Most DualSense connection problems can be worked through in a specific order: pair the controller over USB, reset it if pairing fails, update PS5 and controller software, then test wired and wireless behavior separately. Input lag needs a different approach: official support material does not identify one cause or promise that a reset will cure it, so isolate when and where the delay occurs before treating it as a controller fault.

This guide covers the standard DualSense and explains where instructions are specific to DualSense Edge. It also shows when a replacement cable, a repair assessment, or further diagnosis is more appropriate than another reset.

Identify which problem you have

“My PS5 controller is broken” can describe three different symptoms. Identify the pattern first so that you do not use a reset to chase a display or game-specific delay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Symptom What you observe First path
Won’t pair The controller does not become usable after you press the PS button, or it was last paired with another PS5. Pair it by USB, then reset and update if necessary.
Keeps disconnecting It works briefly and then loses the connection, especially after the cable is removed. Reconnect by USB, compare wired and wireless behavior, then reset and update.
Input lag Buttons, sticks, or triggers appear to respond late. Determine whether the delay affects every game, only one game, wired play, or streamed play. Do not assume the controller is the cause.

A controller that works while plugged in but drops out wirelessly gives you a useful observation, not a proven diagnosis. It may justify more careful cable, port, software, and repair checks, but it does not by itself establish why the wireless connection is failing.

Before you start: gather the right equipment and details

Use the cable supplied with the controller for the first pairing attempt. If it is unavailable, use a compatible USB cable that explicitly supports data or synchronization as well as charging. A cable that only supplies power can light or charge the controller while failing to provide the data link needed for recognition. Have the PS5 turned on for normal pairing, but plan to turn it completely off before using the controller reset procedure.

Note whether you have a standard DualSense or a DualSense Edge. The two controllers share basic pairing and reset ideas, but the documented Communication Method menu used to force a wired test is specifically listed for Edge. Also note whether the controller was recently used with another PS5, because one DualSense pairs with one PS5 console at a time.

Do the official USB pairing procedure first

Use this procedure for a new controller, a controller that has lost its pairing, or one previously used with another PS5. Each DualSense pairs with one PS5 console at a time; moving it to a different console requires pairing it with that console again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn on the PS5.
  2. Connect the DualSense to the console with the cable supplied with the controller, or with a compatible USB cable that supports data as well as charging.
  3. Press the PS button on the controller.
  4. Wait for the PS5 to recognize it and allow you to navigate.
  5. If you want wireless use, disconnect the cable after pairing and check whether the controller remains connected.

Start with the supplied cable because it is the cable used by PlayStation’s pairing instructions. A charging-only USB-C cable can power the controller but may not provide the data connection required for pairing or reconnection. If you use a replacement, choose one explicitly described as a data or sync cable.

If the controller was used with another PS5

A DualSense is not simultaneously paired to multiple PS5 consoles. Connect it to the intended console by USB and press PS again. If it still does not appear, continue with the reset procedure rather than repeatedly pressing the button. After a successful pairing, disconnect the cable once and observe the controller for several minutes before declaring the issue solved.

If pressing PS produces no usable connection

Confirm that the console is actually on, that the cable is firmly inserted into the controller and PS5, and that you are using a data-capable cable. Try the supplied cable before testing a replacement. If the controller is recognized over USB but immediately loses the connection after unplugging, classify that as a wireless-versus-wired observation and proceed to the comparison test below; it is not proof of a particular failed component.

Reset the DualSense without resetting the PS5

The controller reset is a separate operation from resetting the console. It clears the controller’s connection state so that you can establish a fresh USB pairing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn off the PS5 completely.
  2. Disconnect the controller from the USB cable.
  3. Find the small reset hole on the back of the controller.
  4. Insert a pin or similar thin tool and hold the reset button for at least five seconds.
  5. Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with the official USB cable.
  6. Press the PS button and wait for the console to recognize it.

Do not skip the five-second hold, and do not connect the controller again until the console is off and the reset has been completed. If it pairs after the reset, remove the cable and observe whether wireless play remains stable. A controller reset should not be described as a console reset: it does not reinstall PS5 software or erase the console.

