Start with the power indicator, because the light tells you whether the PS5 is sleeping, off, frozen during startup, or running without producing a picture. Solid orange means Rest Mode; no light means the console is off; blinking white or blue that never becomes solid white indicates an error or frozen state. Wake a sleeping console with the PS button on a USB-connected or previously paired controller, or press the console’s power button. If the indicator shows an error, use Sony’s timed power-cycle and Safe Mode procedures in the order below.
Do not unplug the AC cord while the indicator is lit or blinking. Wait for the light to go out before disconnecting power. Sony warns that cutting power during an active state can cause data loss, corruption, or console damage.
Read the PS5 power indicator first
The symptom “won’t turn on” covers several different conditions. Check the light on the console before pressing buttons repeatedly or pulling the cable. The correct next step depends on what the indicator is doing.

| Solid orange | Rest Mode, a low-power state that can charge controllers and download or install content. | Press the PS button on a controller connected by USB or on a controller that was previously paired wirelessly. You can also press the console’s power button. |
| No light | The console is powered off. | Press the PS button on a paired controller, or press the console’s power button. If there is still no response, continue with the external power checks. |
| Blue that does not become solid white, or blinking white | Sony classifies this as a console error or frozen state. | Follow the three-minute AC power-cycle procedure, then try Safe Mode if the same state returns. |
| Solid white but no picture | The PS5 is powered on, but the display path may be failing or the console may be running without an image. | Treat this as a display or repair problem rather than a no-power problem. Check the HDMI path and use Sony’s display troubleshooting or PlayStation Repairs flow. |
Sony’s indicator guide describes Rest Mode as “a low-power state in which your console can charge controllers, download and install content.” A steady orange light therefore is not a failed startup; it is the expected color for sleep mode.

Make safe external checks before restarting
Verify the controller wake method
A wireless controller can wake the PS5 only if it was already paired with that console. For a controller that has not been paired, connect it to the PS5 with a USB cable and press the PS button. If the controller itself is uncharged, leave it connected while trying the wake command. The console’s physical power button remains an independent way to start it, so test that button if the controller produces no response.
Check the AC connection and wall outlet
Push the AC cable firmly into the PS5 and the wall outlet. Inspect both ends for a loose fit or visible damage. Test the outlet with another ordinary appliance or use a different known-good outlet. Change one thing at a time—outlet, cable, then controller—so you can tell which change affects the symptom.
Sony’s Safe Mode troubleshooting also advises trying another USB, HDMI, or power cable when Safe Mode will not launch. A replacement AC cable is a diagnostic item, not a guaranteed repair. Confirm the exact PS5 model’s connector and your region’s electrical requirements before buying one; the support guidance does not specify a universal cable model.
Disconnect power only when the console is fully off
If the indicator is orange, white, blue, or blinking, do not pull the AC plug. Wait until the indicator is completely extinguished. Sony’s PS5 Quick Start Guide for the CFI-71XX family states: “Disconnect the AC power cord from the electricity supply only when the power indicator is off.” This protects data being written to storage and avoids the possibility of hardware damage.
Use the restart procedure that matches the symptom
When the light is orange (Rest Mode)
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable, or use a controller that was previously paired.
- Press the PS button once and wait for the indicator to change.
- If the controller does not wake the console, press the PS5’s power button once.
- If the indicator remains orange and there is no response, allow the light to go out before disconnecting AC power, then perform the external checks above.
Do not treat Rest Mode as a full shutdown. Downloads, installations, and controller charging can continue in this state, so interrupting power while the orange light is on carries the same data-risk warning as interrupting an active session.

When there is no light
- Press the PS button on a paired controller.
- If nothing happens, connect the controller to the console by USB and press the PS button again.
- Press the physical power button on the console.
- Check the outlet and AC connection without disconnecting a console that has a light showing.
If the console stays completely dark after those checks, do not infer a failed internal component from that symptom alone. A no-power condition that survives the safe checks belongs in Sony’s repair diagnostic flow.
When the indicator blinks white or remains blue
Sony’s published first step for a blinking-white indicator or a blue light that never transitions to solid white is a three-minute power cycle:
- Wait until the console is no longer actively indicating power. If it is stuck with a light, use the normal shutdown control first rather than pulling the cable immediately.
- Disconnect the AC cable from the electricity supply.
- Leave the console unplugged for three minutes.
- Reconnect the AC cable and press the power button.
If the same blue or blinking-white condition returns, Sony directs you to reinstall the system software through Safe Mode. Reinstallation is not a harmless reset: it removes console data, so use non-erasing Safe Mode options and make a backup whenever the console can still start before choosing it.
When the light is solid white but the screen is blank
A solid white indicator means the PS5 is powered on even if the television shows no image. Check that the HDMI cable is firmly seated at both ends, select the television input connected to the PS5, and try another HDMI cable if one is available. If Safe Mode may be running but nothing appears on screen, HDMI troubleshooting is particularly relevant. Sony routes persistent blank-screen cases to its display support and PlayStation Repairs tools rather than the no-power sequence.
When Safe Mode itself will not launch
Do not confuse this procedure with the three-minute cycle for a stuck blue or white indicator. Sony gives Safe Mode access its own 20-minute power removal step:

