When a WordPress site is not responding, first determine whether the failure affects the public site, /wp-admin, or both. Record the exact browser message and HTTP status, check the administrator email for a Recovery Mode link, and preserve the evidence in wp-content/debug.log and your host’s PHP and web-server logs before changing files. Then isolate the fault in this order: Recovery Mode, plugins, theme, database, PHP resources, and finally hosting or network controls.
Do not repeatedly refresh, delete plugins, or overwrite WordPress files without a backup. The symptom may be a fatal PHP error, exhausted memory, a database outage, a failed upgrade, a timeout, or a DNS, SSL, firewall, or authentication problem. The sections below show how to distinguish those cases and recover safely.
Start with a ten-minute triage
A precise symptom narrows the repair. Open the site in a private browser window and, if possible, test from a second network or device. Note whether the failure is constant or intermittent and whether a recent plugin, theme, PHP, configuration, or hosting change preceded it.
Map the scope of the outage
| What you can reach | What you see | Most useful next test |
|---|---|---|
Public pages and /wp-admin both fail |
Blank page, “critical error,” or HTTP 500 | Check Recovery Mode and PHP/application logs, then isolate plugins and the theme. |
Public pages work; /wp-admin fails |
Admin timeout, 500, or login loop | Inspect admin-side PHP errors, memory limits, plugins that load only in admin, and authentication or firewall rules. |
| Admin works; public pages fail | Front-end 500, blank page, or template error | Check the active theme, front-end plugins, rewrite configuration, and the PHP log for the failing URL. |
| Neither URL connects | DNS error, connection refusal, 502, 503, or 504 | Ask the host to verify server status, DNS, SSL, firewall rules, web-server logs, and resource limits. |
| Only one URL or action fails | REST, AJAX, media upload, or editor error | Use browser developer tools and WordPress Site Health to identify the endpoint, then test loopbacks and REST requests. |
Preserve the exact evidence
- Copy the complete browser message, URL, timestamp, and HTTP status. A 500 is different from a DNS failure or a 504 gateway timeout.
- Record whether the error appears for logged-in users, visitors, or both.
- Do not clear logs before saving them. Host PHP and web-server logs often contain the file and line that caused a fatal error.
- Check the administrator mailbox, including spam, for a WordPress Recovery Mode message.
If the site is handling orders, memberships, or publishing, put a short maintenance notice in place through the host or reverse proxy rather than making many unrecorded changes while visitors receive inconsistent responses.

Use WordPress Recovery Mode first
Recovery Mode was introduced in WordPress 5.2. WordPress automatically activates it when it detects a fatal PHP error during a regular page load, not during CRON or other background tasks. The administrator email contains a time-limited link to a special session. In that session, WordPress pauses the faulty plugin or theme for your administrator account and displays an error identifying the component.
- Open the Recovery Mode link from the administrator email on the same site.
- Read the error notice and note the plugin, theme, PHP file, and line number named there.
- Deactivate or update the identified component from the Recovery Mode screen. If the message points to custom code, remove or correct that code instead of simply retrying the page.
- Exit Recovery Mode and test an incognito front-end window, the login page, and a representative page or post.
- If the error returns after you leave the session, keep the component disabled and continue with log inspection before reinstalling it.
Recovery Mode does not catch every outage. It will not normally identify a server that is down, a DNS problem, a database that cannot be reached, or a failure occurring only in CRON or another background task. If no email arrives, verify that the site can send mail and proceed to the diagnostic steps below.
Turn on temporary logging without exposing errors publicly
WordPress’s debug log and the host’s logs provide the evidence needed to stop guessing. Before editing wp-config.php, make a backup and confirm that you can restore it. Add the following settings above the line that says WordPress editing should stop, using the syntax already present in your file:
define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );
Load the failing URL once, then inspect wp-content/debug.log. Also request the relevant PHP and web-server entries from your host; a reverse proxy or web server may report an upstream timeout even when WordPress has no corresponding entry.
- Fatal error or uncaught exception: identify the plugin, theme, or custom file named in the stack trace.
- Allowed memory size exhausted: determine which request and component consumed memory before changing limits.
- Maximum execution time or timeout: look for imports, backups, remote API calls, image processing, or a slow database query.
- Permission denied or failed to open stream: check ownership and permissions with the host rather than applying broad, unsafe permissions.
- Database connection or SQL errors: move to the database checks in the next section.
Debugging can reduce performance and can expose paths, queries, or other sensitive information. When you finish collecting evidence, set WP_DEBUG and WP_DEBUG_LOG back to false (or remove the temporary definitions) and ensure public display remains disabled.

