Restart Steam and your computer first. If the demo will not download or install, clear Steam’s download cache and repair the library folder. If it installs but will not launch, verify its files, confirm operating-system support and hardware requirements, then check for blocked files or a stuck process. The exact error, demo, operating system and displayed message determine which branch to follow.
Start by identifying the failure
“Won’t launch” can describe several different failures. A demo may never begin downloading, repeatedly reset its download, fail during installation, remain at Preparing to Launch, report a missing executable, appear to run without opening a window, or be unavailable for the current platform. Each symptom points to a different first check.

Write down the demo’s exact name, your operating system and the complete error text before changing anything. An uncropped screenshot can preserve details that are easy to omit when describing the problem.

Do the safe reset first
- Exit Steam completely. Use Steam’s exit command rather than merely closing a window, then start it again.
- Restart the computer. Steam’s installation and launch guidance treats a fresh restart as a basic first step because it clears temporary client state and processes left behind by a failed attempt.
- Try the demo once more and note the result. If the same message returns, follow the symptom-specific section below instead of repeating the restart indefinitely.
When a demo will not download or install
Clear Steam’s download cache
A damaged or stale download cache can prevent a demo from starting, finishing or updating. In the Steam client, open Settings, select Downloads, and choose Clear Download Cache. Steam says this does not remove installed games. It does sign you out, so sign in again when Steam restarts, then retry the download.

Use this step for a download that is stuck at zero, repeatedly begins again, or claims to be preparing an update without progress. It is not a substitute for repairing a library folder when the installation location itself is not writable.
Repair the library folder
Steam requires the library location to be writable. To repair it, open Settings, choose Storage, open the menu for the affected library folder, and select Repair Folder. Retry the demo after the repair completes.
If you use more than one drive or library, test another Steam library when possible. A successful installation in a different library points to a permissions, file-system or drive problem in the original location rather than to the demo’s launcher.

Try a different download region
Steam’s update and installation guidance also recommends changing the client’s download region when a download remains stalled. In Settings, open Downloads, select another nearby region, restart the download and watch whether it progresses. Region changes address the delivery path; they do not repair an unwritable library or a missing game file.
Look for software that interrupts Steam
Temporarily close non-essential applications that overlay, scan or modify games, then try again. Steam lists interfering software, outdated operating-system components and outdated drivers among possible causes of installation and launch failures. Do not uninstall security software as a first response; instead, check its event history or quarantine if Steam later reports a missing file.
When the demo installs but will not launch
Verify the installed files
For a demo that reaches your Library but fails to open, check whether its files are damaged or incomplete:
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the demo and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
The process can take several minutes. Steam may report one or more files that failed verification even when the installation is usable; its support guidance notes that local configuration files can account for such a message. Let Steam finish, then launch the demo again. If verification repeatedly replaces the same files, investigate security software, storage health and the library location instead of assuming that reinstalling will solve the cause.

Check the demo’s platform support and requirements
Open the demo’s Steam Store page and confirm that your operating system is listed. Steam’s message Game is not available on your current platform means the operating system is unsupported for that title. A Windows-only demo will not become supported simply because Steam can display its page on another system.
Compare your computer with every listed requirement, including the operating-system version, processor, memory, graphics hardware and available storage. A demo can install successfully and still fail at launch when a required graphics feature or minimum operating-system version is absent. Requirements are title-specific, so do not infer compatibility from another game by the same developer.
Windows, Linux and macOS have different launch paths
Steam’s general launch guidance covers Windows, Linux and macOS, but the applicable checks differ. On Linux, a Windows-only demo attempted through Proton may need separate Steam Play troubleshooting; native Linux support and Proton compatibility are not the same thing. On macOS, verify that the Store page lists macOS and that your system version is supported. On Windows, confirm that graphics and system updates are current and investigate processes or security software when the executable is blocked.
Fix specific error messages
“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
Steam says this message can mean that a game file is missing or blocked, with antivirus quarantine being a common cause. Open your security software’s quarantine or detection history and look for a file associated with the demo. Restore a file only after you have confirmed that it is the legitimate file from the demo’s installation; do not whitelist an unknown executable merely to make the error disappear.
After a verified file is restored, return to Library → demo → Properties → Installed Files and run Verify integrity of game files. If the security tool removes the file again, pause troubleshooting and resolve that detection with the security vendor or the game developer. Reinstalling repeatedly will not help if the same file is quarantined each time.
“Failed to start game (app already running)”
The demo may have left a process running even though no game window is visible. On Windows, open Task Manager, locate the demo’s process, end the stuck process and try again. If you cannot identify a safe process to end, restart the computer instead. Steam’s guidance also suggests testing the regular client if you are participating in the Steam beta: opt out temporarily, restart Steam and retest. A result that changes outside the beta is useful evidence for Steam Support.
“Preparing to Launch” never completes
Start with a restart, then verify the demo’s files. Confirm that the Store page supports your operating system and that your hardware meets the listed requirements. Close non-essential software, update the operating system and graphics drivers, and retry. If the process remains stuck, check whether a security product is blocking the executable or whether a previous process is still running.

