A monitor arm that slowly sinks, rises, tilts forward, or wanders sideways usually needs diagnosis rather than random tightening. First identify which movement is wrong, confirm the display and mount are within their published limits, then make the smallest model-specific adjustment while supporting the monitor. A gas-spring adjustment can correct vertical height; it cannot fix every loose tilt joint, clamp, or damaged fastener.

Use the arm’s current manual and supplied tool before turning any screw. Adjustment locations, Allen-key sizes, thread direction, and the meaning of “+” and “−” markings vary by model. If the arm remains unstable after a careful adjustment, stop and ask the manufacturer whether the spring, joint, or complete arm is serviceable.

Identify what is actually drifting

“Sagging” describes several different faults. Treating them as one problem can make a correctly balanced arm worse. Watch the monitor for a few seconds with your hands off it and classify the movement before adjusting anything.

Observed symptom Most likely area to inspect first Do not adjust first
The entire screen and arm slowly move downward Vertical gas-spring balance, display weight, installation, or a loose mount The tilt joint
The arm rises by itself Vertical spring tension is too high for the installed load Desk clamp or grommet, unless it is visibly moving
Height stays fixed but the screen face tips downward Monitor-to-VESA tilt joint or its friction setting The gas-spring tension screw
The screen or arm wanders left or right Rotation joint, set screw, fastener, or desk attachment Vertical spring balance
The whole arm shakes when touched Clamp or grommet attachment, connectors, fasteners, desk stiffness, or an overloaded arm Forcing a joint beyond its manual

Take a photograph of the arm’s current position before changing anything. It gives you a reference if you need to return to the starting setting or describe the problem to support.

  • Full Adjustable: This PC monitor stand can remain completely stable at any angle without any extra work. Compared with other single monitor arm adjustment methods, huanuo can make you adjust screws repeatedly, this monitor arm is easy to use and has a tilt range from -50°to +85°, ±90 ° swivel, and 360°rotation, so your screen can be lifted up to 39.6cm from desktop with one hand.
  • 80% Sturdier Than Others: At HUANUO, we focus on improving the strength and stability of our single monitor stand. The single desk monitor mount uses automotive-grade components and has undergone 20,000 motion tests, which means it can be used continuously for more than 5 years without issue.
  • Installed In 3 Minutes: The 1-piece design monitor arm simplifies the installation, so all necessary hardware is included; The setup can be completed in 3 minutes. Step 1: Affix the bracket to your table; Step 2: Attach your monitor to the VESA plate; Step 3: Adjust tension according to your monitor weight.
  • Two mounting options : You may choose to use either a C-clamp or grommet mount. For best results, make sure your table meets the following criteria: wood tabletop is recommended; the underside of the tabletop should ideally be free of any beams or panels that may interfere with the installation; the tabletop thickness and grommet mounting can support 0.59"-3.54”.

Make the setup safe before touching an adjustment

A monitor can swing or drop when a spring is out of balance. Keep one hand under the display or have another person support it while you work. Do not adjust an unattended screen at the end of a long extension.

Check the display and VESA connection

  • Confirm that the monitor is firmly attached to the VESA plate and that the plate is fully locked or seated according to the manual.
  • Check every accessible mounting screw for looseness, but do not substitute a different screw length or force a stripped head.
  • Verify the actual display weight, including any attached accessories that the arm must carry, is within the arm’s published load range. Fellowes specifically advises checking that the arm supports the screen’s size and weight; its installation guidance is at Fellowes’ monitor-arm installation and adjustment guidance.
  • Check that the monitor’s VESA pattern matches the plate and that no adapter or cable is pulling the display downward.

Check the desk attachment

  • For a clamp, make sure the clamp is square to the desk and its contact surfaces are tight without crushing or damaging the desktop.
  • For a grommet mount, verify that the through-bolt, backing plate, and nut are seated as the manual shows.
  • Look for a cracked clamp, bent plate, split desktop, or attachment that moves when you gently steady the arm. A damaged attachment is a stop-and-contact-support condition, not a spring-tension problem.

Use the correct tool

Many arms include an Allen key stored in the base or hardware bag. Use that tool first. A “metric Allen key set” is not universally interchangeable: the correct size and access angle differ by arm, and an ill-fitting key can round the adjustment socket. Do not assume that clockwise always means more tension. Use the markings and instructions for the exact model.

