Separate the problem before changing settings: a game that will not start needs a launch-failure checklist, while a controller that appears in Steam but fails in the game needs an input-compatibility check. Restart the computer and Steam, update the operating system and relevant drivers, verify the game files, and compare the game’s requirements with your hardware. For controller problems, first check whether Steam sees the device in Settings > Controller > Details; then test the connection mode, Steam Overlay, supported input configuration, and conflicting software. The exact game, operating system, controller model, connection type, and error message determine which branch applies.
First, identify which failure you have
Do not treat every Steam problem as a broken installation. Use the symptom that occurs first:

Write down the operating system (Windows, Linux, or macOS), the game’s exact store or error wording, whether it is a Steam title or an external launcher, the controller model, and whether it is wired, Bluetooth, or connected through a receiver. Those details prevent you from applying advice for one device or platform to another.
Fix a Steam game that will not launch
1. Restart the computer and Steam
Restart the computer before changing files or drivers. If the game still fails, exit Steam completely and start it again, then retry the title. Steam’s support guidance describes restarting as a way to rule out transient device and process problems. A restart also clears a game process that may still be running invisibly, releases a locked file, and reloads driver services.

2. Update the operating system and relevant drivers
Install pending operating-system updates and current graphics or other relevant hardware drivers, then restart again. The platform emphasis differs:
- Windows: apply Windows updates and update the graphics and device drivers used by the game.
- Linux: update the distribution and graphics drivers. Confirm that the title has native Linux support before assuming a launch failure is a damaged installation.
- macOS: install available macOS updates and confirm that the game supports Mac.
Do not assume a driver update alone will make an unsupported game run. The game’s store page is the authoritative place to check its stated operating-system support and system requirements.
3. Compare your computer with the game’s requirements
Open the game’s Steam store page and compare your processor, memory, graphics hardware, storage, and operating system with the listed minimum and recommended requirements. Steam notes that a computer at or only slightly above the minimum can still experience launch or performance problems. Also check whether the game is offered for your operating system at all; a Windows-only title will not become a native macOS or Linux game because it is in your library.
4. Verify the installed files
A failed update, interrupted download, or corrupted file can prevent startup. Use Steam’s built-in check:
- Open Steam > Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then launch the game again.
The check may take several minutes. Steam can report that one or more local configuration files failed verification; its guidance says this is normal for files that are expected to be generated or changed locally. Do not repeatedly delete configuration files simply because that message appears.

5. Close non-essential software, but do not disable security indiscriminately
Temporarily close non-essential background applications and test the game again. Overlay tools, capture software, input remappers, performance monitors, and other utilities can interfere with a game or with Steam’s own hooks. Remove one suspected conflict at a time so you know which change mattered.
Do not turn off antivirus or other security protection wholesale. If an executable is missing, inspect the security product’s detection and quarantine history instead. Restore or allow a file only when you have confirmed that it belongs to the game and is legitimate. Then verify the files in Steam so a clean copy can be downloaded if needed.
6. Handle “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
This exact error generally means Steam cannot find the game executable it expects. Antivirus quarantine is one possible cause; an incomplete or corrupted installation is another.
- Restart the computer and Steam.
- Check antivirus detections and quarantine for the game executable.
- If the file is confirmed safe and was quarantined, restore or allow only that file according to the security product’s controls.
- Return to Library > game > Properties > Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Try launching again.
If the message remains, Steam’s support route for this specific error asks for a ticket containing an uncropped screenshot of the error, a System Report, and a list of conflicting programs you already removed. Include the game name, operating system, and the time the failure began so support can distinguish a missing file from a compatibility or security issue.
7. Linux and Steam Play (Proton)
When a Linux system runs a game without native Linux support through Steam Play/Proton, compatibility is title-specific. Verify the files and update Linux and graphics drivers first, but do not present Proton as a guaranteed fix. Check the game’s Steam Play discussion for reports about that title and use the Proton bug database when you need to report a reproducible compatibility problem. A setting that works for one game may fail for another.

8. Escalate when the checklist does not resolve launch failure
Steam’s general launch guidance says that configurations vary widely. If restart, updates, requirements checks, verification, and interference checks do not help, contact the game’s developer for case-specific diagnosis. Provide the exact error, operating system and version, hardware details, steps already completed, and any relevant logs or screenshots requested by the developer. For the missing-executable message, use the Steam Support ticket path described above.

Fix a controller that Steam or the game does not recognize
1. Find the point where detection stops
Open Steam’s controller area and determine whether the device is absent there or merely fails after the game starts. In the current 2026 Steam Controller guide, connection details are available at Settings > Controller > Details. A controller missing from that screen has a connection, power, firmware, or operating-system problem; a controller listed there but ignored in-game usually has an overlay, mapping, supported-input, or software-conflict problem.
2. Restart devices and install updates
Steam Support states: “Restart the devices you’re having trouble with to see whether this resolves the issue you’re experiencing.” Restart the computer, controller, and any receiver or Bluetooth hardware involved. Install available Steam updates, operating-system updates, and controller firmware updates before testing again.
Connection options depend on the controller. The current Steam Controller guide covers three modes for that controller: its included Puck receiver, Bluetooth, and wired USB-C. Do not apply those modes to a different controller unless its documentation confirms the same support.
3. Check the receiver or Bluetooth path
For the Steam Controller’s Puck receiver, inspect signal strength and line of sight. Move potential sources of wireless interference and remove obstructions between the controller and receiver. A short distance, a clear path, and a receiver placed away from noisy wireless or USB equipment can help distinguish radio interference from a software mapping problem.

