A TV mount that is suddenly sagging, tilting, wobbling, or pulling away from the wall is a load-path warning, not merely a leveling problem. Stop extending or swiveling the arm, keep people away from the television, and remove the TV before repairing any moving wall plate, loose fastener, damaged anchor, or cracked mount. Use two people and the mount manufacturer’s release procedure.

With the screen safely down, trace the entire load path—from the TV’s threaded inserts and brackets to the wall plate, bolts, studs or concrete anchors, and surrounding wall. Reinstall only with compatible hardware and a level, structurally sound attachment. Replace bent or cracked parts; do not conceal movement by tightening one visible screw.

First, make the installation safe

A mount can fail at the TV brackets, tilt joints, wall plate, fasteners, anchors, studs, concrete, or the wall itself. Until you know which part is moving, treat the installation as unsafe.

  • Stop using full-motion extension and do not push, pull, or swivel the arm to test it.
  • Keep children, pets, and other people away from the TV.
  • Disconnect cables only if they can be removed without moving or lifting the television.
  • If the wall plate is shifting, drywall is bulging or cracking, a lag bolt spins, or metal is bent, plan to remove the TV before structural work.
  • Use two people for removal and reinstallation. A large screen can twist or fall even when the mount appears nearly secure.

Samsung warns that an incorrectly mounted TV can slide or fall, causing serious injury and damage. Follow the mount’s release straps or latches; do not pull forcefully, because excessive force can break the latches.

Locate the exact failure point

Have one person observe the mount while the other applies only the smallest safe hand pressure to identify movement. Do not load a questionable mount by extending the arm or hanging on it. Inspect these areas in order.

TV-to-bracket connection

Look at every screw where the vertical brackets attach to the television. All threaded inserts should contain the specified screw, with the correct washer and any required spacer. A recessed TV back normally needs spacers so the bracket sits flat without crushing the housing. A screw that is too short may not engage enough threads; one that is too long can damage internal components. Use the TV and mount manuals for the exact diameter, pitch, and length rather than substituting a similar-looking bolt.

Check that both vertical brackets are installed in the same orientation, all locking tabs are engaged, and no bracket is bent. Uneven bracket engagement can make one side appear low even when the wall plate is level.

Tilt and articulation joints

If the wall plate is immobile but the TV’s top edge falls forward, the problem may be tilt tension or an articulation joint. Inspect tension bolts, friction knobs, hinge hardware, and post-install leveling screws. Perlegear advises slightly tightening tilt-tension bolts when a TV naturally tilts downward; make equal adjustments on both sides and stop if the joint binds.

  • Comfortable View with tilt range from +10° to -5°.

A full-motion arm can droop under gravity when extended. That is different from a wall plate pulling out, a joint becoming progressively looser, or a cracked component. Never compensate for a structural movement by increasing joint tension.

Wall plate and fasteners

A moving wall plate, a lag bolt that turns without tightening, stripped threads, missing washers, cracked welds, or a plate lifting away from the wall indicates an insecure load path. Remove the television before attempting repair. Tightening one accessible screw can draw the plate against damaged drywall while leaving the other fasteners unsupported.

Inspect each lag bolt for a damaged head, bent shaft, crushed washer, or evidence that it was installed into a void. Do not reuse a questionable fastener merely because it feels tight. A bolt can have little holding power while still resisting a wrench.

Wall and anchoring method

Confirm whether the plate is attached to suitable wood studs or solid concrete. The MOUNTUP MU0008 instructions state, "DO NOT install into drywall alone." Their concrete installation uses specified concrete anchors, not ordinary hollow-wall plugs. Samsung likewise says a mount should normally attach to a stud; drywall anchors are an alternative only when the wall and anchoring system are rated for the television’s weight.

Look for cracked or bulging drywall, a widening hole, crushed plaster, moisture damage, or a stud that does not align with the plate. A stud finder can help locate edges, but verify the center with a small pilot hole or another safe method before drilling the final holes. Never assume a decorative panel, metal track, or thin partition can carry the load.

Is a little arm droop normal?

