Start by separating the three connection paths. Turn Wi‑Fi off and test mobile data, try a second Wi‑Fi network, and test Bluetooth with another accessory if possible. Those comparisons show whether the fault follows the phone or stays with a carrier, router, network, car, or accessory. Restart the phone before changing settings, then work through only the branch that matches the failure.

Do not treat a connection icon as a complete diagnosis. A phone may be associated with a Wi‑Fi router but still have no internet, or show a Bluetooth pairing without offering calls or music. The goal is to identify the failing link before you erase saved settings or contact the wrong support team.

First, identify which connection is actually failing

A phone can show a Wi‑Fi icon while having no internet access, or appear paired to a Bluetooth device without supporting calls or music through it. Use the tests below before resetting anything.

What you observe Quick comparison Most likely area to investigate
Mobile data fails Turn Wi‑Fi off and check whether cellular data works in a location with signal. Mobile-data setting, signal, coverage, outage, or carrier account
Wi‑Fi will not join Try another Wi‑Fi network and see whether other devices can join the original one. Phone Wi‑Fi configuration, router, network password, or network policy
Wi‑Fi joins but apps cannot get online Check another device on that network and look for a required sign-in page. Internet service, captive portal, router, ISP, or VPN/security software
Bluetooth fails Try a different accessory, and check whether the accessory is discoverable. Pairing state, accessory memory, compatibility, or the accessory itself

Menu names differ by manufacturer and software version. Look for similarly named areas such as Network & internet, Connections, Cellular, Mobile data, or Bluetooth. On a managed work or school phone, do not remove a required configuration without asking the organization’s IT administrator.

Use four comparisons throughout troubleshooting: cellular versus Wi‑Fi versus Bluetooth; one network or accessory versus all; whether other devices work in the same place; and whether the failure follows the phone to another place. Write down each result. “Works on a different network” is more useful to support staff than simply reporting that the phone is broken.

Run the safe checks that apply to every connection

Restart the phone

Power the phone off completely, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again. This clears temporary radio and network-service faults without deleting saved networks or personal data. After the restart, test one connection at a time rather than switching several settings at once.

Check for an obvious interruption

  • Move to a location where you normally receive cellular signal.
  • Stay close to the Wi‑Fi router for the first test.
  • Keep a Bluetooth accessory nearby and charged.
  • Confirm that the accessory is not already connected to another phone, tablet, or computer.
  • Check that you have not accidentally enabled airplane mode or disabled a radio from a quick-settings panel.

Use airplane mode as a radio refresh

Turn airplane mode on, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it off. Retest mobile data, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth separately. This is especially useful when a phone shows signal but data or pairing services have stopped responding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are on a phone or video call, avoid resetting the connection during the call: Google’s Android guidance warns that a connection reset ends the call. Finish the call first or accept that it may disconnect.

Do not change several variables at once

Make one change, test, and record what happened. For example, first test mobile data with Wi‑Fi off; then test a different location. If you toggle radios, reset networks, change a VPN, and reboot a router together, you will not know which device or service actually caused the symptom.

Fix mobile data that will not connect

1. Confirm mobile data is enabled

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open Network & internet, Connections, Cellular, or Mobile data.
  3. Turn mobile or cellular data on.
  4. If it was already on, turn it off, wait several seconds, and turn it on again.

Android menu paths vary substantially between manufacturers. Use the Settings search box for “mobile data” or “cellular” if the option is not visible. On some phones, a quick-settings tile controls the same setting; verify it in Settings if the tile appears active but apps remain offline.

2. Test cellular service with Wi‑Fi disabled

Temporarily turn Wi‑Fi off so the phone cannot use the wireless network. Look for a cellular data indicator such as LTE, 4G, 5G, or another carrier-specific symbol. If no usable indicator appears, the location may have weak signal or no coverage. Go outside or try another location and test again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test a simple web page or another ordinary app after Wi‑Fi is off. If the page loads only after Wi‑Fi is restored, you have not yet proved that cellular data works. A signal indicator alone also does not guarantee data service; it only shows that the phone sees a cellular network.

3. Check whether the failure follows you

Mobile data that works in one location but not another usually points to coverage, congestion, or a local carrier outage rather than a damaged phone. If data fails in multiple locations after the settings and airplane-mode checks, contact the mobile service provider. Ask the provider to check service status and the line or account; do not assume that editing an APN or replacing the SIM is the universal fix.

When contacting the carrier, note the locations tested, approximate times, the data indicator shown, and whether calls and text messages still work. Those details help distinguish a local coverage problem from a broader service or account problem.

4. Keep the symptom narrow

If calls and text messages work but data does not, continue with mobile-data settings and carrier support. If the phone has no cellular signal at all, the carrier needs to check coverage or service before you make deeper device changes. A factory reset is not an appropriate first response to a cellular outage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not present APN edits, SIM replacement, or a device reset as universal first steps. Those actions are provider- and device-specific, can remove working settings, and should be considered only when the carrier or phone maker gives instructions for your exact model and service.

