If your TV and soundbar are connected by HDMI ARC but you hear nothing or the audio repeatedly cuts out, start with the connection and input selection: use the TV’s port labeled ARC or eARC, connect it to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT/TV (ARC/eARC) port, select the soundbar as the TV’s external speaker, and select the soundbar’s ARC input. Then restart both devices with the HDMI cable reseated. These steps resolve many ARC setup failures without replacing hardware.

If the problem remains, temporarily remove other HDMI devices, try a known-good cable, check audio-format and eARC compatibility, and cross-test the TV or soundbar with another compatible source. The test that changes the symptom tells you whether to investigate settings, the cable, the TV, or the soundbar.

What HDMI ARC needs to work

Audio Return Channel (ARC) sends sound from the TV back to a soundbar over one HDMI cable. It only works when the cable is connected to the dedicated return-audio ports and both devices are configured to use them. An ordinary HDMI input on the TV can receive video, but it is not the ARC connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • TV: use the HDMI socket labeled ARC or eARC.
  • Soundbar: use the socket labeled HDMI OUT, TV (ARC), or TV (eARC). A port labeled only HDMI IN is not the return-audio port.
  • TV audio output: choose the connected soundbar, external speaker, HDMI ARC, or HDMI eARC option.
  • Soundbar input: choose the input named ARC, TV ARC, D.In, or a similar digital-TV label.
  • Control link: HDMI-CEC may need to be enabled so the TV and soundbar can discover and control each other. Samsung calls this Anynet+; LG calls it SIMPLINK. Other manufacturers use different names.

Samsung’s support guidance describes ARC as requiring one HDMI cable, while LG explains that an HDMI ARC port can send TV audio to an external device. The labels and menu paths vary by model and release year, so use the wording shown on your own TV and soundbar.

Read the symptom before changing settings

There is a useful difference between a soundbar that is not detected at all and one that is detected but silent. No detection usually points you first toward the labeled ports, cable seating, CEC, or the selected source. Detection with silence or muting makes the TV’s digital-audio format and eARC compatibility more important. Audio that fails only when another HDMI device is connected calls for an isolation test rather than random changes to every menu.

Write down what the TV calls the soundbar, what input the bar displays, and whether the failure affects every TV source. That small record makes each later test comparable and gives support staff a clear history.

Follow this troubleshooting sequence

1. Verify the ports and cable direction

  1. Turn on the TV and soundbar.
  2. Look at the labels beside every HDMI socket. Confirm that one end of the cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC socket.
  3. Confirm that the other end is in the soundbar’s HDMI OUT/TV ARC/eARC socket.
  4. Remove any adapter, switch, splitter, or receiver between the two devices while testing. Connect the TV directly to the soundbar.
  5. Push both plugs fully into their sockets. A plug that looks connected can still be loose enough to break the ARC handshake.

Do not use a standard TV HDMI input merely because it is convenient or because it carries video from another device. ARC audio returns through the specifically labeled port. If the port label is difficult to read, check the model’s manual or the manufacturer’s port diagram rather than guessing from the socket’s position.

2. Select the TV’s external audio output

Open the TV’s sound settings and choose the connected soundbar or an HDMI ARC/eARC output instead of the internal TV speakers. The exact path differs, but it is usually under Settings, Sound or Audio, then Sound Output, Speaker, or Audio Output.

After selecting the external output, wait several seconds for the TV to establish the HDMI link. If the TV continues to show only internal speakers or reports that no ARC device is detected, continue with the power-cycle and cable checks below. A TV can still display video normally while its audio output remains set to the internal speakers, so picture alone does not confirm an ARC connection.

3. Select the soundbar’s ARC input

Use the soundbar remote or its buttons to select the input that corresponds to the HDMI return connection. Depending on the model, it may be labeled ARC, TV ARC, HDMI ARC, eARC, or D.In. Samsung instructions commonly use D.In and then indicate that the display changes to TV ARC; LG instructions describe selecting HDMI ARC/eARC.

If the soundbar remains on Bluetooth, HDMI IN, optical, or another source, it will not play audio arriving through the ARC port. Select the ARC input after every full restart because some bars return to the last-used source instead of selecting the TV automatically.

Note: High refresh rate requires devices to support HDMI 2.1 standard. Meanwhile, please manually adjust the resolution and refresh rate of the device in advance.

4. Enable HDMI-CEC where required

ARC discovery and power control often depend on HDMI-CEC. Enable the CEC setting in the TV’s system or general settings if the manufacturer requires it. The feature name is not universal: Samsung uses Anynet+, LG uses SIMPLINK, and other brands use their own names.

Enable CEC on the soundbar as well if its manual provides a separate option. Do not assume that a setting called “HDMI control” on one device has exactly the same behavior as CEC on another. If you cannot find the setting, search the TV’s manual for HDMI-CEC, device control, or the brand-specific name.

5. Reseat the cable and restart both devices

  1. Turn off the TV and soundbar.
  2. Unplug the HDMI cable from both ends.
  3. Wait briefly, then reconnect it to the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s ARC/eARC output.
  4. Turn on the soundbar first, then turn on the TV.
  5. Recheck the TV audio-output and soundbar-input selections.

