Start by finding out whether the failure follows the internet connection, the device, the streaming app, or one game. While the stream is playing, test another app on the same device and, if possible, the same service on a second supported device. Then check speed against that service’s own guidance, switch from Wi‑Fi to Ethernet or improve Wi‑Fi placement, pause competing traffic, lower playback quality, restart the app, device and router, and check for a service outage. If only one event or service remains broken, report the event, time, device, location, speed result and error details to its support team.
First, identify what is actually failing
Buffering and sudden drops from HD to a blurry picture can have several causes. A congested Wi‑Fi link, a slow or unstable internet connection, an overloaded device, an outdated app, or a problem at the streaming service can produce similar symptoms. Do not replace equipment or change plans until you know which pattern you have.
Use a two-device, two-app check
- Leave the game open and note whether the picture pauses, turns blurry, switches to audio-only, or displays an error.
- On the same device and connection, play a different streaming app or a non-live video for several minutes.
- If available, open the same sports service on another supported device or browser.
- Write down whether the problem affects one event, every program in one app, or several services.
If several apps fail on several devices using the same connection, investigate your network or internet provider. If other apps work but one service or one event fails, an app, account, event feed or service outage is more likely. If only one device fails, concentrate on that device or its app. This test narrows the possibilities; it does not by itself prove the cause.

Run a download-speed test on the device that is buffering, preferably while nobody is performing a large download. A speed test is a useful clue, not a universal pass/fail standard. Each platform sets its own guidance, and the published figures below come from different services and regions.
#1 Best Overall
- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable

| Service and scope | Published guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| NFL+ video streaming | 5 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps or higher recommended for HD | NFL+ says speeds below 5 Mbps may cause buffering or audio-only playback. This is guidance for NFL+ video, not every sports service. |
| TVNZ+ (New Zealand service) | At least 15 Mbps for a good streaming experience | A service recommendation for TVNZ+, not a guaranteed requirement for other platforms. |
| beIN SPORTS CONNECT Singapore | At least 10 Mbps for best HD quality | Applies to the Singapore edition of that service and its HD guidance. |
These numbers are not the result of a controlled comparison and do not establish one minimum speed for all live sports. A high result can still coexist with trouble caused by Wi‑Fi interference, distance from the router, too many connected devices, packet loss, an ISP fault or a service-side incident. Test under the same conditions in which you watch: same room, same device and, if practical, while the game is playing.
What to do with the result
- Below the service’s guidance: pause large downloads and cloud backups, close other video streams, disconnect idle devices that are using bandwidth, and try a lower quality setting. If the speed remains low, ask your internet provider whether there is an outage or line problem.
- Near or above the guidance but still buffering: test Wi‑Fi placement, try Ethernet, restart networking equipment and look for instability rather than focusing only on the headline speed.
- Different results at different times: record the time and result. Evening congestion or an intermittent connection can explain why a game fails while an earlier test looked normal.
Stabilize Wi‑Fi before buying anything
Wireless conditions often change from room to room. ESPN’s troubleshooting guidance identifies distance from the router, the number of connected devices and ISP or network problems as factors that can affect streaming quality.
Move the viewing setup closer
For a quick test, move the device nearer to the router with as few walls and large appliances between them as possible. If playback improves immediately, coverage or interference is implicated. Keep the router in an open, elevated location rather than inside a cabinet. These changes are diagnostic as well as practical: they tell you whether the wireless link is the bottleneck.

Try Ethernet
If both the router and the television, console, laptop or streaming device have Ethernet ports, connect them with a compatible Ethernet cable and retry the same event. TVNZ+ and beIN SPORTS CONNECT list a wired connection as an option when Wi‑Fi is unreliable. Ethernet removes the local wireless hop; it cannot repair an outage at the service or ISP, and it is not a guaranteed cure.

Compare another network
When safe and practical, test the device on a different connection, such as a phone hotspot with sufficient data. A clear improvement points toward the original home network or ISP. A failure that follows the service across networks points more strongly to the app, account, event feed or service. Mobile data can have its own congestion and limits, so use this only as a comparison, not as a permanent recommendation.
Reduce demand and control the stream’s quality
Live players commonly use adaptive bandwidth. The NBA describes its player as periodically checking the internet connection and selecting an optimal quality; as available bandwidth changes, the picture can move between quality levels. Other traffic on the same connection can therefore trigger a visible drop even when the line’s maximum speed has not changed.
Pause competing traffic
- Stop large downloads, game updates and cloud synchronisation.
- Pause other live streams and high-resolution video calls.
- Close apps that continue playing video in the background.
- Ask other household users to pause bandwidth-heavy activity for the duration of the game.
Retry the stream after each major change so you know which action helped. If the service offers a manual quality selector, choose a lower resolution for the live event and watch for several minutes. A steady 720p or standard-definition picture is preferable to repeated pauses at an unstable automatic or HD setting. Restore higher quality only after the connection remains stable.
Refresh the app, browser and viewing device
A single app can have stale data or a temporary playback failure even when other services work normally.

