Work through the problem in layers: power and Ethernet link, router-assigned IP address, local-network reachability, discovery, and file-sharing services. A UGREEN NAS can be online and reachable by IP while missing from an app, hostname list, or computer file browser. UGREEN’s troubleshooting guidance says a “No device found” message is usually a network or configuration issue rather than proof of a failed NAS. (UGREEN’s 24 March 2026 troubleshooting guide)

What “not appearing” actually tells you

“Won’t appear on my network” describes several different failures. The NAS might not have power, might have no Ethernet link, might not have received a local IP address, or might be reachable but hidden because discovery traffic, a firewall, name resolution, or a file-sharing service is blocked.

Use these checkpoints in order:

  1. Link: Is the NAS powered and connected to the switch or router?
  2. Address: Does the router show the NAS with an IP address?
  3. Reachability: Can your computer reach that IP on the same usable LAN?
  4. Discovery: Can the app, hostname, or network browser discover it?
  5. Service: Is the required SMB, NFS, WebDAV, or other service enabled and permitted?

Do not jump to hardware replacement because a device list is empty. The distinction between these layers determines the next useful test.

A quick decision tree before changing settings

Start with the router, because it separates most cases quickly. If the router has no client entry for the NAS, stay at the physical-link and network-connection layer. If it has an entry and an IP address, do not keep swapping cables; test that address from a computer on the primary LAN. If the web interface opens by IP, the NAS and its basic network stack are working. The remaining fault is usually discovery, hostname resolution, a file service, permissions, or a firewall rule.

Write down the result of each test, including the time and IP address. DHCP addresses can change after a reboot, and an old address copied from a previous router entry can make a healthy NAS look offline. Use the current address shown by the router or UGOS Network Connections for every test.

1. Confirm power and a complete boot

Press the NAS power button and verify that the power adapter is firmly seated at both ends. Check the outlet with another device if necessary. Wait for the normal startup sequence before judging network availability.

No lights, or an unusual blinking pattern, can mean that the NAS has not completed booting. LED meanings differ by model, so consult the documentation for your exact unit. UGREEN’s general guidance says white flashing commonly indicates activity, while orange flashing can indicate a connection or link problem; treat those colors as clues rather than universal codes. (UGREEN troubleshooting guidance)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the unit repeatedly loses power, never reaches its normal state, or shows a model-specific fault pattern, resolve that boot problem before troubleshooting discovery. A computer cannot find a NAS that is not fully running its network stack.

2. Verify the wired Ethernet link

UGREEN NAS units use a wired LAN connection. Reseat the Ethernet cable at the NAS and at the router or switch, then look for link or activity lights on the NAS and network equipment. Try another LAN port on the router or switch.

If there is still no link, test with a known-good Ethernet cable. Use an existing spare first; buying a cable is useful only if the test indicates the original cable is faulty. A Cat6 cable is a reasonable replacement for a damaged cable, but it cannot correct an IP-address, VLAN, VPN, service, or firewall problem. Avoid treating a cable purchase as the first or universal fix.

When link lights are absent and the NAS does not appear in the router’s connected-device list, keep working at this physical layer: power, cable, port, and network equipment. Do not spend time changing hostname or file-sharing settings until the router can see a connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Find the NAS in the router’s connected-device list

Open your router’s connected-device, client, or DHCP-client page. Look for the NAS by its device name or MAC address and record the local IP address shown there. Router labels vary, but the purpose is the same: determine whether the NAS received an address from the LAN’s DHCP service.

The same NAS may appear under a generic name, an old hostname, or only a hardware address. Compare the MAC address printed on the unit or shown in UGOS if the name is ambiguous. Do not assume that a familiar hostname belongs to the NAS until the address and hardware identity agree.

If the NAS is missing: repeat the cable and port tests, check that the NAS is connected to the intended router or switch, and look for guest-network or client-isolation settings. An absent entry means you should investigate the link or network path before app discovery.

If the NAS is listed: copy the current IP address exactly and continue with the same-network and direct-access tests. The router’s entry is stronger evidence of local connectivity than an empty discovery list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Make sure the computer and NAS share a usable local network

A NAS connected by Ethernet and a computer connected over Wi-Fi can communicate normally when both are on the same main LAN. They do not need to use the same physical connection type.