If the reset appears to have done nothing, repeat the sequence once carefully, checking that the tool reached the reset button and that the PS5 was off first. Then try the supplied or another known-good data cable. Persistent failure after these documented steps is a reason to use PlayStation Repairs, not a reason to keep repeating the same reset indefinitely.

Update PS5 and DualSense software

PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance says to update the PS5 system software to the latest available version when connection trouble continues. A controller that still works well enough to navigate menus can be updated from the console.

Update the PS5 system software

Use the PS5’s normal system-software update controls and install the latest version offered by the console. The exact screens can change with system releases, so follow the current on-screen update prompt rather than relying on an old screenshot or menu label. Allow the update to finish before judging whether connection behavior changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check DualSense device software on PS5

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accessories.
  3. Open Controller (General).
  4. Select DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
  5. Install an update if the PS5 offers one.

PlayStation states that controller-software updates are added when PS5 system software is updated. Therefore, keeping the console current is part of keeping the controller software current. If no controller update is offered, do not infer that the controller has failed; simply continue with the other diagnostic observations.

Update from a Windows PC when the controller cannot be used on the console

PlayStation Accessories is the PC route listed by PlayStation for checking and installing DualSense updates. Connect the controller to the PC with a compatible data cable, open the PlayStation Accessories application, and follow its current update instructions. The application’s labels and supported operating-system requirements can change; use the requirements shown by the application rather than assuming every PC configuration is supported. A PC update is an alternative update route, not a substitute for using a data-capable cable.

Separate wireless trouble from wired trouble

A wired test is an isolation step. It can show whether the symptom appears only after the wireless link is being used, but it does not prove that wireless interference or a particular component is responsible.

  1. Pair the controller using the USB procedure above.
  2. Use the PS5 for several minutes with the cable connected.
  3. Note whether the disconnect or delayed response occurs while wired.
  4. Disconnect the cable and repeat the same activity wirelessly.
  5. Record exactly what changes: immediate loss of control, occasional dropouts, or no difference.

Keep the comparison fair: use the same game, menu action, controller, and approximate test duration in both modes. Check that the plug is fully seated at both ends and try another known-good data cable or console USB port if the wired connection itself is unstable. Use the supplied cable first; a replacement should support data, not charging only.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The DualSense Edge communication setting

PlayStation’s documented menu path for forcing a wired communication test is specific to DualSense Edge: Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Communication Method > Use USB Cable. Do not present that path as a universal setting for every DualSense model. If you have a standard DualSense, use the current options shown for your controller and software version. If the menu is absent, that absence alone does not establish a hardware fault.

What to do about PS5 controller input lag

Input lag is a perceived delay between an action and the result. The phrase can describe controller response, a delay confined to one game, or delay introduced by streamed play. Official support material available for this topic does not establish a specific cause, give a latency number, or guarantee that resetting the controller, replacing a cable, or changing a setting will eliminate the delay.

Define the delay before changing anything

  • Controller-only delay: buttons or sticks feel late in more than one game.
  • Single-game delay: the problem appears in one title but not another.
  • Streamed-play delay: local play feels normal while a streamed session feels late.
  • Intermittent delay: the response is usually normal but periodically drops or catches up.

First check whether the delay is also visible when navigating the PS5 home screen. Then test the same simple action in a second game if one is available. Write down the controller model, the affected games, whether the symptom occurs in menus, whether it happens with USB connected, and whether it began after a software update or a change in how the controller is connected. These observations help a repair or support technician assess the problem without turning an assumption into a diagnosis.

Use a wired comparison as an isolation check

  1. Connect the controller with a known-good data cable.
  2. Test the same game and, if possible, the same menu action that felt delayed wirelessly.
  3. Repeat the test after disconnecting the cable.
  4. Compare the results without changing other variables.

