If a portable CarPlay screen shows the CarPlay interface but produces no sound, the screen connection is only half of the system. Audio must leave the display through its built-in speaker, an AUX cable, an FM transmitter, or Bluetooth, then reach the selected input on the vehicle stereo. Identify the route your model actually supports, unmute and raise volume on every device, select the matching car input, and then test the route in order. The steps below isolate the fault without assuming that all portable screens use the same menus or hardware.

Why CarPlay can work while the sound does not

CarPlay carries the interface and app controls, but a portable display still needs a separate audio path. Depending on the model, that path may be a speaker inside the display, a 3.5 mm AUX output, an FM transmitter, or a Bluetooth connection. The car must also be listening to the corresponding source. A visible map or music screen therefore does not prove that the vehicle speakers are receiving audio.

Start by separating the system into three points:

  • Source: the iPhone and the CarPlay app producing audio.
  • Portable display: the screen’s volume, mute state, output selection, and supported hardware.
  • Vehicle receiver: the car stereo’s selected input, volume, mute state, and any Bluetooth or wireless-CarPlay routing.

A fault at any one point can look like “CarPlay has no sound.” Do not buy a cable or change an FM frequency until you know which route your display is designed to use.

Identify your screen’s audio route first

Open the portable screen’s audio or output menu and check its model-specific manual. Look for labels such as Speaker, AUX out, FM transmitter, Bluetooth audio, or output device. Some units offer only one of these methods; others let you choose among several. Menu names and pairing arrangements are not standardized.

Route What you must have Where the car must be set Typical setup concern
Built-in speaker A working speaker in the portable display No car input is required; sound stays at the screen The screen can be muted or its volume can be independent of the phone and car
AUX An audio output on the display, an AUX input on the stereo, and a suitable cable AUX or the vehicle’s external-audio source Either plug, the cable, or the stereo input can be loose or incorrectly selected
FM transmitter An FM-transmit feature in the display and an FM radio in the car The exact FM frequency transmitted by the display Interference occurs when the chosen frequency is occupied or weak at your location
Bluetooth The Bluetooth roles supported by your particular display and stereo The paired Bluetooth source or the source selected by the car The phone may send media to a different paired device

If the manual does not list one of these outputs, do not assume the port or menu exists. A USB socket used for power or updates is not automatically an audio output.

Run the quick checks before changing connections

  1. Play known-good audio. Start a song or other audio you know normally plays on the iPhone. This avoids diagnosing a paused, unavailable, or app-specific stream.
  2. Check the portable screen. Raise its volume, cancel mute, and confirm that its output is enabled. If it has a volume wheel or physical mute key, operate that control as well as the on-screen control.
  3. Check the iPhone. Raise media volume and verify that the phone is not muted or sending audio to an unintended destination in the playback output picker.
  4. Check the car stereo. Raise the stereo volume, cancel mute, and select the input that corresponds to your route: AUX, FM radio, or Bluetooth.
  5. Restart the display. Turn the portable screen off and on using its normal power control. If its own speaker remains silent, Laser Corporation’s NAVC-BHUDH156 support guide recommends testing known-good audio and restarting the unit; the exact USB-MP3 test in that guide is specific to that model, not a universal step.

If sound returns after one of these checks, leave the other settings unchanged and note which control solved it. If not, continue with the route-specific section below.

Fix no sound through the portable screen’s built-in speaker

Confirm that the speaker is the selected output

Some portable displays keep a separate output selector even when no cable is connected. Choose the internal speaker, disable an unused AUX or Bluetooth output, and make sure the speaker is not muted. The phone’s CarPlay volume and the display’s speaker volume may be independent, so adjust both while audio is playing.

Use a local test when the model supports it

A local music file or the display’s own test sound can distinguish a display-speaker fault from a CarPlay routing problem. Follow the test named in your manual. Laser’s NAVC-BHUDH156 guidance includes a USB-MP3 test for that model; do not treat that particular test as evidence that every screen can play USB audio.

Restart before considering a reset

Restart the screen and the iPhone, then reconnect CarPlay. A factory reset is a later step only when the model’s instructions call for it. It can erase saved Bluetooth pairings, FM settings, and other preferences; record those settings first and follow the exact reset sequence for your device.

Fix no sound through an AUX cable

Set both ends to the same physical path

  1. Insert the cable fully into the portable display’s audio output.
  2. Insert the other plug fully into the vehicle’s AUX input.
  3. On the stereo, select AUX or the equivalent external-audio source.
  4. Play audio and raise volume on the phone, display, and stereo.

