A stuck tablet may be frozen while powered on, black and unable to start, or stalled on a logo during startup. Those symptoms call for different steps. First identify your tablet’s brand and model, then use its manufacturer’s button sequence; restart instructions for an iPad, Galaxy Tab, and Fire Tablet are not interchangeable.
Identify what “stuck” means
Look at what the screen is doing before you press buttons:
- Frozen while on: The display is lit, but taps or buttons do not get a response.
- Black or apparently off: The screen shows nothing and the tablet does not appear to start.
- Stalled during startup: A logo or progress screen remains visible without the tablet finishing its start-up process.
Find the brand and model if you are unsure which buttons to use. Apple, Samsung UK, and Amazon publish separate procedures for their own devices; the available guidance does not establish a universal restart sequence for Android tablets.

A force restart is a sensible first step when a tablet is unresponsive. Follow only the instructions for your device family and hardware generation.

iPad
- Without a Home button: Press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button. Press and quickly release the other volume button. Then hold the top button until the Apple logo appears.
- With a Home button: Hold the Home button and top button together until the Apple logo appears.

Samsung Galaxy Tab
Samsung UK says to hold Power and Volume Down together for more than seven seconds, until the tablet reboots. If that does not work, Samsung’s page describes holding Power for up to two minutes to shut the tablet down, leaving it off for one minute, and then turning it on. These timings apply to Samsung’s Galaxy Tab guidance, not tablets in general. See Samsung UK: My Galaxy Tab freezes or is not responding.

Amazon Fire Tablet
Disconnect charging equipment, then hold Power for 40 seconds or until the tablet restarts. Reconnect power and press Power for two to three seconds to turn it on. Remove the case if it could obstruct the button. These steps come from Amazon UK: Fire Tablet isn’t turning on or charging.

Check charging if the screen is black
A black screen does not by itself establish that the tablet is dead. Check the power source and charging connection before moving to recovery or repair:
- Connect the tablet to a wall outlet with a compatible cable and adapter. Check that the outlet works.
- Make sure the cable and adapter are seated properly. If available, try a known-compatible spare cable and adapter.
- Check the charging port for debris or visible damage. Do not force an object into the port.
- Remove a case that may interfere with the connector or Power button.
- Leave the tablet connected to power before trying to turn it on again.
Amazon UK recommends charging a Fire Tablet for at least 30 minutes and notes that a charging icon may take 30 minutes to appear or the tablet to power on, depending on cable speed. Its power guidance also recommends trying another cable and adapter, using a wall outlet, and checking the USB port for debris or damage. Apple likewise advises trying a different adapter or cable and avoiding excessively hot or cold conditions in its iPad charging guidance.

A compatible spare can help diagnose a charging problem, but buying a charger is not a general fix for a frozen screen or a startup hang. Confirm the tablet’s connector and power requirements before choosing replacement equipment; no single charger is established as compatible with every tablet.
Use recovery steps if startup does not finish
iPad stuck on the Apple logo or a progress screen
For an iPad stuck during startup, including on the Apple logo or a red or blue screen, Apple’s documented recovery flow uses a computer. Connect the iPad to a computer, enter recovery mode using the button steps for that iPad, and choose Update when prompted to update or restore. Apple provides the model-specific process on its startup and frozen iPad support page. Update is the documented choice in that prompt; it is not a guarantee that every startup failure will be resolved.

Fire Tablet recovery options
Amazon also documents recovery options for Fire Tablets, but button combinations can differ on older models. Check the instructions for the exact model before entering recovery. If recovery offers a reboot option, that is different from choosing an option that wipes the device. Amazon’s power and charging help and Fire Tablet reset instructions cover its recovery and reset routes.

Do not choose a wipe or factory-reset option simply because a tablet is slow to respond. On a Fire Tablet, Amazon says a factory reset removes downloaded content, including in-app purchases, returns the device to factory settings, and deregisters it from the Amazon account. The tablet must be registered again for use. Review Amazon’s reset guidance, consider whether important content is backed up, and make sure you can access the account needed to set the device up again before confirming a reset.
When to contact the manufacturer
If the model-specific restart and charging checks do not help, or the tablet keeps freezing, use the manufacturer’s support or repair route. Samsung UK advises further troubleshooting and contacting a Samsung Service Centre or requesting repair; Amazon says a Fire Tablet that still will not turn on or charge may be eligible for warranty replacement; Apple provides a support route for iPad problems. Eligibility depends on the device, warranty, and region, so confirm it with the manufacturer rather than assuming a replacement or repair is covered.
