Start by checking that the laptop’s USB-C port supports the dock’s required charging and video features, then verify the dock’s power adapter and host cable. USB-C describes a connector shape, not a guarantee of charging, display output, or dock compatibility. Work through the checks below before replacing hardware; the right fix depends on which function is failing and the exact laptop and dock models.
Identify what is failing
Write down the laptop and dock model, operating system, and whether the dock has its own AC adapter. Then separate the symptoms: does the dock show power, does the laptop charge, does the operating system detect the dock or its peripherals, and does the monitor display an image? These are separate paths, so a failure in one does not prove the others are broken.
Check that the laptop supports the dock
Look up the specifications for the exact laptop port and dock. A USB-C-shaped port alone does not establish that the laptop can charge through it or send video to a dock. For example, HP says its USB-C Dock G5 requires the host PC to support DisplayPort Alt Mode through USB-C for video; charging depends on the notebook implementing the relevant USB-C specifications. Thunderbolt and USB4 ports may support different arrangements, so check the manuals for both devices rather than assuming compatibility.

If the dock has no power indicator
Connect the dock’s specified AC adapter to a working outlet and to the dock, then check the indicator against the dock manual. If it remains unlit, resolve the outlet, adapter, or dock power issue before troubleshooting the laptop connection. HP’s Thunderbolt 3 dock troubleshooting guidance identifies a missing AC connection as a possible reason for an unlit dock power light.

If the dock is on but the laptop does not charge
Reconnect the host cable and check whether the laptop reports charging. Confirm from the dock and laptop documentation that the dock, its power supply, the cable, and the laptop support the required USB-C Power Delivery arrangement and wattage. Do not assume the dock can supply the laptop’s full required wattage, or substitute an arbitrary adapter. HP also lists a charging cable fault as a possible cause when a notebook does not charge through a dock.
There is a narrowly scoped HP exception: for the specific Modern Standby Connected charging issue affecting the listed Elite, EliteBook, Dragonfly, and ZBook G9 families with the USB-C Dock G5, HP’s documented recovery is to hold the laptop power button for 12 seconds to reset the embedded controller. Use that procedure only if your exact models and issue match HP’s charging notice; it is not a universal dock reset.

Inspect and reseat the host cable safely
- If the manufacturer’s instructions call for it, disconnect power before inspecting the cable and ports.
- Look for bent, dirty, loose, or visibly damaged connectors. Do not force a plug or wiggle it sideways.
- Reconnect the host cable straight and fully. Lenovo advises using the correct USB-C cable supplied with its dock; see Lenovo’s dock troubleshooting guidance.
- If the original cable is missing or faulty, choose a replacement only after confirming that it supports the required data, display, and power functions for your exact setup.
HP warns that angled insertion or removal can damage connector pins in a notice scoped to certain USB-C Dock G5 products and Windows 11 24H2. Its advice is to insert and remove the connector straight and aligned. If a port or plug is visibly damaged, stop repeated connection attempts and seek service. See HP’s external-monitor notice.

Reconnect the dock and check detection
- Disconnect the dock from the laptop, wait briefly, then reconnect it.
- If the dock or its peripherals still do not appear, restart the laptop and check again.
- For the specific Thunderbolt controller or USB host errors HP describes for its G6 dock, wait 20 seconds before reconnecting. That interval addresses the documented symptom; it is not a required delay for every dock.
HP’s Thunderbolt 4 100W G6 Dock troubleshooting also describes reconnecting or restarting for certain authentication and timing problems. Do not apply model-specific firmware or reset instructions to a different dock family.

If the laptop charges but the monitor is blank
- Make sure the monitor is on and its selected input matches the cable connected to the dock.
- Reseat the video cable at both ends, then test one monitor at a time.
- Use a dock output documented as supported for your host connection. Some docks have ports whose display behavior differs by host capability.
- Open the operating system’s display settings, check whether the monitor is detected, and select Extend, Duplicate, or second-screen-only as appropriate.
- Check the dock and laptop documentation for supported monitor count, port combinations, resolution, and refresh rate.
Lenovo recommends checking monitor detection, reconnecting or power-cycling the monitor, using the appropriate cable, and verifying supported resolution in its dock troubleshooting guide. HP documents G6 configurations in which a USB-C or Thunderbolt downstream display may fail on a non-Thunderbolt host with multiple displays attached. For the models and setup covered by that guidance, using a supported DisplayPort, HDMI, or alternate USB-C output may resolve the issue; check HP’s G6 troubleshooting steps before changing port arrangements.
Check display limits, sleep behavior, and updates by model
If a display works intermittently or fails after sleep, first test one monitor and temporarily reduce resolution or refresh rate. Multi-monitor bandwidth and supported port combinations can limit display modes. HP’s G6 guidance describes specific DisplayPort 1.2 or alternate-output workarounds, as well as a monitor sleep setting and a BIOS high-resolution option for particular configurations. Those are not generic settings; use them only when the exact dock guidance applies.

Check the laptop and dock manufacturer’s current firmware, BIOS, graphics, and USB-C or Thunderbolt drivers for your exact models. Follow the manufacturer’s update sequence and keep power stable during firmware installation. Avoid firmware or BIOS changes intended for a different dock family.

Decide whether to replace a cable, adapter, or dock
Replace a component only after the checks point to it. If the host cable is missing or faulty, verify that a replacement supports the dock’s required video, data, and power capabilities. If the dock lacks power, confirm the exact adapter specified for that model. Consider dock replacement only after checking host compatibility, connections, supported display arrangements, and model-specific fixes. Compatibility, charging wattage, monitor support, warranty options, and cost all depend on the particular products; the available manufacturer guidance does not establish one universally suitable replacement.