AUX works only when the display actually provides an audio output and the car provides an AUX input. A power-only socket, a microphone input, or a digital connector will not substitute for those ports.

Test the cable without guessing

Disconnect the display and connect another known-working audio device to the same car AUX input. If that device also has no sound, investigate the stereo input or its source selection. Then test the cable with another compatible device. If the fault follows the cable, replace it with a suitable 3.5 mm AUX cable. Laser Corporation’s 2024 guidance specifically recommends checking the cable and trying an alternate cable when AUX troubleshooting does not resolve the issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret the result

  • Another device works through the car’s AUX input, but the display does not: check the display’s output setting, plug fit, and compatibility.
  • The display works with another cable: the original cable is the likely fault.
  • Nothing works through that AUX input: the car’s input, stereo source selection, or stereo hardware needs attention.

Do not buy an AUX cable to fix an FM-frequency mismatch, a muted stereo, or Bluetooth routing; a cable cannot correct those problems.

Fix no sound through an FM transmitter

Match the two frequencies exactly

  1. Open the display’s FM-transmitter setting and note the frequency it is transmitting.
  2. Tune the car radio to that exact frequency.
  3. Set the car stereo to FM radio, cancel mute, and play audio from CarPlay.

Laser Corporation’s NAVC-BHUDH156 troubleshooting instruction states: “Check that the FM frequency on both the portable screen and the car stereo are the same.” That is a device-support instruction, not a universal frequency recommendation.

Move to a clearer frequency when there is interference

If matching frequencies produces static, another station, or very weak sound, choose a different frequency that is clear where the vehicle is currently located, then tune both devices to the new value. A frequency that is clear at home may be occupied elsewhere. Do not prescribe one “best” FM number for every city or car.

Restart the radio path

After changing the frequency, restart the portable screen and the car stereo if the signal still does not pass. Confirm that the display’s FM transmitter is enabled rather than merely showing a stored frequency. If the radio receives other stations normally but never receives the display on a correctly matched clear frequency, consult the screen’s manual or manufacturer support for transmitter limitations.

Fix no sound through Bluetooth

Use the pairing arrangement the manual specifies

Bluetooth roles differ. In one installation the phone may send media to the car; in another, the phone may pair to the portable display and the display may send sound onward. Some screens support Bluetooth only for calls or setup, not for media output. Pair the intended phone, screen, and stereo in the arrangement documented for that model rather than adding random pairings.

Choose the actual audio destination

  1. Open the iPhone’s media output picker while audio is playing.
  2. Select the device that should receive the media according to the screen and vehicle instructions.
  3. On the car stereo, select its Bluetooth or phone-media source.
  4. Raise volume on every active device and cancel mute.

If the iPhone lists several remembered devices, it can send media to a headset, the car, or the portable screen instead of the intended destination. Remove or temporarily disconnect an irrelevant device only if the model’s instructions permit it, then pair again using the vehicle’s documented process.

Reset Bluetooth deliberately

Toggle Bluetooth off and on, restart the iPhone and display, and remove and re-pair the connection if necessary. Apple recommends checking the vehicle manual for pairing steps and verifying the supported CarPlay connection. Its general instructions are available in Apple’s support guide for connecting an iPhone to a car. That guidance covers supported vehicle connections, Bluetooth, and USB; it does not document every portable display’s audio menu.

When the CarPlay connection itself is unstable

If the interface disconnects, freezes, or audio stops only after a connection drop, troubleshoot the connection before blaming the speaker or car input.

  • Install current software available for the iPhone and the vehicle or display, following each manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Restart the iPhone, portable screen, and vehicle stereo.
  • For wired USB CarPlay, try another compatible cable or another supported USB port.
  • For wireless CarPlay, check Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and disable Personal Hotspot when the vehicle’s instructions identify it as a conflict.
  • Try another audio app. If one app is silent while another plays, the issue may be app-specific rather than an output failure.

Ford’s 2025 Expedition manual lists checking Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, restarting the iPhone, re-pairing, and disabling Personal Hotspot among its wireless-CarPlay troubleshooting steps. Apply those steps only when relevant to that vehicle and connection type; a different car may use different labels or requirements.

When only some audio is missing

Separate app behavior from a dead output

Test a second audio app and a local or known-good track. If the second source plays through the same route, the first app, account, stream, or media session is the likely cause. If every source is silent, continue testing the output route.

