A Galaxy phone that appears stuck after an update may be frozen, trapped in a restart loop, paused at the Samsung logo, or unable to power on at all. The safest order is to identify the symptom, force-restart the phone, test Safe Mode if it can reach the power menu, and try Smart Switch only if a computer detects the phone and offers an update. If an update failure leaves the phone unable to boot normally, Samsung says service is required to reflash it; a factory reset is a destructive last resort, not the default fix.
First identify what “stuck” means
Different symptoms point to different next steps. Watch the phone for a full minute without repeatedly pressing buttons and classify what you see:
- Frozen display: The screen remains lit or shows one screen, but taps and buttons do nothing.
- Boot loop: The Galaxy repeatedly shows its startup animation, turns off, and starts again.
- Stuck at the Samsung logo: The logo stays on screen and the phone never reaches the lock screen.
- Update failure: An update message reports an error, or the phone returns to the same failed-update state after restarting.
- Completely unresponsive: There is no visible screen response. A depleted battery can look like a software failure.
This distinction matters because a force restart is appropriate for a freeze, Safe Mode is useful only when the phone can reach a power menu, Smart Switch requires a computer connection and an offered update, and a failed update that prevents normal boot ultimately needs Samsung service. Samsung’s menus and button behavior can vary by model, software version, carrier, and region, so use your regional support page if the on-screen labels differ.

If the phone is entirely dark, connect it to an approved charger for a while before troubleshooting. Samsung includes charging in its boot-loop guidance, but there is no reliable number of minutes that guarantees a phone will recover. Check for a charging indicator, but do not assume that the absence of an indicator proves the update is the cause; a damaged port, cable, battery, or display can produce similar symptoms.

- USB-C to C Cable for up to 25W Charging Speeds
- Get it in black or white to suit your style and device
1. Force-restart the Galaxy phone
A force restart does not erase your personal data and is the correct first action for a frozen or apparently unresponsive device.
- Press and hold the Side/Power button and Volume Down button at the same time.
- Continue holding them until the phone restarts. Samsung’s general US boot-loop instructions say to hold the buttons for more than seven seconds.
- If a power menu appears before the restart, keep holding both buttons rather than tapping an ordinary power command.
- Release the buttons when the Samsung logo or startup animation appears, then allow the phone time to complete startup.
Button placement and timing can differ on particular Galaxy models. If your phone enters Maintenance Boot Mode, use the volume buttons to highlight Normal Boot and press the Side/Power button to select it, following Samsung’s instructions for that screen.
Use the procedure from Samsung’s general boot-loop guide if you need to compare the screen or button behavior: Samsung Galaxy device will not start or is in a boot loop. If the phone restarts and reaches the lock screen, do not immediately repeat the update. First check whether the problem returns without opening apps, then continue with the diagnostic checks below.
A force restart is a recovery attempt, not proof that the update installed correctly. If the phone starts once and then returns to the logo or restarts when you unlock it, treat the problem as ongoing and continue through the next decision points rather than repeatedly cycling the buttons.
2. If it starts, check whether a downloaded app is involved
Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. It can show whether an app is contributing to crashes or repeated restarts, but it cannot repair a damaged or incomplete system update.
Enter Safe Mode from the power menu
- Turn on the screen and open the phone’s power menu. On many current Galaxy versions, swipe down to open Quick settings and tap the power icon; your model may use a different path.
- Touch and hold the Power off icon until Safe mode appears.
- Tap Safe mode and allow the phone to restart. “Safe mode” should appear near the bottom of the display.
If the phone is stable in Safe Mode, uninstall recently downloaded or updated apps one at a time. Restart normally after each removal and test for the loop or freeze. Start with apps installed or updated immediately before the software update problem, but do not remove system applications unless Samsung support directs you to do so.
If the same freeze, logo hang, or restart loop continues in Safe Mode, downloaded apps are less likely to be the cause. Exit Safe Mode by restarting normally and move to Smart Switch or service. Samsung’s frozen-screen guidance covers this diagnostic path: Galaxy phone or tablet’s screen is frozen or responds too slowly.

