A PS5 that cannot get online can be failing at several different points: PlayStation Network (PSN) may be down, the console may have the wrong Wi‑Fi details, the wireless signal may be unreliable, or the router, internet service, or PS5 network configuration may be blocking communication. Start by checking PSN’s live status, then run the PS5 connection test and work from the least-invasive fixes toward advanced router changes.
Follow the sequence below. It separates a PSN outage from a home-network problem, uses a wired test to isolate Wi‑Fi issues, and shows when an error code or router administrator needs to be involved. Do not skip directly to port forwarding or custom DNS: those settings are code-dependent and can create new problems when changed without a clear reason.
1. Check whether PlayStation Network is having an outage
Before changing your router or deleting saved network settings, open PlayStation’s live network-status page. If it shows an incident or scheduled maintenance, the PS5 may be working correctly but unable to sign in. Wait until the affected service returns, then test again.

A status page can be normal while your home connection is failing, and a local failure can occur while other PSN services remain available. Use the status result as the first branch in the diagnosis rather than as a guarantee.

Record the complete error code
Write down the entire code and its accompanying message exactly as the PS5 displays them. PlayStation publishes separate guidance for network and server-connection codes; the exact code determines whether a temporary retry, credential check, DNS change, or support escalation is appropriate. A partial code can lead you to the wrong instructions.
Note when the error occurs. A failure while joining the Wi‑Fi network is different from a failure after the console has obtained an IP address, and both differ from a PSN sign-in failure. Keep a screenshot or written copy so you can quote the code to your provider or PlayStation Support.
Check another device on the same network
Try the internet on a phone or computer connected to the same router. If several devices are offline, concentrate on the modem, router, or internet provider before changing PS5 settings. If other devices work while the PS5 does not, continue with the console and Wi‑Fi checks below. This comparison identifies where to investigate; it does not prove a single cause.
2. Run the PS5 internet-connection test
Use the console’s own test before making advanced changes:
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select Network.
- Choose Test Internet Connection.
- Read each result, including whether the console obtained an IP address, reached the internet, and signed in to PSN.
If the test cannot establish Wi‑Fi, note which network the console selected and whether the failure occurs before internet access or only at PSN sign-in. Recheck the network name (SSID) and password before trying anything more complicated.
Run the test again after each meaningful change. That gives you a clear before-and-after result instead of changing several variables at once. Record whether the result changes after moving the console, restarting equipment, or switching to Ethernet. This simple log helps identify a repeatable pattern and gives support staff useful details.
3. Re-enter the Wi‑Fi network details
The official setup path is Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Select your home network, enter the current password, and connect.

Verify the SSID, password, and security method
- SSID: Select the exact network name used by your router. Nearby networks can have similar names, and a guest network may have different access rules.
- Password: Enter the current Wi‑Fi password, including capitalization and punctuation. The password may be printed on the router label or available from the router administrator or internet provider.
- Security method: Use the method configured by the access point. A mismatch between the router’s security setting and the choice made on the PS5 prevents authentication.
If you recently changed the router password or security settings, remove the old connection details by selecting the network again in the setup screen and entering the new values. Avoid assuming that a password saved on another device is still current. Check the router’s label only if its default credentials have not been changed; otherwise ask the administrator for the active password.
Use manual setup or WPS when appropriate
If the desired network does not appear in the list, choose Set Up Manually and provide the network information requested by the PS5. If your access point supports WPS, the WPS connection option is also available in this setup area. Use the router’s WPS procedure and complete the on-screen timer.
Manual setup and WPS change how the console discovers or authenticates to the access point; they do not bypass an internet-provider outage or a PSN outage. Return to Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection after connecting. If the network remains invisible, continue with placement and router checks rather than repeatedly entering the same password.
4. Improve the wireless signal before changing router settings
When the PS5 is using Wi‑Fi, position it closer to the router and remove substantial physical obstructions between the two devices. PlayStation’s error guidance specifically recommends reviewing console placement when wireless connectivity is involved.

