Fix a social media plugin by identifying the failing layer before changing settings. A missing button or feed is usually a placement, cache, browser-extension, or CSS problem; a failed connection points to REST/AJAX, server requests, or account permissions; an error that began after an update usually indicates a plugin, theme, or API conflict.
Use the sequence below on a staging copy whenever possible. It starts with reversible checks, then isolates conflicts and server dependencies without disabling WordPress features that other administration tools need.

Open the site in a private browser window and test both the public page and the WordPress editor. Record the exact error, the affected network, the page or template, and whether every visitor sees the problem or only one browser does. “Not working” describes several different failures, and each requires a different test.

Keep a short environment record while troubleshooting: WordPress version, PHP version, active theme, plugin version, affected social network, and the date the failure began. That record is essential if you need support or must roll back.

Make sure WordPress is actually rendering the feature
A correctly installed plugin does not automatically place its output on every page. In the plugin’s settings, confirm that the feature is enabled for the relevant location, then inspect the location itself:
- Block: Edit the page or template and verify the plugin block is present, configured, and not hidden on the current device.
- Widget: Go to Appearance → Widgets and check the widget area used by the affected template.
- Shortcode: Confirm the shortcode is in the page content or template and that it has not been escaped as plain text.
- Theme template: Verify the hook or template part that the plugin expects is still used by the page template.
- Floating buttons: Check the plugin’s floating or automatic-insertion setting, including any exclusions for post types, categories, or individual URLs.
Preview the page while logged out. An administrator may see controls or cached content that ordinary visitors do not. If the plugin provides separate desktop and mobile placement options, test both breakpoints.

Use the browser’s Inspect tool to determine whether the buttons or feed markup is present. If it is present but not visible, look for a theme rule setting display:none, visibility:hidden, zero opacity, an unexpected z-index, or a container with zero height or overflow clipping. Temporarily switching to the default theme on staging is safer than editing the live theme blindly.
Clear cache and remove browser interference
Cache and privacy tools can hide a working integration or block the requests that populate it. Perform the checks in this order:
- Purge the WordPress page or object cache.
- Purge any server, reverse-proxy, or CDN cache serving the affected URL.
- Hard-refresh the browser after the purge.
- Open the page in a private window and in a second browser.
- Temporarily disable ad blockers, tracking protection, script blockers, and privacy extensions for the site.
If the feature works only in a private window or a second browser, the fault is local browser state or an extension, not necessarily WordPress. Clear cookies and site storage for the domain, then re-enable extensions one at a time to identify the blocker. Do not ask visitors to disable protection permanently; instead, fix the blocked script, domain, or content-security rule when you control it.

Isolate plugin and theme conflicts safely on staging
WordPress.com Support defines a conflict as “two plugins, or a plugin and a theme, each work correctly on their own and produce an error only when both are active.” The safest way to prove a conflict is to use a staging copy, not the live site.

- Create or refresh a staging copy and prevent search engines from indexing it.
- Reproduce the failure on staging so you know the copy contains the same problem.
- Deactivate all plugins except the social media plugin under test.
- Switch temporarily to a default WordPress theme.
- Test the exact page, editor action, or publishing workflow again.
- Reactivate plugins one at a time, testing after each activation.
- Switch back to the production theme only after the plugin set has been tested.
The component activated immediately before the failure returns is the conflict candidate. Leave it inactive on staging and test a current version of that component, a configuration change, or an alternative integration method. If no conflict appears on staging, compare the live server’s PHP version, caching rules, security firewall, and database content before making a production change.
Loopback troubleshooting uses the same one-by-one reactivation method. Keep a written log of each test and its result; otherwise it is easy to lose the sequence and activate several variables at once.
Inspect REST, AJAX, and loopback requests
Open the browser developer tools, select the Network panel, reproduce the failure, and filter for wp-json, admin-ajax.php, or requests named by the plugin. Record the HTTP status and response body. Common meanings are:

| 404 | Missing route, rewritten URL, or retired endpoint | Check the plugin version, permalink rules, and whether the social API endpoint still exists. |
| 429 | Rate limiting | Wait for the limit window, reduce repeated tests, and check whether a proxy or social platform is throttling requests. |
| 500 | PHP fatal error or server-side exception | Review the server/PHP error log and reproduce with other plugins disabled on staging. |
Also open Tools → Site Health in the WordPress dashboard and inspect the REST API and loopback results. A warning there can explain an editor that cannot save or a connection screen that never finishes loading.