The download or installation keeps resetting
Clear the download cache, repair the library folder and try another library or download region. A reset that occurs only on one drive suggests a library or storage problem. A reset that follows a security alert suggests that a file is being blocked. Record the exact point at which the reset occurs and include it in a support request.
Operating-system-specific checks
Windows
- Use Task Manager to end a demo process that remains after a failed launch.
- Check antivirus quarantine for a missing executable before reinstalling.
- Install pending Windows and graphics-driver updates, then restart.
- Close overlays and other non-essential software while testing.
Steam’s support pages describe these as general troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee for every Windows configuration. Keep the exact error and the demo title available if the problem persists.
Linux
- Confirm whether the Store page lists Linux support.
- If the demo is Windows-only and you are using Proton, treat compatibility as a separate Steam Play issue rather than a damaged installation.
- Verify files and check that the selected library is writable.
- Retest after system and graphics-stack updates, following the distribution’s normal update process.
A demo can be downloadable on Linux while still lacking a supported Linux build. The platform label on the title’s Store page is the authoritative first check for that demo.
macOS
- Confirm that macOS is listed as a supported operating system for the demo.
- Check the Mac’s system version and hardware against the Store page requirements.
- Restart Steam and the Mac, then verify the demo’s installed files.
- Close non-essential utilities and apply available system and graphics updates.
If the title is not offered for macOS, installation workarounds cannot create a supported Mac version. Use the developer’s support channel for any title-specific compatibility statement.
Use each test as a diagnostic clue
Do not treat every successful step as proof that the entire problem is fixed. A cache clear that allows downloading to begin again points to Steam’s local download state; it does not prove that the demo files are healthy. Likewise, a repaired library folder explains a write or permission problem in that location, but it does not establish that the title supports your operating system.
Compare results across locations and attempts. If the demo installs in a second library, concentrate on the original drive, its permissions and its file system. If changing the download region changes the result, the delivery route was involved, while a failure in every region points elsewhere. If verification completes but the launch still fails, move to requirements, security software and running-process checks rather than repeating verification without new evidence.
An isolated “failed to verify” notice is not automatically a reason to delete the demo. Steam notes that local configuration files can produce that message. Let the check complete, launch once, and judge the result by the actual error and behavior. Repeated replacement of the same file, especially alongside a quarantine alert, is more informative than a single verification warning.

Before you reinstall
A complete reinstall is not the universal next step. It can consume another download and leave the underlying cause untouched if the library is not writable, the platform is unsupported, or security software removes the same executable again. Before removing anything, capture the exact message, filename or path, and the result of verification.
Confirm that the Store page lists your operating system and that the computer meets the processor, memory, graphics and storage requirements. If you have another Steam library, use it as a controlled test. Keep any quarantine record and note whether temporarily closing non-essential software changes the behavior. These observations make a later support request more useful than simply reporting that a reinstall failed.
When standard fixes do not work
Do not jump straight to a complete reinstall without preserving the evidence. First record the demo name, operating system and version, the exact Steam message, whether the problem occurs during download, installation or launch, and which steps changed the behavior. Include an uncropped screenshot when the message contains a path, filename or code.
Use the demo’s Support link in the Steam Library to contact the developer when the general checks fail. Steam recommends game-specific support for persistent launch failures because the developer can identify title-specific launchers, patches, known compatibility limits or files that security software commonly blocks.
Explain whether you cleared the download cache, repaired the library folder, changed the download region, verified files, checked platform requirements and examined quarantine or stuck processes. This prevents support from sending the same generic steps and gives them a reproducible sequence.

- Classify the symptom. Separate download or installation failures from launch failures, then copy the exact message.
- Restart. Exit Steam and restart the computer before making deeper changes.
- For download or installation issues, clear Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache, repair the affected folder through Settings → Storage → library menu → Repair Folder, and test another library or download region.
- For launch issues, run Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files, then confirm platform support and hardware requirements.
- For a missing executable, inspect security quarantine and restore only a verified legitimate file before verifying again.
- For an already-running or invisible process, end the stuck process on Windows or restart; if you use Steam beta, retest with the normal client.
- Update and isolate. Apply operating-system and driver updates and close non-essential software while testing.
- Escalate with evidence. Send the developer the title, system, exact error, steps attempted and a useful screenshot.
This sequence keeps installation repairs separate from launch diagnosis and avoids treating an unsupported platform as a corrupted download.

Will clearing Steam’s download cache delete my installed demos?
Steam says clearing the cache does not remove installed games. It signs you out of Steam, so sign in again after the client restarts, then retry the download or update.

Why did file verification say that files failed to verify?
Steam notes that one or more failed-to-verify files can be normal when they are local configuration files. Let verification finish and test the demo; investigate further if the same files are repeatedly replaced or the demo still reports an error.
Should I reinstall after a missing executable error?
Not immediately. Check antivirus quarantine or detection history first, restore a file only when you have confirmed it is the legitimate demo file, and then verify the installation. Reinstalling will not help if security software removes the executable again.
What does “Game is not available on your current platform” mean?
Steam uses that message when the demo does not support your operating system. Check the Store page rather than assuming that a downloadable listing means the title has a native build for Windows, Linux or macOS.

How do I fix “app already running” when no window is open?

If none of these changes the result, send the developer the exact error, system details and steps already tested.