Safe Mode is available only if the phone can get far enough to display the power menu and complete that restart. If the screen never reaches that point, do not keep trying random Safe Mode button sequences; use the force-restart, Smart Switch, and service criteria instead.
3. Try Smart Switch only when the phone and computer meet the requirements
Smart Switch can offer a recovery update for some Galaxy devices that are stuck at the logo or repeatedly restarting. It is not a universal boot-loop repair: availability depends on the device, software support, computer connection, and whether Smart Switch presents an Update option.
Prepare the connection
- Use a Mac or Windows PC with Smart Switch installed.
- Use the supplied USB cable. If it is missing or faulty, use a compatible replacement that supports data transfer, not only charging, and matches the phone’s connector.
- Keep the computer connected to power if possible, and do not begin if the cable or USB port disconnects intermittently.
- Do not use third-party firmware downloads or unofficial flashing tools. They can create additional data and warranty risks.
Run the offered update
- Open Smart Switch on the Mac or Windows PC.
- Connect the Galaxy phone with the supplied, data-capable USB cable.
- Wait for Smart Switch to detect the device. Detection may fail if the phone is fully unresponsive, the cable carries no data, or that model and software combination is not supported.
- If Smart Switch displays an Update button, select it and follow every prompt.
- Leave the USB cable connected and do not use the phone, close Smart Switch, or put the computer to sleep while the update is running.
- Allow the phone to reboot and let the process finish before disconnecting.
Smart Switch may also help when an update repeatedly fails to download. Samsung specifically warns not to disconnect during the process because interruption can leave the device in a worse state. Its logo-screen instructions are here: Galaxy phone or tablet stuck at Samsung logo screen. For repeated download failures, see Software update failed on Samsung device.
If Smart Switch does not offer an update
Do not force an update through an unrelated download or select a firmware file for a similar-looking model. If Smart Switch detects the phone but shows no Update control, the available support path may not include recovery for that device or software combination. If it cannot detect the phone at all, a different USB port or known-good data cable can rule out a connection problem, but repeated non-detection is a reason to stop experimenting and contact Samsung. Smart Switch is useful only when its own supported workflow appears.
Keep the phone and computer still during the process. A cable that feels secure can still lose data contact if the connector is damaged or the port is loose. Never disconnect merely because the progress bar pauses; wait for Smart Switch to report completion or an error.
Choose the next step by symptom and risk
| What you observe | Can it reach a power menu? | Best next step | Personal-data risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen is frozen but lit | Usually no | Force-restart with Side/Power + Volume Down for more than seven seconds | Low; this does not intentionally erase data |
| Phone boots, but trouble may be app-related | Yes | Enter Safe Mode and remove recently downloaded apps one at a time if the fault disappears | Low; app removal affects the selected apps and their local data |
| Samsung logo remains or phone keeps restarting | Not required for Smart Switch, but the computer must detect it | Connect to Smart Switch and use Update only if that option appears | Potentially disruptive; do not interrupt the update, and no recovery outcome is guaranteed |
| Update failed and the phone cannot boot normally | No | Contact Samsung support or an authorized service channel for reflash service | Not stated; ask the service provider about data preservation |
| Nothing works and you are considering a reset | Varies | Back up first if possible; treat factory reset as a last resort | High; personal information may not be recoverable |
4. Know when home troubleshooting should stop
Samsung’s update-failure guidance is explicit: If the device fails to boot normally after an update fails, service will be required to reflash the device.
That means a phone that remains unable to start normally after the force restart and applicable Smart Switch attempt should go to Samsung support or an authorized service channel.
Service is especially appropriate when:
- Smart Switch does not detect the phone or does not offer an Update option.
- The device repeatedly returns to the logo or restart loop after Smart Switch completes or fails.
- The phone cannot reach the power menu or Safe Mode.
- The update error returns on every restart.
- The phone becomes hot, smells unusual, has liquid or impact damage, or will not charge.
Tell the technician exactly what happened: the Galaxy model, carrier and region, update date, error message, whether it reaches the Samsung logo, and which button combination or Smart Switch steps you tried. Do not assume a reflash preserves data; ask what, if anything, can be recovered before authorizing service.

Use Samsung’s official support channel or an authorized provider for the relevant country. The US troubleshooting pages may not describe every carrier, model, or regional software build, and service options can differ by location. Avoid third-party “unlock,” firmware, or remote-flashing offers that ask you to disable security protections or send payment before diagnosing the phone.
5. Treat factory reset as a destructive last resort
A factory reset removes accounts, apps, settings, photos stored only on the phone, messages, and other personal information. Samsung cautions that personal information may not be recoverable, so save anything you can before using it.
Do not use a reset as the first response to a frozen screen, and do not treat it as a substitute for Samsung’s documented reflash service when an update failure leaves the phone unable to boot normally. A reset is worth considering only when:
- The phone can reach the appropriate recovery or settings menu reliably.
- Non-destructive steps have failed.
- You have confirmed that important data is backed up or accepted that it may be lost.
- Samsung support recommends it for your particular model and situation.
Because recovery-menu labels and button combinations vary, follow the instructions for your exact Galaxy model and regional software rather than applying a generic key sequence from an unrelated device. If the phone is still accessible, check cloud synchronization and computer backups before erasing it. Pay particular attention to locally stored photos, notes, messages, authenticator codes, and files that may not have synchronized.
Common mistakes that make an update failure worse
Disconnecting Smart Switch during the update
A progress bar can pause while files are transferred or verified. Disconnecting the cable, closing the program, or powering off the computer can interrupt the process. Leave the connection intact until Smart Switch says the update is complete and the phone has rebooted.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

