Start by separating the problem into two questions: does Windows detect the controller at all? and if it does, does the game or launcher accept its input? If Windows cannot see it, changing in-game settings will not help; check power, pairing, USB connectivity, and drivers. If Windows sees it but one game does not respond, focus on that game’s supported input mode and launcher configuration.
This guide covers wired USB and Bluetooth controllers on Windows 10 and Windows 11, with separate steps for Steam. Exact pairing buttons, connector types, and game menus vary by controller and model, so use the maker’s instructions for model-specific actions.
First, identify which layer is failing
Use this quick split before replacing hardware or reinstalling a game:
- Windows does not show the controller: troubleshoot power, cable or Bluetooth pairing, USB ports, and device drivers.
- Windows shows the controller, but one game fails: check that game’s controller support, input mode, and launcher behavior.
- The controller disconnects everywhere: suspect the cable, USB port, Bluetooth radio, interference, or the controller itself.
- It works in other games but not this one: keep the controller and Windows setup; investigate the game or launcher first.
Microsoft describes the first condition simply: “The device isn’t detected when you connect it.” Follow its hardware guidance at Add a hardware device to a Windows device.

Windows detection means the operating system has enumerated some hardware; it does not guarantee that every button, vibration feature, or input protocol is supported by a particular game. Conversely, a game menu is not a reliable test of USB or Bluetooth hardware. Check Windows first, then test software.
Run a five-minute isolation check
- Turn the controller on and charge it sufficiently. For a wired controller, connect it directly to the PC rather than through a hub or dock.
- Restart the controller by powering it off and on. If it is wireless, restart Bluetooth on the PC as well.
- Check Windows independently of the game. Open Device Manager and look for the controller or an entry with a warning icon under relevant device categories. Device category names can vary, so inspect recently added or unknown devices as well as entries that mention USB, Bluetooth, or the controller maker.
- Try a second USB port for a wired controller, or remove and pair the Bluetooth controller again.
- Test a different game only after Windows recognizes the device. A failure in one title is a different fault domain from a controller missing in Windows.
Write down what changes after each test. If moving the controller to another port fixes it, the original port, hub, or connected device is part of the fault. If no Windows change occurs but another game works, stop changing drivers and move to the game/launcher section. If the controller is not listed anywhere, do not spend time changing button mappings inside a game.
Fix a wired USB controller
Check the cable and connector
A USB cable can provide power while failing to carry data. Use the controller manufacturer’s specified, data-capable cable and confirm that its connector matches the exact controller model. There is no universal controller cable or connector standard that makes any cable interchangeable. A cable that fits physically may still have the wrong connector, wiring, or data capability.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Connect directly to the computer, then try another USB port. Avoid testing through a keyboard, monitor, unpowered hub, or docking station until direct connection works. Valve documents that USB behavior can vary with port choice and other connected devices, including intermittent disconnects; its advice is a troubleshooting check rather than a guarantee for every controller. See Troubleshooting USB Connection and Contention Issues.
Disconnect other unnecessary USB devices temporarily while testing. This is an isolation step, not a claim that every nearby device causes controller failure. If a direct connection is stable but a hub is not, keep the controller on the direct port or troubleshoot the hub separately.
Interpret Windows USB errors
If Windows reports that the last USB device malfunctioned, open Device Manager and inspect entries with a warning icon. Open Properties > Device status and record the error code before changing anything. Microsoft notes that a “USB device not recognized” message can mean the device reported a problem or that its driver has a problem. Its USB-C guidance is at Fix USB-C problems in Windows.

