle the transaction through its support process.

Error 740: missing OTP data
Error 740 indicates that the request reached validation without the OTP data it expected. Slow connectivity can leave the OTP response incomplete even though the page appears ready.

- Wait for the OTP response and for all six input positions to become available.
- Enter every digit; do not submit after entering only part of the code.
- Submit once, then wait for the result rather than refreshing.
- If the field remains empty or the response never arrives, restart the transaction and request one new OTP.
Error 952: OTP flooding
UIDAI describes error 952 as more than one OTP generation within 30 seconds. Repeated taps on “Send OTP” or “Resend OTP” can trigger it, especially when a slow network makes the first request look unsuccessful. Stop requesting codes and wait for a longer resend interval before trying again. The exact delay is controlled by the service; sending more requests during the block will not shorten it.
When the wait is over, keep one authentication window open, request one OTP, and remain on that page until the message arrives. Use the newest message and ignore earlier codes.
Prevent timeout and stale-session failures
A timeout is often a session problem rather than a wrong Aadhaar number. UIDAI warns that Refresh or Back can commence a new session. Poor connectivity can also delay OTP generation until the original session has expired. The API specification documents error 504 when a session key expires or becomes out of sync.
- Use a stable mobile-data or Wi-Fi connection before starting.
- Do not refresh the page, press Back, open duplicate tabs, or navigate away after requesting an OTP.
- Do not submit before the OTP response has arrived and all six digits are entered.
- Disable actions that automatically reload the page, such as a browser’s retry prompt.
- If the screen remains unresponsive or shows a timeout, close that session and begin one clean transaction instead of reusing its OTP.
If connectivity drops, wait briefly without pressing Resend repeatedly. If the original session cannot recover, record the code, return to the service’s starting point, and create a new request. A new session requires a new OTP; an OTP from the timed-out session should not be reused.

Fix biometric authentication failure
Fingerprint and iris authentication depend on the quality of the live capture and the match against the biometrics registered with Aadhaar. A failed match does not necessarily mean the Aadhaar number is wrong.
Improve the next capture
- Clean and dry the finger and the scanner surface. Remove moisture, oil, dust, or residue.
- Place the requested finger squarely on the sensor, covering the capture area.
- Use the pressure shown by the operator or device: pressing too lightly or too hard can distort the image.
- Keep the finger still until the device confirms the capture.
- Try another enrolled finger if the first one repeatedly fails.
- For iris capture, face the camera as instructed, remove anything that obstructs the eyes, and hold the required position until capture completes.
Age, worn fingerprints, skin damage, illness, or a changed capture environment can reduce match quality. If failures continue over a period of time despite correct placement and a clean device, visit an Aadhaar update centre and request a biometric update. The operator should also verify that the scanner is connected and functioning; a resident cannot repair an operator’s device or software from the authentication screen.
Check an invalid Aadhaar number or unavailable-data error
Error 998 identifies an invalid Aadhaar number or unavailable data. First check that the number has exactly 12 digits, contains no letters or punctuation, and was copied from the intended document or record. Re-enter it rather than relying on an autofill value that may contain a hidden space or a digit from another person’s record.

- Type the 12-digit Aadhaar number again.
- Check each group of digits against the source record before submitting.
- Submit once and wait for the response.
If the number is correctly formatted but error 998 persists, the service may be unable to retrieve the associated data at that moment. Keep the code and ask the service provider to check the transaction rather than repeatedly changing a valid number.

Choose another authentication method when the service allows it
UIDAI authentication supports OTP, fingerprint, iris, and face modalities. The best choice depends on what is available to you and on the provider’s implementation.

Ask which modalities the service actually supports; availability is determined by the requesting entity and the transaction, not only by what UIDAI can technically provide. If your registered mobile is unavailable, OTP may not be practical, so ask whether a biometric, face, iris, or approved alternate-identification route is available.

Preserve the details the provider needs
- Exact error number and message.
- Date and approximate time, including your time zone if the service is remote.
- Whether the attempt used OTP, fingerprint, iris, or face.
- Whether an OTP arrived, arrived late, or never arrived.
- The service name and the stage at which authentication stopped.
- Any transaction or request identifier shown on the screen.
Do not send your full Aadhaar number or OTP in an unsecured public post. Give the service provider only the information its verified support channel requests.

When authentication fails because of a technical problem, biometric limitation, illness, injury, infirmity, or another specified reason, the Aadhaar Act, Section 8(3), requires the requesting entity to provide an alternate and viable means of identification as specified by regulations. UIDAI’s resident guidance likewise says providers must maintain exception handling so a person is not denied an entitlement solely because of technological or biometric limitations.

Tell the provider that the authentication failed and ask specifically for its exception-handling or alternate-identification procedure. This might involve another approved identity document, an assisted verification workflow, or a manual review; the exact option depends on the service and its governing rules. A provider should not tell you simply to keep retrying without addressing the displayed code.
Escalate with the code
Start with the requesting service because it initiated the transaction and can inspect its request logs. If it cannot explain the failure, use UIDAI’s official help and grievance channels and include the code, time, modality, and provider name. An error code is more actionable than a screenshot that only says “failed.”
Prevent the next authentication failure
- Confirm that the mobile phone receiving OTPs is the one registered with Aadhaar before starting.
- Use one browser tab and one active authentication request.
- Keep the phone unlocked and able to receive SMS, but do not switch away from the transaction repeatedly.
- Check the Aadhaar number’s 12 digits before submission.
- Wait for the OTP response; do not press Resend because the message is delayed by a few seconds.
- Never refresh or press Back after requesting an OTP.
- For biometrics, clean the finger and scanner and follow the device’s pressure and placement prompts.
- After a rate-limit code such as 952, wait rather than generating more requests.
- Save the exact code when a failure occurs so support can investigate the correct transaction.
A practical decision path
- See the code. Record it and identify whether the attempt was OTP or biometric.
- If it is 400, 402, 403, 740, or 952, follow the matching OTP remedy above and avoid creating parallel sessions.
- If the page timed out or shows 504, abandon the stale session and start one new request.
- If a biometric attempt failed, clean, reposition, adjust pressure, and try another enrolled finger or another offered modality.
- If the code is 998, recheck the 12-digit number and ask the provider to investigate if the format is correct.
- If the clean retry fails, stop repeating it, preserve the details, and request exception handling or an alternate identification method.
The key distinction is between a mistake you can correct locally—such as an old OTP, an incomplete six-digit entry, a dirty scanner, or a malformed number—and a transaction or infrastructure problem that requires the provider to intervene. Treat the displayed code as that distinction, not as a prompt to retry indefinitely.
