If your smart kettle will not connect, start with the kettle’s power, the exact app for its model, and the network requirements in its manual. Many models need 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi during setup; some also use Bluetooth, so keep your phone close and allow the requested nearby-device permissions. Restart the kettle, phone, and router before attempting a model-specific reset and re-pair. If the kettle is already linked to another account, the original owner may need to invite you. Persistent failures after those checks belong with the manufacturer’s support team.

First, identify what is actually failing

“Won’t connect” can describe several different problems. Separating them prevents you from factory-resetting a kettle when the real issue is a wrong app or a weak signal.

  • It never appears during setup: suspect the wrong app, disabled wireless or Bluetooth, an unsupported Wi‑Fi band, distance, or missing phone permissions.
  • It appears but setup fails: check the router band, password, signal, and the model’s pairing mode.
  • It was connected but now says offline: check internet access and range, then restart the router and kettle before re-pairing.
  • The app shows the kettle but commands do nothing: verify that the kettle is powered and seated on its base, then check whether wireless has been disabled.
  • It works for one household member but cannot be added by another: check account ownership and sharing rather than repeating Wi‑Fi setup.
  • It heats locally but not through Alexa or another assistant: troubleshoot the kettle’s own app first, then the smart-home skill and account link.

Do not open the appliance or attempt electrical repairs as part of a connectivity fix. The official guidance for the models covered here addresses setup, network, account, and software conditions, not universal internal repairs.

1. Check power, the base, and basic operation

  1. Plug the base into a working outlet and switch it on if it has a separate switch.
  2. Place the kettle fully on the powered base. A kettle that is not making contact may appear offline even though the app is working.
  3. Confirm the water level is within the markings before trying a heating command.
  4. Try the kettle’s local controls. If it will not power on or heat locally, stop treating the problem as Wi‑Fi troubleshooting and consult the model’s manual or manufacturer.

Mi Smart Kettle Pro guidance specifically calls for checking that the kettle is on its base and that the base has power. Swan’s initial checks likewise include power and water level. These are model examples, not a universal electrical diagnosis.

2. Use the app intended for the exact model

App names and pairing flows are not interchangeable across product families. Read the label on the kettle or base and match the complete model name, not just the brand.

Model or family App or setup detail documented by the manufacturer What to verify
Mi Smart Kettle Pro Its FAQ directs owners to Mi Home and describes Bluetooth proximity, power cycling, and rebinding. Use the correct Mi Home product entry and keep the phone near the kettle.
iKettle 3rd generation Smarter’s setup guidance requires a 2.4 GHz signal and recommends setup close to the router. Use the iKettle setup flow and check whether another account already owns the appliance.
Swan Alexa Smart Kettle Its support instructions cover the kettle app, stable 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi, and Alexa linking. Confirm the kettle is online in its own app before checking Alexa.
Fellow EKG Pro and Pro Studio Fellow says these models pair through the EKG Updater app rather than the Fellow App. Install EKG Updater, turn Wireless on, and follow its model-specific reconnection flow.

Update the app when the manufacturer recommends it. If Fellow’s app flow still fails after the basic checks, its support guidance suggests uninstalling and reinstalling the relevant app. Do not assume an app used by a visually similar kettle supports your model.

3. Check Wi‑Fi band, password, and signal

Look up the exact model’s network requirements before changing router settings. Several smart kettles specify 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi for setup, but that is not a rule for every product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use 2.4 GHz when the model requires it

Smarter specifies 2.4 GHz for the iKettle 3rd generation. Swan’s Alexa kettle guidance also calls for a stable 2.4 GHz connection and adequate router range. If your router presents one network name for both 2.4 and 5 GHz, your phone may move between bands while the kettle is being configured. Follow the router’s own instructions to keep the phone on 2.4 GHz during setup, or select the specific 2.4 GHz network if your router exposes separate names.

Do not transfer network rules from an unrelated appliance. Xiaomi’s documentation for a separate 5L hot-water dispenser contains detailed constraints, but those requirements do not establish the requirements for every Xiaomi kettle or for other brands.