Disable plugins when you cannot log in
Plugins are a frequent cause of fatal errors, conflicts, and expensive requests. If the dashboard is available, go to Plugins → Installed Plugins, deactivate every plugin, and test the failing URL. If the site recovers, reactivate plugins one at a time, testing after each activation. The first activation that reproduces the failure identifies the component to update, replace, or report.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Dashboard unavailable: rename the plugins directory
- Use FTP or your host’s file manager and open the WordPress installation directory.
- Rename
wp-content/pluginsto a temporary name such asplugins.hold. Renaming disables all plugins while preserving their files and settings. - Test the public site and
/wp-admin. If both recover, the outage is plugin-related. - Rename the directory back to
plugins. In the dashboard, all plugins may appear inactive; reactivate them individually and test each one.
If renaming the directory changes nothing, restore its original name before testing the theme or another layer. Do not delete the directory: deletion removes the files you need for controlled isolation and may destroy plugin-specific data.
Test the active theme safely
A theme can break only the front end, only the editor, or the entire bootstrap process. When the dashboard works, open Appearance → Themes and activate an unmodified standard theme that is already installed. Test the original failing URL, the home page, and /wp-admin again.
When the dashboard is inaccessible, use FTP or the host file manager to rename the active theme’s directory under wp-content/themes. WordPress will fall back to an available default theme. If no default theme is installed, upload one from a trusted WordPress source before renaming the active theme. Once access returns, install or repair the intended theme and restore any customizations from a backup rather than editing production files blindly.
If changing the theme fixes the problem, inspect the theme’s PHP error and recent changes. A theme switch can also alter menus, widgets, or page layouts, so document the original active theme and restore it only after the underlying error is corrected.

Fix database connection failures
The message “Error establishing a database connection” means WordPress could not use the database at that moment. Open wp-config.php and verify the values for DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD, and DB_HOST against the credentials supplied by your host. Do not assume DB_HOST is localhost; some hosts require a socket path or a separate database server name.
- Compare each value character by character, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Ask the host whether the database server is running and whether your account has reached a storage, connection, or resource quota.
- Check the host’s database status page and its error log for refused connections, crashed tables, or authentication failures.
- Restore the last known-good configuration if a credential change caused the outage, then rotate credentials after service is restored.
If the credentials and host status are correct but the site still cannot connect, treat the situation as potentially compromised. Preserve logs, restrict unnecessary access, and run a malware or integrity scan through a qualified security service or your host before making destructive changes.
Interpret blank pages, critical errors, and HTTP 500 responses
Blank or white screen
A completely blank response commonly indicates a PHP fatal error whose details are hidden. Check wp-content/debug.log and the PHP log, enable temporary logging with display disabled, and isolate plugins and the theme. If logs remain empty, ask the host whether PHP is executing the requested file and whether a server rule is terminating the request before WordPress starts.
“There has been a critical error on this website”
This WordPress message generally corresponds to a fatal PHP error. Use the Recovery Mode email first; it is designed to identify and pause the failing component. If Recovery Mode is unavailable, the timestamp in the PHP log and the stack trace in debug.log are the next best evidence. Do not replace core files until you have ruled out a plugin, theme, or custom-code error.

A 500 status can come from WordPress, PHP, or the web server. Compare the response for the home page, /wp-login.php, and a static file. If static files also return 500, ask the host to inspect web-server configuration, permissions, and PHP handler errors. If only WordPress routes fail, continue with plugin, theme, database, and memory isolation.

Resolve timeouts, 502/503/504 responses, and stalled admin pages
A timeout does not prove that WordPress is broken. Heavy queries, image processing, scheduled tasks, external requests, restricted shared-host resources, PHP limits, or a firewall can all exceed the gateway’s waiting period. A 502 or 504 often means a proxy could not obtain a timely response from PHP; a 503 may indicate maintenance mode or an overloaded service.
- Check whether a static file responds quickly while a dynamic page times out.
- Review PHP and web-server logs for maximum execution time, upstream timeout, worker exhaustion, or out-of-memory messages.
- Inspect CPU, RAM, entry processes, and database usage in the hosting panel, and ask the host for the account’s current limits and usage.
- Temporarily disable plugins that perform imports, backups, security scans, analytics calls, or remote API requests; reactivate them individually after testing.
- Retry from a second network to rule out a local connection or DNS cache issue.
Do not raise timeouts indefinitely. A higher limit can conceal an inefficient query and consume all available workers, making the outage worse. Fix the expensive operation or move it to a background process when possible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand loopback and REST API failures
WordPress uses loopback requests to call the site from the site itself. When you save certain settings, WordPress connects back to the site to check that the change does not break it. Site Health may report a failed loopback or REST API request even while ordinary pages load.
Investigate the specific endpoint and response code. Common causes include:
- DNS resolving the domain to the wrong address from the server;
- an expired, mismatched, or incorrectly forced SSL certificate;
- a firewall, security plugin, or host rule blocking the server’s own request;
- HTTP authentication or an IP allowlist preventing the request from reaching WordPress;
- a plugin or theme returning a fatal error only for REST or AJAX routes.
After disabling plugins for isolation, test the REST endpoint and loopback again, then reactivate plugins one by one. Ask the host to test DNS resolution and outbound HTTP from the server rather than relying only on a browser test from your computer.