- Fully close the player. Exit the app rather than leaving it suspended, or close the browser tab and open a new one.
- Reopen the event. Sign in again if the service requires it and select the live feed from the service’s current event page.
- Restart the device. Power-cycle the television, streaming stick, console, phone or computer, then retry.
- Install pending updates. Update the streaming app and the device’s operating system or browser. Support pages from NBA and ESPN include updating among their troubleshooting steps.
- Clear temporary data when appropriate. Clear the browser cache and cookies, or use the platform’s app-storage option to clear cache. Menu names vary by operating system; clearing storage may sign you out or remove downloads, so note your login first.
- Reinstall only if needed. Remove and reinstall the app using the platform’s normal store or settings procedure if corrupted local data is suspected.
Do not jump straight to a factory reset of a television, streaming box or router. That erases settings and accounts without establishing that local configuration is the cause.
Restart the modem and router safely
Restarting networking equipment can clear a temporary fault, renew a connection and remove a stuck session. It is different from resetting the router to factory defaults.
- Stop playback and identify the modem, router or combined gateway.
- Use the manufacturer’s normal power procedure or unplug the equipment.
- Leave it disconnected for the interval specified by the service or manufacturer. NBA support gives 1–2 minutes as an example; beIN SPORTS CONNECT gives a shorter unplug interval in its procedure. These are service-specific examples, not a universal requirement.
- Reconnect power, wait until the normal internet indicators return, then restart the streaming device and test the event again.
If restarting helps only briefly, record when the failure returns. Repeated drops across all devices warrant an ISP investigation rather than repeated reboots.
Check whether the event or service is having an incident
When other apps play normally, inspect the affected service’s known-issues page, status information or event notices. A single match, game or channel can have a distribution problem while the rest of the catalogue works. Check the service’s help centre for the exact device and browser version it currently supports; compatibility lists and instructions can change.

Try the same event on another supported device or browser before changing your home network. If the alternate device fails in the same way while other services remain healthy, the evidence favors a service-side or event-specific fault. Waiting for the provider to resolve it may be the only effective option.
Use the symptom to choose the next test
| What you see | Most useful next test | Likely direction |
|---|---|---|
| Several apps buffer on every device | Run speed tests on two devices, pause household traffic, then test Ethernet or another network | Home network, ISP outage or congestion |
| Only one app buffers, but other apps are stable | Update, restart, clear temporary data and test the app on a second supported device | App, account, compatibility or service issue |
| Only one television, console or browser fails | Restart that device, update it, test another browser or device, and check its connection path | Device software, local Wi‑Fi or compatibility |
| Picture repeatedly drops from HD but rarely pauses | Pause competing traffic and select a lower manual quality | Available bandwidth is fluctuating; adaptive playback is responding |
| Playback becomes audio-only or reports very low speed | Measure download speed on the viewing device and compare with the service’s guidance | Insufficient or unstable throughput for that service |
| One event fails while the service’s other content works | Check known issues and test the event on another supported device | Event feed or service-side incident |
When and how to contact support
Contact the streaming service when the problem is isolated to its app or event, persists after the app and device refresh, or affects the same content on multiple supported devices. Contact your ISP when several services and devices fail, wired and wireless tests both show poor results, or the measured speed remains below the relevant service guidance.
Prepare a useful report
NBA asks users with continuing problems to provide the content, event date and time, device or platform, location, a description, and screenshots or error messages. Add your measured download speed, whether you were on Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, and whether another app or network worked. This information lets support separate a local setup from an event or platform fault.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Name the exact event, league or channel.
- Give the date and local time, including your time zone if the service is international.
- Identify the device model, operating-system version and app or browser version when visible.
- State your country or region and whether you were using Wi‑Fi, Ethernet or mobile data.
- Include speed-test results taken during the failure and the test server or app if shown.
- Copy the exact error text and attach a screenshot with account or payment details hidden.
- Describe what changed after moving closer to the router, reducing quality or trying another device.
Should you buy a faster plan or a new router?
Only consider new equipment after the tests establish a persistent bottleneck. A faster plan may help when measured speeds remain below the service’s guidance for your household’s normal use and the ISP confirms the current tier is the limit. It will not fix a failing app, a bad event feed or a provider outage.

A replacement router is most defensible when the problem is limited to weak or inconsistent Wi‑Fi coverage, Ethernet works reliably, and placement or a restart does not solve the issue. The available guidance supports improving placement and restarting existing equipment; it does not show that a particular router model or a faster plan will necessarily fix buffering. Verify compatibility, coverage needs and local availability before spending money.