If the delay is identical in both modes, the wired-versus-wireless comparison has not isolated the connection as the explanation. If it appears only in one game, treat the game-specific pattern as important information rather than assuming the DualSense is defective. If it occurs in every tested context, include that pattern in a PlayStation repair request. If it occurs only during streamed play, record that distinction rather than labeling it a controller failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not promise a reset-based lag cure

Resetting is an official step for pairing and connection trouble. It is not documented as a guaranteed input-lag remedy. Perform it when the controller also has pairing or disconnection symptoms, but keep the lag result separate in your notes. A reset that restores pairing does not establish that it corrected latency. Likewise, replacing a cable is appropriate when the existing cable cannot carry data or is physically unreliable, but there is no documented guarantee that a new cable will remove perceived lag.

Decision table: the next action for each result

Result What it tells you Next action
USB pairing succeeds and wireless remains stable The immediate pairing failure is resolved. Continue using the controller and keep PS5 software current.
USB pairing succeeds, but wireless disconnects The symptom is different in wireless use; the cause is not established. Check cable and port seating, repeat reset and updates, then document the pattern for repair.
USB pairing fails even after reset The standard reconnection path has not restored recognition. Try the supplied or another compatible data cable and then use PlayStation Repairs if the failure persists.
Lag appears only in one game The symptom is not shown to be a controller-wide failure. Record the title and conditions and seek game-specific support if appropriate.
Lag appears wired and wirelessly in several contexts The wired test did not isolate the wireless connection. Provide the model, games, connection modes, and timing to PlayStation Repairs.
Wired play is stable but the cable connection itself repeatedly drops The wired test is inconclusive because the connection path is not stable. Reseat the plugs, use the supplied or a known-good data cable, try another PS5 USB port, and repeat the comparison.

When to use PlayStation Repairs

PlayStation directs users to PlayStation Repairs when reset and software updates do not resolve ongoing connection trouble. Use that route for a controller that repeatedly disconnects, cannot be recognized over a known-good data connection, or continues to show a persistent hardware or connection symptom after the documented steps.

Before starting a repair request, gather:

  • The controller model: standard DualSense or DualSense Edge.
  • Whether it pairs over USB at all.
  • Whether the cable is the supplied cable or a replacement data cable.
  • Whether the issue occurs wired, wirelessly, or in both modes.
  • Whether the issue affects every game, one game, or PS5 menus as well.
  • Whether it began after an update or a change of console.
  • What happened immediately before a disconnect: unplugging the cable, changing games, waking the console, or another repeatable action.
  • Whether a reset was held for at least five seconds and whether software updates were offered.

Describe observations rather than conclusions. “Disconnects within five minutes after removing USB in two games” is more useful than “Bluetooth is broken” when the cause has not been established. A replacement controller is a later option, not the first fix supported by the documented procedures. Repair assessment is the appropriate next step when the official pairing, reset, and update sequence has failed. No fixed repair price or guaranteed turnaround is established here, so check the current PlayStation Repairs page for the options available in your region.

Common mistakes that prolong the problem

  • Using a charge-only cable: power reaches the controller, but the data connection needed for pairing may not.
  • Resetting the console instead of the controller: the reset hole on the controller is the relevant control for this procedure.
  • Holding the reset button for less than five seconds: follow the documented minimum hold time.
  • Testing only wirelessly: without a wired comparison, you cannot tell whether the symptom changes with the connection method.
  • Treating a one-game delay as proof of controller failure: record where the delay occurs before escalating.
  • Assuming a successful reset proves lag is fixed: pairing recovery and latency are separate outcomes.
  • Applying the DualSense Edge menu path to every model: the documented Communication Method setting is Edge-specific.
  • Pairing with the wrong console: a DualSense pairs with one PS5 at a time and must be paired again when moved.
  • Changing several variables at once: if you replace the cable, update software, and switch games simultaneously, you lose a clear comparison.
  • Repeating resets without recording results: note what changed after each official step so a repair request contains useful evidence.

A concise recovery sequence

For a controller that disconnects or will not pair, use this order:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn on the intended PS5 and connect the controller with the supplied or compatible data cable.
  2. Press PS and confirm that the console recognizes it.
  3. Remove the cable and check wireless stability.
  4. If the problem remains, turn off the PS5, hold the rear reset button for at least five seconds, reconnect by USB, and press PS.
  5. Update PS5 system software and check Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
  6. Repeat the wired-versus-wireless comparison.
  7. If connection trouble persists, submit the documented observations to PlayStation Repairs.

