A smartwatch usually shows the wrong time because it has not received an updated time from its paired phone, network, or GPS, or because it is set to manual time. Start by checking the phone’s date, time, and time zone, then reconnect and sync the watch before trying a reset. A mismatch of exactly an hour or a whole time zone after travel or a daylight-saving change points first to a time-zone update; a watch that gradually falls behind needs a synchronization and time-source check.
Why a smartwatch loses or displays the wrong time
Smartwatches do not all get their time the same way. Depending on the model and settings, a watch may rely on its paired phone, a companion app, a mobile network, GPS, or a manually set clock. If the source is inaccurate or the watch has not synchronized with it, the displayed time can be wrong.
- The paired phone is wrong: A watch that follows its phone can inherit an incorrect time or time zone.
- The watch has not synced: A disconnected watch may not yet have received a recent time update.
- Time is set manually: Manual settings can prevent automatic changes for daylight saving or travel.
- The time zone has changed: Travel, a daylight-saving transition, or a long period powered off can leave some watches showing the old zone until they update.
- GPS or network time is unavailable: Some models use these sources, but availability and behavior vary by model.
These are troubleshooting clues, not proof of a particular fault. Official guidance from Apple, Samsung, and Garmin describes different update methods and model-specific steps.

Use the type of time error to choose what to check
| What you notice | Check first |
|---|---|
| The watch is off by about an hour or a full time zone, especially after travel or a daylight-saving change | Phone time zone, automatic time settings, and whether the watch has synchronized since the change |
| The watch is gradually falling behind or gaining time | Whether it is paired and syncing, whether its time source is automatic, and whether the phone clock is correct |
| The watch is wrong after being powered off for a long time | Reconnect or sync it; some standalone models may need their time set again |
| The phone is correct but a successful sync does not fix the watch | Model-specific time-source settings and the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions |
A fixed offset can suggest a zone or update issue, while a growing discrepancy makes synchronization worth checking. Neither pattern alone identifies a hardware failure.

Fix the time in this order
- Check the paired phone. Confirm its date, time, and time zone. On Apple devices, Apple recommends an internet connection, current software, automatic date and time, and the relevant location setting for automatic time-zone updates. See Apple’s date and time guidance for the settings that apply to your device.
- Reconnect and request a sync. Make sure the watch is paired or connected as intended, then open its companion app and start a sync if available. Garmin documents a manual sync through Garmin Connect in its time troubleshooting instructions.
- Check automatic versus manual time. If the watch is set manually, switch to automatic time when your model supports it. Garmin states that manual time will not automatically adjust for time-zone changes or daylight saving. Samsung’s steps for checking automatic network time apply only to supported models; use its model-specific guidance.
- Try GPS if your watch supports it. Take a GPS-equipped watch outdoors to an open area and let it acquire a signal. Garmin says a GPS acquisition can update time on supported watches; models without integrated GPS may need to sync through the phone app instead. Exact behavior depends on the model.
- Restart the watch and check for software updates. This can help when a device has not applied updated time-zone information or needs routine troubleshooting. Apple advises restarting a paired Apple Watch if prompted that updated time-zone information is available; Garmin also lists power cycling and software updates among further checks.
- Re-pair or reset only if needed. If the previous checks fail, follow the official instructions for your exact model to remove and add it again in its app, or reset it. Samsung warns that a reset erases data stored on the watch, so back up first and consult the model’s instructions.
How time updates differ by watch ecosystem
| Ecosystem | What the official guidance establishes | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch | Apple’s guidance covers automatic date and time, time-zone settings, and restarting a paired Apple Watch when it reports that updated time-zone information is available. | The cited page does not give one universal Apple Watch procedure or menu path for every time-loss problem. Follow instructions for your watch and paired device. |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch | Samsung says a paired watch syncs time with its phone. Its instructions also discuss standalone watches, automatic network time, manual settings, restarting, and resetting. | Standalone behavior and menu options depend on model and software; Samsung notes that some steps do not apply to watches that cannot be set up standalone. |
| Garmin | Garmin says most watches update through Garmin Connect synchronization or GPS acquisition. A manual setting can stop automatic time-zone and daylight-saving adjustments. | Time-source settings, GPS availability, and menu sequences vary by model. Garmin directs users to the relevant owner’s manual. |
Garmin’s support article and, for the Bounce specifically, the Bounce Owner’s Manual describe phone synchronization and GPS updates. The Bounce instructions should not be assumed to apply to other Garmin models.

If the phone clock is correct, the watch is connected, and a successful sync or supported GPS update still leaves the displayed time wrong, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model or contact its support team. The symptom alone does not establish that the watch needs repair or replacement.
