Start at the computer, not the monitor: select the TCL display’s specified native resolution, use 100% scaling as a clarity test, and then run Windows’ “Calibrate display color.” Next inspect the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) for sharpness, color temperature, color space and HDR. If only one input or application looks wrong, isolate that source before changing global settings. Exact OSD labels, supported resolutions and refresh-rate/color-depth combinations vary by TCL model.
Use this order to find the cause
Blur, gray-looking whites, a red cast and fuzzy text can come from different parts of the signal path. Changing several controls at once makes it difficult to know what helped, so work through the checks in order.
- Identify the scope. Open the monitor’s own OSD. If the OSD is crisp and correctly colored but Windows or an application is not, the panel is displaying a signal problem rather than proving the panel itself is defective.
- Compare sources. Check another application, another video or game, and another input if one is available. A symptom that appears only in one app, cable path or source should be troubleshot there first. TCL’s support guidance for isolating color problems uses the same change-the-source principle, although that particular page is written for TCL televisions.
- Fix resolution and scaling. Set the computer to the monitor’s specified resolution and use 100% scaling temporarily as a one-to-one clarity test.
- Calibrate in Windows. Run “Calibrate display color” to adjust brightness, gamma, contrast and font sharpness.
- Check the OSD. Review sharpness, color temperature, scenario/color-space mode and model-specific picture controls.
- Check HDR and bandwidth. HDR can make a MiniLED desktop look gray, while a high-refresh-rate and 10-bit combination may exceed the connection’s bandwidth on some models.
After each change, view the same text and neutral-gray image from the same centered seating position. That gives you a reliable before-and-after comparison.

Match the computer to the panel’s native resolution
Open your operating system’s display settings and select the resolution specified for your exact TCL model. TCL gives these examples in its monitor support guidance: 27U8 at 3840×2160 and 34Q8 at 3440×1440. They are examples, not universal specifications; use your model’s manual or specification page for the correct value.

A non-native resolution forces the monitor or graphics driver to resample the image. Fine text and thin lines can then look soft even when the monitor is functioning normally. Select the exact native resolution rather than merely choosing the highest value shown in the list.
Use 100% scaling as a diagnostic baseline
In Windows, find Settings → System → Display → Scale and layout and temporarily set Scale to 100%. TCL recommends 100% for its clarity check. This is not a requirement for comfortable everyday use: high-resolution panels often need 125%, 150% or another value for readable controls. Once you know the panel is sharp at native resolution, restore the scale that suits your eyesight.
If the native resolution or desired scale is unavailable, the graphics driver, adapter, dock or connection may be limiting the display mode. Do not assume that a missing option means the monitor supports a different resolution; verify the model’s specification and the interface in use.
Adjust sharpness only after the signal is correct
If the operating system cannot be set to the monitor’s specified resolution and scaling, TCL suggests using the monitor’s sharpness control. Sharpness is a finishing adjustment, not a substitute for a native signal. Excessive sharpness can create bright halos around letters and dark outlines around objects, so make small changes and compare ordinary body text rather than a dramatic test image.
Run Windows display calibration
Open the built-in wizard
Search Windows for Calibrate display color and open the matching calibration tool. TCL specifically recommends this workflow when color accuracy or font sharpness is poor. The wizard can guide adjustments for:

- Brightness, so dark details are visible without making the whole image glaring.
- Gamma, which controls the relationship between mid-tone input and displayed brightness.
- Contrast, so bright details remain distinct instead of clipping to white.
- Font sharpness through Windows’ text-rendering adjustment at the end of the process.
Windows labels and screens can differ between releases, graphics drivers and managed work computers. Follow the controls presented by your current version rather than relying on a single universal menu path.
Save and compare the result
Keep the same document or neutral image open while comparing the calibrated and previous settings. If the result is worse, revert to the prior profile or rerun the wizard in a consistent room-lighting condition. Software calibration cannot correct a source that is using the wrong color space, HDR mode or unsupported signal timing, so continue with the OSD and connection checks if the problem remains.
Correct a red, yellow or otherwise warm image
Inspect color temperature in the OSD
TCL states that the default color temperature on its monitor can be warm and may appear red. Open the monitor’s OSD and look for a color-temperature or color-tone control. If the menu offers a Normal, Standard, Cool or User option, compare them at the same brightness and from the same position. The exact names and available presets differ by model.
A warmer setting is not automatically inaccurate; it simply shifts whites toward yellow or red. For general desktop work, choose the mode that produces neutral whites without making blue areas unnaturally intense. If you use a User or Custom mode, make small red, green and blue changes and record the original values so you can undo them.
Check your viewing position
Look straight at the center of the screen while judging color. TCL calls out centered viewing as part of its guidance for a red-looking image. Viewing-angle changes can alter the apparent color and brightness, especially toward the edges, so do not calibrate from an oblique position.