- Hold the PS5 power button until the console beeps and shuts down.
- Remove the power cable.
- Wait 20 minutes.
- Reconnect the cable and try entering Safe Mode again.
While diagnosing Safe Mode access, test another USB cable for the controller and, if the screen is blank, another HDMI cable. Sony also lists trying another power cable. If Safe Mode still will not appear after the 20-minute procedure and cable checks, stop repeating power cycles and use the repair diagnostic route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEnter PS5 Safe Mode correctly
Safe Mode is useful when the console can reach its startup firmware but has storage, display, or system-software trouble. It is not a way to force a completely unresponsive console to power on.
- Turn the PS5 off. If it is running, hold the power button for about three seconds until it shuts down.
- With the console off, press and hold the power button again.
- Keep holding until you hear the second beep. Sony says the second beep sounds about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable. Wireless pairing is not available at this stage.
- Press the controller’s PS button and read the Safe Mode menu on the display.
If the menu does not appear, the console may still be entering Safe Mode while the display path fails. That is why Sony includes HDMI substitution in its Safe Mode troubleshooting.
Choose a Safe Mode option without losing data unnecessarily
Read each option’s warning before confirming it. Safe Mode contains both maintenance tools and destructive reset commands.
| Option or action | Data impact | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Repair Console Storage | Does not erase user data. | Use for suspected storage-startup trouble when the console reaches Safe Mode but does not boot normally. |
| Options that change video output | Designed to alter display settings rather than erase the console. | Useful when the PS5 appears to run but the television receives no usable image. |
| Options that update system software | Follow the on-screen warning and keep the console connected to power during the update. | Use when startup software needs an update and the console can access the update path. |
| Reset PS5 | Deletes user data from the console. | Use only after backups and less-destructive repairs have been tried, or when you deliberately want a factory reset. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Deletes user data and removes the installed system software before reinstalling it. | Use for a software installation failure when Sony’s official reinstallation instructions apply. |
Repair Console Storage is the appropriate first Safe Mode choice for many startup-storage symptoms because Sony identifies it as non-erasing. Reset commands are materially different: games, saves, settings, and other local data can be removed. Back up data whenever the console will still start, and do not select a reset merely because the title symptom says “won’t turn on.”

Reinstall system software from a USB drive
If Sony’s indicator procedure leads to a system-software reinstallation, use Sony’s official files and instructions only. The manual USB method requires a drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT and a specific folder structure:
- Prepare a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- At the root of the drive, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside it, create a folder named
UPDATE, using the exact spelling and capitalization. - Place Sony’s specifically labeled system-software reinstallation file in the
PS5/UPDATEfolder. - Connect the drive to the PS5, enter Safe Mode, and select the reinstall-system-software command.
The reinstallation file is not interchangeable with an ordinary update file. Follow Sony’s current download page and on-screen prompts for the correct package. Reinstalling deletes console data, and interrupting the installation can leave the system unable to start, so keep the console connected to stable power and do not remove the USB drive until the process finishes.
Know when the problem needs PlayStation Repairs
Use Sony’s PlayStation Repairs diagnostic tool when the PS5 still gives no response after the controller, outlet, cable, and appropriate power-cycle checks; when it powers off immediately; or when Safe Mode cannot be reached after the 20-minute procedure. The tool can check whether the console qualifies for repair under warranty. Availability, shipping arrangements, and warranty terms vary by region, so follow the local PlayStation support page for your country.
Do not diagnose a failed power supply, motherboard, or other internal component solely from “won’t turn on.” The cited Sony guidance does not establish a universal internal failure, a standard repair price, or a safe do-it-yourself teardown. Opening the console can create additional damage and may affect warranty service; use the manufacturer’s diagnostic route instead.

Prepare useful information before contacting support
Support can work faster when you record what happened rather than reporting only that the console is dead. Note:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- The exact indicator behavior: orange, no light, blinking white, persistent blue, or solid white with no image.
- Whether the console responds to its physical power button, a paired controller, or a USB-connected controller.
- Whether you heard one beep, two beeps, or no beep when holding the power button.
- Whether Safe Mode appeared and which option, if any, changed the behavior.
- Which outlet, AC cable, USB cable, and HDMI cable were tested.
- The PS5 model family and your country or region, because cable requirements and repair eligibility are localized.
Keep proof of purchase and warranty information available if the repair tool requests it. If the console can still boot intermittently, back up important saves and captures before attempting any reset or reinstallation.
Common mistakes that make a no-start problem worse
Pulling the plug while a light is on
AC removal during orange, white, blue, or blinking activity can interrupt storage writes. Wait for a fully extinguished indicator before disconnecting.
Using the wrong timed procedure
The three-minute unplugged wait addresses a blue or blinking-white error state. The 20-minute unplugged wait addresses Safe Mode that will not launch. Substituting one for the other can waste time and makes it harder to describe the failure accurately.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Jumping straight to Reset PS5
A factory reset is destructive. Try the non-erasing storage repair and connection checks first, and back up data before selecting either reset command.
Installing unofficial firmware
Use only Sony’s official update or reinstallation files. Third-party firmware is outside the supported procedure and can create additional software or service problems.
Buying a cable without checking compatibility
Sony supports cable substitution as a diagnostic step, but its troubleshooting page does not name one universal replacement. Match the connector and regional electrical requirements to your exact PS5 model before purchasing.
Quick Recap
Fast decision path
- Orange light: wake with a paired or USB-connected controller, or the console power button.
- No light: try both wake controls, then check the outlet and AC connection.
- Blinking white or persistent blue: perform the three-minute unplugged cycle; if it returns, use Safe Mode for software repair or reinstallation.
- Solid white with no image: troubleshoot HDMI and display output; the console may already be on.
- Safe Mode unavailable: test USB, HDMI, and power cables, perform the separate 20-minute unplugged procedure, and retry.
- No response after all supported checks: run Sony’s PlayStation Repairs diagnostic and review warranty eligibility.