Compare the computer’s IP address, subnet, and gateway with the NAS address shown by the router or in UGOS Network Connections. The addresses should belong to the same local network according to your router’s configuration. If the computer is on a different subnet, discovery may fail even though both devices have internet access.

  • Guest Wi-Fi: guest networks commonly block access to wired LAN clients.
  • Client isolation: an access-point setting can prevent wireless clients from reaching local devices.
  • VLANs: separate VLANs require deliberate routing and firewall rules for NAS access.
  • VPNs: an active VPN can change routing or suppress local-network discovery.

For a clean test, connect the computer to the same primary LAN as the NAS, temporarily remove the VPN path, and avoid guest SSIDs. Restore your normal security settings after testing.

Mesh systems can make this confusing because the Wi-Fi name looks identical while a guest or isolated segment is still in use. Test from a device known to be on the primary LAN, and check whether the access point has a setting that blocks wireless-to-wired traffic. Internet access alone is not proof that local clients can communicate.

5. Test direct access by IP

Enter the NAS IP address from the router in a browser address bar. If the UGOS interface loads, the NAS is reachable even if its name or app entry is missing. That result shifts the investigation toward discovery, name resolution, file services, or firewall rules.

You can also test basic reachability from the computer with:

ping <NAS-IP>

Replace <NAS-IP> with the address recorded from the router. A reply supports local IP reachability. A timeout does not prove that the NAS is offline: a wrong address, a firewall rule, VLAN or guest isolation, or blocked ICMP traffic can all produce a timeout.

If the browser works by IP but the hostname does not, keep using the IP as a temporary access method while you repair name resolution or discovery. Do not change hardware merely because a hostname is absent. If neither browser nor ping works, repeat the address and subnet checks from a second device on the same LAN before concluding that the NAS itself is down.

6. Repair app and network discovery

For initial setup or discovery on the same local network, UGREEN directs users to find.ugnas.com. The discovery page, the UGREEN NAS app, and a computer’s network browser depend on local-network visibility; they are not interchangeable with direct IP access.

When the UGREEN app says “No device found”

  1. Confirm the phone or computer running the app is on the NAS’s primary LAN, not guest Wi-Fi.
  2. Check that the NAS appears in the router’s client list and note its IP.
  3. Disconnect or bypass a VPN for the test and inspect VLAN or client-isolation rules.
  4. Restart the app and install the current app version available for your platform.
  5. Try the NAS IP in a browser. If IP access works, focus on discovery traffic rather than power or cabling.

UGREEN’s app guidance covers iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac discovery conditions. (UGREEN NAS app and download guidance)

Keep the phone or computer awake during the first scan and run the scan after confirming it has a local address, not merely a cellular or internet connection. If one client discovers the NAS and another does not, the difference usually lies in that client’s VPN, firewall, Wi-Fi segment, or app version rather than in the NAS hardware.

When the NAS appears by IP but not by name

This pattern points to name resolution or discovery rather than a dead NAS. Use the IP address while checking Bonjour/mDNS or related local-discovery settings and firewall rules. A hostname can fail even when the underlying web or file service is healthy.

7. Check the file-sharing service and permissions

Discovery and file access are separate. A NAS can appear in an app or open in a browser while shared folders remain unavailable.

In UGOS, verify that the file service required by your client is enabled. UGREEN identifies SMB, NFS, and WebDAV as possible access protocols, but you do not need to enable every protocol:

  • Use the protocol supported by the operating system or application that will open the share.
  • Confirm that the account has permission to the specific shared folder.
  • Check whether the service is restricted to particular interfaces, subnets, or users.
  • Ensure the NAS firewall permits that service on the trusted LAN.

Bonjour/mDNS or another discovery mechanism may help a client list the NAS, but it does not replace the file service itself. If the NAS is listed yet a folder will not open, investigate service status, credentials, permissions, and service-specific firewall rules instead of repeatedly rescanning for the device.

Test with the smallest useful scope: first open the administration page, then test the selected file protocol, then test the specific shared folder with an account that is known to have access. This sequence prevents a permissions error from being mistaken for a discovery failure.

