There is no single reset that recalibrates every phone sensor. The right fix depends on what stopped working—call-screen behavior, auto-rotate, compass direction, or another feature—and on your phone’s make and model. Start with a gentle external check, remove anything that could cover the sensor, restart and update the phone, then use a manufacturer-supported diagnostic if available.
Identify the affected sensor and symptom
Before troubleshooting, note the phone’s make, model, operating-system version, and when the issue began. A recent drop, liquid exposure, repair, update, or change of case or screen protector can help narrow down the cause.
- Proximity sensor: Detects a nearby object and commonly turns the display off when you hold the phone to your face during a call. Speakerphone or Bluetooth use can affect expected behavior. Samsung explains how proximity behavior and troubleshooting can vary by device.
- Accelerometer and geomagnetic field sensor: Their readings can be used together to determine orientation and magnetic direction. A problem with rotation does not necessarily mean the compass function is also faulty. Android Developers describes position sensors and their roles.
- Touchscreen: An unresponsive or erratic screen is not automatically a sensor failure. Google’s Android touchscreen troubleshooting covers screen-specific checks such as cleaning, removing accessories, and restarting.
Some phones place the proximity sensor under the display. Samsung notes that a faint blink near the top of certain models can be normal, rather than evidence of a fault.

Try safe checks before looking for a reset
1. Clean the outside of the phone
Use a clean, soft cloth on the front of the device, especially around the top edge. Xiaomi also recommends cleaning the top and checking that nothing is stuck in openings or the gap between the frame and screen. Do not put a pin, needle, or other tool into an opening.

2. Remove anything that could cover the sensor
Temporarily take off the case and, if practical, remove a sticker or screen protector that might overlap the sensor area. Test the affected feature briefly without the accessory. If it starts working, check whether the accessory is misaligned or unsuitable for that phone before putting it back.
3. Update and restart
Install available phone software updates and, where relevant, updates for the affected app. Then restart the phone and test the same feature again. Samsung and Xiaomi include updates among their troubleshooting steps. A restart is a low-risk check, but it does not prove that the sensor is healthy or perform a universal recalibration.

4. Use a diagnostic provided for your phone
On a supported Samsung phone, open Samsung Members, choose Get help, open View tests under Diagnostics, and select Proximity recognition. Follow the instructions shown on screen. The menu and available tests can vary by model and software version; see Samsung’s proximity-sensor support instructions.
Apple’s diagnostics mode is available on listed supported devices, including iPhone 14 models and later, and requires Wi-Fi. Apple says diagnostics can identify potential hardware or software issues; a detected issue may require service. Eligibility and steps can change, so follow Apple’s current instructions for using diagnostics mode with iPhone and iPad.

Can you calibrate or reset a phone sensor?
Not through one universal procedure. The official guidance described here focuses on clearing obstructions, removing accessories, updating or restarting the phone, and running supported diagnostics. Android’s sensor documentation explains how applications use sensor readings; it does not establish a single user-facing reset for every phone.
Compass calibration motions or service menus should be used only when the manufacturer documents them for your exact model. Avoid disabling sensors through developer settings, installing unknown calibration apps, clearing system data, factory-resetting the phone, or flashing firmware as first-line fixes. These actions are not established as general sensor repairs and can cause additional problems or erase data.

When a sensor problem needs service
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if a supported diagnostic reports a fault, the problem persists after the basic checks, or the phone has been dropped, exposed to liquid, or recently repaired. Do not open the phone or replace a sensor based on symptoms alone: placement, parts, and repair procedures are model-specific.
For example, Apple’s iPhone 15 Repair Manual includes troubleshooting topics for ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, and compass issues. That is model-specific guidance, not a universal repair procedure. See the iPhone 15 Repair Manual and use repair information for the exact phone model.