Check PHP memory and execution limits
Memory settings have multiple layers. The WordPress Hosting Team’s 2026 Hosting Handbook lists defaults of 40M for WP_MEMORY_LIMIT on single-site front-end requests and 256M for WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT on administration requests. These are defaults, not guarantees: the host’s PHP memory_limit can prevent WordPress from increasing the effective limit.
Use the host’s PHP information or Site Health to compare the WordPress constants with the actual PHP limit. A memory error that appears only in the dashboard may require more admin memory, while an image or page request can exhaust the front-end limit. Increase a limit only within the amount your hosting plan permits and only after identifying the component consuming memory. If the host enforces a lower ceiling, changing wp-config.php cannot override it; ask the host for a plan or configuration that supports the workload.
Repair a failed upgrade or damaged core files
An interrupted update can leave a maintenance notice, missing files, or a mixture of WordPress versions. Before repairing core files, confirm that a recent database and file backup exists and save the current logs.
- Review the PHP and web-server logs for the failed update and verify that disk space and file permissions are adequate.
- Follow the official WordPress manual-update procedure for the version you intend to run.
- If the common-errors guidance indicates damaged core files, re-upload fresh
wp-adminandwp-includesdirectories from the matching WordPress package. - Do not overwrite
wp-content, your configuration file, uploads, or custom files during this repair. - Complete the update in the dashboard, then test the front end, login, editor, and scheduled tasks.
If the site fails immediately after replacing core files, the cause is more likely a plugin, theme, PHP-version incompatibility, database problem, or server rule than missing core files. Restore the backup and continue isolation instead of repeatedly uploading files.
When the problem is hosting, DNS, SSL, or security
Escalate outside WordPress when application-level isolation does not restore service. Give the host the exact timestamp, affected URLs, status codes, and log excerpts. Ask for checks of:
- PHP-FPM or equivalent worker status, web-server errors, and recent configuration changes;
- database availability, credentials, quotas, connection limits, and disk space;
- account CPU, memory, process, and execution limits;
- DNS records and propagation from the host’s network;
- SSL certificate validity, hostname coverage, and forced-HTTPS rules;
- firewall, Web Application Firewall, rate-limit, IP allowlist, and HTTP-authentication rules;
- outbound requests required for loopbacks, REST, updates, and external services.
Signs that warrant a security response include new administrator accounts, unfamiliar PHP files, changed passwords, redirects to unrelated domains, or logins from unexpected locations. Preserve a backup and logs, change credentials from a clean device, ask the host to contain the account, and run a malware and integrity scan. Do not restore a compromised backup over the live site without determining whether it contains the same intrusion.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Know when to stop and get specialist help
Use a WordPress professional or managed-hosting support when you cannot safely use FTP, the host file manager, database tools, or server logs; when the site contains critical transactions; or when the outage may involve compromise. Provide the specialist with the symptom map, Recovery Mode message, timestamps, log excerpts, recent changes, backup status, and every isolation step already performed. That information prevents repeated destructive tests and shortens diagnosis.
Prevent the next outage
- Maintain tested, off-site backups of both the database and
wp-content; periodically verify that a restore actually works. - Keep WordPress, plugins, themes, and PHP versions supported, and stage major updates before applying them to production.
- Monitor uptime and certificate expiry from outside the hosting account.
- Review Site Health for loopback, REST, scheduled-task, and HTTPS warnings before they become visible outages.
- Keep public debug display disabled and retain a documented process for temporarily enabling logs.
- Record hosting limits, database credentials, DNS ownership, and the location of PHP and web-server logs in a secure administrator runbook.
The safest repair order is evidence first, then Recovery Mode, plugin and theme isolation, database and resource checks, and finally host or network escalation. Following that sequence preserves settings and backups while turning an apparently unresponsive WordPress site into a diagnosable failure.