Do not “fix” an integration by disabling the REST API. WordPress’s REST API FAQ states: “You should not disable the REST API; doing so will break WordPress Admin functionality that depends on the API being active.” Repair the failing route, authentication, nonce, firewall rule, or plugin conflict instead. Logged-in REST calls and manual AJAX requests may require the user’s cookies and a valid wp_rest nonce; stripping those headers can create a misleading 401 or 403 during testing.
Check activation and server dependencies
If the plugin will not activate
Confirm that the uploaded ZIP is the plugin package itself, not a documentation bundle containing another ZIP. WordPress can reject a package with an invalid plugin header. Clear a persistent plugin or object cache, verify that the web server user can read the plugin files, and check storage and file-permission errors in the PHP or server log. If activation produces a fatal error, restore the staging copy and identify the first failing file and PHP message before trying again.
If counts, feeds, or publishing requests fail on the server
Ask the host to confirm that PHP cURL is enabled and that the server can make outbound HTTPS requests to the required social-platform endpoints. Several numbered errors in social-plugin support documentation are associated with cURL failures. A firewall, DNS problem, TLS inspection device, or hosting policy can block outbound requests even when the public website loads normally.
Request a result that identifies the blocked destination and error, not a vague statement that “the server is fine.” Never paste access tokens, app secrets, or full authorization responses into a support ticket. Redact them before sharing logs.
Reconnect Facebook or Instagram correctly
An intact WordPress installation can still fail when the social account authorization has expired or points to the wrong asset. Disconnect and reconnect from the plugin’s account screen, then check each item:

- Sign in with the user who administers the correct Facebook Page or Instagram professional account.
- Choose the intended Page, business, and Instagram account rather than accepting an old selection.
- Review the permissions shown in Meta Business Integrations and grant only the permissions the plugin requires.
- Confirm that the connected app is not left in development mode when production users need access.
- Return to WordPress and verify that the plugin displays the selected Page or account before attempting to publish.
Connection guides from Blog2Social document missing-page discovery, expired authorization, and permission errors as separate causes. If the Page is not offered in the selector, fix the user’s business assignment and Page role first; repeatedly clicking reconnect will not add a Page the account cannot administer. If publishing fails only for one content type, check the plugin’s post-type and account-specific publishing rules after authorization succeeds.
When an update caused the failure
Note the update that preceded the change and reproduce it on staging. Compare the plugin’s stated WordPress and PHP compatibility with the versions running on the site. Test the newest available plugin release and the default theme before downgrading anything. If a rollback is necessary, take a database and file backup, perform it on staging first, and verify that scheduled publishing, existing shortcodes, and account connections still work.
Do not leave an old version as a permanent solution when it contains a security issue. Use the rollback only to restore service while the vendor or site maintainer addresses the incompatibility. If an external social API changed, an older plugin may stop working again even if the immediate WordPress conflict is gone.
Decide whether replacing the plugin is justified
Replacement is warranted when staging confirms a reproducible incompatibility, the vendor has not updated a required social API, or support confirms that the integration has been retired. Before switching, export or document the current settings, account mappings, shortcodes, widget locations, and scheduled posts so the replacement can be tested without altering production content.

Install a replacement on staging, connect a test account where possible, and verify both visitor-facing output and the editor workflow. Only after the complete path works should you schedule the production cutover.
Use symptom-specific recovery branches
Buttons are still missing after cache tests
Inspect the page source and DOM. If no plugin markup exists, revisit the block, widget, shortcode, template, and exclusion settings. If markup exists, compare computed CSS with the default theme and disable only the rule that hides or clips it on staging.

The connection window spins forever
Check the Network panel for a failed REST or AJAX request, then Site Health for REST and loopback warnings. A 401 or 403 requires authentication, nonce, permission, or firewall work; a 500 requires PHP and server-log investigation.
Publishing fails but the account connects
Confirm the selected Page or business account, inspect granted permissions, and ask the host to test outbound HTTPS and PHP cURL. A successful login does not prove that the server can complete the publishing request.
Only one browser or visitor reports the problem
Reproduce privately, clear site storage, and test with extensions disabled. If other browsers work, focus on local cache, cookies, content filters, or privacy settings rather than changing the WordPress installation.