One For All states that drooping up to 5 degrees can be normal for a wall mount with extended arms because of gravity, provided the TV remains within the mount’s supported weight range. It suggests tilting the TV slightly backward to compensate. Treat that as a model-specific operating note, not a general safety rule.

Progressive sag, a wall plate that shifts, cracking, stripped fasteners, or damaged drywall is not an acceptable version of normal droop. If the screen changes position over time or movement occurs at the wall, remove it and inspect the structure instead of adjusting the viewing angle.

What to prepare before removing the TV

Gather the TV model number, exact mount model, installation manuals, a second adult, a level, the specified hand tools, a stud-finding method, a tape measure, and a container for hardware. Photograph the installation from the front and sides before disassembly. The pictures help you identify bracket orientation, cable routing, hole locations, and missing washers.

Do not improvise with longer screws, random masonry plugs, or power tools when the manual prohibits them. The MOUNTUP MU0008 instructions specifically say not to use an electric drill for its lag bolts; use the stated hand tool and tightening method.

Safe repair and reinstallation procedure

  1. Read the release procedure. Locate the mount’s pull straps, latches, or safety screws. Understand which direction the TV must move to disengage. Do not pull on the screen or force a latch.
  2. Lift the TV down with two people. One person supports each side. Place the screen face-up on a clean, padded, level surface unless the TV manual specifies another position. Keep the brackets attached until you can work safely.
  3. Document and inspect every component. Examine the TV inserts, screws, spacers, vertical brackets, tilt joints, arm pivots, wall plate, washers, lag bolts, anchors, studs, concrete, and surrounding wall. A bent plate, elongated hole, cracked weld, stripped insert, or damaged anchor is a replacement item, not an adjustment.
  4. Remove failed hardware. Take out loose or damaged bolts and anchors. If a lag bolt spins, do not keep turning it; the hole or substrate may be compromised. Repair the wall or move the plate to verified structural material.
  5. Re-establish the load path. Position the plate level and centered on suitable studs, or use the manufacturer’s engineered anchors in solid concrete. Drill into the center of each stud. Do not install into drywall alone. Use every specified hole, lag bolt, washer, and anchor; omitting one changes the design load.
  6. Tighten as directed. Use the manual’s sequence and hand tools. Tighten enough to seat the plate firmly without crushing drywall or stripping threads. An electric impact or drill can over-tighten and weaken the connection.
  7. Perform the wall-plate integrity test. Before hanging the TV, apply the manual’s specified hand test to confirm the plate does not rock, lift, or pull from the wall. MOUNTUP’s instructions require this check. Stop if any movement remains.
  8. Reattach and lock the TV. With two people, engage both sides of the mount, install safety screws or straps, and verify that each latch is fully closed. Confirm that no cable is trapped between the TV and plate.
  9. Set tilt and level adjustments evenly. Adjust post-install leveling screws and tilt-tension bolts in small, matching increments. The TV should remain in position when released. If it drifts, the joint or bracket may be damaged rather than merely under-tightened.
  10. Test conservatively. Start with the arm retracted. Check for movement, rubbing, or new wall cracks, then make only the manufacturer-approved range of motion. Do not repeatedly cycle a mount that shows structural movement.

Can you tighten a mount without taking the TV down?

Only a minor tilt-tension or post-install leveling adjustment is appropriate with the TV in place, and only when the wall plate is solid, the brackets are correctly engaged, and no wall or fastener damage is present. Use the adjustment points identified in the manual and support the screen while turning them.

Do not tighten a wall-plate lag bolt, replace an anchor, correct a spinning fastener, or investigate a shifting plate with the TV hanging. The screen’s weight can hide the failure and can release suddenly when the hardware is disturbed. Remove it first with two people.

