First determine what disappeared: if the Decky menu itself is gone after a SteamOS update, reinstall Decky Loader from Desktop Mode. If Decky still opens but one plugin is missing or fails, repair that plugin from Decky’s settings instead. These are different problems with different fixes, and neither normally requires a factory reset or SteamOS reimage.

Identify whether Decky or one plugin is broken

Decky Loader is a community homebrew plugin launcher for Steam Deck. SteamOS updates can occasionally remove or disable the loader interface. The Decky Loader README describes this directly: “Sometimes Decky will disappear on SteamOS updates.” In that situation, no individual plugin can load because the launcher itself is unavailable.

A second situation is more limited: the “…” Quick Access menu still contains Decky, but one plugin is absent, stuck loading, showing an error, or no longer responding. In that case, reinstalling the entire loader is not the first step. Use Decky’s own plugin controls, then investigate that plugin’s maintainer and issue tracker if necessary.

What you see What it usually means Start here
Decky no longer appears in the “…” Quick Access menu The loader installation was removed or stopped working, often after SteamOS updated. Switch to Desktop Mode and rerun the official Decky Loader installer, choosing the latest stable release.
Decky opens, but one plugin is missing or will not start The loader is functioning; the individual plugin may need an update, reload, or removal. Open Decky settings, update or reload the plugin, and check its own support channel.
Several plugins fail after reinstalling or the failure keeps returning A system-level conflict, such as a port already in use, may be interfering with Decky. Check software using ports 8080 or 1337, especially Syncthing.

A quick way to classify the symptom

Press the “…” button once and wait for Quick Access to open. If the Decky entry is completely absent, follow the loader-recovery section below. If Decky appears but its panel is empty, first allow it to finish loading, then use the settings gear. If the panel opens and lists most plugins but one is marked with an error, leave the working plugins alone and troubleshoot only the affected entry.

Note what changed immediately before the failure. A SteamOS update points toward reinstalling the loader; a plugin update points toward that plugin’s release notes or issue tracker; and installing a background service points toward a possible port collision. This simple distinction prevents unnecessary resets and avoids deleting working configuration.

Restore Decky Loader after a SteamOS update

Use this sequence when the Decky icon or interface itself has disappeared. The official project recommends reinstalling before attempting destructive recovery steps.

  1. Save any work and switch to Desktop Mode. From Steam’s power menu, choose Desktop Mode. A keyboard and mouse can make this easier, but they are optional; Decky’s installation guidance says the right trackpad and the on-screen keyboard can also be used.
  2. Open the official Decky Loader GitHub project. Use the project’s current installer rather than an old copy downloaded before the SteamOS update. The installer and release-channel names can change, so follow the labels shown by the project at the time you reinstall.
  3. Choose the latest stable release first. The project calls its Latest Release channel stable and says it is intended for most users. Run that installer and allow it to complete. Do not erase plugin folders or reset the Deck as part of this step.
  4. Return to Game Mode and check Quick Access. After installation, return to Steam’s Game Mode, press the “…” button, and look for Decky. If the menu is back, open it and test one or two plugins before changing anything else.
  5. Use prerelease only if stable did not restore Decky. The README suggests trying Latest Pre-Release when reinstalling stable fails. This is a fallback, not the normal choice: prereleases are aimed at plugin developers and may be less stable. Install it only to diagnose or recover the loader, and switch back to stable when a stable release works for your setup.

If the stable installer completes but Decky is still absent, repeat the check in Game Mode and verify that you selected the current installer rather than an obsolete downloaded file. If the prerelease channel also fails, move to the port-conflict and escalation checks below instead of repeatedly reinstalling.

Verify the reinstall before changing plugins

Once Decky returns, open its main panel and confirm that the settings gear responds. Then test a known-working plugin. This separates a loader that is still failing from a single extension that needs maintenance. Do not immediately remove every plugin: broad cleanup makes it harder to identify which component caused the problem and can discard settings you still need.

If the loader comes back only after selecting prerelease, record that channel in your notes and in any issue report. The channel is part of the software version information maintainers need. Keep testing limited to the recovery you need, because prerelease builds can introduce their own regressions or compatibility problems.

Repair a plugin when Decky still opens

When the loader is present, use its built-in controls before reinstalling Decky. The official README directs users to the settings gear for plugin maintenance.

  1. Open Quick Access. Press the “…” button on the Steam Deck.
  2. Enter Decky. Select the Decky panel from the Quick Access sidebar.
  3. Open the settings gear. This is the control center for installed plugins and loader options.
  4. Check for a loader update if one is offered. A June 2026 troubleshooting guide describes checking for a Decky update from this area. Apply it, then accept any requested reload or Steam restart.
  5. Update the affected plugin. Install its available update, reload Decky if prompted, and test the plugin again.
  6. Reload the plugin without uninstalling it. A reload can resolve a plugin that is installed but did not initialize correctly after a restart.
  7. Uninstall only the affected plugin if it remains broken. Reopen Decky’s settings, remove that plugin, and restart or reload as requested. Reinstall it only from a source you trust and that is maintained by the plugin’s developer.

