Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
SSH problems that feel identical to the user usually have three different causes: a delay before authentication, lag while typing after login, or commands that execute slowly on the VPS. Identify which symptom you have before changing settings. Measure a baseline with time ssh user@host true, then compare the hostname with the server IP and IPv4 with IPv6. Those tests show whether the delay is in name resolution, the network path, authentication, the terminal session, or the VPS itself.
Start by separating the three kinds of “slow”
Run the same short command several times, both by hostname and by address:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →time ssh user@host true
time ssh user@203.0.113.10 true
time ssh -4 user@host true
time ssh -6 user@host true
Remove the accidental leading space before the second time command if you copy this example; it is shown on a separate line only for readability. Use your real account, hostname and address.
| What you observe | Most likely area | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Long pause before a password, key prompt or shell | Name resolution, address-family selection, authentication or server-side lookup | Hostname versus IP, ssh -4 versus ssh -6, SSH service logs and authentication backend |
| Login is quick, but keystrokes or screen updates arrive late | Round-trip latency, packet loss, a congested route or an overloaded endpoint | Ping/route measurements, packet-loss checks, client and VPS network graphs, then Mosh if UDP is allowed |
| Typing is normal, but commands take a long time | VPS CPU, memory, swap, disk I/O wait, process contention or the application itself | uptime, top/htop, free -h, vmstat 1, iostat and application logs |
Keep the results of each test. A single successful connection can hide an intermittent route or a periodic resource spike, so reproduce the problem while watching both the client and the VPS.

Fix a delay before authentication
Test forward and reverse DNS first
The OpenSSH FAQ notes that delays longer than about 10 seconds are typically caused by name-resolution problems. A server may perform a reverse lookup of the connecting address, while the client resolves the hostname before it ever reaches the server. Test both directions from a machine that can reach the VPS:
getent hosts host.example
getent hosts 203.0.113.10
nslookup host.example
nslookup 203.0.113.10
The forward lookup should return the intended address, and the reverse lookup should return promptly or clearly report that no PTR record exists. Compare the result with a direct IP connection:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11time ssh user@host.example true
time ssh user@203.0.113.10 true
If the IP is fast but the hostname is slow, repair the DNS record, resolver configuration or stale search domain rather than changing SSH authentication. If the server’s reverse lookup is the delay, correct the PTR record when you control it, or use the server-side lookup setting described below as a targeted diagnostic.
Compare IPv4 and IPv6
A broken or unreachable IPv6 route can make a client wait before falling back to IPv4. Force each family:
time ssh -4 user@host.example true
time ssh -6 user@host.example true
If IPv4 is consistently fast and IPv6 stalls or fails, investigate the AAAA record, the VPS’s IPv6 address and gateway, and the network’s IPv6 route. AddressFamily inet in the client configuration is an IPv4-only diagnostic and workaround:
Host host.example
AddressFamily inet
Put host-specific settings in ~/.ssh/config, test a new connection, and fix the underlying IPv6 problem if you need IPv6 elsewhere. Do not disable an address family globally without understanding which systems depend on it.

Use UseDNS no only as a controlled server-side test
On configurations that perform reverse lookups, UseDNS no disables most server-side DNS lookups. Edit the SSH daemon configuration only from a session you can keep open, validate the file, and reload the service according to your distribution’s procedure. Keep a second administrative session available in case a syntax error prevents a reload. Confirm the change in the SSH logs and by repeating the timing test.
This setting does not repair a broken resolver, a slow identity provider or a blocked network. Never combine it with blind changes to authentication methods or firewall rules. Make one change, test, and inspect the logs.
Inspect authentication and SSH service logs
When DNS and address-family tests do not explain the pause, increase client verbosity for one connection:
ssh -vvv user@host
Look for the last timestamped stage before the pause: TCP connection, key exchange, user authentication, or session creation. On the VPS, inspect the SSH service and authentication logs using the commands appropriate to the operating system, for example:
sudo journalctl -u ssh --since "10 minutes ago"
sudo journalctl -u sshd --since "10 minutes ago"
Some systems use an authentication log file instead of a journal. Check for delays from a remote identity backend, account policy, host-based authentication or a saturated logging subsystem. If only one account is affected, compare its shell and authentication configuration with a known-good account. If every account is affected, prioritize the daemon, DNS and VPS resource checks.
Fix delayed keystrokes and screen updates after login
Measure the path, not just the login time
SSH is interactive and waits for the server before displaying your typed characters. A connection can complete authentication quickly yet feel unusable when the round-trip time is high or packets are retransmitted. During the lag, measure round-trip time and loss from the client to the VPS and inspect the route with your operating system’s standard ping and traceroute tools. Compare a wired connection, another access network, or a nearer VPS region when those options are available.