An update can require more than one restart. After a force restart, give the phone a reasonable opportunity to complete startup instead of repeatedly holding the buttons every few seconds. If it settles at the logo indefinitely or loops, return to the Smart Switch and service decision points.
Installing unofficial firmware
Unofficial firmware and flashing instructions are not a safe substitute for Samsung’s support process. They can install the wrong software for the model or region, erase data, and complicate later service.

Assuming a cable that charges also transfers data
Some cables provide power without a usable data connection. Smart Switch needs a data-capable cable and a functioning USB port. Try the supplied cable first; replace it only with a connector-compatible cable explicitly rated for data transfer.
Resetting before checking backups
A reset can remove the only local copy of photos, notes, messages, or authenticator data. Check cloud synchronization and computer backups while the phone is still accessible, and ask Samsung service about recovery before erasing it.
Assuming every Galaxy uses the same buttons
Samsung notes that button layouts, menu names, and software options vary. A key combination shown for one generation may open a different screen on another. If the display differs from the instructions, stop and look up the exact model on Samsung’s regional support site instead of trying repeated combinations.
What to record before contacting Samsung
Good details shorten the support process and help determine whether the problem is software-only or hardware-related. Record:
- The exact Galaxy model name and model number, if visible on the box, account, or SIM tray area.
- Android and One UI versions, if the phone can display them.
- The update notification, error text, or approximate date and time the failure began.
- Whether the phone freezes, loops, stays on the Samsung logo, or remains completely dark.
- Whether it can display the power menu, enter Safe Mode, or appear in Smart Switch.
- The charger and cable used, and whether the phone shows a charging indicator.
- Any recent drop, liquid exposure, overheating, or repair.
Use Samsung’s regional support site because the US pages cited here may not match every carrier, model, or country. Samsung notes that button layouts, menu names, and software options can differ by version.

My Galaxy is stuck on the Samsung logo. Should I reset it immediately?
No. First try the force restart. If the phone still remains at the logo, connect it to Smart Switch on a Mac or Windows PC and use Update only if Smart Switch detects the device and presents that option. A factory reset is destructive and is not a substitute for Samsung’s reflash service when an update failure prevents normal boot.
Can Safe Mode repair a failed software update?
No. Safe Mode disables downloaded apps so you can test whether a recently installed app is causing crashes or restarts. If the phone is stable there, remove recent apps one at a time. If the same problem persists in Safe Mode, move to Smart Switch or Samsung service.
Why does Smart Switch not see my Galaxy phone?
The phone may be fully unresponsive, the USB cable may support charging but not data, the USB port may be faulty, or that device and software combination may not be supported. Try the supplied or another known-good data cable and a reliable port once. If Smart Switch still does not detect the phone, do not install unofficial firmware; contact Samsung.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is there a guaranteed waiting time after an update?
No. Samsung does not provide a universal number of minutes that guarantees recovery. An update may restart more than once, so avoid repeatedly interrupting a normal first boot. If the phone remains indefinitely at the logo or repeatedly loops, use the Smart Switch and service criteria instead of waiting without a plan.
What happens if an update fails and the phone will not boot normally?
Samsung’s update-failure guidance states that service will be required to reflash the device. Contact Samsung support or an authorized service channel, and ask what data-preservation options exist. Do not assume a reflash will keep personal information.
Should I buy a special cable or repair kit?
The relevant hardware requirement is a USB cable that matches the phone’s connector and supports data transfer. Try the supplied cable first and replace it only if missing or faulty. A charger, generic repair kit, or third-party flashing tool is not a documented fix for an update failure.
The Bottom Line
Start with the low-risk force restart, then use Safe Mode only to investigate downloaded apps. For a logo hang or restart loop, Smart Switch is worth trying only when it detects the phone and offers Update; never disconnect it during the process. If a failed update leaves the Galaxy unable to boot normally, Samsung says reflash service is required. Keep factory reset as the final, data-destructive option.
