Start with the service’s own diagnosis rather than installing another app. If Netflix says, “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again,” disable every VPN or proxy on the device, in antivirus software, and on the network; then check the apparent country from the same connection. If the country is correct but access still fails, check your plan, reset network settings, and ask your internet provider to verify the country and IP address the service receives. If playback works but the catalog is different, that is usually a regional-availability rule, not a broken account.
First, identify what “blocked” means
Travel can trigger several different outcomes, and each has a different remedy. Do not treat a missing title, a VPN warning, and an unsupported-country message as the same fault.

A catalog difference by itself does not prove a network fault. Netflix says titles, audio and subtitle options, maturity ratings, downloads, My List items, and Continue Watching items can vary by country. Disney+ also limits viewing to content available in the region where you are connecting.
Why travel changes streaming access
Licensing follows your connection location
Streaming rights are negotiated by territory. When your device connects from another country, the service can present that country’s catalog even though your subscription was purchased elsewhere. A program in My List may disappear, a download may no longer play, or a familiar subtitle track may not be offered. Those changes are expected behavior under regional licensing.

A VPN can create the location mismatch
A VPN routes traffic through another location. Netflix says that can make the device or network appear to connect from somewhere else and may limit viewing to titles licensed globally. Its help guidance states: “You may need to turn off your VPN to see TV shows and movies that are available in your region.” A VPN inside an antivirus package counts too; so can a proxy configured on the device, router, workplace network, or hotel gateway.
The destination may not support the service
Even with a correctly reported IP address, a service may not offer playback in the country you are visiting. A location error can therefore be a coverage limitation rather than a technical defect. Check the service’s own country-availability and travel guidance before changing account settings.
Follow this troubleshooting sequence
- Record the exact message and circumstances. Note the service, device, plan type, country you left, country you are visiting, network in use, and whether all titles or only one title fails. The literal Netflix VPN/proxy warning is: “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again.” Keep a screenshot if the wording differs.
- Check whether the service is offered where you are. If the destination is unsupported, disabling a VPN will not create service rights there. If the service is offered, continue with the connection checks.
- Inspect every VPN and proxy layer. Open the device’s network settings and turn off an active VPN or manually configured proxy. Check separate VPN applications, browser extensions, security suites, and antivirus products; Netflix specifically notes that antivirus software may include a VPN. If you are on work, school, hotel, or public Wi-Fi, ask whether the network uses a proxy or filtered gateway. Also check the travel router or home router for VPN-client or proxy settings.
- Disconnect and reconnect cleanly. After disabling a VPN or proxy, close the streaming app completely, reconnect to the local Wi-Fi or cellular network, and open the app again. This forces a fresh location check instead of reusing a previous connection.
- For Netflix, verify the apparent country. While connected to the affected network, open Fast.com. Select Show more info and read the Client country value. Netflix recommends this check because it shows the country associated with that connection. If it differs from your actual location, turn off the VPN or proxy and repeat the test. If it still differs, record the displayed country and IP address for your provider.
- Check plan and feature restrictions. Netflix says VPNs are not supported for live events or for an ad-supported experience. A VPN warning may therefore appear for a feature that worked on another plan or for ordinary on-demand playback. Verify which plan is active before assuming the account is damaged.
- Reset the affected device’s network settings. Use the operating system’s reset-network option, then reconnect to Wi-Fi or cellular data and re-enter the network credentials. This removes stale VPN, proxy, DNS, or saved-network configuration, but it can also erase saved Wi-Fi networks and related settings, so have the password available.
- Restore router defaults only when necessary. If the problem affects several devices on the same home or travel router, review its VPN and proxy configuration first. A factory reset can remove custom Wi-Fi names, passwords, and provider settings; use it only when you can reconfigure the router or have the provider do it.
- Escalate with precise evidence. If Fast.com still shows the wrong country or the error survives a clean local connection, contact your internet provider. Give it the client country and IP address shown by Netflix and ask it to verify that those values match the location assigned to your connection. Netflix notes that the provider may need to work with Netflix to correct location data.
Netflix-specific checks
When Netflix displays the VPN/proxy warning
Follow the VPN and proxy checks above before changing your account. Netflix’s own advice is to turn off services that make the connection appear to originate elsewhere. Include antivirus VPNs and router-level settings; checking only the phone’s VPN toggle can miss the active cause.