- INSTANT BLUETOOTH ACCESS: Bluetooth dongle adapter receiver for PCs converts non-Bluetooth devices into Bluetooth-capable with simple USB connection
- WIDE COMPATIBILITY: Supports Bluetooth 5.4 and is backwards compatible with Bluetooth 5.3/5.2/5.1/5.0/V4.2/4.0/3.0/2.1/2.0/1.1; ONLY works with Windows 8.1, 10, and 11
- MULTI-DEVICE CONNECTION: Connect up to 6 devices simultaneously; Not compatible with all other operation systems e.g. Mac, Linux, Chrome, Unix, Playstation(PS), Windows 7 and below; Nano bluetooth receiver can be plugged in via any standard USB port
- ENHANCED PERFORMANCE: EDR and BLE technology offers enhanced data rate/transfer speed and low energy consumption
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Not compatible with all other operation systems e.g. Mac, Linux, Chrome, Unix, Playstation(PS), Windows 7 and below; Disable any built-in Bluetooth of the device before use this product, refer to the user manual for detail
- If the controller appears after changing ports, leave it on the working port while you test the game.
- If every port produces the same error, try the controller on another computer if available. A failure that follows the controller points toward its cable or hardware; a failure that stays with one PC points toward USB hardware, firmware, or Windows.
- If Device Manager shows an unknown device, capture the status code and use the computer or controller maker’s support instructions for that exact model. Do not install a random third-party driver utility.
- If the controller repeatedly connects and disconnects, test with only the controller attached, then restore other devices one at a time. This can reveal port contention without assuming a specific cause.
Fix Bluetooth pairing and connection
Confirm that the PC can use Bluetooth
The PC must have a working Bluetooth radio, Bluetooth must be enabled, and the controller must be in its model-specific pairing mode. Microsoft’s paths are:

| Windows 10 | Settings > Devices | Open Bluetooth & other devices, turn Bluetooth on, choose Add Bluetooth or other device, then select Bluetooth. |
Use Microsoft’s Pair a Bluetooth device in Windows instructions for the current screen labels. The button combination that enters pairing mode differs by controller, so consult that model’s manual. Some controllers also offer multiple wireless modes; choose the Bluetooth mode only when the PC is pairing through Bluetooth rather than a proprietary receiver.
Remove and pair again
- In the Bluetooth settings page, select the controller and choose Remove device if it is listed but will not connect.
- Power-cycle the controller, then place it in pairing mode again.
- Choose Add device and pair it while it is close to the PC.
- After pairing, wait for Windows to show it as connected before launching the game.
Check charge, range, and nearby radio conditions. Microsoft says an unshielded USB device connected to a USB 3.0 port can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth. Moving a nearby USB device or receiver is a useful test when wireless performance is sluggish, not proof of the cause. Its broader troubleshooting steps are at Fix Bluetooth problems in Windows.
If pairing succeeds but input stops at a distance, move the controller closer and remove possible obstructions while testing. If it works only immediately after charging, treat battery condition or charge level as a hardware-support question rather than a game setting. Do not assume every wireless controller uses Bluetooth: verify the controller’s documented protocol before buying an adapter.
When Bluetooth controls are missing or disabled
If the Bluetooth switch is absent or grayed out, Windows may not be detecting or enabling the PC’s Bluetooth radio. Check the PC maker’s hardware specifications, physical wireless switch, firmware instructions, and Device Manager. On Windows 11, Microsoft recommends starting the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter in Get Help.
A PC that lacks working built-in Bluetooth can use a USB Bluetooth adapter, but only when the controller itself supports Bluetooth. An adapter cannot repair a USB data-cable fault or make a game support an incompatible input mode. Confirm Windows compatibility and the controller’s protocol before buying one. The adapter is a conditional purchase for adding the missing radio, not a universal controller repair.

Repair the Bluetooth driver only when the wireless layer is the problem
Driver work is appropriate when Bluetooth is missing, the radio has an error in Device Manager, or pairing broke after a driver or Windows update. It is not the first response to a controller that Windows recognizes and that fails in only one game. Microsoft-supported options include:
- Open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click the PC’s Bluetooth adapter, and choose Update driver.
- Check Settings > Windows Update and install applicable updates, then restart.