Fix Wi‑Fi that will not connect or has no internet

1. Verify the basics on the phone

  1. Open Settings > Wi‑Fi (or Settings > Network & internet > Internet on many Android phones).
  2. Turn Wi‑Fi on.
  3. Select the intended network, not a similarly named neighbor or extender.
  4. Enter the password carefully and remain close enough to the router for the first attempt.

If the network is public, a password may not be enough. Open a browser after joining and look for a sign-in or terms-and-conditions page. Until that page is completed, the phone can report that it is connected to Wi‑Fi while internet access remains blocked. Hotels, airports, libraries, cafés, and workplaces commonly require this extra step.

2. Compare another device and another network

Connect a second phone or computer to the same network. If several devices cannot get online there, the problem is probably the router, internet service, or network host. If other devices work but your phone does not, try your phone on a different Wi‑Fi network. A phone that fails on every network needs phone-maker support; a phone that works elsewhere points back to the original network.

Try the comparison in both directions: bring a known-working device to the problem network, and bring the affected phone to a network that normally works. This separates a phone-wide failure from a single router, password, captive portal, access-control rule, or network outage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Restart a home router correctly

Follow the router maker’s shutdown instructions. Google’s Android guidance describes unplugging the router, waiting about 30 seconds, plugging it back in, and allowing it to finish restarting before testing the phone. Wait for the router’s normal status lights and complete startup; do not repeatedly unplug it during startup, because that can make diagnosis harder.

If several devices still fail after the restart, the internet service provider or network host is the right contact. Have the router status, affected devices, and whether the restart changed anything ready for the support representative.

4. Check VPN or security software on iPhone and iPad

On an iPhone or iPad, VPN, filtering, or security software can interfere with joining a network or reaching the internet. If such software is installed, follow Apple’s troubleshooting approach: remove or disable it temporarily, restart the device, and test again. If the connection returns and the software is required, contact its provider rather than leaving protection disabled. On an employer- or school-managed device, use the organization’s IT process before removing a profile or VPN.

5. Distinguish “cannot join” from “no internet”

  • Cannot join: the password, saved network entry, signal strength, router access control, or phone Wi‑Fi settings may be at fault.
  • Joined, no internet: investigate a captive-portal sign-in, router or ISP outage, DNS/VPN filtering, or the network’s own restrictions.
  • Only one app fails: the Wi‑Fi link may be healthy; check that app’s service status or permissions instead of resetting all networking.

Do not assume that forgetting and rejoining a network will repair an ISP outage. It may help with a stale saved password or profile, but it cannot restore internet service when every device on the network is offline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix Bluetooth pairing and connection failures

Bluetooth is a two-device process. Both the phone and the accessory must have Bluetooth enabled, be within range, and agree on a pairing state. The accessory’s manual takes priority because pairing modes and supported features differ.

1. Refresh both devices

  1. Turn Bluetooth off and on in the phone’s Settings.
  2. Restart the phone.
  3. Power the accessory off and on, or restart it using its manual.
  4. Keep the accessory close, charged, and disconnected from other devices while pairing.

A powered-on accessory may still be unavailable if it is already maintaining a connection with another phone, tablet, or computer. Disconnect it there first, then begin a new pairing attempt.

2. Put the accessory into discoverable mode

Many headphones, speakers, watches, and vehicle systems are invisible until a dedicated pairing button or menu is used. Follow the accessory or vehicle manual, then open the phone’s Bluetooth device list and refresh it. A device that is merely powered on may not be discoverable.

Keep the accessory nearby during this step and allow the phone time to populate the list. If the manual requires a pairing code, confirmation prompt, or an on-screen approval, complete it on both devices rather than dismissing the request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Remove stale pairings and pair again

  1. In the phone’s saved Bluetooth devices, select the accessory and choose Forget, Unpair, or a similarly named option.
  2. If the accessory stores several phones, clear its old entries according to its manual.
  3. For a car, also delete old phone entries from the car’s Bluetooth memory using the vehicle manual.
  4. Put the accessory back into pairing mode and select it from the phone’s refreshed list.

Removing a stale entry is different from deleting every Bluetooth setting on the phone. Start with the one accessory that fails so you do not lose working connections unnecessarily. If the phone lists several entries with similar names, use the model identifier in the accessory manual to select the correct one.

4. Check what the connection is allowed to do

For a paired car or audio device, open its saved Bluetooth-device settings and check whether Media audio and Phone audio are enabled when those options are offered. Some vehicles support calls but not music, or music but not every phone feature. Do not assume that every Bluetooth accessory supports every profile.

“Paired” means the devices remember each other; it does not guarantee that the accessory supports the feature you want. Check the vehicle or accessory documentation when calls, media, or another function is missing despite a successful pairing.

5. Isolate the accessory

If other Bluetooth accessories connect normally and only one fails, follow that accessory’s or vehicle’s manual and contact its manufacturer if pairing still fails. If no accessory can pair after restarting and refreshing Bluetooth, the phone maker is the more appropriate support channel. Custom Android versions may require manufacturer-specific Bluetooth instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to reset network settings

A network reset is a later troubleshooting step, not a first reaction. Apple says this reset removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, VPN settings, and APN settings. You will need to reconnect to networks and re-enter credentials afterward.

