A stiff Leatherman joint is usually addressed by removing accessible grit or sticky residue, drying the tool completely, applying a small amount of PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant to the pivot, and gently moving the implement through its normal travel. Do not force a blade or improvise a model-specific teardown. If the joint remains immovable, shows corrosion, is visibly bent, or has become unusually loose, stop and use Leatherman’s repair process.

What to do first

Keep the tool pointed away from you and keep fingers clear of every blade edge. Open only the affected implement as far as it moves without force. Look closely at the pivot and the spaces between handles, blades, and other implements. The immediate objective is to determine whether the resistance comes from something you can safely remove or from a damaged mechanism.

  • Grit or lint: particles can wedge between a blade tang, handle liner, or pivot washer.
  • Sticky residue: sap, adhesive, food, or other deposits can make adjoining parts behave as if they are bonded.
  • Moisture: water left in a pivot can make movement rough and can promote corrosion.
  • Rust or other corrosion: orange, brown, gray, or pitted metal is a reason to use extra caution and consider service rather than aggressive home repair.
  • Mechanical damage: a bent implement, cracked component, distorted handle, or suddenly loose pivot is not a routine lubrication problem.

Leatherman does not publish one universal disassembly or pivot-adjustment sequence for every model. Tools differ in construction, fasteners, locking systems, and component layout, so a procedure that is safe for one model may damage another or defeat a safety feature.

Supplies and safety checks

For ordinary dirt, moisture, and stiffness, gather a mild detergent, clean water, a soft brush or swabs, a lint-free cloth, and a PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant suitable for the tool’s materials. A low-viscosity oil can also help displace moisture from a joint. Follow the lubricant manufacturer’s instructions for application and ventilation.

  • Work on a stable, well-lit surface, not while holding the tool in your hand.
  • Close or secure every blade that is not being inspected.
  • Wear eye protection if you are brushing out dried debris or corrosion.
  • Use only enough force to move an implement through its ordinary range; never use pliers, a hammer, a screwdriver, or another tool to overpower the pivot.
  • Keep cleaning fluid out of your eyes and off skin, and dispose of oily cloths safely.

Do not use acetone or brake cleaner on a tool that contains plastic components. Leatherman warns that these cleaners may damage plastic. The company’s maintenance guidance instead recommends mild detergent and water for sticky substances or debris between blades.

Step-by-step: clean, dry, lubricate, and free the joint

1. Inspect the joint without forcing it

Open the affected blade, driver, file, or other implement only until you feel resistance. Shine a light into the pivot and the narrow gaps around it. Check both sides of the tool. Identify whether the resistance is uniform throughout the movement or occurs at one particular point.

A uniform, gritty drag often indicates contamination or dried lubricant. Resistance at one point can indicate a particle, a bent component, or damage. If metal is visibly cracked, deeply pitted, or displaced, skip to the service section instead of trying to free it with force.

2. Remove accessible debris

For sticky material or debris between blades, Leatherman recommends a mild detergent-and-water solution. Dampen a cloth, swab, or soft brush and work only on areas you can reach without pushing debris farther into the pivot. A soft brush can loosen lint and dirt from the edges of the joint; swabs can lift residue from flat surfaces.

Do not flood a closed tool and assume that liquid will evaporate from the pivot. Excess water can remain trapped between liners and implements. Avoid sharp picks, knives, and metal probes that can scratch mating surfaces or slip into a blade edge. If a particle is wedged so tightly that removing it would require prying, stop rather than levering against the implement.

3. Rinse only when the contamination requires it

If detergent residue or salt is present, rinse with clean fresh water. A fresh-water rinse is particularly important after saltwater or marine exposure because salt deposits retain moisture and accelerate corrosion. Keep the rinse controlled; the aim is to remove the contaminant, not to soak the entire tool unnecessarily.