For input lag, begin with the definition and comparison instead: test the same action in menus and more than one game, compare USB and wireless modes, and record the conditions. Official guidance does not support a single guaranteed lag fix, so accurate observations are more useful than repeating resets without a new result.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t my PS5 controller pair after I used it on another PS5?

Each DualSense pairs with one PS5 console at a time. Connect it to the intended PS5 with a compatible data-capable USB cable, turn the console on, and press PS. If it still is not recognized, turn the console off and perform the rear-button reset for at least five seconds, then reconnect by USB and press PS again.

Can any USB-C cable pair a DualSense?

No. Use the supplied cable first, or a replacement explicitly described as supporting data or synchronization. A charging-only cable may provide power without the data connection required for pairing or reconnection.

Does resetting the controller reset my PS5?

No. The reset hole on the back resets the controller’s connection state. The documented procedure requires turning the PS5 off first, disconnecting USB, holding the button for at least five seconds, and then pairing again by USB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long should I hold the DualSense reset button?

Hold the small rear reset button for at least five seconds. Use a pin or similar thin tool, and complete the reset while the PS5 is turned off and the controller is disconnected.

Why does the controller work wired but disconnect wirelessly?

That pattern shows a difference between the two connection modes, but it does not prove a specific cause. Check the cable and port, repeat the official reset and update steps, compare the same activity wired and wirelessly, and use PlayStation Repairs if the behavior continues.

Will a controller reset fix input lag?

There is no documented guarantee that it will. Resetting is an official response to pairing and connection trouble. For lag, determine whether the delay occurs in menus, several games, wired play, wireless play, or streamed play, and record the result separately from any pairing improvement.

Where is the wired communication setting?

PlayStation documents Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Communication Method > Use USB Cable for DualSense Edge. Do not assume that menu path exists on every standard DualSense; check the options shown for the specific model and current software.

Should I buy a replacement controller immediately?

Not as the first step. Pair by USB, reset the controller correctly, update PS5 and controller software, and compare wired and wireless behavior. If the issue persists, use PlayStation Repairs for an assessment before treating replacement as the next option.

What information should I give support?

Provide the model, whether USB pairing succeeds, which cable you used, whether the symptom is wired or wireless, the affected games and menus, when it began, and what happened after the reset and software-update checks. Specific observations help distinguish an unresolved connection problem from a game-specific or streamed-play delay.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the correct first fix for a PS5 controller that will not pair?

Turn on the intended PS5, connect the DualSense with the supplied or another data-capable USB cable, and press PS. If it remains unrecognized, turn the PS5 off, hold the rear reset button for at least five seconds, reconnect by USB, and press PS again.

Can a charging-only cable cause pairing failure?

Yes. It can power the controller without carrying the data needed for pairing. Use the supplied cable or one explicitly rated for data or synchronization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the DualSense Edge wired-mode menu available on every PS5 controller?

The documented path—Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Communication Method > Use USB Cable—is specific to DualSense Edge. Check the current menus for a standard DualSense instead of assuming the same option exists.

What should I do if lag occurs only in one game?

Record the game, menu or gameplay context, and connection mode. A one-game pattern does not by itself show a controller-wide failure; seek game-specific help if the pattern remains.

When should I contact PlayStation Repairs?

Use PlayStation Repairs when the official USB pairing, five-second reset, software updates, and wired-versus-wireless checks do not resolve repeated disconnections, recognition failures, or persistent symptoms.

The Bottom Line

Pair the DualSense over USB first, using a data-capable cable. If that fails, turn off the PS5 and hold the controller’s rear reset button for at least five seconds, then pair again and update the PS5 and controller software. Compare wired and wireless behavior without claiming that the comparison proves a cause. For input lag, test menus, multiple games, wired play, wireless play, and streamed play separately. If the documented steps do not resolve the problem, record those results and use PlayStation Repairs rather than assuming a reset or replacement will cure it.
