If WordPress shows “Error Establishing a Database Connection” while pages still load, WordPress cannot open the database connection needed for dynamic content. The message does not prove that the database was deleted. A cache, static page, or already-generated response can continue serving while a new request to MySQL or MariaDB fails.
Work from least destructive to most invasive: capture the exact symptom, verify the four database settings in wp-config.php, ask the host to confirm service and account status, make a backup, then check or repair tables only when the database is reachable. Remove any temporary repair setting immediately afterward.

WordPress stores posts, pages, users, settings, plugin data, and other dynamic content in MySQL or MariaDB. PHP reads that data for each request that needs it. “Error Establishing a Database Connection” means that WordPress could not establish that connection at the time of the request. It identifies a failed connection attempt, not the reason for the failure and not proof that the database no longer exists.
A site can appear partly healthy because a page-cache layer, a reverse proxy, a content-delivery cache, or a static file is being served without a fresh database query. The home page may therefore open while /wp-admin/, login, search, comments, an API request, or a particular page fails. Treat the working front end as evidence that some delivery path works, not as evidence that the database is healthy.

The likely causes fall into four groups:
- Values in
wp-config.phpno longer match the current database name, user, password, or host. - The MySQL/MariaDB service is stopped, overloaded, suspended, quota-limited, or unreachable on its required port or socket.
- The database user exists but no longer has permission to use the named database.
- The service is reachable but one or more tables need checking, or a broader resource or security incident is affecting the server.
Do not start by deleting tables, reinstalling WordPress, or repeatedly changing passwords. Those actions can destroy evidence and will not fix a stopped service, a quota shutdown, or a network problem.
1. Capture the exact symptom before editing files
Write down what works and what fails, including the time and the full text of any error. This narrows the fault domain and gives a host enough information to correlate the event with service and error logs.

- Test a normal post or page, the login screen,
/wp-admin/, search, comments, forms, and any API-powered feature that matters to the site. - Record whether every request fails, only authenticated requests fail, or only selected URLs fail.
- Copy the exact message. “Error Establishing a Database Connection” is less specific than a message that names MySQL, PHP, a socket, an access denial, or a timeout.
- Note recent events: a hosting move, a database-password reset, a PHP or WordPress update, a plugin or theme change, an account migration, or a change to database limits.
Keep this record private if it contains hostnames, usernames, file paths, or log excerpts. Never publish a database password or paste one into a support forum.
2. Check the four database settings in wp-config.php
WordPress’s official documentation identifies an error in wp-config.php as a usual cause and calls this file one of the most important files in an installation. Open the copy in the actual WordPress installation root—the directory containing WordPress core files—not an old backup or a different staging site.
Find the definitions and compare them with the current values shown by the hosting control panel or the provider that manages the database:

Do not assume localhost is universal. A provider may require a database hostname, a non-default port, or a socket path. A port can be expressed in the host value in a form such as mysql.example.com:3307; a socket uses the path supplied by the provider. Use the exact syntax documented for that server rather than guessing.

Inspect recent edits for an accidental missing quote, extra whitespace inside a value, altered character encoding, or a PHP syntax error. Preserve the existing quote style and punctuation. Do not replace a password with a redacted value, and do not send the real file to anyone who does not need it. If you change one value, save a copy of the original first and test immediately.
A correct-looking file does not clear the database service. It only establishes that WordPress is attempting to use the values you inspected.
3. Have the host verify service, quota, suspension, and permissions
When the four values match the provider’s current records, move to the host side. Ask the provider to check these items for the exact time of the failure:
- Whether MySQL or MariaDB is running and accepting connections.
- Whether the account reached a database, disk, process, or connection quota that caused the service or account to be shut down.
- Whether the database was suspended for billing, policy, maintenance, or an administrative action.
- Whether
DB_USERstill has privileges onDB_NAME. - Whether a remote database is reachable through the required DNS name, network route, port, or Unix socket.
- Whether server logs show crashes, exhausted memory, too many connections, storage errors, or authentication failures.
WordPress’s common-errors guidance specifically lists host outages and quota shutdowns among causes and directs site owners to contact the provider. If the database is on another server, the provider must confirm the allowed source address and the required port; changing DB_HOST without that information can make the outage worse.

Give support the site’s domain, database name and user (not the password), the timestamp with time zone, the exact error, and the results of your configuration check. Ask whether they see a failed login, an unreachable endpoint, or a service-side failure. This distinction determines whether you correct a value, wait for a service recovery, or investigate damage.
4. Back up before checking or repairing tables
Make and retain a current database backup before changing tables or running a repair action. A backup gives you a recovery point if a table is more seriously damaged than expected or if a repair exposes a separate storage problem. Keep the backup somewhere independent of the affected account when possible, and confirm that the export completed rather than assuming a download succeeded.