When only some programs are missing
Compare the destination catalog rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app. Netflix says availability, language options, maturity ratings, and downloads can differ by country, and titles in My List or Continue Watching may not be available at the destination. That behavior does not mean the subscription was canceled.
When live or ad-supported viewing is affected
Netflix states: “VPNs aren’t supported for watching Live events on Netflix or if you’re on an ad-supported experience.” Disable the VPN even if regular, non-live playback was previously possible. Then confirm that the account is using the intended plan and retry.
Your account country is not a travel switch
Netflix states: “The country on your account can’t be changed unless you move to a new one.” A holiday or business trip is therefore not a reason to edit the account country. If you actually move, follow Netflix’s account-country procedure; do not use a location change as a workaround for a short trip.

Frequent travel between a main home and a second home
For a second home, Netflix recommends establishing a connection at the main location monthly and repeating the steps at the second location. This is an account-use procedure, not a promise that every title will be available in both places. The catalog remains subject to the country of the active connection.

Error Code 73
Disney+’s Error Code 73 guidance identifies a VPN or similar location-altering method as a possible cause. Disable the VPN or proxy, restart the Disney+ app, and retry on the local connection. The same guidance lists access from an unsupported country or region as another possible cause. If the error persists after confirming both points, contact Disney+ support.
Different catalog while abroad
Disney+ states that availability varies by location. A title absent abroad is not necessarily a sign that your subscription failed. Where the service and plan support it, Disney+ advises downloading selected titles to a mobile device before travel. A download is a contingency for an eligible title; it does not unlock a catalog item that was unavailable for download or unavailable under your plan.

Use the symptoms to choose the next test

Prepare before leaving home
Check the destination and plan
Look up the service’s official travel and country-availability guidance before departure. Confirm whether the plan supports the features you expect, especially ad-supported playback, live events, and downloads. A destination catalog can differ even when the service is available.
Download eligible titles in advance
For Disney+, download titles to a supported mobile device before leaving when that option is offered. Test the download while still at home, keep the device signed in as required by the service, and remember that downloads are title-, plan-, device-, and time-dependent. They are an offline fallback, not a method for changing the destination catalog.

Save the exact error text, the network name, and—if Netflix is involved—the Fast.com client country and IP address. This turns a vague support conversation into a location-data check. Do not assume that changing countries in an account profile will solve a travel block.

Common mistakes that prolong the block
- Installing a VPN as the first remedy. A VPN can be the cause of the warning and can restrict the catalog to globally licensed titles.
- Checking only the app’s VPN switch. Antivirus software, browsers, routers, and upstream networks can apply their own VPN or proxy.
- Assuming a missing title means the account is broken. Compare the destination catalog and the title’s download eligibility first.
- Changing the account country for a short trip. Netflix says the account country cannot be changed unless you move.
- Factory-resetting equipment immediately. Start with the least destructive checks; a router reset can erase provider and Wi-Fi configuration.
- Reporting only “it is blocked” to support. Include the service, exact message, destination, plan, device, client country, and IP address.
- Assuming one service’s rule applies to another. Netflix and Disney+ have different plan, feature, country, and error-code rules.
When there is no technical fix
If the destination does not offer the service, or the title is not licensed there, changing network settings cannot create viewing rights. Likewise, a plan restriction cannot be repaired by reinstalling the app. In those cases, use an officially supported download made before travel when available, watch an eligible title in the destination catalog, or wait until you return to a supported location. The service’s country rules and your plan determine what can be viewed; troubleshooting can correct a wrong location signal, but it cannot rewrite regional licensing.
Support checklist
Have these details ready before contacting the streaming service or ISP:
- The exact error wording or code.
- Service, plan type, device model, and app version if shown by the device.
- Your actual country and the network type (hotel Wi-Fi, mobile data, home router, or travel router).
- Whether a VPN, proxy, antivirus security suite, browser extension, or router VPN is enabled.
- For Netflix, the Fast.com Client country and IP address from the affected network.
- Whether every title fails, only one title fails, or only live/ad-supported playback fails.
- Which troubleshooting steps you already completed, including a network reset or router reconfiguration.
This information lets support distinguish an unsupported destination, a catalog difference, a plan limitation, and a misreported IP location instead of sending you through the same checks repeatedly.
