If a USB drive is missing from File Explorer, first determine whether Windows can see the hardware at all. Reconnect it, try another port and another computer, then check Disk Management and Device Manager. A missing drive letter is usually a different problem from a drive that does not appear in Windows’ storage or device tools. Do not format, initialize, create a partition, or otherwise alter the drive if it contains files you need.
Why is my USB drive not showing up?
“Windows won’t recognize my USB drive” can describe several different conditions:
- The drive is detected, but has no drive letter. It may be visible in Disk Management while absent from File Explorer. Assigning a letter can make an existing volume accessible.
- The USB device is detected with an error. Device Manager may list it with a warning icon and an error code. The code determines which driver or device action is appropriate.
- The disk is offline. Disk Management can show a disk that is present but not currently online.
- The disk shows unallocated space. Creating a new volume is a setup operation, not a data-preserving repair. Do not do it when the disk may contain files you need.
- Windows sees nothing in either tool. A connection, port, computer, cable, adapter, or the drive itself may be involved. Menu-based Windows fixes cannot repair a physically failed device.
The safest order is to start with connection checks, use Disk Management to identify storage-level visibility, use Device Manager for device and driver errors, and stop before any data-destructive operation.
Before changing anything: protect the files
If the USB drive contains important documents, photos or other irreplaceable data, do not format it or create a new partition while diagnosing it. Microsoft Support states: “Formatting a volume will destroy any data on the partition.” See Microsoft’s Disk Management in Windows guidance before making any volume change.

- Do not initialize or repartition a disk containing data you are trying to recover.
- Do not repeatedly reconnect a drive that is making unusual noises or disconnecting; repeated attempts can complicate professional recovery.
Windows software can correct a drive-letter assignment or a device-driver problem. It cannot repair failed flash memory, a damaged connector or other physical failure. If the files matter and the drive remains unreadable, stop before data-altering actions and consult a qualified data-recovery provider. Recovery success is not guaranteed.
Step 1: Check the physical connection
Reconnect directly to the computer
- Disconnect the USB drive.
- Wait a few seconds, then connect it firmly to a different USB port on the computer.
- If you were using a hub, dock, extension cable or adapter, connect the drive directly to the PC for this test.
- Wait for Windows to react and check File Explorer again.
These substitutions are diagnostic, not guaranteed repairs. A different port is useful when the original port is faulty; a direct connection is useful when a hub or adapter is the source of the problem.
Test another computer
If possible, connect the same drive to another PC. A drive that works there points toward a port, adapter, driver or Windows configuration issue on the first computer. A drive that fails consistently on multiple ports and computers raises the possibility of a hardware problem, but it is not by itself a confirmed diagnosis.

Pay attention to USB-C symptoms
For a USB-C drive, inspect the connector and cable for a poor connection and try another compatible port or cable. Microsoft’s Fix USB-C problems in Windows guidance notes that an unrecognized USB device can report a problem or have a driver problem. If Windows displays a notification, record its wording or error code rather than immediately formatting the drive.
Step 2: Check Disk Management
Disk Management is Windows’ built-in tool for viewing disks and volumes and changing drive letters. Microsoft says the tool works the same way in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but these Disk Management paths remain applicable on installations that still run it.

Open Disk Management
Use any of these Microsoft-documented paths:
- Right-click the Start button and select Disk Management.
- Search for Create and format hard disk partitions, then open that result.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
Allow the lower pane time to populate. Identify the USB disk by its capacity and connection status before selecting any volume. Capacity is a safer identifier than position in the list because disk numbers can change.
If the volume is present but has no drive letter
A volume without a letter can be missing from File Explorer even though Windows can read its volume information. To assign one:
- In Disk Management, right-click the correct USB volume (the partition area, not an unrelated disk).
- Select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
- Select Add if no letter is assigned.
- Choose Assign the following drive letter, select an unused letter, and select OK.
- Close Disk Management and open File Explorer to check the new drive letter.
If Change Drive Letter and Paths is unavailable, do not force a format or new volume. That menu state indicates that this is not the simple missing-letter case, so continue with the other diagnostics.
If the disk is marked Offline
Disk Management may show the physical disk as Offline. Microsoft documents bringing an offline disk online from Disk Management. Right-click the disk label in the left portion of the lower pane and choose Online when that command is available, then check whether its volume appears.
Do not bring a disk online casually when it is repeatedly disappearing, shows other signs of failure, or contains valuable data that has not been copied. In those circumstances, avoid state changes and consider qualified recovery assistance.

If the space is Unallocated
Unallocated means Windows is not currently presenting that area as an accessible volume. Disk Management can create a new volume there, but creating and formatting a volume changes the disk’s partition structure. It is appropriate as a setup step for a genuinely new drive; it is not a safe repair for a drive that previously held files.
If you need the existing data, stop at this screen. Do not choose New Simple Volume, format the space, or accept a prompt that would overwrite the partition information. If the drive is new and empty, you can follow Microsoft’s new-volume instructions in Disk Management in Windows, but understand that this prepares the drive rather than recovers data.
If the USB disk is absent from Disk Management
Close and reopen Disk Management after reconnecting the drive and trying another port. If it remains absent while other storage devices appear normally, move to Device Manager and repeat the test on another computer. A disk absent from both Windows storage and device tools may require hardware diagnosis rather than another Windows menu operation.
Step 3: Check Device Manager for an error code
Disk Management describes storage volumes; Device Manager describes the detected device and its driver state. An error indicator here can explain why a connected USB device does not become usable.
Open the device properties
- Open Device Manager from the Start menu search.
- Expand the relevant categories and look for the USB device or an entry with a warning icon. Depending on the device, it may appear under a USB, disk-drive or portable-device category.
- Right-click the entry and select Properties.
- On the General tab, read Device status and write down the complete error code and message.
Microsoft’s Error codes in Device Manager in Windows guidance provides code-specific actions. Use the code rather than guessing from the warning icon alone.