Change one thing at a time and test after each action. If updating fixes the problem, you have a useful record for the plugin’s maintainer. If updating does not help but reloading does, the failure may have been an initialization problem rather than a bad installation. If uninstalling restores Decky, report that result instead of assuming the loader itself is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uninstalling a plugin removes its plugin files, but the Decky README warns that it does not necessarily remove every file the plugin may have created elsewhere. Do not treat uninstall as a guarantee that all settings or generated data have been erased. If the plugin stores important configuration, look for its maintainer’s documented backup or cleanup procedure before removing it.

When only one plugin fails

Decky is a launcher, not a single codebase that controls every plugin. Each plugin is maintained by a different developer, so a loader reinstall cannot guarantee a fix for an individual extension. Record the plugin’s name and version, install its current release, and read its own source repository and issue tracker for compatibility notes. Avoid random download mirrors or untrusted plugin lists; a working Decky installation does not make every third-party plugin safe.

Check whether the plugin failure is reproducible. Open Decky after a full Steam restart, try the same action that triggered the error, and note whether other plugins continue to work. Do not describe an isolated crash as a Decky-wide outage. The plugin’s repository is the appropriate place to learn whether its developer has released a compatibility update or listed a known limitation.

When the plugin is missing from the list

A plugin that no longer appears may have been removed during an update, disabled after an error, or failed to register with Decky. First use the settings gear to reload and update the installed entries. If it is not listed at all, check the plugin’s maintainer documentation for its current installation method rather than deleting Decky’s entire configuration. If several entries vanished at once, treat the event as a loader problem and follow the Desktop Mode reinstall sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check for port conflicts

If reinstalling stable does not restore Decky, or the loader repeatedly disappears, check for another application occupying a port Decky needs. The official README identifies conflicts involving ports 8080 and 1337. It specifically calls out Syncthing when it is running as a service and recommends moving Syncthing away from port 8080; the README names 8384 as Syncthing’s recommended port.

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode and identify whether Syncthing or another background service is running.
  2. Open that application’s network or web-interface settings and check which port it uses.
  3. If it is using 8080 or 1337, change it to an unused port. For Syncthing, the Decky README recommends 8384.
  4. Restart the affected service, then restart or reload Decky and test Quick Access again.

The project’s warning is specific: “If you are using any software that uses port 1337 or 8080, please change its port to something else or uninstall it.” A port conflict can prevent the loader from starting, but it does not explain every individual plugin error. If Decky opens normally and only one extension fails, return to that plugin’s update and maintainer-support path.

Do not change ports blindly. Write down the original value, make one change, and test Decky before altering another service. If changing the port fixes the loader, include the application name and old and new ports in your issue report. If it changes nothing, restore the service only if its own documentation requires the original setting and continue with the other checks.

Choose the right recovery channel: stable or prerelease

Channel Project guidance Best use Trade-off
Latest Release Stable and intended for most users Normal installation and first recovery attempt after SteamOS updates May not contain a fix that has only reached development builds
Latest Pre-Release Intended for plugin developers; may not be fully stable Fallback when reinstalling the latest stable release does not recover Decky Greater risk of regressions or plugin incompatibility

Do not choose prerelease simply because it is newer. The project’s own order is stable first, prerelease second when stable fails. If you use prerelease to recover a missing loader, expect to troubleshoot more carefully and move back to stable when possible. When asking for help, state the channel explicitly; “Decky is broken” is less actionable than “Latest Release on SteamOS Stable” or “Latest Pre-Release after stable reinstall failed.”

What this repair costs

The documented software recovery requires no purchase. Decky Loader, its installer, and the described update, reload, and port checks are software steps. A USB-C keyboard or keyboard-and-mouse set can make Desktop Mode typing easier, but it is optional. The built-in right trackpad and on-screen keyboard provide alternatives, so buying hardware should not be presented as a prerequisite.

What not to do

  • Do not factory-reset the Deck for this symptom. The Decky project’s documented recovery path is to rerun its installer; it does not recommend a factory reset for a missing loader.
  • Do not reimage SteamOS as a first response. Reimaging is destructive and is not the project’s prescribed fix for Decky disappearing after an update.
  • Do not erase all plugin data just because one plugin fails. Start with update, reload, or targeted uninstall from Decky settings.
  • Do not assume a single Decky fix repairs every plugin. Plugin code and maintenance are independent.
  • Do not install a random replacement build. Use the official Decky project for the loader and the individual developer’s current source for a plugin.
  • Do not treat one old report as proof of a universal cause. A September 2024 report involving SteamOS 3.5.7 Stable is an example of useful version detail, not evidence that every current failure has the same cause.