Check for vehicle source conflicts

Vehicle software can interrupt or replace an audio source. Toyota’s 2024 Highlander manual describes cases in which audio from an app that is not compatible with CarPlay interrupts playback or prevents a return to the previous source. That is vehicle-specific behavior, not a universal explanation for every silent portable display. If your manual describes a similar conflict, close the incompatible source and explicitly reselect the intended CarPlay, AUX, FM, or Bluetooth input.

Distinguish calls from media

A screen may route phone calls differently from music or navigation prompts. Test music, spoken navigation, and a call separately, then check whether the model has independent call and media-volume controls. Do not assume that working call audio proves that media audio uses the same path.

A decision tree for isolating the fault

  1. Can the display make any sound through its own speaker? If no, check mute, speaker selection, display volume, restart, and the model’s local test. If yes, continue.
  2. Which route is intended for the car? Use the model manual to choose AUX, FM, or Bluetooth; do not switch routes at random.
  3. Does the car show the matching input? Select AUX for a cable, FM radio for a transmitter, or Bluetooth media for a Bluetooth route.
  4. Can a second source use that same car input? A second device on AUX or another Bluetooth source helps separate a stereo-input fault from a display-output fault.
  5. Does another app play? If yes, investigate the silent app or source conflict. If no, continue checking the route and connection.
  6. Did a restart or re-pair restore sound? Note the working arrangement so the same devices and input are selected next time.

This sequence prevents a common mistake: replacing a cable when the stereo is on FM, or changing an FM frequency when the display is actually configured for Bluetooth.

What to reset, and what a reset erases

Use the least destructive action first: adjust volume, select the correct source, reseat or test the cable, change to a clear FM frequency, restart, then re-pair Bluetooth. A factory reset belongs at the end and only when the screen’s instructions recommend it. It may erase saved pairings, custom FM frequencies, language settings, and other preferences. Before resetting, write down the current route and settings and make sure you know how to pair the phone again.

If the screen remains silent on its built-in speaker and on every supported output after the documented checks, contact the display manufacturer or seller with the exact model, connection method, and tests already completed. Give the vehicle make, model year, stereo input used, and whether another device works on that input. Those details help support staff distinguish a failed output from an installation or source-selection error.

How the four routes differ in practice

Question Built-in speaker AUX FM transmitter Bluetooth
Does it use the vehicle speakers? No; sound comes from the display Yes, through the stereo’s AUX input Yes, through the car’s FM radio Usually, when the stereo is the selected media destination; the exact arrangement is model-specific
Required vehicle feature None AUX input FM radio Bluetooth media support in the intended pairing arrangement
Main setup check Speaker output and display volume Both plugs and AUX source Identical, clear frequency on display and radio Correct pairing and media destination
Interference risk Not applicable to the car radio Physical cable or input faults Radio interference can vary by location Pairing, competing devices, or wireless connection conflicts
Universal quality or latency ranking Not established by the cited manufacturer guidance Not established Not established Not established

The practical choice is the route your hardware supports reliably. The available guidance does not establish a universal sound-quality or latency winner, so select based on the vehicle input, installation complexity, and susceptibility to the specific fault you can control.

Common mistakes that prolong the diagnosis

  • Assuming the CarPlay screen is the car’s audio source: the interface can be visible while the stereo remains on FM, radio, or another Bluetooth device.
  • Using one volume control: display, phone, and stereo levels can be independent.
  • Changing several things at once: you lose the clue that identifies the failed stage. Change one setting, test, and record the result.
  • Using an AUX cable without an AUX input: verify both physical ports before buying a replacement.
  • Choosing a “universal” FM frequency: frequencies must match and be clear at the vehicle’s location.
  • Pairing every nearby Bluetooth device: extra remembered devices can become the unintended media destination.
  • Applying another vehicle’s menu path: Ford, Toyota, and other manufacturers document vehicle-specific behavior; follow your own manual’s labels.
  • Factory-resetting too early: a reset can erase working settings without repairing a failed cable, input, transmitter, or speaker.

When to stop troubleshooting at home

Escalate when the display fails a model-supported local audio test, a known-good cable and AUX input still produce no output, the FM transmitter cannot be heard on any clear matched frequency, or Bluetooth repeatedly fails after the documented re-pairing process. Also seek support when sound works only intermittently and changes with movement, which can indicate a loose port or power connection. Provide the exact model and firmware if shown, the iPhone model and software version, the vehicle and stereo, the selected route, and the result of each test. Do not claim a guaranteed repair until the manufacturer identifies the failed component or configuration.
