If a Steam game flashes “Preparing to launch,” briefly opens and closes, or returns to the Play button, start with the low-risk checks: note exactly what happens, restart Steam and your computer, then verify the game’s installed files. After that, choose a targeted fix based on whether the problem points to a download or library issue, the Steam client itself, or a game-specific display setting. These steps help narrow the cause; none is a guaranteed fix for every title.
First, identify what is failing
A game that will not start is not necessarily a Steam-client failure. Before changing settings, try launching it once and note the result. A few observations can tell you which troubleshooting branch is relevant:
- Does the Play button change to “Preparing to launch” and then return to “Play”?
- Does a game process appear briefly, even if no window opens?
- Does Steam remain open, or does the Steam client close too?
- Is there an error message or crash dialog? Save a screenshot if there is one.
Also record the game’s name, your Windows version or whether you use Steam Play, your hardware and GPU, and any recent game, driver, or mod changes. Steam Support asks users reporting client problems to provide a screenshot and details about the issue. Keeping this information now makes it easier to distinguish a game-specific failure from a problem with Steam.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThese details are not busywork: they help you decide which checks make sense. If Steam stays open while only the game disappears, that is different from the Steam client closing. A return to the Play button or a brief process may help describe the symptom, but it does not by itself prove that the files, graphics driver, or client is at fault. Likewise, “Preparing to launch” is a useful description to include in a support request, not a diagnosis.

Write down what happened in order: what you clicked, whether the status text changed, whether a process or game window appeared, and whether any message was shown. If an error appears, capture the full message rather than paraphrasing it. Note when the issue began and whether it followed a game update, driver change, or mod change. Those observations give the game’s support team or Steam Support a concrete starting point.
Restart Steam and verify the game files
Begin with the simplest supported checks. Steam lists restarting as a useful first step for installation and update issues; it is a sensible low-risk check for a launch problem, although it does not identify or resolve every kind of crash.
- Exit and reopen Steam. Try launching the affected game again. If the problem remains, restart the computer and test once more.
- Verify the installed files. In Steam, open Library, right-click the affected game, and select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of Game Files.
- Wait for verification to finish, then try launching the game. Steam says verification checks installed files and can fix them if necessary.
File verification is the most directly relevant check when the game’s installation may be damaged or incomplete. It is not the same as reinstalling Steam, and it does not establish whether a crash is caused by a driver, another program, a mod, or a game-specific defect.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

If Steam reports that it corrected or reacquired files, test the game once after that work is finished. If the same failure persists, record that result and continue to the matching branch below rather than repeatedly running the same check without a new reason. Verification answers a narrow question—whether Steam can check the installed game files and fix them if necessary. It cannot establish that every part of the PC or every game-specific component is working.
Steam’s wording is that it “can verify the correctness over installed game files and fix them if necessary.” That makes verification a sensible early step, not a promise that every launch failure will be repaired. If verification completes but the game still returns to Play, that is useful information for the next step and for a support request.
Choose the next step by symptom
Do not run every client repair option by default. Steam’s download-cache and library-repair tools address particular download or library conditions; they are not universal crash fixes.
| What you observe | Targeted check | What Steam says it does |
|---|---|---|
| The problem appears tied to a download, update, or cached-download state. | Settings > Downloads > Clear Cache | Flushes locally cached configuration data so the client can reacquire it from Steam servers. |
| Steam reports a library write or permission problem. | Settings > Storage, open the menu for the affected library, then choose Repair Folder. | Refreshes permissions for the library folder. |
| Steam itself closes or crashes when you try to launch the game. | Check for conflicting programs and follow Steam’s client troubleshooting guidance for programs that may interfere. | Steam identifies other programs as a possible source of client conflicts; this is a separate problem from a game process closing while Steam stays open. |
| A Valve or Source game fails in connection with video or display settings. | Use Steam’s video/display troubleshooting guidance for that game and check its directions before changing launch settings. | The listed display options apply to Valve/Source games and do not affect other Steam games. |
For the first two cases, the paths above are targeted repair actions. If the symptom does not fit a download/cache or library-permission problem, there is no basis here to treat either option as a general startup-crash cure. Steam’s Update & Installation Issues guidance describes clearing the download cache as flushing local cached configuration data and reacquiring it, and library repair as refreshing library-folder permissions.