Before resetting

  • Record Wi‑Fi passwords you will need.
  • Make sure you know any work or school network instructions.
  • Finish or avoid important calls, because a connection reset can end an active call.
  • Try the targeted mobile, Wi‑Fi, or Bluetooth checks above first.
  • Confirm that the problem is not limited to one router, carrier location, or accessory.

A reset can clear a damaged or conflicting saved configuration, but it cannot repair a carrier outage, restore a failed router, or make an incompatible Bluetooth accessory support a missing feature. Treat it as a way to remove saved network state, not as a universal repair.

Find the reset option

On many iPhones, the path is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Android labels vary; search Settings for Reset network settings, or look under System > Reset options or a manufacturer’s equivalent. Read the confirmation screen carefully so you choose a network reset rather than a factory reset.

After the reset, restart if prompted, reconnect to Wi‑Fi, test mobile data with Wi‑Fi off, and pair only the Bluetooth accessory you are diagnosing. If the same failure returns immediately, further resets are unlikely to help; use the escalation path below.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Trusting the Wi‑Fi icon: association with a router does not prove that the router has internet access.
  • Changing several settings simultaneously: make one change, retest, and note the result so you know which branch solved or changed the symptom.
  • Editing APN values without carrier instructions: APN settings are provider-specific and are not a universal remedy.
  • Factory-resetting too soon: a reset erases personal data and does not fix a carrier outage, broken router, or incompatible accessory.
  • Repeating a failed pairing attempt: clear the stale phone or car entry, return the accessory to discoverable mode, and pair from a clean list.
  • Ignoring managed-device policy: enterprise profiles, VPNs, and certificates may be required for work or school access.
  • Assuming “paired” means “fully supported”: Bluetooth features depend on the accessory and vehicle capabilities.
  • Resetting during a call: a connection reset can end a phone or video call.

Use the result of each test to narrow the fault

The most useful diagnosis is the one that changes location, network, or accessory while leaving the phone otherwise unchanged. Mobile data that fails everywhere after settings checks belongs with the carrier. A Wi‑Fi problem affecting many devices belongs with the router, ISP, or network host. Wi‑Fi failure on every network belongs with the phone maker. A single Bluetooth failure belongs with that accessory or vehicle. Keeping those boundaries clear avoids unnecessary resets, replacement purchases, and loss of saved settings.

There is no universal requirement to buy a new phone, router, accessory, or repair kit at this stage. Basic settings checks and controlled comparisons should come first. Only the carrier, ISP, phone maker, network administrator, or accessory manufacturer can confirm a service, policy, hardware, or compatibility fault specific to your setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my phone show Wi‑Fi but say there is no internet?

The phone may be connected to the router without the router having working internet service. On a public network, complete the browser sign-in or terms page. Check another device on the same network; if several devices are offline, restart the router and contact the ISP or network host.

How can I tell whether mobile data or Wi‑Fi is the problem?

Turn Wi‑Fi off and test a web page or app in a location where the phone has cellular signal. Then turn Wi‑Fi back on and test a second network if possible. If cellular works but one Wi‑Fi network fails, investigate that network; if cellular fails in multiple locations, contact the carrier.

Should I edit APN settings or replace my SIM card?

Not as a universal first step. APN values and SIM procedures are provider- and device-specific. Complete the mobile-data, airplane-mode, signal, and location checks first, then follow instructions from your carrier or phone maker for your exact service.

What should I do if Bluetooth says paired but music or calls do not work?

Open the saved Bluetooth-device settings and check whether Media audio and Phone audio are enabled when those options are available. The vehicle or accessory may support only some features, so consult its manual rather than assuming every Bluetooth profile is supported.

Why can’t my phone find my headphones or car?

Put the accessory into its dedicated pairing or discoverable mode, keep it charged and nearby, and disconnect it from other devices. Remove its stale entry from the phone, clear old phone entries from a car’s memory if needed, and pair again according to the accessory or vehicle manual.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I reset network settings?

Use a network reset only after targeted mobile, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth checks fail. It removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords plus cellular, VPN, and APN settings, so record credentials and follow work or school IT instructions first.

Who should I contact if no Wi‑Fi network works on my phone?

If the phone cannot connect to any Wi‑Fi network while other devices work normally, contact the phone manufacturer. If several devices fail on one network, contact the ISP, network host, or network administrator instead.

Can a factory reset fix a phone that has no mobile data?

It is not an appropriate first response. A factory reset will not fix a carrier outage, coverage problem, router failure, or incompatible Bluetooth accessory and can erase personal data. Use the relevant support channel after the basic checks.

The Bottom Line

Separate mobile data, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth first, then compare another location, network, device, or accessory. Restart before resetting, keep Wi‑Fi off when testing cellular data, verify captive-portal access, and put Bluetooth accessories into discoverable mode. Reset network settings only after simpler checks and only when you are ready to re-enter saved credentials. The failure pattern tells you whether to contact the carrier, ISP or network host, phone maker, accessory manufacturer, or administrator.
