If “Rambler” will not install, appear, or produce text, first determine which product you have. Google’s official Rambler voice feature is documented for Pixel 11 series phones running the current Gboard. “Pixel Rambler” or “PixelBoard” on another Android phone is an unofficial modified Gboard package, and installing its APK is only part of the setup. The checks below separate those two cases so you do not apply Pixel 11 instructions to a port, or sideload a port when the official feature is available.
Identify the Rambler you are troubleshooting
Open your keyboard’s app information or the installation file you used and establish which route you took:
- Official Rambler: Google’s feature inside Gboard on a Pixel 11 series device. Google documents current Gboard, Gboard as the default keyboard, microphone access, and internet connectivity for the complete feature set.
- PixelBoard port: An unofficial, modified Gboard APK intended to bring Rambler-like functionality to other Android phones. Its project documentation describes either a prebuilt stable APK or a patch bundle applied to a stock Gboard APK.
Community posts use “PixelBoard not installing,” “Rambler not showing up,” and “Gboard Rambler not working” for several different failures. Those phrases do not identify the cause. The active keyboard, the Voice typing selection, permissions, the release method, and network state all matter.

If any row is false, fix that row before clearing data or reinstalling. An APK can be present on the phone while the keyboard remains disabled or another keyboard remains active.

Fix an official Rambler installation on a Pixel 11
1. Update Gboard and make it the active keyboard
- Open any app with a text field.
- Use the keyboard switcher and select Gboard. If Gboard is not listed, enable it in Android’s on-screen keyboard settings.
- Check that Gboard is current, then set it as the default keyboard if another input method is selected.
Rambler belongs to Gboard. Installing or updating a different keyboard cannot make the Rambler option appear in Gboard’s settings.
2. Select Rambler in Voice typing
- Open Gboard settings from the keyboard toolbar or Android’s Gboard app information.
- Choose Voice typing.
- Select Rambler.
If Rambler is absent, return to the first step and verify both the device model and the active Gboard version. Google’s documented eligibility is the Pixel 11 series; the available documentation does not establish a universal fix for a missing option on other devices or configurations.
3. Grant the microphone permission Gboard needs
- Open Android Settings and go to Gboard’s app permissions.
- Allow Microphone.
- Choose Allow only while using the app, the permission state specified in Google’s Rambler guidance.
A denied permission can make voice capture fail even when the Rambler switch is visible. On a port, apply this check to the package that is selected as the keyboard, not automatically to the ordinary Gboard package.

Rambler is not a live word-by-word transcript. Start capture, speak, tap Done, and wait for the processed text to be inserted. Seeing no words while you are still speaking is expected and is not, by itself, an installation failure.
Full Rambler features require internet access. Google says basic cleanup, punctuation, and capitalization remain available offline. If the connection drops, a Retry button appears after you speak; use it to process the input with the limited offline behavior. A blocked connection can therefore reduce features without preventing every form of text output.
Install and activate the PixelBoard port safely
PixelBoard is not an official Google app. It modifies Gboard, so its compatibility and continued operation are not guaranteed. Android Central reported on October 12, 2026, that modified APKs carry security and privacy risks and that a future Gboard or server-side change could break the workaround. Read that warning before enabling a sideloaded keyboard, especially on a phone used for passwords, banking, or work data.

Use the project’s current release instructions
PixelBoard’s README describes two routes: install the project’s stable APK, or patch a stock Gboard APK with the project’s patch bundle. Release names, package files, and file sizes are mutable. Use the project page’s current files and method rather than relying on an old version number copied from a forum post.
- Choose either the stable APK route or the patch-bundle route documented for the release you downloaded. Do not mix files from different releases.
- Complete Android’s install-permission prompt if the source you used requires it, and verify that installation finishes without an Android package error.
- Open Android’s on-screen keyboard settings and enable PixelBoard. Installing the APK does not enable it automatically.
- In the same keyboard settings, select PixelBoard as the active input method.
- Open PixelBoard’s keyboard settings, go to Voice typing, and select Rambler if the release exposes that option.
- Open a text field and confirm that the PixelBoard keyboard, rather than Gboard or another keyboard, is displayed before testing voice capture.
If the project provides a patch-specific prerequisite, follow that release’s README exactly. The documentation available for this guide does not establish one universal installation command or a single compatible Android version, so an old command or APK should not be treated as a timeless recipe.
Diagnose the failure by its symptom
“The APK will not install”
- Confirm that you downloaded the release intended for your installation route. A patched package and a stable APK are not interchangeable.
- Remove only a conflicting, older PixelBoard installation if the project’s instructions require it, and note that removing a keyboard changes your available input methods.
- Check Android’s package-installer message, but do not infer malware, incompatibility, or a Google block from an error alone. The cited sources do not prove any of those causes for a particular message.
- Recheck the project’s current release files. Mutable release metadata means a forum attachment or mirrored APK may no longer match the README.
If the official Pixel 11 route is what you intended, stop troubleshooting the port and update Gboard through the normal supported channel instead.
“PixelBoard installed, but it does not show up”
- Open Android’s on-screen keyboard settings and enable PixelBoard.
- Select PixelBoard as the current input method.
- Tap a text field and use the keyboard switcher to verify the selected package.
- Only after those checks, open PixelBoard’s settings and look under Voice typing for Rambler.
An installed-but-disabled keyboard is a setup state, not evidence that the APK failed to install.
“Rambler is not listed”
For official Gboard, verify Pixel 11 eligibility, the latest Gboard, and Gboard as the active keyboard, then follow Gboard > Settings > Voice typing > Rambler. For PixelBoard, use the corresponding path inside PixelBoard’s settings. If the item remains absent, record whether you used the stable APK or patch bundle and which release; the available project documentation does not promise the same menu on every build.