If you cannot create a backup because the service is down, ask the host to take a provider-side snapshot or export before attempting destructive work. Do not use a repair command as a substitute for a backup.
Table repair is appropriate only after the database is reachable and the symptoms or host logs suggest table problems. It cannot restore a deleted database, fix an incorrect password, restart a stopped service, or cure an exhausted account quota.
5. Check tables in phpMyAdmin when the database is reachable
WordPress’s troubleshooting FAQ describes a phpMyAdmin workflow for table checks. Use the phpMyAdmin instance supplied by your host, and make sure you select the affected database rather than a similarly named staging or test database.
- Sign in to the host’s phpMyAdmin interface with the account or method supplied by the provider.
- Select the database named by
DB_NAME. - Select the tables you need to examine. If the host or an error message identifies particular tables, start there; otherwise ask support which tables should be checked.
- Open the actions menu and choose Repair Table when that option is available.
- Wait for the operation to finish and read the result for each table. Save the result with the timestamp.
- Test the front end, login, and the request that originally failed.
Do not run repair repeatedly just because the page still fails. A persistent failure after a clean table result points back to credentials, privileges, endpoint reachability, service health, resource exhaustion, or a security issue. If you are unsure which tables belong to the site or how to interpret an error, stop and have the host perform the check.
6. Use WordPress repair mode only for a reachable, repairable database
WordPress can expose a maintenance page when the database responds but tables need repair. Temporarily add this line to wp-config.php:
define( 'WP_ALLOW_REPAIR', true );Then visit:
/wp-admin/maint/repair.phpUse the repair action shown by WordPress, verify the site, and remove the WP_ALLOW_REPAIR line immediately when the page is no longer needed. WordPress support guidance warns that this repair page can be accessed without login credentials while the setting remains enabled. Leaving it active gives an unauthenticated visitor a maintenance interface and is an avoidable security exposure.

Repair mode is not a diagnostic shortcut for an unreachable database. If WordPress cannot connect, the page cannot perform a table repair. Restore the original configuration if the setting produces no useful page, and return to the host-side service and permission checks.
7. Turn on controlled debugging without exposing secrets
WP_DEBUG increases PHP error reporting and can help distinguish a configuration error from a plugin, theme, or database failure. On a production site, do not display detailed errors to visitors: database names, file paths, SQL statements, and credentials-related details can leak through a public error screen.
Use the host’s documented logging method or a controlled debugging configuration that records errors privately. Enable it only long enough to reproduce the failure, then return the site to its normal production setting. Review entries around the recorded timestamp for connection refusals, authentication errors, socket or port failures, PHP fatal errors, and plugin or theme calls that occur immediately before the database message.
Send the provider the exact error, timestamp and time zone, WordPress version, PHP version, database engine and version if known, recent changes, and relevant log lines with passwords and secret keys removed. Logs are more useful than a statement that “the site is down” because they show whether the failure originated in configuration, authentication, transport, the database engine, or application code.
Choose the resolution path by reachability and access

Urgency matters. A single outage immediately after a password reset usually calls for a configuration comparison. A recurring outage, a sudden increase in connection failures, unexplained files, or an account that repeatedly exhausts resources needs a broader host and security investigation rather than another one-line edit.

The cached home page works, but login and admin fail
This pattern is consistent with cached public output masking a failed dynamic connection. Test an uncached or authenticated request and follow the configuration and host checks; do not conclude that the database is healthy because the home page renders.

The error began after changing a database password
Compare the new password in the host panel with DB_PASSWORD in the active installation’s wp-config.php. Check that the user still belongs to the named database. Avoid posting the password while asking for help.
The site was moved to another host
Reconfirm all four constants, including any new database prefix, hostname, port, or socket requirement. A copied configuration can point to the old server or to a database user that was not migrated.
Only some pages fail
Record the affected URLs and whether they share a plugin, theme feature, form, search query, or API call. A selective failure can involve a database query or PHP component that the cached home page never exercises. Use controlled logs to distinguish that application path from a general connection outage.
A repair reports success, but the message returns
Check whether the database service is crashing, storage is failing, or the account is hitting a resource limit. A repaired table does not prevent a recurring service outage or repair damage caused by an underlying disk or server problem.
When to escalate as a resource or security incident
Escalate promptly when the configuration is correct and the host reports no ordinary outage. Ask for resource graphs and logs if the account is reaching memory, process, connection, disk, or database limits. Repeated crashes, unexplained load, or sudden connection exhaustion can require host-level remediation.
WordPress’s common-errors guidance also notes that a compromise is possible when the usual configuration and host checks are clean. Look for unexpected administrator accounts, unfamiliar files, altered plugins or themes, suspicious scheduled tasks, and logins that do not match your activity. Do not “fix” unexplained behavior by repeatedly rotating credentials while leaving a potentially compromised application online. Ask the host for an incident review, preserve relevant logs, and follow its containment and malware-scanning process. Change credentials only through a trusted, clean device and coordinate database, hosting, FTP or SFTP, and administrator-password changes with the investigation.

After recovery: prevent the next connection outage
- Keep a current, restorable database backup and periodically verify that an export can be opened.
- Record the provider’s database hostname, port or socket requirements and the account’s quota limits in a private operations note.
- Document which WordPress installation root is active so a future edit does not target a staging copy.
- Use a change record for password resets, migrations, PHP changes, WordPress updates, and plugin or theme changes.
- Keep production error details private; collect logs for support without displaying them publicly.
- Remove
WP_ALLOW_REPAIRas soon as a repair page is no longer required. - Ask the host what monitoring or alerts are available for database service crashes, storage pressure, connection limits, and account suspension.
- Keep contact and escalation details for the database or hosting provider where the person on call can find them.
The practical rule is simple: first prove whether WordPress is using the right endpoint and credentials, then prove that the endpoint is running and authorizes that user, and only then consider table repair. This order preserves data, avoids unnecessary changes, and gives support the evidence needed to restore a site that is only partially operational.