Choosing a replacement mount

Replace the mount when its metal is bent or cracked, a pivot is damaged, the safety latch will not lock, the hardware is missing or stripped, or the mount cannot meet the TV’s requirements. Match all of the following before purchase:

  • Clearance and movement: Allow room for cables, ventilation, sound equipment, and the arm’s full travel without striking a wall or cabinet.
  • Adjustment and removal: Check for post-install leveling, tilt-tension adjustment, safety locks, and release straps that can be operated safely.
Mount type Movement Best fit Trade-off
Fixed Minimal movement; sits close to the wall A centered viewing position and the least opportunity for arm droop No viewing-angle or extension adjustment after installation
Tilting Tilts vertically within the manufacturer’s range Reducing glare or lowering the top edge above eye level Does not move the screen sideways or far from the wall
Full-motion Extends, swivels, and tilts on articulated arms Corner placement, multiple seating positions, or access to rear cables More joints, greater leverage on the wall, and more opportunity for gravity-related droop

The MOUNTUP MU0008 manual lists a maximum load of 110 lb (50 kg) and a VESA range up to 600 × 400 mm. The publication year is not stated on the fetched manual page, so verify the current manual for the exact model before relying on those figures. The MOUNTUP MU0007 manual says its wall must support five times the combined TV-and-mount weight; that is a manufacturer installation specification, not an independent safety statistic.

Wall-specific installation checks

Wood studs

Locate the actual stud centers and confirm that the plate’s required holes align with them. Use the specified lag-bolt diameter and embedment, with washers where listed. A stud edge, trim strip, or thin furring member is not equivalent to the structural center of a stud.

Solid concrete or masonry

Use only anchors specified for the mount and the concrete type. Drill the diameter and depth stated in the manual, remove dust as directed, and keep holes away from cracked or spalled masonry. Ordinary drywall anchors are not a substitute for concrete anchors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Drywall, plaster, and hollow walls

Do not attach a heavy TV mount to drywall alone unless the mount specifically provides a rated system for that wall construction and the wall can support the load. If the existing holes are enlarged or the wall is damaged, patching the surface without restoring structural support will not fix the problem.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely area Correct response
Both sides of the TV angle downward while the plate stays still Tilt tension or hinge adjustment Support the TV, adjust both tension points evenly, and replace a damaged joint.
One side is lower than the other Post-install leveling, bracket engagement, or uneven plate Verify both TV brackets are locked, then use the mount’s leveling adjustment. Reinstall the plate if it is not level.
The entire plate moves or lifts from the wall Stud, anchor, lag bolt, or wall failure Remove the TV and repair the structural attachment; do not keep tightening one screw.
A lag bolt spins without clamping Stripped hole, wrong substrate, or damaged bolt Remove the load, replace the fastener or repair the substrate according to the manufacturer’s method.
The arm droops only when fully extended Gravity and joint leverage Confirm the TV is within the rating, inspect the joints, and use the manufacturer’s permitted tension adjustment. Persistent or increasing droop requires replacement or professional inspection.
The TV will not lock onto the plate Wrong bracket orientation, obstruction, or damaged latch Remove it, compare the parts with the manual, and never rely on an unlocked latch.

When to hire a professional

Use a qualified TV-mounting or wall-repair professional when the wall is damaged, the stud or anchor path is uncertain, a lag bolt spins or strips, the mount is bent or cracked, the television is too large for safe two-person handling, or electrical wiring may be in the drilling path. LG recommends professional installation because wall mounting requires knowledge of wall type and the installation environment.

Professional help is also appropriate after water damage, in masonry that is cracked or unusually hard, with metal-stud construction, or when the replacement requires opening the wall. Ask the installer to identify the structural attachment, hardware specifications, and the final integrity check rather than simply leveling the screen.

Preventing a repeat failure

  • Keep the TV within the mount’s stated weight and VESA limits.
  • Do not hang accessories from a full-motion arm or use it as a handhold.
  • Route cables with enough slack for the intended movement but not enough to pull the TV forward.
  • After installation, periodically inspect for new tilt, loose knobs, wall cracks, or a plate that no longer sits flat.
  • Retract a full-motion arm when the TV is not being adjusted; extension increases leverage on the wall.
  • Use the exact replacement hardware specified for the TV and mount.

A safe repair ends with a stable wall plate, correctly engaged TV brackets, compatible fasteners, and no unexplained movement. If any part of that load path remains uncertain, leave the television down until the substrate, hardware, and mount have been verified.