“Rambler activates, but no text is inserted”
- Grant the microphone permission to the active keyboard package.
- Check the network connection if you expect full features.
- Speak, tap Done, and wait. Do not judge the result from the absence of live words during capture.
- If a Retry button appears after a connection interruption, tap it and allow the offline processing to finish.
Official offline processing is limited to basic cleanup, punctuation, and capitalization. Advanced rewrites and conversational editing require connectivity, so a reduced result offline is expected rather than proof of a broken microphone.

“The keyboard crashes or will not open”
For an official Gboard problem, use Google’s general app sequence:
- Restart the phone and install available app or system updates.
- Open Android app settings, force-stop Gboard, then try the keyboard again.
- Clear Gboard’s cache and retest.
Clearing app data or uninstalling is more disruptive: it can erase saved app data and reset keyboard preferences. Treat those actions as later steps, explain the data-loss risk to yourself, and make sure you know how to restore a working keyboard before removing the current one. These are general app measures, not a PixelBoard-specific diagnosis.
For a PixelBoard crash, first capture the device model, Android version, PixelBoard release, and whether you used the stable APK or patch bundle. The project’s maintainer is the relevant escalation path for a failure confined to that unofficial package.

Verify the package you are actually using
It is easy to grant permission to ordinary Gboard while typing with PixelBoard, or to select PixelBoard in settings and then switch back to Gboard from the keyboard picker. Check the keyboard name shown on the keys immediately before a test. Then open that same package’s app-permission page. This single cross-check prevents a common loop in which every setting looks correct in the wrong application.
Separate capture failure from processing failure
There are two distinct stages: the microphone must record your speech, and Rambler must process the submitted audio into text. If the microphone indicator never appears or permission is denied, troubleshoot access first. If recording completes but text arrives only after tapping Done, that timing is expected. If text still does not arrive, check connectivity and use Retry when offered before repeating the installation.
Keep a recovery keyboard
Before replacing or disabling your only working keyboard, confirm that another input method remains enabled. A sideloaded keyboard can stop opening after an update or configuration change. A backup lets you enter passwords, search settings, download a replacement, and report the failure without being locked out of text input.

Choose the supported route or the port

If your phone is a supported Pixel 11 and you do not need a port, the official route has the clearer eligibility and support boundary. If you deliberately use PixelBoard, keep a second keyboard available so you can recover if the modified package stops opening.
Privacy and data handling
Google’s Pixel Phone Help says: “When you use Rambler, your text, audio input, and your corrections to voice output will be temporarily processed by Google.” Google also says that this information is not saved, stored, or shared and is deleted after delivery. That statement describes Google’s official service; it should not be extended to an unofficial PixelBoard build or to a third-party distribution source.
A modified keyboard can potentially see what you type because keyboards handle text input. Install only from a source you trust, review the package and release you are using, and avoid entering sensitive information until you have decided that the port’s security risk is acceptable. A future Gboard update or server-side change may also disable the workaround without warning.

Support becomes substantially more useful when the report identifies the exact route and state. Include:
- Phone model and Android version.
- Whether the device is a Pixel 11 series phone or another Android model.
- Active keyboard shown when a text field is open.
- Gboard or PixelBoard version, and for PixelBoard whether the stable APK or patch bundle was used.
- The exact stage that fails: installation, enabling the keyboard, selecting Rambler, microphone capture, submission after tapping Done, or text insertion.
- Whether microphone permission is set to “Allow only while using the app.”
- Whether the phone was online and whether a Retry button appeared.
- The complete error text, without assuming that it proves a particular cause.
For supported Gboard, use Google’s support options after confirming the device, keyboard, permission, and connectivity requirements. For a failure limited to PixelBoard, send the same details to the project maintainer and identify the release and installation method.

- Identify official Pixel 11 Rambler versus PixelBoard.
- Confirm the intended keyboard is enabled and selected.
- Choose Rambler under that keyboard’s Voice typing settings.
- Grant microphone access to the active keyboard package.
- Test online, tap Done, and wait for insertion rather than expecting live transcription.
- Use Retry after a connection drop; expect only limited cleanup, punctuation, and capitalization offline on official Rambler.
- Restart, update, force-stop, and clear cache before considering data clearing or uninstalling.
- For PixelBoard, follow the current release README and retain a backup keyboard.
- Escalate with the device, Android version, package, release, route, and exact error.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Rambler show words while I am speaking?
No. Rambler processes the recording after you tap Done. A lack of live word-by-word text is expected; wait for insertion after submission.

Can I use official Rambler on any Android phone?
Google documents the feature for Pixel 11 series devices with current Gboard. PixelBoard is an unofficial alternative with no guaranteed device compatibility.
Why did installing PixelBoard not make it appear in my keyboard list?
