A stuck STX transaction is usually pending in the Stacks mempool, waiting for a miner to select it and for a block to process it. The fastest reliable fix is to inspect the transaction on the Hiro Stacks Explorer mempool, verify the sender’s nonce sequence, and then address either a missing earlier nonce or an uncompetitive fee. A normal on-chain “cancel” button is not part of Stacks; when supported, a same-nonce replacement transaction is the mechanism that can supersede a pending one.
What a stuck STX transaction means
When a wallet labels an STX transfer as pending, the transaction has generally been accepted by a node but has not yet been included in a Stacks block. It remains in the mempool, where miners can see it and decide whether to include it. A wallet’s pending badge is not definitive: wallet interfaces can lag, cache an old state, or use different wording for transactions that a node has dropped. The explorer record for the transaction is the practical source of truth.
Stacks transactions are ordered separately for each sender by nonce. The Stacks transaction guide states: “Stacks transactions must be executed strictly in nonce order.” That rule explains many apparently frozen transfers. A transaction with nonce 12 cannot execute while nonce 11 is missing, rejected, or still waiting. Sending nonce 13, 14, and 15 does not jump over the gap; it creates a larger queue behind it.
Fees are another common cause. Fees incentivize miners to confirm transactions, and the fee depends on the estimated fee rate and the serialized size of the transaction. A correctly numbered transaction can therefore remain pending when its fee is less attractive than competing work.

Fix a pending transaction step by step
1. Inspect the transaction in the explorer
- Copy the transaction ID from the wallet or signing service.
- Open the Hiro Stacks Explorer mempool for mainnet, or use the corresponding network view for testnet.
- Search for the transaction ID and record its current state, sender address, nonce, fee, and age.
- Note any node-provided reason such as conflicting, too expensive, fork replaced, or stale.
The mempool view exposes pending transaction IDs, senders, fees, and age. Save a screenshot before changing anything. If the transaction is already confirmed, the wallet may simply need to refresh; do not create a replacement for a transaction that is on-chain.
2. Verify the account nonce
Compare the pending transaction’s nonce with the sender account’s current sequence. You can use the wallet’s account details or the Stacks transaction-building path commonly called fetchNonce. The official reference describes fetchNonce as checking the Hiro API first and falling back to the core-node account endpoint. Transaction builders normally fetch the nonce automatically when you do not supply one.
Do not infer the next nonce solely from the number of transactions visible in the wallet. A transaction can be hidden by a wallet, rejected by a node, or still be present in another node’s mempool. Use the account data and the explorer together, and identify the lowest nonce that has not been confirmed or otherwise resolved.

3. Repair a nonce gap
A future-nonce transaction is blocked until every lower nonce from that account is resolved. For example, if nonce 21 is pending and nonce 20 was never accepted, nonce 21 cannot execute. Locate the missing lower-nonce transaction in the wallet history, signing-service logs, or explorer search.

- Determine the lowest missing nonce.
- Reconstruct or recover the intended transaction for that nonce if you have the original parameters and signing material.
- Submit the missing transaction with the correct nonce and a fee that the wallet or signing service considers valid.
- Wait for the sequence to advance before submitting another higher-nonce transaction.
- Check the explorer again and repeat only if another lower nonce is missing.
If the original action is no longer wanted, use a same-nonce replacement only when your wallet supports it and you understand the consequence. Repeatedly broadcasting higher nonces does not bypass the gap and can fill the account’s queue.
4. Address an uncompetitive fee
If the nonce is correct and no earlier transaction is blocking it, compare the transaction’s fee with the fee environment and the transaction’s size. A larger serialized transaction requires more total fee at the same fee rate. A low fee can leave a transaction waiting while miners choose more attractive transactions.

- the intended call parameters, unless you deliberately want to replace the action.
Stacks Core refers to same-nonce replacement as ReplaceByFee. Wallets may expose this as “speed up,” “replace,” “rebroadcast,” or another label, and some wallets do not support it at all. Never sign a replacement whose recipient, contract call, amount, or memo you have not checked.