Also watch the VPS’s network and CPU graphs while reproducing the problem. A busy guest, host-level contention or an exhausted network quota can delay output even when the route from your computer is healthy. There is no universal “acceptable” latency number: the effect depends on the application, packet loss, terminal update rate and whether the session is typing-intensive.
Use Mosh when interactive latency or roaming is the problem
Mosh is designed for interactive shells on high-latency, lossy or changing networks. Unlike ordinary SSH, it can display your local typing immediately, tolerate packet loss and keep the session usable when you move between networks. It still uses SSH for login, then starts mosh-server and switches the interactive traffic to UDP.
Before trying it, verify all of the following:
- The Mosh client is installed on your computer.
- The
mosh-serverbinary is installed and executable on the VPS. - The VPS firewall, cloud security group and any intermediate firewall permit the UDP port range configured for Mosh.
- Your network permits outbound and return UDP traffic.
Start a session with your normal SSH identity and host:
mosh user@host
If Mosh cannot exchange packets, treat that as a network-path or firewall problem. If it hangs while starting, the remote shell startup files or the launch of mosh-server may be at fault. Test a clean shell, inspect the server’s Mosh installation and review the client’s diagnostic output. Mosh does not make a CPU-bound command faster and should not be exposed by opening an unnecessarily broad UDP range.
Keep the terminal usable with a multiplexer
A multiplexer protects work from disconnects; it does not reduce physical network latency. Ubuntu’s OpenSSH guidance recommends tmux or screen so a remote process continues after the SSH transport disappears.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A minimal tmux workflow is:
- Connect to the VPS and create a named session:
tmux new -s work. - Start the long-running command inside tmux.
- Detach without stopping it by pressing
Ctrl-b, thend. - Reconnect after a network failure and run
tmux attach -t work.
The equivalent durability pattern works with screen. A multiplexer cannot rescue a process that exits on its own, so log important jobs and check their exit status after reattaching.

Reduce repeated connection setup with SSH multiplexing
If each new SSH command spends time on key exchange or authentication, reuse one authenticated connection. Add a host-specific block to ~/.ssh/config:
Host host.example
ControlMaster auto
ControlPath ~/.ssh/control-%C
ControlPersist 5m
The first connection creates the master; later connections to the same host can reuse it for the persistence period. Test it with a second SSH command and remove the control socket if a stale or incompatible session causes errors:
ssh -O exit user@host.example
Use a private control-socket directory with permissions that prevent other local users from accessing the connection. Multiplexing helps repeated setup time only; it cannot fix a slow first handshake, an overloaded VPS or lag inside an already-open session.
Check whether the VPS itself is overloaded
Run these checks on the VPS while the lag or slow command is occurring:
uptime
top
htop
free -h
vmstat 1
iostat
- CPU saturation: A process consuming the available CPUs can delay the SSH daemon and shell. Reduce concurrency, reschedule the workload or add capacity.
- Memory pressure and swap: Low free memory and sustained swap activity make both commands and terminal output feel frozen. Identify the largest processes and reduce their footprint or move the workload.
- Disk I/O wait: High I/O wait points to storage contention rather than network latency. Check the process generating reads or writes, its logs and the provider’s disk metrics.
- Process contention: A backup, compilation, database job or runaway process can monopolize CPU, memory or disk. Correlate process start times with the onset of lag.
- Provider or instance health: Review the VPS dashboard’s CPU, disk and network graphs and its instance-status or health indicators. A guest that is healthy from inside but has a degraded host or network path may require provider intervention or migration.
If only commands are slow while an idle shell echoes promptly, focus on the command’s application-specific logs and dependencies. If the entire shell, including simple prompts and pwd, is delayed, continue correlating resource pressure with network measurements.
Correct terminal and tmux display problems
Wrong colors, broken arrow keys, garbled characters or a screen that redraws incorrectly can look like network lag. Check the terminal type at each layer:

printf '%sn' "$TERM"
tmux display-message -p '#{client_termname}'
The outer terminal and tmux must advertise compatible values. Common valid choices include tmux-256color and screen-256color, provided the corresponding terminfo entry exists on the VPS. Do not force a value that the remote system does not support; install the needed terminfo data or select a compatible fallback.

On a slow computer, tmux’s automatic window-title renaming can consume substantial CPU, especially when prompts or commands change frequently. Disable it in tmux when profiling shows that overhead:
tmux setw -g automatic-rename off
This addresses local redraw or naming overhead, not packet loss. If characters are missing only inside tmux, compare TERM outside and inside tmux before altering SSH settings.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Record a baseline: Run
time ssh user@host trueseveral times and save the hostname/IP and IPv4/IPv6 comparisons. - Classify the delay: Decide whether it occurs before authentication, during typing, or while commands execute.
- For pre-authentication delay: Test forward and reverse DNS, compare
ssh -4andssh -6, runssh -vvv, inspect SSH logs and check authentication backends. - For interactive lag: Measure round-trip time and packet loss, inspect the route and VPS network graphs, then test Mosh after confirming UDP access and
mosh-server. - For slow commands: Watch CPU, memory, swap, I/O wait and process contention with
uptime,top/htop,free -h,vmstat 1andiostat. - For disconnect-related data loss: Run the workload in
tmuxorscreen, detach, reconnect and reattach. - For rendering errors: Verify
TERMoutside and inside tmux; disable automatic window renaming if it consumes CPU. - After every change: Re-run the same baseline and check logs. Keep a second administrative connection open before modifying the SSH daemon.
What not to conclude from old timing examples
The OpenSSH FAQ includes a historical example of an SSHv2 localhost connection completing in 0.22 seconds on an otherwise unloaded 2.1 GHz Athlon XP 2600+ system. That figure is an old illustration, not a modern VPS target, an Internet-latency promise or a guarantee for your provider. Current performance depends on geography, routing, DNS, authentication, encryption overhead and guest load. Use your own repeated baseline and the symptom-specific measurements above rather than a universal pass/fail number.
When to change the VPS or network path
If logs and measurements show a persistently saturated guest, reduce the workload, reschedule it, add CPU or memory, or move to a healthier instance. If the VPS is idle but the route has high loss or unstable latency, try a nearer region, a wired connection or a different VPN path where policy permits. Mosh is useful when UDP is allowed and the problem is interactive responsiveness, but it does not correct a broken DNS record, a blocked UDP path or an overloaded server. Escalate to the provider with timestamps, source and destination addresses, packet-loss evidence and the instance-health graphs rather than changing several unrelated settings at once.