- If the adapter remains faulty, use Device Manager to uninstall the Bluetooth adapter and restart. Windows can reinstall it during startup.
- If the problem began immediately after a recent driver update, open the adapter’s Properties > Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when that option is available.
Read Microsoft’s complete procedure at Update Bluetooth drivers in Windows. Device Manager can report that the best driver is already installed even when a newer, model-specific package exists; prefer the computer manufacturer’s driver and firmware instructions over generic download sites. Record the original adapter name and error before uninstalling so you can identify the correct device after restart.
When Windows detects the controller but a game does not
Check the game’s supported input mode
Windows detection only proves that the operating system can enumerate the device. The game still has to support that controller’s input style and expose the appropriate buttons. Open the game’s own controller, input, or accessibility settings and verify that controller input is enabled. Some titles expect a particular controller protocol and may not accept every device that Windows lists.
If the controller works in a second game, keep your Windows and hardware setup unchanged while you compare the failing game’s settings. This prevents a game-specific compatibility problem from turning into an unnecessary driver or hardware replacement. Check whether the title is running through a separate launcher, whether it has an input-mode selector, and whether it requires the controller to be connected before startup. Menu labels and requirements vary by game, so use that publisher’s documentation for exact steps.
Steam-specific checks
For a game launched through Steam, open Steam’s controller settings and verify that the controller is listed. Valve’s instructions for its 2015 Steam Controller state that “The Steam Overlay is vital to Steam Controller functionality.” That statement applies to the Steam Controller workflow, not automatically to every third-party gamepad. Valve also documents calibration and input testing from Steam’s controller settings for that device; use those tools when you are troubleshooting that specific Steam Controller.
Valve’s current Steam Controller guidance is at Steam Controller (2026) – Feature & Troubleshooting guide. The older device-specific instructions are at Steam Controller (2015) – Unresponsive / strange input. Keep these two sets of instructions distinct: features and menus can differ between the 2015 and 2026 products.

If Steam does not list the controller at all, return to Windows and connection checks rather than repeatedly calibrating. If Steam lists it but the game does not, compare the game’s controller support and Steam’s per-game configuration. A controller that responds in Steam’s test but not in one title is evidence of a game or launcher boundary.
Non-Steam games added to Steam
Adding a non-Steam game does not guarantee that Steam Input or the Overlay will work. Valve lists several incompatibility cases, including anti-cheat systems, separate launchers that require administrator permissions, missing Overlay support, and games that cannot be added to the Steam library. If the controller responds elsewhere, treat one of these launcher boundaries as a likely explanation and consult the game publisher’s supported-input documentation. Running a launcher with different permissions can also change whether an overlay attaches, so follow the publisher’s supported launch method instead of assuming Steam can bridge every game.
Wired USB versus Bluetooth: choose the right troubleshooting route
| Question | Wired USB | Bluetooth |
|---|---|---|
| First physical check | Data-capable cable, direct connection, and another USB port. | Charge, range, Bluetooth enabled, and model-specific pairing mode. |
| Windows evidence | Device Manager USB or unknown-device entry; inspect Device status and error code. | Bluetooth radio and paired-device status; missing or disabled controls suggest a radio, driver, or firmware issue. |
| Extra hardware requirement | A compatible data cable and working USB port. | A built-in Bluetooth radio or a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter. |
| Useful isolation test | Try another port and, if possible, another computer. | Remove and re-pair; test range and nearby USB-device interference. |
The issue follows the controller when the same failure occurs on another computer. It follows the PC when another known-working controller fails there. These tests do not prove which internal component failed, but they tell you which support path to pursue. Compare the protocol as well as the connector: a Bluetooth adapter helps only a Bluetooth-capable controller, while a data cable helps only a controller designed for wired USB input.