5. Understand what “cancel” can and cannot do
There is no universal on-chain cancel button in the Stacks transaction lifecycle. A wallet can sometimes supersede a pending transaction by submitting another transaction with the same nonce and a higher fee. This is a protocol-level replacement, not a reversal of a transaction that has already been confirmed.
A replacement may intentionally send zero value or perform a different action, but that is safe only when the signer understands the exact transaction and the wallet supports constructing it. A careless replacement can transfer funds, call a contract, or consume the nonce in an unintended way. If the original transaction has already entered a block, a replacement cannot undo it; any recovery then depends on the recipient or contract involved.
6. Check balance and account queue limits
Keep enough STX for both the transaction amount and its fee. A replacement needs additional spendable balance unless the original transaction’s funds are no longer reserved by the wallet. Check available, not merely displayed, balance before signing.

If an account has reached that limit, new submissions can fail or remain unusable until earlier transactions confirm, are replaced, or are removed. Clear the lowest blocked nonce first rather than adding more transactions to the queue.

Why a transaction can stay pending for a long time
There is no universal fixed waiting time for a pending STX transaction. Node and wallet behavior differs, and a transaction can remain visible until it is confirmed, replaced, or garbage-collected. A short-lived fork can leave a transaction waiting while nodes reconcile their view; a conflicting transaction can consume the same nonce; a fee can be too low for current miner selection; or a stale transaction can be removed without ever reaching a block.
Community guidance has described short-lived-fork cases in which pending transactions remained until garbage collection and suggested rebroadcasting with a slightly higher fee. That is operational advice, not a protocol guarantee. Treat the explorer’s current state and node reason as more useful than an assumed deadline.

Rebroadcasting is not the same as blindly sending the transaction again. A normal duplicate with the same nonce and unchanged fee may be ignored, while a replacement with an increased fee may be accepted if the node’s replacement rules allow it.

- Verify the sender, nonce, recipient or contract call, amount, and memo.
- Check that the account has enough available STX for the replacement fee.
- Use the wallet’s explicit speed-up, replace, or rebroadcast function, if available.
- Review the serialized transaction summary before signing.
- Search the new transaction ID in the explorer and monitor which same-nonce transaction remains active.
If the wallet cannot create a same-nonce replacement, do not manually guess a nonce in a generic send form. Ask the wallet provider for its supported procedure or use a signing service that documents replacement behavior.

When the explorer and wallet disagree
Wallet says pending, explorer shows confirmed
Refresh the wallet, switch to the correct network, and verify that the sender address matches. Do not replace a confirmed transaction. If the balance or application state is still wrong, the issue is likely wallet indexing, recipient processing, or the contract’s own state rather than mempool congestion.
Wallet says failed, explorer still shows pending
Use the transaction ID, not the wallet label, to determine whether a node still sees the transaction. Record the explorer status and the wallet version. A stale local status can survive after a transaction has been dropped, replaced, or garbage-collected.
Nothing appears in the explorer
Check that you searched the correct network and copied the complete transaction ID. Confirm the sender address and ask the wallet whether signing completed and broadcasting succeeded. If the wallet never broadcast the signed transaction, there may be no mempool transaction to repair.
Escalate with useful evidence
Contact the wallet provider or Stacks support when nonce and fee checks do not resolve the issue, especially if funds appear reserved or the wallet cannot expose its replacement flow. Include:
- the complete transaction ID;
- the sender address;
- the transaction nonce and fee;
- the network, clearly identified as mainnet or testnet;
- the wallet or signing-service name and version;
- the explorer status, age, and any node reason;
- screenshots showing the relevant account and transaction details.
Do not send seed phrases, private keys, recovery words, or unrestricted signing permissions to support staff. Support needs public transaction data and software-version details, not secrets.