This re-establishes the HDMI handshake. It is also the first response to intermittent cutouts because a link that was established incorrectly can behave differently after a complete restart. Perform the test with a direct cable run and no HDMI switch or splitter so there are fewer variables.

Fix intermittent sound that keeps cutting out

Disconnect other HDMI equipment temporarily

Leave only the TV and soundbar connected while testing. Unplug game consoles, streaming boxes, disc players, AV receivers, capture devices, HDMI switches, and other equipment from the TV’s remaining HDMI ports. Play the same TV content for long enough to see whether the dropouts return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the sound becomes stable, reconnect the other devices one at a time. The device whose reconnection brings back the cutouts is involved in the problem, although the test alone does not prove whether its CEC behavior, signal format, cable, or hardware is responsible. Keep notes on the order of reconnection; this prevents you from reconnecting several devices at once and losing the comparison.

Observe when the dropout occurs

Observed pattern Useful next test What the result tells you
No sound from every TV source Check ARC port, TV output, soundbar input, CEC, and cable seating The fault is likely in the ARC link, routing, or a device setting rather than one content source
Cutouts begin only when another HDMI device is connected Remove that device, then reconnect it alone The additional device or its HDMI/CEC interaction is implicated
ARC is detected but audio is silent or unstable Check digital-audio format and eARC mode against both manuals The devices may not agree on a supported audio format or eARC configuration
The issue changes after replacing the cable Keep the known-good cable in place and retest all sources The original cable or its physical connection was contributing to the failure
The problem follows the soundbar to another compatible TV/source Contact the soundbar manufacturer The soundbar or its ARC input is the stronger suspect
The soundbar works normally with another TV/source Investigate the original TV’s ARC port, settings, and software The original TV or its configuration is the stronger suspect

Compare the failure across content and devices

Try more than one TV source, such as built-in TV apps and a device connected directly to the TV. If every source fails in the same way, concentrate on the ARC path. If only one connected device causes silence or dropouts, leave the ARC settings unchanged and investigate that device and its connection separately. This comparison prevents a single faulty source from being mistaken for a soundbar failure.

Also note whether the TV still identifies the soundbar while audio is missing. Continued identification with missing sound points toward output-format or eARC compatibility; disappearance of the device points back toward the link, cable, port, or CEC negotiation.

Try a known-good HDMI cable

If the ARC source does not appear, the TV refuses to switch to TV ARC, or the connection repeatedly drops, replace the cable temporarily with one known to work with another HDMI setup. Samsung’s troubleshooting sequence explicitly includes cable replacement. This is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee that the cable is the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available guidance does not establish that a premium cable is required for ordinary ARC. For eARC, follow the cable and capability requirements stated in the particular TV and soundbar manuals. Keep the test simple: use a direct connection, avoid adapters, and make sure the replacement cable is fully seated.

Buy a replacement only after checking the ports, output selections, and cable seating. A known-good cable is useful because it changes one variable while leaving the TV and soundbar in place. If the replacement makes no difference, keep it out of the final diagnosis and continue with format checks and cross-testing rather than assuming that a more expensive cable will solve the problem.

Check digital-audio format and eARC settings

When the TV recognizes the soundbar but produces silence, crackling, or periodic muting, inspect the TV’s digital-audio output format. Common choices include an automatic or pass-through mode, PCM, and compressed or bitstream formats, but the correct choice depends on what both devices support. Samsung guidance identifies an audio-format mismatch as a possible cause and also calls out eARC configuration.

  1. Open the TV’s Sound or Audio Output settings.
  2. Find Digital Audio Output, Digital Sound Output, or the equivalent label.
  3. Note the current format and compare it with the soundbar’s supported formats in its manual.
  4. If eARC is available, check whether eARC mode is enabled on both devices and whether the soundbar supports the format selected by the TV.
  5. Change only one setting at a time, then test the same source again.

Do not apply one universal format or eARC value to every setup. A setting that works for one TV and soundbar combination can be unsupported by another. If a change makes the symptom worse, restore the previous value and record the result; the goal is to find a mutually supported mode, not simply to enable every advanced option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Isolate the failing device

Test the soundbar with another source or TV

Use a compatible second TV or source if one is available. Connect it directly with the same known-good HDMI cable and use the appropriate ARC/eARC ports. If the soundbar works there, the original TV’s port, settings, software, or compatibility deserves attention. If the soundbar fails in the second setup as well, the fault is more likely in the soundbar or its ARC input.

Test the original TV with another compatible audio device

A second soundbar or other ARC-compatible audio device can provide the reverse test. A working second device points toward the original soundbar. A second device that also fails points toward the TV, its ARC port, configuration, or the cable path.

Please note that the cable is relatively short, making it ideal for devices that are placed close to each other, such as connecting a laptop to a nearby monitor or a game console to a TV in a compact space

Cross-testing is more useful than guessing from a single symptom because it shows whether the fault follows the TV or follows the soundbar. Use the same source and, where possible, the same cable during each comparison so the result is meaningful.