For Bluetooth, remove stale pairings if the operating system shows a duplicate or disconnected entry, then pair the controller again using the controller’s documented procedure. Test only after Steam has fully restarted, because a pairing that exists in the operating system is not proof that Steam has initialized the device correctly.
4. Test wired USB-C only when the controller supports it
If the controller supports wired USB-C, connect it with a known-good USB-C data cable and test again. Some cables provide power without carrying data, so a charging indicator alone does not establish a usable connection. This is a diagnostic step for a compatible controller, not a universal fix and not a remedy for a game that will not launch.
5. If Steam sees the controller but the game does not
Check whether Steam Overlay opens in the game. Overlay functionality is part of the path used by Steam Input for many configurations; if the overlay cannot appear, controller translation may not reach the title.
Next, inspect the selected input configuration and the input style the game supports. A title may expect a particular controller protocol, while a configuration presents another type. Choose a configuration compatible with that game instead of assuming that every layout works everywhere.

6. Disconnect other gamepads and input devices
As a diagnostic test, unplug or disconnect other controllers, steering devices, flight sticks, and similar input hardware, then relaunch the game. Some games prioritize one device, assign player one to a different device, or behave differently when multiple controllers are present. If the target controller works alone, reconnect devices one by one to identify the interaction.
7. Test a non-Steam game or separate launcher
Add the external game’s executable to your Steam library, then launch it through Steam and test the controller. Adding a shortcut can provide Steam’s input and overlay path, but it does not guarantee compatibility. Results vary with the game, its launcher, its anti-cheat system, and whether the title supports Steam Overlay.
Some anti-cheat solutions can reject the extra input layer. An independent launcher that requires administrator rights can also prevent Steam’s overlay or controller layer from attaching correctly. Games without Steam Overlay support may not accept Steam Input even when the shortcut is configured correctly. In those cases, use the game’s own controller support or launcher settings rather than repeatedly reinstalling Steam.

A fast decision sequence
Use this order when you want the fewest changes:
- Record the exact symptom and error text.
- Restart the computer, Steam, controller, and receiver or Bluetooth hardware involved.
- For launch failure, update the platform and drivers, check requirements, and verify files.
- For controller failure, inspect Settings > Controller > Details and test the supported connection mode.
- If Steam detects the controller, test Overlay, the game-supported input style, and a launch with other input devices disconnected.
- Close only suspected conflicting software and retest after each change.
- For “Missing Executable,” check antivirus quarantine before restoring a confirmed-safe file and verifying again.
- For Proton or non-Steam titles, treat compatibility as game-specific and check the title’s support information.
- Contact the developer when the general launch checklist fails; submit the Steam Support ticket and requested diagnostics for a persistent missing-executable error.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Using controller advice to solve a launch failure: A game that never opens must first pass the launch checklist; controller changes cannot repair a missing executable or unsupported operating system.
- Assuming every controller has the Steam Controller’s connection modes: Puck, Bluetooth, and USB-C guidance applies only where the model supports those modes.
- Ignoring the distinction between Steam detection and in-game input: A device listed in Steam points toward Overlay, mapping, supported input, or conflict troubleshooting, not basic pairing.
- Restoring every antivirus detection: Restore only a file confirmed to belong to the game and to be safe, then verify the installation.
- Blaming a bad cable without checking data support: A USB-C cable is useful only for a controller that supports wired USB-C, and it must carry data.
- Testing with several controllers attached: Disconnect extras first; device-priority behavior can make a working controller appear broken.
- Treating a non-Steam shortcut as a compatibility guarantee: Anti-cheat, administrator-only launchers, and missing Overlay support can still block Steam Input.
- Assuming Proton behaves the same for every title: Proton compatibility must be evaluated per game.
What to include when asking for support
Give the developer or Steam Support a reproducible description rather than “it does not work.” Include:
- Game name and whether it is a Steam, non-Steam, or separate-launcher title.
- Operating system and relevant version information.
- Controller model and connection type.
- The exact error wording, especially “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)” when applicable.
- Whether Steam lists the controller in Settings > Controller > Details.
- Whether Steam Overlay opens in the game.
- Whether file verification completed and whether antivirus reported a quarantine event.
- Which conflicting programs or extra input devices were removed during testing.
For a missing-executable ticket, Steam specifically asks for an uncropped error screenshot, a System Report, and the list of conflicting programs already removed. Supplying those items avoids a support reply that simply repeats the initial checklist.
