If a workflow or memory app opens without your previous session, do not reset or reinstall it first. Confirm the account, workspace, device and memory scope; verify that a session, checkpoint or history item was actually saved; then check storage and sync access. Fully quit and relaunch, install pending updates and run a short save-and-restore test. Only after local data and backups are understood should you consider sign-out, cache clearing, reset or reinstall.
A new session cannot recover state that was never persisted, was saved under another scope, or is inaccessible because the app is reading a different store. The steps below separate those causes without assuming a particular vendor, operating system or error message.
Start by identifying what “restore” failed to do
“The session did not come back” can describe several different failures. Identify the missing object before changing settings, because each one points to a different store or recovery path.
Missing conversation or history
The app starts normally, but a prior conversation, recording, document, run or history entry is absent. Look for a history, saved sessions, archive or recent-items view. If only one item is missing, the issue may be retention, filtering or the wrong account rather than a global persistence failure.

Missing preferences, instructions or memory
The app opens, but custom instructions, project context, learned preferences or a memory panel is empty. These items are often scoped differently from session transcripts. A user-level setting may survive a workspace change, while project or session memory may not.
A workflow checkpoint will not load
You can see a run, job or checkpoint, but loading it produces an error, an empty state or a loop. This is a persistence-store or compatibility problem, not necessarily evidence that the entire history is gone.
The app will not start
If the application fails before you can reach history or settings, record the startup message and use the platform’s safe, vendor-documented recovery path. Do not delete its data directory merely because the interface is unavailable.

- Application name and exact version or build.
- Device model, operating system and platform (desktop, browser or mobile).
- Signed-in account, organization, profile and selected project or workspace.
- The last session that restored correctly and the first session that did not.
- Whether the problem began after an update, account change, device migration or network outage.
- The exact error text, including capitalization and any error code.
- Whether the missing data was a transcript, file, preference, checkpoint, reminder or other object.
- Whether the app shows a sync indicator, offline state, storage warning, recovery prompt or autosave status.
Support teams can act on this information; “memory failed” alone is too broad to select a repair.
Understand why a new session may have no state
Session restoration depends on three separate events: the app must save state, the state must be written to the intended store, and the new session must open the same store and scope. A failure at any point can look identical on screen.
Persistence may be disabled or never completed
Some products have an autosave, history, retention or “store” setting. If persistence was disabled, an item was marked temporary, or the app closed before a save completed, there may be nothing to load. A new session cannot reconstruct unsaved state from memory alone.
The app may be reading a different scope
Memory can belong to a session, project, repository, workspace, user account or device. Visual Studio Code’s agent tooling is a useful example: it distinguishes user, repository and session memory. Session memory ends with the session; user memory applies across workspaces; repository memory is tied to a workspace. That model is specific to Visual Studio Code, but it demonstrates why a workspace switch can make information appear to vanish.

The store may be unavailable
State can be local, cloud-synchronized or split between both. A full disk, read-only directory, denied permission, expired sign-in, offline mode or failed synchronization can prevent a read or write. Confirm which store the target app documents before treating a database or cache as damaged.
Persistence frameworks load from an explicit store
Microsoft Workflow Foundation illustrates the underlying pattern. Its Load operation reads workflow data from an instance persistence store, while Persist and Unload write state to that store. A consumer app will use different names and implementation details, but the diagnostic question is the same: was state written, and is the current session pointed at that same store?
Use this low-risk diagnostic sequence
Perform the checks in order. Stop when the missing session returns; do not continue to destructive steps just because they are available.
- Pin down the symptom. Open the history, checkpoint, memory or settings view and determine exactly what is absent. Capture the last successful session and the full error text.
- Confirm identity and scope. Compare the signed-in account, organization, profile, project, repository and workspace with the values used previously. Check whether you are on the same device or browser profile. If the product offers a scope selector, choose the original scope before searching again.
- Verify that a restorable item exists. Look for a saved-session list, checkpoint, history entry, autosave marker or recovery banner. Check the product’s persistence, retention and privacy settings. A list with no item means the problem may be that nothing was saved; an item that fails to open indicates a loading or access problem.
- Check access to the store. Confirm network connectivity if synchronization is required, available disk space for local data and read/write permission for the app’s documented data location. Make sure the selected project, database or workspace is the expected one. Do not label a database “corrupt” unless the app’s diagnostics report corruption; a full disk and a read-only directory are different conditions.
- Fully quit and relaunch. Close every app window and background process using the platform’s normal quit command, then reopen it. Avoid force-quitting while a save, upload or migration is in progress. Recheck the same account and scope after launch.
- Install available updates. Apply the app’s supported update, then restart it. Version changes can alter storage formats or restore behavior, so record the old and new versions in your notes.
- Run a controlled test. Create a short, non-sensitive session, end it using the app’s normal close or save action, quit, reopen and test restoration. If the test succeeds, the original item may have expired, been stored under another scope or failed during its earlier save. If the test fails, preserve the error and escalate before clearing data.
Protect local data before reset, sign-out or reinstall
Reset and reinstall are not neutral troubleshooting steps. They can remove the only local copy of a session, and signing out can trigger cleanup before synchronization finishes.

