A PS5 game update that stays queued, pauses immediately, or fails during installation is usually recoverable without resetting the console. Work from least destructive to most disruptive: check PlayStation service status, test the connection, restart the download, verify storage and system software, restart the PS5, then use Safe Mode or reinstall the game if necessary.
First confirm that the item is a game patch, not a PS5 console system-software update. PlayStation uses different troubleshooting procedures for those two download types. The system-software procedure, including its USB recovery method, should not be used for an ordinary game update.
Identify what is actually stuck
Open the control centre and select Downloads/Uploads. Read the name of the item before changing anything. A game title or game add-on is handled as a game update. An item labeled as PS5 system software or a console update follows a separate path described later in this guide.

A download that never starts is different from an update that downloads but will not install. The same early checks apply, but an installation error often leads to database maintenance or a game reinstall rather than repeated network changes.

1. Check PlayStation service status before changing the console
Open PlayStation’s service-status page and look for an alert affecting downloads, the PlayStation Store, or account services. If an incident is listed, wait for service to recover before deleting queues, rebuilding the database, or repeatedly restarting the router. A server-side interruption cannot be repaired by local console settings, and repeated retries can leave several duplicate attempts in the queue.
If no incident is reported, continue with the local checks below. Status pages can lag behind a newly developing interruption, so a failure that begins suddenly on more than one game may still be service-related even when the page has not yet changed.
2. Test the PS5 internet connection
On the PS5, go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Let the test finish and note whether the console reports a connection problem. If it does, fix the network before troubleshooting the game installation.

- Confirm that the console is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network and that the router is powered and online.
- Retry the connection test after the network is available again.
- If Wi-Fi is unstable, use a wired Ethernet connection as a troubleshooting aid. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one practical way to test a direct connection, but it will not solve a PlayStation service outage, insufficient storage, or a damaged game installation.
PlayStation specifically recommends a wired connection in its system-software update troubleshooting. For a game patch, treat Ethernet as an optional diagnostic step rather than a guaranteed fix.
When the test passes
A successful connection test only shows that the console can reach the network at that moment. It does not prove that the particular download is healthy. Continue to the download-queue steps instead of assuming the game installation is damaged.
3. Restart the game download in Downloads/Uploads
Use the control centre to open Downloads/Uploads, highlight the affected game update, and apply the least disruptive retry first.

- Choose Pause, wait briefly, and then choose Resume. This is the recommended first action when a download will not start or appears frozen.
- If it still will not proceed, select the queued download and choose Cancel and Delete. This removes that queued attempt; it does not reset the PS5.
- Open Game Library, select the game, and start the update again. If the game is on disc, insert the disc before retrying so the console can identify the installed title.
Watch the queue after restarting it. A download that changes from queued to active is responding normally; an item that immediately returns to a waiting state needs the storage and system checks that follow.
4. Check free storage and PS5 system software
Confirm available storage
Go to Settings > Storage and check the available space on the drive where the game is installed. Then open the game’s product details and compare the free-space requirement shown there with the space available on the console.
Do not judge capacity by the size of the patch alone. The console may need additional working room while it downloads and applies an update, and the product page’s requirement is the relevant value for that title. If space is low, remove an unneeded installed game or other large item, then retry the update from the Game Library.
Install pending PS5 system software updates
Keep the console’s system software current. A game patch can fail when the console is running an outdated system version, and PlayStation lists current system software as part of its game and application update troubleshooting. Check the system-software update control in Settings, complete any pending console update, and then retry the game update.
Do not confuse completing a normal system update with choosing Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). Reinstalling system software is a recovery operation that deletes all data on the console; it is not a routine remedy for one game patch.
5. Restart the PS5 and try once more
After checking storage and system software, restart the console through the PS5 power menu. Once the home screen returns, open Downloads/Uploads and retry the game update. This restart clears a temporary process state without deleting the game or changing your stored settings.

If the update fails at the same point after a clean restart, note whether it is still a download failure or has changed to an installation error. That distinction determines whether the next useful step is Safe Mode maintenance or a fresh game installation.
6. Use Safe Mode for cache and database problems
When ordinary retries do not work, PlayStation recommends the Safe Mode options Clear Cache and Rebuild Database for download or update problems. These options are maintenance tools, not a factory reset.
Enter Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 completely off rather than leaving it in Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the console’s power button until you hear the second beep, then release it.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the controller’s PS button when Safe Mode appears.
Menu labels can change with system-software versions. Read each option carefully before confirming an action.