Common symptoms and the next action
| Symptom | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| No lights, no pairing, no Windows entry | Charge or power the controller, then check the model’s pairing or wired-power procedure. |
| Power is present but USB is not detected | Use a known data-capable cable, connect directly, try another port, and inspect Device Manager status. |
| Bluetooth appears but will not connect | Remove the saved device, restart both sides, and pair again close to the PC. |
| Bluetooth switch missing | Check Bluetooth hardware, firmware, and adapter drivers; run the Windows 11 Get Help troubleshooter. |
| Windows sees it but one game ignores it | Verify the game’s supported input mode and launcher-specific controller settings. |
| Input works, then disconnects during play | For USB, test another port and remove competing devices; for Bluetooth, check charge, range, and possible USB 3.0 interference. |
| Steam test works but a non-Steam game fails | Check anti-cheat, separate-launcher permissions, Overlay support, and the game’s own controller documentation. |
| Failure occurs on two computers | Use the maker’s support process for the exact cable, connector, wireless protocol, or controller hardware. |
What to record before contacting support
Save the controller model, connection method, Windows version, whether the controller appears in Device Manager or Bluetooth settings, any Device status error code, the USB port or adapter used, and whether another computer or game works. Note whether the problem began after a Windows or driver update. This information keeps support from repeating connection checks and helps distinguish a controller fault from a PC-specific fault.
Windows version context
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That date does not prove that an older PC or controller cannot work, but it does mean you should account for the computer’s support status when evaluating missing driver or firmware updates. Windows 11 and Windows 10 also use different Bluetooth settings paths, so follow the path for the version actually installed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen replacement is justified
Replace a cable only after confirming that the controller requires that connector and that the replacement carries data, not just power. Consider a Bluetooth adapter only when the PC lacks working Bluetooth and the controller supports Bluetooth. Consider replacing the controller only after it fails with a known-good cable or compatible Bluetooth connection on more than one computer, or after the manufacturer’s support process identifies a hardware fault.

Do not buy a new controller to solve a game-only failure. A controller that Windows detects and that works in other games is evidence for investigating the title, launcher, anti-cheat, Overlay, or supported input mode first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my controller work in Windows but not in one game?
Windows detection and game compatibility are separate layers. Check the title’s supported controller protocol, enable controller input in its settings, and investigate Steam or another launcher’s Overlay, anti-cheat, and separate-launcher behavior.
Can a charging cable make a controller turn on but remain undetected?
Yes. Some cables provide power without carrying USB data. Use the controller maker’s specified data-capable cable and the correct connector for that model.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I update drivers when only one game fails?
Usually no. If Windows detects the controller and it works elsewhere, prioritize the game’s input settings and launcher compatibility. Update or reinstall Bluetooth drivers when the Bluetooth radio or pairing layer itself is faulty.
Do I need a USB Bluetooth adapter?
Only if the PC lacks working built-in Bluetooth and the controller supports Bluetooth. An adapter does not fix a USB cable, USB port, or game-level input problem.
What does a missing Bluetooth switch mean?
Windows may not be detecting or enabling the PC’s Bluetooth hardware. Check hardware specifications, firmware, Device Manager, and, on Windows 11, the Get Help Bluetooth troubleshooter.
How can I tell whether the controller or PC is at fault?
Test the controller on another computer or test a known-working controller on the same PC. A failure that follows the controller points toward its cable or hardware; a failure that stays with one PC points toward that PC’s USB, Bluetooth, firmware, or Windows configuration.
Why does adding a non-Steam game to Steam not make the controller work?
Valve documents incompatibilities involving anti-cheat, separate launchers that require administrator permissions, missing Overlay support, and games that cannot be added to the Steam library. Use the game publisher’s supported-input guidance.
The Bottom Line
Find the failing layer first. If Windows cannot detect the controller, check power, the exact data cable or Bluetooth pairing, ports, radio hardware, and drivers. If Windows detects it, stop replacing hardware and troubleshoot the game or launcher’s supported input mode. Buy a USB Bluetooth adapter only when the PC lacks Bluetooth and the controller supports it; otherwise follow the connection path that matches the evidence.
