If a PC game does nothing when you click Play, briefly opens and closes, or returns to the launcher, start with a restart, the launcher’s file-repair option, and checks for Windows, graphics-driver, and game updates. Then compare your PC with the game’s minimum requirements. The right next step depends on the exact symptom; these checks are a safe starting sequence, not a diagnosis for every game.
First, identify what happens when you launch the game
Note whether clicking Play has no visible effect, the launcher shows “Preparing to Launch” and then returns to idle, the game window appears and closes, an error message appears, or the display goes blank or flickers. Record the exact error wording and when it appears. These symptoms can have different causes, so an error code or a consistent point of failure is useful when choosing the next check.
Try the low-risk checks first
- Restart Windows. Restart the PC, then try launching the game again. Steam’s general troubleshooting guide recommends beginning its checks after a fresh restart.
- Check the game’s files in its launcher. If the launcher provides a verify, repair, or file-integrity option, run it and retry. On Steam, use the game’s file integrity check; Steam lists “Verify integrity of game files” among its troubleshooting steps. Other launchers may use different labels and procedures, so follow that publisher’s support instructions rather than assuming Steam’s steps apply.
- Install available Windows updates and check the game’s requirements. Compare your PC with the minimum requirements listed for the specific game. A system that is at or below the requirements may not be able to launch it. Requirements checks help identify a possible shortfall; they do not establish that hardware is defective.
- Check for a graphics-driver update. If an update is appropriate for your PC, get it from the relevant PC or graphics-card manufacturer. An outdated driver is one possibility to check, not proof of the cause.
Steam’s advice is guidance for Steam launch problems, including games that remain at “Preparing to Launch”; it is not a diagnosis or guarantee for every title or launcher. See Steam Support’s game-launch troubleshooting guide.
If the game is listed as a Windows app, try Repair
Windows offers repair controls for some apps. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the game if it appears, open Advanced options, and choose Repair if that option is available. Microsoft notes that not all apps expose these controls.

If Repair is unavailable or does not help, Windows may offer Reset in the same area. Reset is app-specific and may affect local settings or data. Check the game or launcher publisher’s support guidance before using it if you are unsure what could be lost. Microsoft explains these options in Repair apps and programs in Windows.
Use a clean boot only to test for background conflicts
If the basic checks fail, a clean boot can help determine whether a background program or service is interfering. Microsoft describes it as starting Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs, so you can test whether the game launches in that environment.

Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions carefully, especially on a managed or networked PC. Some functionality may be temporarily unavailable while startup items or services are disabled. If the game works, re-enable items systematically to identify the conflict, then restore normal startup. A clean boot is an escalation step, not a general fix to leave in place. Display flicker calls for a separate check; it does not explain every game that fails to launch. When the screen flickers, open Task Manager and observe whether it flickers too. Microsoft says that if Task Manager flickers, a display driver is likely involved; if Task Manager does not flicker, an incompatible app may be involved. This is a clue for a flickering display, not a universal launch-failure test.

Microsoft also notes that pressing Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B may reset the graphics driver and fix some display problems. Use this only as a display troubleshooting step, not as a general solution for a game that will not open. Details are in Microsoft’s screen-flickering guide.

- The exact error message or code, or a description of what happens after clicking Play.
- The game title and launcher you use.
- Your Windows version and relevant PC specifications, such as processor, graphics hardware, and memory.
- Recent changes, such as a Windows or driver update, a game patch, or newly installed software.
- Which checks you have already tried and what happened afterward.
Without a specific game, launcher, error, and PC configuration, there is no reliable way to determine whether the cause is a runtime, anti-cheat component, account, server, patch, driver, or hardware shortfall. Avoid buying replacement hardware unless the game’s requirements reveal a specific gap or a component fault has been confirmed.