When clearing the download cache fits
Choose Settings > Downloads > Clear Cache when the problem appears connected to a download, update, or cached-download state. Steam says this clears locally cached configuration data and reacquires it from Steam’s servers. This is a targeted client check: it is relevant when the client’s local download state is implicated, not a general way to repair any game that closes during startup.
Do not infer from the word “cache” that it will fix unrelated game files, display settings, or a conflict with another program. If the game launches and then crashes with no download or update symptom, first rely on the file check and the observed behavior. If you do clear the cache, test again and note whether anything changed; that result can help you decide whether to contact Steam Support or the game’s support team.
When library repair fits
Use Settings > Storage, open the menu for the affected library, and select Repair Folder when Steam reports a library write or permission issue. Steam describes repair as refreshing library-folder permissions. That is a narrower purpose than repairing a game’s code or undoing a crash caused by display configuration.
If there is no permission or write warning and the problem is simply that a game does not open, do not assume library repair is the next universal step. Match the action to the reported condition. If you do run it because the symptom fits, retry once and keep the result with your notes.
When Steam itself crashes
If the client closes or crashes along with the launch attempt, consider software that may conflict with Steam and consult Steam’s General Steam Client Troubleshooting and Programs Which May Interfere guidance. Steam identifies other programs as a possible cause of client conflicts. This branch is for a failing Steam client; it is not automatically relevant when Steam remains open and only the game process disappears.
Preserve a screenshot of any error and note what was open or what changed recently, but do not guess at a specific conflicting program from the fact of a crash alone. Steam’s support flow asks for a screenshot and a description. Use those observations to explain the client failure rather than treating every problem that occurs after pressing Play as the same issue.
If Steam stays open but the game does not
Do not copy display launch options from another game
Steam’s documented video and display launch settings are specifically for Valve/Source games. Steam says they have no effect on other Steam games, so a flag found in a guide for one title is not a reliable fix for another. If the affected game is a Valve/Source title and the failure appears tied to video or display configuration, consult the game-specific Steam guidance rather than applying unrelated options blindly.

The scope matters. A launch option is not a generic startup repair simply because it can be entered in Steam. Steam’s launch-options guidance describes client-level options, including -clearbeta, but that does not make such an option a universal way to fix a game crash. For video/display settings in particular, use only directions that explicitly apply to the title and situation. The documented display options are for Valve/Source games; Steam says they have no effect on other Steam games.

If you are unsure whether your game is a Valve/Source title or whether a suggested setting applies, do not copy it from a different game’s instructions. Use the game’s official support information or Steam’s relevant guidance. Keep track of any setting you change so you can tell support what you tried and avoid confusing a new configuration change with the original symptom.
Separate the game failure from a client failure
If Steam remains open and only the game process disappears, the general client-crash path is not automatically the right diagnosis. Use the file-verification and symptom-matched checks above, then consult the game’s official support channel for title-specific errors. If Steam itself exits, use Steam’s client troubleshooting guidance for potentially interfering programs instead.
This distinction also affects where to ask for help. A game-specific error or a repeatable crash in one title is best described to that game’s official support channel, with the title and exact error. A Steam client that closes or a Steam-managed installation that appears to fail points more directly to Steam Support. Neither route can be chosen confidently from the phrase “won’t launch” alone, so include what actually happens on your system.
For “Preparing to launch” on Windows or Steam Play
Steam has a support page for games that remain at “Preparing to launch.” Its Windows guidance points users to Microsoft’s current update instructions; its Steam Play guidance points to Valve’s Proton issue database. Follow the current instructions on the relevant support page for your platform rather than relying on old Windows-update examples or assuming a Windows remedy applies to Steam Play.
The platform-specific direction is important: the Windows route and the Steam Play route are not interchangeable. The Steam Play page points to Proton issue information, while the Windows route directs users to Microsoft’s current update guidance. Check the current support page before following platform steps, since Microsoft’s general crash guidance has included legacy examples and now redirects to Xbox Support. Do not use an old example as proof that a particular update is required for your system.
If the game stops at “Preparing to launch,” record that exact status and whether it later returns to Play, opens briefly, or produces an error. Include that sequence with your operating system or Steam Play details when contacting support. The symptom page is a useful path to the appropriate platform resource; it does not supply a one-size-fits-all fix for every game that stalls there.