- Move the PS5 temporarily to a location nearer the router.
- Keep large objects and dense obstructions out of the direct path as far as practical.
- Retry Test Internet Connection.
- If the connection improves, return the console to its normal location and adjust its position or the router’s position to preserve a clearer path.
A placement improvement indicates that the wireless link was a factor, but it does not identify whether distance, obstruction, or another source of interference was responsible. If moving the console has no effect, continue with the restart and wired comparison.
Do not treat a temporary improvement as proof that the PS5’s hardware is defective or that a particular radio band is at fault. The placement test is deliberately simple: it tells you whether changing the wireless path changes the result.
5. Restart the PS5, modem, and router
Restarting clears temporary console and network states without changing your saved account or game data.
- Restart the PS5 from the power menu. Wait for it to complete startup.
- Turn off the modem and router. If they are combined in one unit, turn off that unit.
- Leave the network equipment off for at least five minutes.
- Turn the modem and router back on and wait until their normal internet indicators return.
- On the PS5, reconnect to the saved network if necessary and run Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
Do not repeatedly power-cycle equipment in quick succession. The five-minute interval is the minimum wait PlayStation specifies in its troubleshooting guidance. Some code-specific guidance also describes temporary congestion or service conditions; if the restart does not help and the code suggests a temporary problem, wait and try again later.

A restart is not the same as a factory reset. It should not erase games, accounts, or saved data. If the router takes several minutes to restore service, wait for its normal connection indicators before judging the PS5 test.
6. Compare Wi‑Fi with a wired LAN connection
A wired test is one of the clearest ways to separate a wireless problem from a broader network or PSN problem. Use a suitable LAN cable only if you already have one or can run one safely to the router; buying a cable is optional, not a prerequisite for the earlier checks. Search terms such as “Ethernet cable for PS5,” “LAN cable,” or “wired connection test” describe the item, but no particular brand, category, or performance specification is required by PlayStation’s guidance.
Connect the cable
- Connect one end of the LAN cable to an available router port.
- Connect the other end to the PS5’s LAN port.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select Set Up Wired LAN, then choose Connect.
- Run Test Internet Connection.
Interpret the result
| Test result | What it tells you | Next focus |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet works, Wi‑Fi fails | The PS5 and the wider internet path can communicate over the cable; the wireless path is the main difference. | Review placement, obstructions, interference, SSID/password selection, and router wireless configuration. |
| Ethernet and Wi‑Fi both fail | The issue may be the router, modem, internet service, PSN, account path, or a console-side configuration problem. | Check PSN status, test other devices, restart equipment, and follow the exact error-code guidance. |
| Neither connection receives internet access, but other devices are also offline | The failure is not limited to the PS5’s wireless radio. | Contact the internet provider or network administrator after checking for a local outage. |
| Both connection types reach the internet but PSN sign-in fails | Basic network access exists, while the remaining failure may be service-side or related to the code shown. | Check PSN status and use PlayStation’s matching communication or server-error article. |
These are diagnostic comparisons, not guaranteed causes. A working cable does not repair an upstream provider or PSN outage; it only shows that the wired path behaves differently from Wi‑Fi. Disconnect the cable and restore the preferred connection after testing, then run the test once more.
7. Handle advanced network settings cautiously
PlayStation’s setup screens can expose IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU, and proxy settings. On the CFI-7000 model group, the advanced settings also include Multi-Link Operation. These options affect how the PS5 communicates with the router and should not be changed at random.