Update software and firmware

If the physical connection, routing, CEC, cable, and format checks do not resolve an eARC problem, check for updates for the TV and soundbar. Samsung’s support guidance recommends checking TV software and soundbar firmware in this situation. Update menus and procedures vary by model, and some features are available only on particular releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After an update, restart both devices and repeat the direct two-device ARC test before reconnecting other HDMI equipment. If an update changes the menu names or available eARC choices, use the new model-specific instructions rather than copying an older setup path.

Use optical audio as a fallback

If both devices have optical ports, an optical cable can provide an alternative TV-to-soundbar connection. Samsung and LG support material lists optical as an alternate connection method. Check both manuals for supported audio formats and control limitations before relying on it.

Optical bypasses the HDMI ARC handshake, so it can confirm that the soundbar can reproduce TV audio even when ARC is failing. It does not repair the HDMI ports or preserve every HDMI-based control or audio capability. If you switch to optical, select optical on the TV and the soundbar rather than leaving either device on ARC. Treat this as a fallback or diagnostic path, not evidence that the HDMI fault has been repaired.

When to contact support

Request manufacturer support after you have confirmed the labeled ports, reseated and replaced the cable, tested with other HDMI devices disconnected, checked compatible audio settings, and performed a cross-test where possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Contact the TV manufacturer when the TV fails to detect multiple known-good ARC-compatible soundbars or the fault stays with the TV during cross-testing.
  • Contact the soundbar manufacturer when the fault follows the soundbar to another compatible TV or source.
  • Have the exact model numbers, software or firmware versions, cable arrangement, selected inputs, and results of each cross-test ready for the support representative.

Samsung’s published instructions cover Samsung TVs and soundbars released in 2024 and later on one regional support page, while its eARC guidance is for Canadian products. LG notes that menu paths can vary by model or year. Treat the labels and procedures above as a diagnostic framework, then follow the instructions for your specific models.

Quick decision checklist

  1. Is the cable in the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s HDMI OUT/TV ARC/eARC port?
  2. Is the TV output set to the soundbar or HDMI ARC/eARC?
  3. Is the soundbar input set to ARC, TV ARC, eARC, or D.In?
  4. Is HDMI-CEC enabled under the manufacturer’s name for that feature?
  5. Have both devices been powered off, disconnected, reconnected, and restarted?
  6. Does the problem remain with all other HDMI devices unplugged?
  7. Does a known-good HDMI cable change detection or stability?
  8. Do the TV’s digital-audio format and eARC mode match the soundbar’s supported capabilities?
  9. Does the problem follow the TV or the soundbar in a cross-test?
  10. Have the TV and soundbar software or firmware been checked for updates?

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no sound even though the TV detects my soundbar over HDMI ARC?

Check the soundbar’s selected input, the TV’s digital-audio output format, and eARC compatibility. Detection confirms that the devices see each other, but they still need a mutually supported audio format and the soundbar must be on ARC, TV ARC, eARC, or D.In.

Can I connect the cable to any HDMI port on the TV?

No. Use the socket specifically labeled ARC or eARC. A standard HDMI input can carry video but is not the return-audio connection.

What does Samsung call HDMI-CEC?

Samsung calls its HDMI-CEC feature Anynet+. LG calls the equivalent feature SIMPLINK. Other manufacturers use different names, so check the TV manual.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need an expensive HDMI cable for ARC?

Official troubleshooting guidance supports trying a known-good replacement cable, but it does not establish that a premium cable is required for ordinary ARC. For eARC, follow the cable requirements in both device manuals.

Why does the sound cut out only when another HDMI device is connected?

Disconnect every other HDMI device and test with only the TV and soundbar. Reconnect devices one at a time. The device whose reconnection brings back the cutouts is involved, although the test does not by itself identify whether the cause is CEC behavior, signal format, a cable, or hardware.

Would an optical cable fix HDMI ARC?

Optical can provide a separate TV-to-soundbar connection when both devices have optical ports and can confirm that the soundbar reproduces TV audio. It bypasses ARC but does not repair HDMI ports or retain every HDMI control and audio capability.

How can I tell whether the TV or soundbar is faulty?

Test the soundbar with another compatible TV or source, and test the original TV with another ARC-compatible audio device if possible. If the problem follows the soundbar, contact its manufacturer; if it stays with the TV, investigate the TV or contact its manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I contact the manufacturer?

Escalate after checking labeled ports, settings, CEC, cable seating, a known-good cable, audio compatibility, other HDMI devices, and firmware. Provide model numbers, software versions, cable arrangement, selected inputs, and cross-test results.

The Bottom Line

Start with the labeled ARC/eARC ports, the TV’s external-audio selection, the soundbar’s ARC input, and HDMI-CEC. Reseat the cable and restart both devices, then isolate other HDMI equipment and try a known-good cable. If ARC is detected but audio is missing or unstable, compare digital-audio and eARC settings with the manuals. Cross-test the TV and soundbar to see which device the fault follows; use optical only as a compatible fallback, and contact the appropriate manufacturer when the fault remains device-specific.
