If a PULSE Elite headset update fails or appears stuck, try the other official update route: update through a PS5, or use PlayStation’s PS Link PC Driver on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC. Before trying again, make sure the device is available to the console or PC and the connection is working. PlayStation’s support pages do not describe a special recovery procedure for firmware that has frozen mid-installation, so don’t disconnect the device or force-restart it during an update in hopes of recovery.

The right next step depends on where you started. A PS5 handles headset and adapter updates through its system-software and accessory settings; a Windows PC uses the PS Link PC Driver and a USB cable. The routes have different requirements, and PlayStation does not publish a speed or success-rate comparison. This guide sticks to the documented checks and separates ordinary connection troubleshooting from any claimed firmware recovery method.

Choose an update route

PlayStation documents two ways to update the PULSE Elite headset and its PlayStation Link (PS Link) USB adapter. A PS5 receives device updates alongside system software updates and also has a menu for checking PS Link device software. A Windows PC can update the headset and adapter through the PS Link PC Driver.

Route Requirements What to do
PS5 A PS5 with current system software; the headset or PS Link adapter must be available to the console. Check Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update and follow any on-screen prompt. PlayStation Support (US) and PlayStation Support (India)
Windows PC Windows 10 or Windows 11, internet access, the PS Link PC Driver, and a USB cable for updating devices. Use the driver to check for and install available updates. If both the adapter and headset need updates, update the adapter first. PlayStation Support (Singapore)

PlayStation does not publish comparative update speeds or success rates for these routes. If one route does not work, the documented alternative is to try the other.

Choose the PS5 route if you have the console available and can open its accessory settings. Choose the PC route if you have a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer with internet access and can use a USB cable as directed by the driver. The PC method is the documented alternative when a PS5 prompt is unavailable or unsuccessful; it is not a guarantee that a device in the middle of a failed installation can be recovered.

Before beginning either route, identify which device you are trying to update: the headset, the PS Link USB adapter, or both. The adapter and headset are separate update targets, and the PC instructions specifically say to install the adapter update first when updates are available for both. Make sure the relevant device is available to the host you plan to use. If the console or driver cannot see it, address that connection or visibility problem before interpreting the absence of an update prompt as a firmware result.

Update the headset from a PS5

  1. Connect the PS Link adapter or headset to the PS5 as appropriate, and confirm the console can see the device.
  2. Install the latest available PS5 system software. PlayStation says headset and PS Link adapter updates are added with PS5 system software updates.
  3. On the console, open Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update.
  4. If the PS5 presents an update prompt, follow the on-screen instructions and allow the process to finish.

If no update prompt appears, the console may not have an update available for the connected device. The support instructions do not provide a way to force a specific firmware version. If the update fails, check the connection and consider the Windows PC route below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are two parts to checking from a PS5: keep the console system software current, then look in the PS Link device-software area. The accessory menu is the place to check whether the console offers an update for the connected device; it does not mean there will always be a prompt. If the menu offers no update, the cited PlayStation instructions do not describe a manual version selector or a way to make the console install a particular firmware version on demand.

If you began an update and it did not complete, do not assume that reopening the menu, interrupting power, unplugging the adapter, or pressing an arbitrary button combination will recover it. The reviewed support guidance provides the normal update route, not a mid-install recovery sequence. If the console can still see the device and the issue is that no update is offered, the Windows route is a reasonable alternate official path. If the device is no longer available or remains unusable, skip improvised recovery attempts and ask PlayStation Support for device-specific advice.

Update from a Windows PC

The PS Link PC Driver supports firmware updates for the PULSE Elite headset and its USB adapter on Windows 10 and Windows 11. The PC must have internet access, and PlayStation lists a USB cable for updating devices. Its instructions do not specify a connector type, so use the cable and connection arrangement directed by the driver rather than assuming a particular connector is required.

  1. On a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC with internet access, install or open PlayStation’s PS Link PC Driver.
  2. Connect the device you want to update to the PC using a USB cable, following the driver’s on-screen instructions.
  3. Check the driver for available device firmware updates and follow its prompts to install them.
  4. If updates are available for both the PS Link adapter and the headset, install the adapter update first, then update the headset.