Apply only the action that matches the code
Depending on the error, Microsoft’s guidance may call for updating a driver, uninstalling and reinstalling the device, or scanning for hardware changes. If you uninstall a device, restart or use Device Manager’s Scan for hardware changes command as the code-specific instructions direct, then reconnect the drive.
Obtain drivers from the PC maker or the device manufacturer’s official support site. Avoid unverified driver-download sites. A driver update is relevant to a driver error; it cannot restore files from failed storage hardware.
USB-C-specific errors
When the device is USB-C, compare the Device status message with Microsoft’s Fix USB-C problems in Windows article. Record the code first, because the same “not recognized” symptom can result from a connection issue, a device capability problem or a driver problem.
Choose the correct troubleshooting branch
| What Windows shows | What it means for the next step | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| A volume in Disk Management with no drive letter | Assign an unused letter through Change Drive Letter and Paths, selecting the correct volume. | Formatting a volume simply because it is missing from File Explorer. |
| A disk marked Offline | Use the documented Online command only when the disk appears stable and the data risk is understood. | Making repeated state changes on a failing or valuable-data drive. |
| Unallocated space | Treat it as a setup state. Preserve needed data and seek recovery advice before changing the partition structure. | New Simple Volume, initialization or formatting when files may be present. |
| A Device Manager entry with an error code | Record the code and follow Microsoft’s code-specific resolution; driver update or reinstall may apply. | Installing drivers from unverified download sites. |
| No entry in File Explorer, Disk Management or Device Manager | Recheck the port and connection, then test another computer. If the pattern persists, treat hardware failure as a possibility. | Assuming another Windows setting will repair a physically failed drive. |
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop changing settings when the drive is absent from both Disk Management and Device Manager after you have tried a direct connection, another port and another computer. That pattern can indicate a failed drive, cable, connector or other hardware fault, although Windows alone cannot establish which component has failed.

- 【What You Get】16 GB USB Flash Drive Thumb Drive, The default format of the usb storage flash drive is FAT32.
If the drive is empty or replaceable and repeated tests show it is not detected anywhere, replacing the drive may be a practical hardware decision. A replacement USB flash drive does not recover data from the original device; preserve the original for recovery if its files matter.
Safely remove the drive once it works
When the USB drive is accessible, close files stored on it before disconnecting. Microsoft says: “To avoid losing data, always safely remove hardware devices like USB flash drives or external hard drives before disconnecting them.” This advice appears in Safely remove hardware in Windows.
- Save your work and close any File Explorer window or application using the drive.
- Select the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon in the notification area. If it is hidden, open the notification-area overflow menu.
- Select the USB drive from the list.
- Wait for the Safe To Remove Hardware notification.
- Disconnect the drive.
If Windows says the device is in use, close the listed application or files and try the eject command again rather than pulling the drive immediately.
Common mistakes that make the problem worse
- Formatting first: formatting destroys data on the partition, according to Microsoft’s Disk Management warning.
- Creating a volume in unallocated space: this changes the disk’s structure and is not a recovery method for an existing file set.
- Changing the wrong disk: confirm the USB drive by capacity and connection before using any Disk Management command.
- Installing random drivers: use the PC or device manufacturer’s official source and the exact Device Manager code.
- Treating a hub swap as a fix: a hub or adapter change is useful only as a diagnostic comparison; it does not prove the original drive is healthy.
- Unplugging a working drive without ejecting: safely remove it first to reduce the risk of data loss.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 notes
Microsoft documents the Disk Management access paths and behavior for both Windows 10 and Windows 11. The Device Manager and safe-removal guidance also covers both versions in the linked support articles. The troubleshooting logic is therefore the same: establish whether the volume, device, or neither is visible before selecting an action.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That date does not change what Disk Management or Device Manager can display on an existing Windows 10 installation, but it does mean you should not treat Windows 10 as a currently supported operating system when planning longer-term fixes or security maintenance.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Reconnect the drive and try a different port.
- Remove hubs and adapters for the test, and try another computer if available.
- Open Disk Management with Start, search, or
diskmgmt.msc. - If a volume has no letter, assign one to the correct volume.
- If the disk is Offline, consider the documented Online action only when data risk is understood.
- If the space is Unallocated and files matter, stop; do not create or format a volume.
- Open Device Manager, read the complete Device status error code, and follow Microsoft’s code-specific guidance.
- If Windows never detects the drive across ports and computers, stop software troubleshooting and consider qualified hardware or data-recovery help.
- After successful access, use Safely Remove Hardware before disconnecting.