4. Dry every accessible surface and the pivot

Leatherman emphasizes cleaning and drying before relubricating. Pat the tool dry with a lint-free cloth, then leave it open in a dry, ventilated place until no visible moisture remains around the pivot or between implements. Move the affected part only as far as it travels freely so air can reach adjoining surfaces. Do not apply oil over trapped water and assume the problem is solved: moisture under lubricant can continue to promote corrosion.

5. Apply a small amount of pivot lubricant

Leatherman’s specific instruction is: “For pivoting or wear areas, use a PTFE / Teflon-based lubricant to make your tool function as smoothly as possible.” Apply a small drop to the pivot or wear area, consistent with the lubricant’s own directions. A precision nozzle or swab helps keep lubricant off cutting edges and locking surfaces.

Leatherman also describes low-viscosity oil as useful for helping force moisture out of joints. That does not mean more oil is better. Excess lubricant attracts dust, can migrate onto a blade or handle, and may contaminate surfaces that need friction to lock securely. After application, wipe away any visible film outside the pivot.

6. Work the implement gently

Move the implement back and forth through its normal range using slow, even pressure. Do not snap it open, twist the blade sideways, or hold the handle in a way that places your fingers in the path of the edge. Pause if movement becomes harder, if the implement binds at a new point, or if you hear scraping that was not present during inspection.

Several gentle cycles are safer than one forceful attempt. The lubricant needs to reach the wear surfaces, while loosened debris needs an opportunity to move out of the contact area. Wipe away expelled dirt and excess oil, then repeat only if the movement is improving and no damage is visible.

7. Check the result before returning the tool to service

With the blade or implement closed, check that neighboring tools open and close normally and that no lubricant has reached a cutting edge, lock interface, or handle surface where it could reduce grip. Reopen the repaired implement carefully. It should move smoothly through its ordinary travel without requiring abnormal force, wobbling, or stopping unexpectedly.

If the joint is still stuck after cleaning, complete drying, and a light application of lubricant, stop. Repeated force can bend the implement, damage a liner, round a fastener, or create a blade hazard.

How to handle specific symptoms

The joint feels gritty but still moves

Grit usually calls for another careful cleaning pass rather than more lubricant. Remove what is accessible with mild detergent, water, a soft brush, or swabs; rinse if necessary; and dry completely. Lubricate only after the particles and moisture have been removed. If grit continues to emerge or the pivot feels rough even when clean, the contact surfaces may be damaged and should be evaluated by the manufacturer.

The implement is stuck closed

Keep the cutting edge pointed away from you and do not insert a second tool to pry it open. Inspect for adhesive-like residue, a foreign particle, a bent tang, or corrosion at the pivot. Clean only the accessible area, dry it, and apply a minimal amount of PTFE-based lubricant. Attempt movement with gentle pressure. If it does not begin to move, treat it as a possible mechanical fault and seek service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The implement is stuck open

Do not force the locking mechanism or strike the handle. Check whether debris is blocking the lock interface or whether the implement appears misaligned. Remove accessible contamination, dry the area, and use only the lubricant recommended for pivoting or wear areas; keep oil off surfaces whose friction is required for the lock to hold. If the lock does not release normally, do not carry the tool until it has been inspected.

The joint is loose rather than stiff

Lubrication will not correct a pivot that has excessive play. A loose joint can affect blade alignment and locking behavior. Do not tighten or replace fasteners based on a generic guide: Leatherman models use different constructions, and an incorrect adjustment can damage the tool or compromise safe operation. Use the manufacturer’s service route.

There is visible rust or pitting

Surface discoloration after moisture exposure is different from deep pitting, flaking, or a component that no longer seats correctly. Rinse salt deposits with fresh water, dry the tool, and apply a light protective oil as Leatherman advises for marine exposure. Do not grind, sand, or scrape aggressively near a pivot or blade. Corrosion is excluded from the US warranty policy cited below, so document the condition and ask Leatherman about repair options rather than assuming warranty coverage.