When to contact support—and what to include
If the general checks do not solve the issue, use the game’s official support channel for a title-specific startup failure. Contact Steam Support when the Steam client itself or a Steam-managed installation appears to be the problem. Include the observations you recorded, the screenshot of any error, and the relevant details below:
- Game title and operating system version, or whether you are using Steam Play.
- Hardware and GPU information.
- The exact error text, or a description of what happens after pressing Play.
- When the problem began and any recent game, driver, or mod changes.
- Whether Steam stays open when the game fails.
This information helps support teams assess the specific failure instead of treating every “won’t launch” report as the same issue. Steam’s client support flow specifically requests an error screenshot and details when users seek help.
Make the report easy to follow. State the game and platform first, then describe the sequence after clicking Play. Say whether Steam remains open, whether a process appeared briefly, and whether the status returned to Play or stayed at “Preparing to launch.” Attach a screenshot when there is an error dialog. If there is no message, say so rather than guessing at an error.
Then list what you have already tried and the result: restarted Steam or the computer, verified the game files, cleared the download cache because of a download/update symptom, repaired a library because Steam reported a permissions issue, or followed the appropriate platform-specific support route. Mention any recent driver or mod changes and when the problem began. This helps avoid repeating irrelevant steps and gives the support team the context to assess the specific failure.
Do not expect the general symptoms alone to reveal a title-specific cause. Without the game name, operating system, GPU, exact error, recent changes, and whether Steam itself remains open, there is not enough information to establish why a particular game fails. A precise report is more useful than a broad claim that “Steam is broken.”

Do not jump straight to uninstalling Steam as a generic startup fix. Steam’s installation/update help warns that uninstalling Steam deletes game content. The supported checks above let you test installed files and relevant client or library conditions without making that broader change first. Likewise, do not add Valve-specific display flags to an unrelated game or assume a download-cache reset will repair a crash with no download or cache symptom.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the order conservative: observe the failure, restart, verify the affected game, and then select a targeted client or platform check only if the symptom matches it. The checks differ in what they address. Verification checks installed game files; clearing the download cache flushes local cached configuration data and reacquires it; library repair refreshes library permissions; client troubleshooting addresses possible program conflicts; display guidance applies to Valve/Source titles. Choosing by symptom is more informative and avoids making unrelated changes that muddy the diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Steam game go from “Preparing to launch” back to Play?
That behavior describes the symptom but does not identify a single cause. Note whether a game process appears, whether Steam stays open, and whether an error appears. Restart Steam and the computer, verify the game files, then use a targeted check only if you also have a download, library-permission, client-crash, or game-specific display symptom.
Will verifying the integrity of game files fix a Steam game that crashes on startup?
It can check the installed game files and fix them if necessary, so it is a useful early step when the installation may be incomplete or damaged. It is not a guaranteed fix for crashes caused by drivers, other programs, mods, or game-specific defects.

Use Clear Cache when the problem appears connected to a download, update, or cached-download state. Steam says the action flushes locally cached configuration data and reacquires it from Steam servers; it is not a universal startup-crash fix.
What does Repair Folder do in Steam?
The library repair option refreshes permissions for the library folder. Use it when Steam reports a library write or permission problem, rather than treating it as a general repair for any game crash.
Do Steam launch options work for every game?
No. Steam’s documented video and display launch options apply to Valve/Source games and have no effect on other Steam games. Do not copy a setting from a different title without checking that it applies.
What should I send to Steam Support or the game developer?
Include the game title, operating system or Steam Play status, hardware and GPU, exact error or launch sequence, when the issue began, recent game/driver/mod changes, and whether Steam remains open. Save and attach a screenshot if an error appears. Use the game’s official support channel for title-specific failures and Steam Support when the client or Steam-managed installation appears to be failing.