The requirements matter: the PC method is documented for Windows 10 or Windows 11, requires internet access, and uses the PS Link PC Driver. It is not described as a phone, tablet, or Mac update method. PlayStation also lists a USB cable for updating devices. The cited instructions do not specify a connector type, so do not treat a particular connector as a research-backed requirement, and do not assume that buying a new cable is necessary if you already have a suitable one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When both items need attention, follow the documented order instead of starting with the headset: update the USB adapter first, then the headset. If only one device has an available update, follow the driver’s prompt for that device. The instructions do not report comparative speeds between PC and PS5 or say that one route has a higher chance of success. The practical comparison is simply that the PS5 route uses the console’s system software and accessory menu, while the PC route needs the driver, an internet connection, and a USB cable.

If the driver’s quick menu does not appear, PlayStation recommends removing and reinserting the USB adapter, rebooting the PC, and checking again. These steps address the missing driver menu; they are not a documented recovery method for a firmware installation already frozen in progress.

Keep that distinction in mind when deciding whether to use the PC troubleshooting steps. A missing quick menu is a driver or adapter-visibility problem for which PlayStation lists those checks. A firmware progress display that has stopped is a different situation. The driver guidance supplied here does not say to repeatedly disconnect a device during installation or reboot the computer as a way to complete a frozen update. If the update has already started and appears unresponsive, avoid treating the quick-menu steps as permission to interrupt it; consult PlayStation Support if it remains stuck.

Try a supported headset reset if the device is malfunctioning

A reset may help if the headset itself is not working properly. It is a general troubleshooting step, not a special fix for an update frozen during installation.

This is the less disruptive of the two headset button procedures described in the support material. Its documented purpose is to reset the headset when it is not working properly. Since PlayStation says the reset does not affect PS Link or Bluetooth pairings or audio settings, it is distinct from wiping connections. Still, the wording matters: the reset guidance does not promise to repair firmware that froze partway through installation. Use it for a malfunctioning headset when appropriate, not as a substitute for a firmware recovery procedure that PlayStation has not documented.

If the device is functioning well enough to be seen by the console or PC but an update is unavailable, the reset is not a way to force an update. Return to the relevant update route and check for an on-screen offer. If the device is malfunctioning, carry out the reset as described and then check whether it is available to the intended host. Should the update remain stuck or the headset remain unusable, contact official support rather than escalating to an undocumented button sequence.

Check the connection before another attempt

Connection checks can help if the console or PC cannot see the headset or adapter. PlayStation’s suggestions concern PS Link connectivity; they do not establish that wireless interference causes a firmware update to freeze or that changing the connection will recover an installation already stuck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ensure the relevant system or device software is current.
  • Check that objects are not blocking the PS Link connection.
  • If using a PS5, try a front USB port for the adapter.
  • Reduce interference from nearby wireless routers where practical.

PlayStation’s Norway connection guidance refers to software version 2.0 or newer as general connection guidance. That is a version threshold, not a reported failure rate or a guarantee that an update will complete. See PlayStation’s PS Link connection troubleshooting.

Apply these suggestions to the symptom they address. If the PS5 or PC does not recognize the adapter or the PS Link connection is unreliable, check that the relevant software is current and that nothing is obstructing the connection. On a PS5, PlayStation specifically suggests trying a front USB port for the adapter. If a wireless router is nearby, reducing its interference is another general connection suggestion. These are ordinary checks before another attempt, not proof that the update process itself was interrupted by a router or blocked signal.

The version 2.0-or-newer reference in the Norway guidance is easy to misread. It is a software-version threshold in general PS Link connection advice, not a statistic about failed updates, an estimate of how common the problem is, or a promise that an update will finish once that version is installed. PlayStation has not published a failure-frequency figure in the cited pages. Avoid drawing conclusions about prevalence or success odds from this version note.

Use the connection wipe only as a later troubleshooting step

If the headset has connection problems that persist after a reset, PlayStation documents a more disruptive option: wiping paired connections. This is not an update-specific remedy. It removes PS Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings, so use it only if you are prepared to pair devices and restore settings afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Hold the PS Link button until the status light quickly blinks blue.
  2. Repeat the hold as described in PlayStation’s instructions. A successful wipe is indicated by a brief red blink.