Fix a screen that sinks or rises vertically

Gas-spring arms are balanced for a particular load. If the display sinks, the spring is providing too little upward force for the installed load or the arm is outside its intended range. If the display rises, the spring is providing too much upward force. Most arms address this with a tension adjustment, but the screw position and rotation direction are product-specific.

1. Put the arm in the position specified by its manual

Some manuals direct you to support the monitor in a horizontal or middle position before turning the adjustment. Follow that instruction exactly. If the manual does not specify a position, keep the screen supported and avoid reaching through the arm’s moving joints.

With straightforward instructions, you can set up your monitor arm effortlessly, making it a hassle-free addition to your desk. We only recommend installing it on a wooden desk, preferably with no crossbeam blocking the underside.

2. Find the spring-balance adjustment

Look for an adjustment bolt or screw on the arm section that controls vertical movement. Do not confuse it with a small screw on the VESA tilt or rotation joint. The ARCTIC X1-3D user manual, for example, treats gas-spring strength separately from tilt and rotation adjustments.

3. Turn in the marked direction, in small increments

If the screen sinks, use the direction marked “+” for more support. If it rises, use the direction marked “−” for less support. SIIG’s support guidance describes increasing tension with the included Allen key until the monitor stays at the desired height, but that instruction applies to the relevant SIIG design rather than every arm; see its Knowledge Base and Troubleshooting page.

Make a small turn, hold the monitor, and test the height before making another turn. Several small corrections are safer and more informative than one large rotation. If the arm reaches the end of its adjustment range while the screen still moves, do not keep forcing the screw.

4. Recheck through the arm’s normal travel

Test the screen at the height and reach you actually use, then move it carefully through its intended range. A position that appears balanced at one point can reveal an overloaded display, cable drag, or a loose joint elsewhere. Keep cables from pulling on the screen as you test.

When vertical adjustment is not the answer

If the entire arm stays at the correct height but only the screen’s top edge falls toward you, the vertical spring may already be balanced. Adjusting it can create a new height problem without correcting the angle. Move to the tilt-joint procedure instead.

Fix a screen that tilts downward

The joint between the VESA plate and the monitor controls viewing angle. Its friction or locking screw is separate from the gas spring on many designs. Support the display’s weight while inspecting or adjusting this joint.

Inspect the VESA plate and tilt hardware

  • Confirm the plate is fully engaged and its retaining screw or latch is in the position shown in the manual.
  • Check whether the tilt-joint screw has loosened. Use only the supplied tool or the exact size specified for your model.
  • Keep the screen supported while tightening. A loose tilt joint can let the display rotate suddenly when friction is released.

HUANUO’s support material discusses separate checks for arm movement and joints; consult its official FAQ for the matching product family. The ARCTIC X1-3D manual likewise separates tilt and rotation adjustment from gas-spring strength. Do not copy a torque value, screw location, or turn count from a different model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the angle after each small correction

Set the monitor to the viewing angle you need, release it slowly, and watch whether it holds. If the joint will not hold even when its adjustment is correctly set, inspect for a missing washer, damaged thread, cracked housing, or a load beyond the joint’s design. Those conditions require the maker’s advice rather than improvised shims or excessive force.

Fix sideways drift, rotation, or wobble

Sideways movement is not corrected by the vertical spring screw. It can come from a rotation joint, an arm-section connector, a set screw, the desk attachment, or a display that is not seated squarely.

Inspect joints and set screws

With the monitor supported, look for visible set screws or friction controls at the joints that rotate the arm or screen. HUANUO recommends checking set screws and joints for the type of drift described in its support material. Tighten only the control identified for your model, using small increments. A joint that binds, grinds, or has a visibly damaged thread should not be forced.

Check the base while the arm is loaded

Ask another person to hold the display steady while you watch the clamp or grommet. If the base shifts on the desk, correct the attachment according to the installation instructions. If the desk itself flexes or is cracked, a tighter screw will not create a safe foundation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate normal movement from a fault

Many arms are designed to move freely when you reposition them. The problem is uncontrolled movement after you release the screen. Test with cables connected, because a stiff cable bundle can pull the monitor sideways or twist the arm at one reach but not another.