Escalate with useful technical details

If stable reinstall, the prerelease fallback, plugin maintenance, and port checks do not resolve the problem, look for a matching report in the Decky Loader issue tracker. If none exists, file a report as the project README requests. A precise report is more useful than “Decky disappeared.” Include:

  • SteamOS version and whether the Deck is on Stable, Beta, or another channel.
  • Decky version and release channel: Latest Release or Latest Pre-Release.
  • The affected plugin’s exact name and version, if the loader itself still opens.
  • What changed immediately before the failure, such as a SteamOS update, Decky update, plugin update, or new background service.
  • The exact error text, including capitalization and punctuation.
  • Whether Decky is absent entirely, visible but empty, or limited to one failing plugin.
  • Whether a reload, Steam restart, plugin uninstall, or port change altered the behavior.
  • Logs requested by the relevant issue template, when available.

Version and channel information matters because behavior can differ between SteamOS releases and Decky builds. A September 2024 issue report described startup failures on SteamOS 3.5.7 Stable, but that single user report does not establish how common the problem is or prove that it explains a current failure. Use it as an example of the detail maintainers need, not as a universal diagnosis.

For a plugin-specific bug

Contact the plugin’s own maintainer and use that plugin’s issue tracker. Decky’s README states that each plugin has a different developer. Include the same version, error, and reproduction details, plus whether the loader itself works and whether removing the plugin restores normal Decky behavior. A general Steam Support page can provide broader Steam troubleshooting resources, but it does not replace the Decky or plugin issue tracker for an extension-specific defect.

Desktop Mode equipment is optional

A USB-C keyboard, or a keyboard and mouse, can make typing and navigating the installer easier in Desktop Mode. It is not a requirement for the documented recovery. The right trackpad and Steam Deck on-screen keyboard are alternatives, so do not delay the repair while waiting for extra hardware.

Prevent a repeat failure

  • After a SteamOS update, check whether Decky is present before assuming every plugin is broken.
  • Keep the loader on Latest Release unless you have a specific reason to test prerelease.
  • Update individual plugins from Decky’s settings rather than replacing the whole loader for every extension error.
  • Keep a note of your SteamOS, Decky, and plugin versions so a future issue report can identify the change that caused the failure.
  • Review background services after installing or enabling one that exposes a local web interface, especially if it uses port 8080 or 1337.
  • Use the current Decky project instructions because installer names and compatibility guidance can change over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Decky disappear after a SteamOS update?

The Decky Loader README says that Decky can disappear on SteamOS updates. Switch to Desktop Mode and rerun the official installer, choosing Latest Release first. If stable recovery fails, the project suggests Latest Pre-Release as a fallback, with a warning that it may be unstable.

Do I need to factory-reset or reimage my Steam Deck?

No. The documented first response is to rerun the Decky Loader installer. Factory resets and SteamOS reimages are destructive and are not recommended for this symptom.

What should I do if Decky opens but one plugin will not load?

Open Quick Access, enter Decky, and use the settings gear to check for updates, update the affected plugin, and reload it. If it remains broken, uninstall only that plugin and consult its developer’s current source and issue tracker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will uninstalling a plugin delete all of its data?

Not necessarily. The Decky README says uninstalling removes plugin files but may leave other files the plugin created elsewhere. Check the plugin maintainer’s backup or cleanup instructions before removing it.

Should I install the prerelease build immediately?

No. Latest Release is the normal choice for most users. Try Latest Pre-Release only after reinstalling stable fails; it is intended primarily for plugin developers and may be less stable.

Can Syncthing stop Decky from loading?

It can contribute to a port conflict when running as a service. Decky’s README identifies ports 8080 and 1337 as conflicts and recommends moving Syncthing off 8080, using 8384 as its recommended port.

Do I need a keyboard and mouse to reinstall Decky?

No. They can make Desktop Mode easier, but Decky’s instructions say the right trackpad and on-screen keyboard can be used instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where should I report a plugin-specific failure?

Use the affected plugin’s own maintainer and issue tracker because each plugin is maintained separately. Include SteamOS, Decky and plugin versions, the exact error, what changed, and whether removing the plugin restores Decky.

The Bottom Line

If the Decky interface vanished, reinstall the current Latest Release from Desktop Mode; try Latest Pre-Release only when stable recovery fails. If Decky still opens, update, reload, or uninstall only the failing plugin from the settings gear. When failures persist, check ports 8080 and 1337—especially Syncthing—and report precise version, channel, error, and log details to the appropriate tracker. No factory reset, reimage, or paid hardware is required for the documented recovery.