Choose an appropriate color space
Use sRGB for ordinary desktop and web work when available
TCL says its monitors have color-gamut limitations and directs users to the OSD scenario mode to enable sRGB. If your model exposes an sRGB mode, it is the sensible baseline for documents, most web pages and other material authored for the sRGB color space. Enabling it may lock or limit some other picture controls; that is normal for a preset designed to constrain the gamut.
Do not assume every TCL menu is identical
Color-space choices are model-dependent. TCL’s 32R84 manual, for example, lists Standard, Warm and Cool options, user RGB adjustment and named color-space choices. That menu cannot be treated as a universal TCL layout. Use the manual for your exact model and firmware, and do not force a setting simply because another TCL monitor includes it.
If colors look exaggerated in one mode and subdued in another, first identify whether the application is color-managed and whether the source is sending SDR or HDR. A color-space preset changes how the monitor interprets the incoming signal; it does not repair a wrong resolution or a bandwidth-limited connection.
Turn HDR off when an SDR desktop looks gray
Recognize the MiniLED/Windows case
TCL identifies a common situation in which MiniLED colors appear gray: HDR is enabled on a Windows computer while the user is viewing ordinary desktop content. TCL explains that HDR is optimized for DCI-P3, whereas the Windows desktop and most web pages are designed for sRGB.
For that specific context, open Windows display settings, select the TCL monitor and compare the desktop with HDR turned off. If the gray or washed-out appearance disappears, leave HDR off for normal SDR work and enable it when you are actually viewing HDR content or playing an HDR game, following TCL’s recommendation.

Do not generalize this diagnosis to every TCL display
The HDR explanation is model- and content-dependent. A non-MiniLED monitor, a video application with its own HDR handling, or a source that is already outputting SDR may behave differently. If toggling HDR has no effect, return to color temperature, color-space mode, resolution and source checks instead of leaving HDR changes enabled indefinitely.
When a high-refresh-rate mode is unavailable
Understand the model-specific Q8 example
Sometimes the image is not blurry or incorrectly colored; the desired combination of resolution, refresh rate and bit depth simply cannot be selected. TCL documents a specific Q8 case over DisplayPort 1.4:

Those numbers apply only to the Q8 configuration TCL describes. They are not a specification for every TCL monitor, HDMI connection or timing. Check your model’s manual and the exact port, cable path, adapter or dock before changing bit depth or refresh rate.
Choose the priority that fits your work
- Fast motion and games: keep the highest stable refresh rate and accept 8-bit if that is the supported combination.
- Color-sensitive work: use 10-bit when the monitor and connection support it, even if refresh rate must be reduced.
- General office use: choose the stable mode that preserves native resolution and avoids intermittent black screens or signal loss.
If a setting is missing rather than merely unstable, inspect the graphics control panel and the monitor’s input information page. A connection may negotiate a lower mode than the monitor can display through a different interface.

Adjust OSD brightness first
If the center looks brighter than the sides, TCL’s monitor FAQ recommends adjusting OSD brightness. Make the change while viewing a full-screen neutral image and from a centered position. Brightness changes the overall light output; they cannot make every panel perfectly uniform.

Know when settings are not enough
If conspicuous unevenness remains across multiple inputs and after reasonable brightness adjustments, the available TCL guidance does not provide a model-specific repair procedure or a universal defect threshold. Record the model, input, resolution, refresh rate and a description of the pattern before contacting TCL support or the seller. Do not assume that replacing a cable or changing Windows gamma will correct a panel-uniformity issue.

Reset only after recording your working settings
A factory reset can remove an accidental sharpness, temperature, RGB or scenario-mode change, but it also removes settings you may want to keep. Before resetting, photograph or write down the current OSD values, Windows resolution, scaling, HDR state, refresh rate and bit depth. Then reset the monitor using the reset command shown in its own manual; TCL does not publish one universal menu path for all models.
After the reset, reapply changes one at a time: native resolution, comfortable scaling, calibration, color temperature, color space and HDR. If the original symptom returns after a particular change, you have identified the relevant branch without guessing at unrelated controls.

Because the title does not identify a model, operating system, connection or source, exact menu instructions cannot be universal. Have these details ready for TCL support:
- Full monitor model name and, if shown, firmware version.
- Computer operating system and graphics processor.
- Connection type and the port used on both devices.
- Selected resolution, refresh rate, bit depth and RGB or other output format.
- Whether the symptom appears in the OSD, every application, one application or one input only.
- Whether Windows HDR is enabled and whether the content is SDR or HDR.
- OSD color temperature, scenario/color-space mode, sharpness and brightness values.
This record lets support distinguish a software calibration issue, an unsupported signal combination, a source-specific problem and a persistent panel issue without relying on a vague description such as “the screen looks bad.”