| Action | What it may change | Use only after |
|---|---|---|
| Clear a cache | Temporary indexes or downloaded data; some apps also keep unsent work in cache files. | You have confirmed what the vendor classifies as cache and exported or synchronized important data. |
| Sign out | Local account data, offline records or encryption keys may be removed or become inaccessible. | The account is correct and the app documents how local data is retained and re-synced. |
| Reset application data | Configuration and local databases may be deleted and rebuilt. | You have a verified backup, export or cloud copy and have captured diagnostics. |
| Uninstall and reinstall | Platform data directories can be deleted; unsynchronized work may be lost. | Support or official documentation recommends it and recovery has been confirmed. |
As a vendor-specific warning, Wispr Flow documents that a desktop reset removes its local database and related files and then requests a fresh sync of cloud-stored notes and meetings. Its mobile guidance says signing out or reinstalling deletes local Flow data. Those rules apply to Flow, not automatically to another workflow or memory app; check the target product’s own documentation.
Vendor-specific examples and their limits
Wispr Flow: recovery is not the same as resuming
Wispr Flow’s desktop recovery offer can transcribe saved audio from an interrupted dictation. It does not resume the recording at the exact point of interruption. Its stated History recovery window is 14 days for eligible items, and settings such as Never store or Delete after 24h can make an item unavailable. Use these facts only when troubleshooting Flow; they illustrate the broader distinction between recovering content and restoring an executable session.
Visual Studio Code: scope determines lifetime
Visual Studio Code’s documentation separates user, repository and session memory. When information exists only in session memory, opening a new session is expected to lose it. When it is repository-scoped, opening another workspace will not show it. If your target app has similar scope labels, verify the scope before attempting repair; do not assume that a “memory” feature is global.
Workflow Foundation: persistence is a store operation
In Microsoft Workflow Foundation, loading reads workflow data from an instance persistence store, and persisting or unloading writes it there. The framework is not evidence about an unnamed consumer app’s database or user interface. It is a useful conceptual test: identify the write event, the store, and the read event, then verify each one independently.

Match common messages to the next safe check
Support pages often use short phrases such as “Flow is having trouble loading,” “My reminder didn’t fire,” or “I sent a message and nothing happened.” These are examples of wording used in support documentation, not proof that every app uses the same labels or that a particular phrase identifies one cause.
- “Having trouble loading” or an empty history: verify account, workspace, network and storage access; then test a new short session.
- A reminder or scheduled action did not fire: check whether the item was saved, whether notifications are permitted and whether the device or account changed. Do not infer that session memory is corrupt from a notification failure.
- A message was sent but no result appeared: confirm the active project or conversation, sync status and server response. Preserve any request or job identifier shown by the app.
- Storage full, read-only storage or local-database corruption: treat each as a separate condition and follow the app’s documented diagnostic or repair path. Freeing space will not repair a read-only permission, and changing permissions will not restore a deleted database.
When exact session restoration is impossible
There are two different recovery goals:
| Goal | What success means | Evidence to seek |
|---|---|---|
| Resume the exact session | The app reopens the same state, position, pending steps and context. | A checkpoint or session record that the app explicitly marks resumable. |
| Recover the session’s content | You retrieve a transcript, audio, document, export or history entry and continue manually. | History, export, backup, recovery audio or synchronized cloud data. |
Do not promise exact continuation when the product offers only content recovery. For example, Flow’s interrupted-dictation recovery transcribes saved audio but does not continue the recording. A transcript can preserve words while losing cursor position, pending tools, temporary variables or unsent actions.
Decide whether to continue, restore or escalate
- Continue investigating locally when the account or workspace was wrong, a sync indicator is still active, or a short test restores successfully.
- Use an in-app recovery or export when history contains the item but the live session cannot resume.
- Stop changing data and contact support when the same error returns after a clean relaunch and update, the item is visible but will not load, or local and cloud copies disagree.
- Do not reset or reinstall when you cannot establish that important data is backed up or synchronized.
Compare recovery options on six questions: Is the data local, cloud-synced or both? Does the method restore the exact session or only its content? Is the scope session-, project- or user-level? Is the action reversible? Is it available on your platform? What evidence will the app expose in history, logs or diagnostics?

Prepare a useful support report
If the failure persists, send one complete report rather than a sequence of vague updates. Include:
- App name, exact version and platform.
- Device model and operating-system version.
- Account, organization and project or workspace (redact private identifiers).
- The missing object and the last time it restored correctly.
- Exact error text, screenshots or an error code.
- Whether the issue began after an update, migration, sign-in or network change.
- Storage, sync and permission status.
- Every action already tried, including relaunch, update, export, sign-out or reset.
- A safe reproduction using a small test session, if one exists.
Flow’s support guidance, for example, asks for platform, device, exact symptom, steps tried and whether the problem started after an update. Other vendors may request logs or diagnostic bundles; follow their privacy instructions and remove secrets before sending them.
Prevent the next failed restore
- Choose a memory scope deliberately: session for temporary context, project or repository for shared work, and user scope only for information that should follow you across workspaces.
- Keep retention and privacy settings consistent with the recovery window you need.
- Wait for a visible save or sync completion before quitting after important work.
- Export or back up irreplaceable transcripts, documents and workflow definitions on a schedule appropriate to their value.
- Keep the app and operating system within the vendor’s supported versions.
- Record the account and workspace used for each major workflow, especially on shared devices.
- Test restoration with a small, non-sensitive session after changing devices, accounts, storage locations or update channels.
Bottom line
A failed restore is usually a question of what was saved, where it was saved and which scope the new session is using. Establish those facts first, then check access and perform reversible actions. Preserve local data before any reset, sign-out or reinstall, and distinguish an exact resumable checkpoint from a transcript or other content that can only be recovered manually.