Use a model-specific troubleshooting path

Official instructions differ enough that a generic “turn clockwise” recipe is unsafe. Use the following order with the manual for your exact model.

  1. Record the model name and inspect the manual or support page for “droops,” “not staying in position,” “lowers,” “rises,” “tension,” “tilt,” or “rotation.”
  2. Match the symptom to the control: vertical height to gas-spring balance, screen angle to tilt friction, and sideways movement to rotation or attachment hardware.
  3. Confirm the display weight, screen size, VESA pattern, and desk mount meet the arm’s published limits.
  4. Support the monitor and use the supplied Allen key or specified tool.
  5. Make one small adjustment in the direction marked by the manufacturer.
  6. Release the monitor gradually, observe the result, and repeat only if the manual permits further adjustment.
  7. Stop if the screw strips, the arm becomes unstable, the attachment moves, or the adjustment reaches its limit.

ACT’s AC8310 support article, updated February 26, 2026, addresses a monitor that lowers or rises after installation and provides model-specific guidance at ACT support. Its procedure should not be treated as a universal instruction for other arms.

What to do when adjustment does not solve it

Recheck the basic causes once

Before declaring the arm defective, repeat the load and attachment checks with the monitor in its normal configuration. Include a webcam, light, laptop tray, or other accessory attached to the arm. Confirm that the VESA plate is locked and that no cable is applying a constant force. If the display is outside the published range, tension adjustment cannot make the installation compliant.

Contact the manufacturer before replacing parts

SIIG advises contacting its support team if the arm continues to droop after tension has been increased. Ask the maker whether the spring, tilt cartridge, joint, or complete arm is serviceable and whether replacement parts are approved for your model. A gas spring can be a specialized component under load; do not assume the owner can safely remove or replace it.

Stop immediately for these conditions

  • A cracked arm, clamp, VESA plate, desk, or joint housing.
  • A stripped adjustment socket or screw that no longer turns normally.
  • A mount that pulls away from the desk or cannot be tightened securely.
  • An arm that drops, swings, or rises sharply instead of moving under control.
  • Persistent instability after the correct adjustment and load checks.

Support can tell you whether the product should be returned, repaired, or replaced. Keep the model number, purchase information, photographs of the mount, and a description of the symptom ready.

When replacement is the sensible option

Replacement is reasonable when the arm is outside its load range, the desk attachment is damaged, a joint is worn or cracked, or the manufacturer confirms that the spring assembly is not user-serviceable. Choose by measured requirements, not by appearance.

Requirement What to verify before buying
Display load The monitor and every attached accessory fall within the new arm’s published weight range.
VESA compatibility The monitor’s hole pattern and screw specification match the supplied plate or an approved adapter.
Desk attachment The clamp opening or grommet dimensions suit the desk thickness and construction.
Movement style The arm offers the height, reach, tilt, and rotation controls you actually need.
Adjustment method The tension controls are accessible with the supplied tool and clearly documented.
Support and service The maker provides a current manual, troubleshooting route, and information about replacement parts or warranty service.

No single replacement specification fits every sagging arm. Match the actual display and desk, and preserve the installation and adjustment documentation.

Prevent a new arm from drifting

  • Install the clamp or grommet on a sound, suitable desk and recheck it after the initial setup.
  • Keep the monitor within the stated load and size limits, including accessories.
  • Route cables with enough slack that moving the arm does not pull the display sideways or downward.
  • Do not hang headphones, bags, or other loads from the arm unless the manufacturer explicitly allows them.
  • Use the arm’s normal range rather than forcing it against a stop.
  • Keep the manual and supplied Allen key where they can be found; future adjustment is model-specific.
  • Inspect the mount after relocating the desk, changing the monitor, or adding an accessory.

Quick decision checklist

  1. Sinks: verify load and mount, then increase gas-spring support gradually in the manual’s “+” direction.
  2. Rises: verify the display is not too light for the arm, then reduce spring support in the marked “−” direction.
  3. Tilts down: leave spring tension alone and inspect the VESA tilt joint.
  4. Drifts sideways: inspect rotation joints, set screws, cables, and the desk attachment.
  5. Still unstable: stop, document the condition, and contact the manufacturer.