Saltwater and marine exposure

Saltwater requires a more deliberate response than ordinary dust. After exposure, rinse the tool with fresh water to remove salt, dry it thoroughly, and apply a light oil to inhibit corrosion. Pay attention to the pivot, the spaces between implements, and any area where salt crystals are visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not store a damp tool in a sheath, vehicle console, or closed drawer. Let it dry in an open position first, then wipe off excess oil. If the tool was submerged for a long time, has visible corrosion, or develops rough movement after cleaning, professional inspection is safer than repeatedly exercising the joint.

Choosing a lubricant or maintenance kit

The essential choice is a lubricant, not a particular brand. Look for a PTFE/Teflon-based product intended for pivoting or wear areas and compatible with the tool’s materials. A low-viscosity oil may help displace moisture, especially after water exposure, but it should be applied sparingly and wiped down afterward. No comparative performance data between lubricant brands establishes that one brand is superior here.

Option When it fits What to check
PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant Routine pivot and wear-area lubrication after cleaning and drying Material compatibility, application instructions, and a precision way to dispense a small amount
Low-viscosity oil Helping displace moisture from a joint, including after water exposure Use sparingly; keep it off cutting edges and locking surfaces and remove excess
Leatherman Tool Maintenance Kit (SKU 833031) A bundled set when you also need cleaning supplies The listed contents include lubrication oil, a pick, swabs, a brush, and a microfiber cloth; the official listing showed the kit as backordered when checked, so verify availability

The maintenance kit is a convenience, not a requirement for freeing a joint. A suitable PTFE-based lubricant and basic cleaning materials are enough for the routine procedure described here.

What not to do

  • Do not force a jammed implement. High leverage can bend the part or turn a minor obstruction into a damaged pivot.
  • Do not use acetone or brake cleaner on plastic-containing tools. Leatherman warns these solvents may damage plastic.
  • Do not soak the tool unnecessarily. Trapped water can remain in liners and pivots.
  • Do not over-oil. A heavy film collects abrasive dirt and can migrate to surfaces that need secure friction.
  • Do not sharpen, grind, sand, or drill around a stuck pivot. These actions can remove material and alter alignment.
  • Do not copy a teardown from a different model. The cited manufacturer guidance does not provide a model-independent dismantling sequence.
  • Do not carry a tool with an unreliable lock. Keep it out of use until the locking behavior is normal or the tool has been serviced.

When to stop home maintenance and request service

Contact Leatherman when the joint remains immovable after the conservative cleaning-and-lubrication procedure, when a component is bent or cracked, when corrosion is deep or spreading, or when the pivot has excessive looseness. Include the exact model if known and describe what happened, such as saltwater exposure, impact, adhesive contamination, or a sudden change in movement. Photographs of the pivot and implement can help explain the condition, but follow the current submission instructions rather than shipping the tool informally.

Warranty and repair limits

Leatherman’s current US warranty page describes a 25-year limited warranty for the original or primary owner. It says material or manufacturing defects may be repaired or replaced, subject to the policy, and that each tool needs its own submission. The page gives an estimated processing time of 10 to 15 business days; verify the current timing and instructions before sending anything.

The same US policy excludes abuse, alteration, rust, oxidation, corrosion, and routine maintenance or sharpening. A stiff joint caused by dirt or a need for lubrication is therefore maintenance, not automatically a warranty defect. Customers outside the United States should use the country-specific process rather than assuming the US terms apply.

Preventing the joint from becoming stiff again

  1. After using the tool around water, rinse away salt or contaminants with fresh water when appropriate.
  2. Dry the tool fully before closing it or putting it in storage.
  3. Wipe off sap, food, adhesive, and other sticky substances before they harden.
  4. Inspect pivots and implement gaps periodically for lint, grit, or discoloration.
  5. Apply a small amount of PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant to pivoting or wear areas when movement begins to feel dry, then wipe away excess.
  6. Store the tool in a dry place rather than a damp sheath or enclosed compartment.
  7. Have a loose, damaged, corroded, or unreliable joint evaluated instead of compensating with more force or lubricant.

These habits address contamination and moisture without changing the tool’s factory geometry. They also make it easier to notice a genuine mechanical problem before it becomes a safety issue.