Clear the cache
Choose the cache-clearing option first when it is available. It removes temporary system data that can interfere with a download while leaving installed games and personal content in place. Return to the normal PS5 interface and retry the update.
Rebuild the database
If clearing the cache does not help, return to Safe Mode and choose Rebuild Database. PlayStation describes this operation as scanning the drive and creating a new database of the console’s content. It is intended to correct database organization problems that can prevent a download or installation from being recognized correctly.
Do not interrupt the console while it is rebuilding. The duration depends on the amount of content and the state of the drive; PlayStation does not publish a universal completion time. When the PS5 starts normally again, retry the game update before taking the more disruptive step of deleting the game.

7. Delete and reinstall the affected game
Reinstalling the individual game is a later step because it removes the installed game files and requires the complete title to be downloaded again, or copied again from disc. Use it when the update repeatedly fails after service, network, storage, restart, and Safe Mode checks.

- From the PS5 home screen, highlight the affected game, press the options button, and choose the delete command.
- Confirm removal of the game installation.
- Open Game Library, find the title, and choose Download. For a disc title, insert the game disc and allow the console to install it.
- After the base game is installed, let the update download before launching the title.
This procedure targets one game. It is not the same as reinstalling PS5 system software, which deletes data from the entire console. If the game’s update fails again immediately after a clean reinstall, stop repeating the same installation and move to the exact error-code guidance or PlayStation Support.
8. Follow the exact error-code instructions
An error code narrows the diagnosis. Record the complete code, including every letter, number, and hyphen, and use PlayStation’s support entry for that exact code rather than applying a remedy for a different failure.
CE-120706-6: game update stopped installing
PlayStation Support describes CE-120706-6 this way: “An error has occurred that stopped the game update from installing on your PlayStation®5 console.” Its listed remedies are:
- Restore licenses on the PS5.
- Restart the console.
- Use Safe Mode to rebuild the database.
- If the problem remains, delete and reinstall the game.
This code indicates an installation failure, so repeatedly testing Wi-Fi without addressing the installed game and database is unlikely to be the most direct next step.

CE-107928-7: game download stopped
CE-107928-7 is listed as an error that stopped a game from downloading. Use the support instructions for that code and follow the download-focused steps shown there. Do not treat CE-107928-7 and CE-120706-6 as interchangeable: one identifies a download failure, while the other identifies an update-installation failure.

9. If the stuck item is the PS5 system-software update
Use this section only when Downloads/Uploads identifies the item as the console’s system software. PlayStation provides a separate recovery sequence:
- Select the system-software update in Downloads/Uploads.
- Open View Error Info.
- Choose Try Again.
If the system update fails repeatedly, PlayStation also provides an official USB installation method. It requires a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, plus an update file placed in the exact folders and with the exact filename specified by PlayStation. Follow those folder and naming instructions precisely; a game patch cannot be repaired with that USB procedure.
Do not select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as a routine experiment. PlayStation states that reinstalling the system software deletes all data on the console. Reserve that operation for the circumstances covered by PlayStation’s own recovery instructions, after less destructive options have failed and you understand the data loss.

When to contact PlayStation Support
Contact PlayStation Support when the service-status page is clear, the connection test succeeds, the queue has been recreated, storage is sufficient, the console is current, Safe Mode maintenance has been completed, and a fresh installation still fails. Include the game title, whether it is a disc or digital installation, the exact error code if one appears, and the point at which the failure occurs.
Support can distinguish an account or license issue from a local installation problem and can provide the current instructions for your PS5 system-software version. Menu names and firmware behavior can change, so use the instructions shown for your console rather than an older walkthrough.
What not to do
- Do not repeatedly retry during a posted PlayStation service outage.
- Do not delete the game before checking the queue, connection, storage, and system software; reinstalling is slower and more disruptive.
- Do not use the PS5 system-software USB procedure for a normal game patch.
- Do not choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) to fix one game update; that operation deletes console data.
- Do not substitute another error code’s remedy for the code displayed on your console.
For most stuck game updates, the successful path is a simple one: verify service and network conditions, recreate the download entry, make enough storage available, restart the PS5, and reserve Safe Mode or reinstallation for failures that persist.