Follow the full instructions on PlayStation’s accessories support page. Do not use this wipe as a substitute for a documented firmware recovery process.

The pairing wipe should not be confused with the 10-second reset. PlayStation says the reset preserves pairings and audio settings; the separate wipe removes PS Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings. That makes the wipe a later, more disruptive connection-troubleshooting option, not a routine first step when an update prompt is missing or an installation appears stuck. Before using it, consider whether you are willing to set up the connections and audio settings again.

Follow the detailed official button instructions rather than guessing at timing. The available guidance describes a hold until the status light quickly blinks blue, then repeating the hold; a successful wipe is indicated by a brief red blink. It does not present this as a firmware downgrade, reinstall, or repair method. If the problem is specifically an update frozen mid-installation, the connection wipe is not evidence-based recovery and should not be used for that purpose.

If the update remains stuck

The official support pages reviewed do not document a special recovery procedure for a PULSE Elite update that freezes mid-installation. They also do not recommend repeated forced restarts, disconnecting the device during installation, a factory reset, or a particular button sequence to recover such an update. Avoid treating those actions as proven fixes. For a device that remains stuck or unusable, contact PlayStation Support for guidance specific to the console, driver, and device state.

When you contact support, be clear about which route you used, whether the target was the headset or the USB adapter, whether the update began or simply was not offered, and whether the console or driver can still see the device. Those details distinguish a missing update prompt from an update that started and stopped, or a general connection failure. This is practical context to share, not a promise that any particular symptom has a known fix.

In short, use the PS5 device-software menu or the Windows PC Driver as documented, follow the adapter-first order on PC when both devices have updates, and use connection checks only for connection problems. A headset reset is a supported general troubleshooting step, while the connection wipe removes pairings and settings. For a frozen installation, the safest evidence-based answer is not to improvise a recovery sequence: PlayStation’s reviewed pages do not specify one, so escalate to official support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my PULSE Elite update stuck?

The cited PlayStation support pages do not identify a specific cause or publish a failure rate for stuck PULSE Elite updates. First distinguish a missing update prompt from a connection problem or an installation that has already frozen. Check the documented PS5 or Windows PC route and connection guidance, but do not assume wireless interference is the cause of a frozen installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I update a PULSE Elite headset?

On PS5, install current PS5 system software, then check Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update and follow any prompt. On Windows 10 or 11, use the PlayStation Link PC Driver with internet access and a USB cable as directed. If both the adapter and headset have updates available on PC, update the adapter first.

Can I update the PULSE Elite without a PS5?

Yes. PlayStation’s PS Link PC Driver supports firmware updates for the PULSE Elite headset and its USB adapter on Windows 10 and Windows 11. The PC needs internet access, and PlayStation lists a USB cable for device updates.

Will resetting the headset erase its pairings or audio settings?

PlayStation says the 10-second headset reset does not affect PS Link or Bluetooth pairings or audio settings. The separate connection wipe is more disruptive: it removes those pairings and settings.

Can I force-restart or disconnect the headset to recover a frozen update?

The reviewed PlayStation pages do not document those actions as a recovery method for an update frozen mid-installation. Avoid treating forced restarts, disconnecting during installation, a factory reset, or an improvised button sequence as proven fixes; contact PlayStation Support if the device remains stuck or unusable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the PS Link PC Driver quick menu does not appear?

PlayStation recommends removing and reinserting the USB adapter, rebooting the PC, and checking again. Those steps are for a missing driver quick menu, not a documented way to recover an update that has frozen after starting.

The Bottom Line

Try the documented PS5 update menu or, without a PS5, the Windows 10/11 PS Link PC Driver. On PC, update the adapter before the headset if both have updates pending. Use the 10-second reset only as general headset troubleshooting, and reserve the connection wipe for persistent pairing problems because it removes pairings and audio settings. PlayStation does not document a special fix for a frozen installation; do not improvise an interruption or reset as firmware recovery, and contact PlayStation Support if it remains stuck.