If you are unfamiliar with these terms, PlayStation advises asking your internet provider or network administrator. Record the original values before changing anything so you can restore them if the result is worse. Do not copy settings from a different household or assume a setting that helped another error applies to yours.
Error NW-102650-4
For NW-102650-4, PlayStation lists a temporary DNS change or a manually configured static IP as possible troubleshooting options. Those are code-dependent suggestions, not universal fixes. A static IP must be chosen so it does not conflict with another device, and DNS values must be entered exactly as supplied by the administrator or provider.
The same guidance lists these ports for this error:
- TCP: 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480
- UDP: 3478, 3479, 49152–65535
Opening ports requires router access and can affect the security of the home network. Ask the internet provider or network administrator for the correct procedure rather than copying a port-forwarding rule without understanding it. Port forwarding is not a general-purpose remedy for every PS5 connection failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPort filtering and proxy settings
Another PS5 communication-error page advises asking the internet provider about port filtering. Filtering can block required traffic even when the Wi‑Fi password is correct. Discuss the exact error code, router model, and connection type with the provider; do not disable every firewall or filtering feature as a first step.
IPv4 and IPv6 compatibility
PS5 supports IPv6, but an IPv6-only network is not supported. The router must also use IPv4. If the router is configured for IPv6-only operation, change it to use IPv4 and consult the router manufacturer or network administrator for the correct configuration. This is a router-side compatibility requirement, not a reason to manually disable IPv6 on every network.
8. Use the error code and symptoms to choose the next branch
The following decision points prevent unnecessary resets:
- PSN status shows an incident: wait for service restoration and retry; home-network changes are unlikely to correct a platform outage.
- The SSID is missing: move closer, verify that the access point is operating, then try Set Up Manually or WPS if supported.
- The SSID appears but authentication fails: re-enter the current password and confirm the security method.
- Other household devices also lack internet: investigate the modem, router, or provider.
- Ethernet works while Wi‑Fi fails: concentrate on wireless placement and router wireless configuration.
- Both Wi‑Fi and Ethernet reach the internet but PSN does not: check the live status page and follow the exact server or communication-error article.
- A code points to temporary congestion: after the basic restart, leave the connection alone for a while and try again later.
There is no published official success-rate comparison for restarting, DNS changes, wired testing, or other individual fixes. Treat the sequence as fault isolation rather than a ranking of remedies. The most useful comparison is not “which fix works most often,” but “which test changes the suspected part of the connection.”
9. When to contact your provider, administrator, or PlayStation
Escalate after you have checked PSN status, confirmed the credentials, restarted the PS5 and network equipment, and compared Wi‑Fi with Ethernet when practical.
Contact the internet provider or network administrator when
- Other devices cannot access the internet.
- The router uses IPv6-only mode and you need help enabling IPv4.
- Port filtering, DNS, DHCP, proxy, MTU, or static-IP settings require administrator access.
- You need help opening the code-specific TCP or UDP ports.
- The router requires a firmware or configuration change you cannot safely make.
Provide the provider with the exact PS5 error code, whether Ethernet worked, whether other devices were online, and the time of the failure. Those details are more useful than saying only that “the PS5 has no Wi‑Fi.” Ask whether there is a local outage, maintenance, filtering policy, or router configuration that affects the console.
Contact PlayStation support when
Use the exact error-code article or PlayStation Repairs/support path if the console still cannot connect after the network-side checks, especially when another device works on the same router and a correctly configured wired connection also fails. Keep the recorded code and the results of each connection test available for the support conversation. Avoid making repeated advanced changes while waiting for support, because they can obscure which configuration produced each result.

Exact PlayStation guidance for a temporary line problem
PlayStation Support’s official guidance for one network error states: “If the above does not solve the problem, the line is likely to be temporarily busy. Please leave it for a while and try again later.” If your code-specific article gives similar advice, a later retry is appropriate after the basic checks; repeatedly changing settings during a temporary service condition can make diagnosis harder.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my PS5 connect to Wi‑Fi but not PSN?
Internet access and PSN sign-in are separate stages. Run Test Internet Connection, check the live PSN status page, and use the exact server or communication-error article for the displayed code. If another device is online and both Wi‑Fi and Ethernet reach the internet, focus on PSN status and code-specific guidance rather than changing the Wi‑Fi password.
What if my Wi‑Fi network does not appear on the PS5?
Move the console closer to the router and verify that the access point is operating. In Set Up Internet Connection, choose Set Up Manually; WPS is another available option when the access point supports it. If the SSID remains absent, ask the router administrator to check the wireless configuration.
Should I change DNS immediately?
No. PlayStation lists a temporary DNS change for specific guidance such as NW-102650-4, not as a universal first step. Save the original values, use values supplied by your provider or administrator, and ask for help if you are unfamiliar with DNS.
Will buying an Ethernet cable fix the problem?
A LAN cable enables a useful comparison and may provide a reliable wired connection, but it cannot fix a PSN outage, an internet-provider failure, or incorrect router settings. Buy one only if you do not already have a suitable cable and can safely connect the PS5 to the router.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does PS5 require IPv4?
PS5 supports IPv6, but PlayStation says IPv6-only networks are unsupported. The router must also use IPv4. Contact the router manufacturer, provider, or administrator if you need to change that mode.
How long should the router stay off?
Leave the modem and router off for at least five minutes, then power them on and wait for normal service indicators before testing the PS5 again. A quick off-and-on cycle does not follow PlayStation’s stated interval.
Bottom line
Check PSN status and record the full error first. Then verify the SSID, password, and security method, run the PS5 connection test, improve placement, restart the console and network equipment for at least five minutes, and compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet when possible. Only after those checks should you consider code-specific DNS, IP, port, proxy, MTU, or filtering changes. If the problem persists, give your provider or PlayStation Support the exact code and your test results.