Move the kettle close to the router

Perform first-time setup in the same room as the router, with the phone nearby. Smarter explicitly recommends completing iKettle setup as close to the router as possible. Swan identifies range as a connection factor. After the kettle is working, move it to its normal location and test the signal there.

A range extender is relevant only if the kettle’s location has weak coverage and the model otherwise supports the network. It cannot correct a wrong app, a disabled wireless setting, account binding, or a failed kettle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the network without weakening security unnecessarily

Confirm that the Wi‑Fi password is correct and that the phone itself can reach the internet on the network being used for setup. Guest and public networks may be unsupported; follow the kettle’s documentation. Do not simplify encryption or change router security merely because a generic troubleshooting article suggests it. Router security, password format, and band behavior vary by model, and the manufacturer’s instructions should control.

4. Enable Bluetooth and stay near the kettle

Some setup flows use Bluetooth to discover or provision the kettle even though the final connection is Wi‑Fi. Xiaomi cites Bluetooth distance as a reason to keep the phone near the Mi Smart Kettle Pro. Fellow also recommends enabling Bluetooth and staying close while reconnecting.

  1. Place the phone within a short distance of the kettle and its base.
  2. Turn Bluetooth off and back on, then reopen the kettle app.
  3. Grant only the nearby-device, Bluetooth, location, or positioning permissions that the product’s setup screen requests. Permission names differ by phone and operating system.
  4. Keep the app in the foreground until discovery and Wi‑Fi provisioning finish.

A separate Xiaomi dispenser FAQ mentions Bluetooth and positioning, but that does not prove every kettle needs location access. Use the exact permissions requested by your kettle’s own setup process.

5. Restart in a controlled order

Restarting clears temporary discovery and network state without erasing the kettle’s account association. Use this order before a factory reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the kettle app completely and reopen it.
  2. Restart the phone if the app remains stuck or cannot discover any device.
  3. Turn the kettle off, remove it from the base if the manual permits, wait briefly, then return it to the powered base and switch it on.
  4. Restart the router. Wait until another device can browse normally before retrying the kettle.
  5. Put the phone near the kettle and router, enable Bluetooth if required, and repeat the manufacturer’s pairing flow.

Swan recommends restarting the kettle and router for connection problems. Xiaomi’s guidance includes restarting phone Bluetooth, powering the kettle off and on, and rebinding when necessary. These actions are low risk; they do not replace the model-specific reset procedure below.

  • CORDLESS CONVENIENCE: Our cord-free portable kettle for heating water allows you to serve guests in another room while leaving the base plugged in.

6. Reset and re-pair only with the model’s instructions

If the kettle still cannot be found or remains offline after the restart, return it to its documented Wi‑Fi or pairing mode. Reset controls and button sequences differ, so there is no safe universal “hold this button for ten seconds” instruction.

  1. Open the exact model’s manual or official support article and identify its reset or pairing command.
  2. Follow the stated sequence exactly, including any requirement for the kettle to be on its base or powered.
  3. In the correct app, remove a stale device entry only when the manufacturer’s instructions call for it.
  4. Pair again beside the router on the required band, with Bluetooth enabled if the flow uses it.
  5. Wait for the app to report completion before moving the kettle.

Swan recommends resetting and reconnecting its kettle when needed. Fellow documents wireless controls specific to its own models. Xiaomi’s guidance refers to rebinding after power and Bluetooth checks. Do not apply one brand’s reset combination to another brand.

7. Fix an offline kettle versus an unresponsive command

When the app says “offline”

First confirm that the router has internet access and that the kettle is within range. Restart the router and kettle, then check the app again. If the kettle’s indicator or local controls show no power, return to the base and power checks. If it remains offline, use the model-specific reset and reconnection flow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the app shows the kettle but commands do nothing

Check that the kettle is seated on its powered base, contains an appropriate amount of water, and has not been switched off locally. For Fellow Pro and Pro Studio kettles, verify that Wireless is turned on; Fellow states that the EKG Updater requires Wireless to be enabled. If local operation works but app commands do not, close and reopen the app, then reconnect through the documented flow.