8. Check firewalls without disabling security blindly

Discovery traffic can be blocked even when direct IP access works. Review firewall rules on three places: the computer, the NAS, and the router or access point. Permit only the discovery traffic and file-service ports required on your trusted local network.

UGREEN’s firewall guidance explains that restrictive rules can make a NAS browse-invisible while leaving some direct connections available. (UGREEN’s 23 June 2025 firewall guide)

  1. Temporarily identify whether the host computer firewall is blocking the app or file browser, using its rule log or an explicit local-network permission.
  2. Inspect NAS firewall rules for discovery and the protocol you selected, such as SMB, NFS, or WebDAV.
  3. Check router or access-point settings for client isolation, guest-LAN blocking, inter-VLAN restrictions, and multicast filtering that can affect Bonjour/mDNS.
  4. Create narrow allow rules for the trusted LAN and required services.
  5. Re-enable protections immediately after the test and remove broad temporary exceptions.

A blanket firewall shutdown is not a durable fix and can expose other devices. The goal is a least-privilege rule that permits the needed service only where it is needed. If a temporary rule changes the result, record exactly which rule was changed and replace it with a scoped exception rather than leaving the firewall open.

9. Use the symptom branches after testing

Router does not see the NAS

Return to power, boot completion, Ethernet seating, cable, router port, and isolation. Test a known-good cable and another port. If the NAS still has no link and no router entry, consult model-specific support rather than changing discovery settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Router sees it, but IP access fails

Verify the address was copied correctly, compare subnets and gateways, and test from a computer on the primary LAN. Check VPN routing, VLAN rules, guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, and host or NAS firewall policy. Treat a failed ping as a clue, not conclusive proof of an offline NAS.

IP access works, but the app or hostname fails

Concentrate on local discovery, name resolution, multicast or Bonjour/mDNS behavior, and firewall permissions. Keep the IP address available as a temporary route to the NAS while correcting those settings.

The NAS is discovered, but folders fail

Confirm the appropriate file protocol is enabled, the account is authorized for the share, and the NAS and router firewalls allow that service. Discovery alone does not grant folder access.

10. Prevent the same problem from returning

Once access is restored, create a DHCP reservation for the NAS in the router if your network supports it. The reservation keeps the NAS’s local address consistent without requiring a manually configured static address on the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the NAS, router, and app software current, and document the NAS IP, chosen file protocol, and any LAN firewall rules. That record makes it easier to distinguish a changed address from a failed service after a reboot or router replacement. Recheck the router’s client list after maintenance so you know whether the NAS received the expected reservation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my UGREEN NAS appear in the router but not on my computer?

The NAS may be on a different subnet, guest network, VLAN, or VPN path, or discovery traffic may be blocked. Compare the computer and NAS addresses, open the NAS by its current IP, and then check isolation and firewall rules.

Why can I access the NAS by IP but not by hostname?

The basic network path works, so check name resolution, Bonjour/mDNS or related discovery settings, and firewall permissions. Use the IP address temporarily while correcting discovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the UGREEN NAS app say “No device found”?

Confirm the phone or computer is on the same primary LAN, not guest Wi-Fi, and disconnect any VPN for testing. Verify the router lists the NAS, update or restart the app, and test the NAS IP in a browser.

Does a failed ping mean the UGREEN NAS is offline?

No. An incorrect address, VLAN or guest isolation, firewall policy, or blocked ICMP can cause a timeout. Verify the current router address and test from a device on the same main LAN.

Do I need to enable SMB, NFS, and WebDAV together?

No. Enable the protocol required by the operating system or application you use, then verify the account’s folder permissions and the corresponding firewall rule.

Should I buy a new Ethernet cable first?

Use a known-good spare cable and another router port first. A Cat6 cable is worth buying only when that test indicates the original cable is faulty; it cannot fix IP, VLAN, VPN, discovery, service, or firewall problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I give UGREEN support if nothing works?

Provide the exact NAS model, LED behavior, whether the router lists the device, its current IP address, the network segment used for testing, and the step where access fails. Use UGREEN’s model-specific support resources.

The Bottom Line

Diagnose the layers in order: power and link, router IP, same-LAN reachability, discovery, file service, and firewall. A NAS that opens by IP is not automatically defective; it usually needs a discovery, name-resolution, permissions, or narrowly scoped firewall correction.