When discovery fails immediately

Recheck the app, 2.4 GHz requirement, Bluetooth, permissions, and phone distance. A discovery failure is more consistent with setup conditions than with a heating or water-level problem.

8. Check account ownership and smart-home linking

The kettle is already linked to another account

An appliance can be online while refusing a second owner’s setup. Smarter says an iKettle 3rd generation that is already connected does not need to be set up again; the first user must invite the new user. Ask the original account holder to use the product’s sharing or invitation function. Do not repeatedly factory-reset a kettle when the manufacturer’s account model calls for an invitation.

The kettle works in its own app but not with Alexa

Complete the kettle’s own connection first. Then verify that the relevant Alexa skill is enabled and that the correct account is linked. Swan lists this as a separate check for its Alexa Smart Kettle. If the kettle is offline in its own app, repairing Alexa will not solve the underlying Wi‑Fi problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Model-specific checkpoints

Symptom Most relevant documented checkpoint Next action
Mi Smart Kettle Pro is not discovered Phone too far away, Bluetooth state, base power, app version, or stale binding. Move close, restart Bluetooth, power-cycle the kettle, update or reopen Mi Home, and rebind if instructed.
iKettle 3rd generation setup fails 2.4 GHz requirement, distance from router, or an existing user account. Set up beside the router on 2.4 GHz; have the original user invite another account.
Swan Alexa Smart Kettle is offline Stable 2.4 GHz signal, router range, power, water level, app state, or Alexa link. Check those items, restart kettle and router, then reset and reconnect if required.
Fellow EKG Pro or Pro Studio cannot reconnect Wrong app, Wireless disabled, Bluetooth or proximity, router band behavior, or model-specific reset state. Use EKG Updater, turn Wireless on, stay close, and follow Fellow’s documented router and reset guidance.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a family app by habit: the Fellow EKG Updater and Fellow App are not interchangeable for the Pro and Pro Studio models.
  • Testing only on 5 GHz: a kettle that specifies 2.4 GHz may never complete setup there.
  • Pairing from another room: weak signal and Bluetooth distance can prevent discovery even when the kettle works beside the router.
  • Resetting before checking ownership: an invitation from the existing account may be the intended solution for an already-linked iKettle.
  • Changing router security at random: unsupported encryption changes can create a new problem and are not a universal fix.
  • Assuming an extender fixes everything: it helps only with coverage at the kettle’s location.
  • Using a generic button sequence: reset controls are model-specific.

When to contact the manufacturer

Escalate when the exact app and model are confirmed, the kettle has power, the documented Wi‑Fi band and range are available, Bluetooth and requested permissions are enabled, the phone and router have been restarted, and the model-specific reset and re-pair procedure still fails. Swan explicitly advises contacting customer support for persistent problems.

Include this information in your support request:

  • Complete model name and, if available, serial number.
  • Phone model, operating-system version, and kettle-app version.
  • Router band arrangement, such as separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names or a combined network.
  • The exact error message and whether the kettle appears in discovery.
  • Whether local heating works and whether the kettle was previously registered to another account.
  • The restart, reset, and re-pair steps already attempted.

The official support material cited here does not establish universal fault rates, repair prices, warranty outcomes, or a single reset method for all smart kettles. Those details must come from the manufacturer for your model and region.

A quick decision path

  1. No lights or local heating: check the outlet, powered base, and water level; consult the manual if the appliance remains dead.
  2. App cannot find the kettle: confirm the app, 2.4 GHz requirement, Bluetooth, permissions, and close-range setup.
  3. Setup starts but fails: stay beside the router, verify the password and band, restart, and retry.
  4. Kettle was previously connected: restart the router and kettle, then use the model-specific reset and reconnection flow.
  5. Another person cannot add it: check account ownership and invitation sharing.
  6. Own app works but Alexa does not: enable and relink the correct skill after the kettle is online.
  7. Still failing after all model-specific steps: contact the manufacturer with the diagnostic details above.
