Most Pro Controller connection failures are recoverable pairing, charging, cable, or console-setting problems. First verify that the controller is the official HAC-013 model, update and restart the console, press SYNC once and wake the controller with another button, then pair it from Controllers > Change Grip and Order. Docked Switch-family consoles also let you test USB pairing; Switch Lite requires a different wireless reset sequence and a licensed USB accessory for wired use. If the controller still cannot pair wirelessly or by USB, Nintendo’s supported next step is service rather than disassembly.

Identify the controller and console before troubleshooting

The instructions below apply to the official Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, model HAC-013, used with Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, Nintendo Switch 2, or Nintendo Switch Lite. Look beneath the Nintendo logo on the back of the controller for the model number. Nintendo states that every official Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is HAC-013 regardless of color or special edition.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is a different product. Nintendo says it is compatible only with Switch 2, so do not use the HAC-013 procedure as a guarantee that a Switch 2 Pro Controller will work with an original Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch Lite. A third-party controller must be handled according to its manufacturer’s instructions; Nintendo’s support procedure is for its own controller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Device or situation Correct path Important limitation
Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch 2 in a dock Wireless pairing or USB pairing through the dock USB troubleshooting requires the console powered on in its dock
Switch Lite Wireless pairing; wired use through a compatible licensed accessory The Lite has no built-in dock USB connection
Official HAC-013 controller Use Nintendo’s reset, pairing, and firmware steps Persistent failure by both wireless and USB indicates service may be needed
Third-party controller Follow the controller maker’s procedure HAC-013 instructions may not apply

Run the basic recovery sequence

Perform these steps in order. They clear the common states in which the console is waiting for a pairing command, the controller is asleep, or old connection data is preventing a new connection.

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
  • Take your game sessions up a notch with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
  • Handheld Nintendo Switch gaming at a great price
  • Comes with charging cable (USB C to USB A)
  1. Update the console. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > System > System Update and install any available update.
  2. Restart the console. If it already reports that it is up to date, hold the console’s POWER button for at least three seconds, choose Power Options, and select Restart. Do not confuse Restart with putting the console to sleep.
  3. Reset and wake the controller. Press the controller’s SYNC button once, release it, and then press another button such as A. This resets and wakes the controller. Do not hold SYNC during this step.
  4. Open the pairing screen. On the HOME Menu, choose Controllers > Change Grip and Order.
  5. Pair the controller. While the Change Grip and Order screen is open, hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second. Follow the on-screen indication that the controller has connected.

The distinction between pressing SYNC once and holding it matters. A single press is the reset-and-wake action; holding SYNC for at least one second is the pairing action performed while the console is listening on the Change Grip and Order screen.

Fix a controller that will not connect wirelessly

Confirm it has enough charge

Connect the controller with its USB charging cable and allow it to charge before repeating the wireless sequence. The included cable is model HAC-010. The controller manual also allows a compatible approved adapter supplying 5 V and 1.5 A (7.5 W). A low battery can look like a pairing failure because the controller may not stay awake long enough to complete the exchange.

Pair from the correct menu

Do not start by holding SYNC while you are elsewhere in the HOME Menu. First open Controllers > Change Grip and Order, then hold SYNC for at least one second. If nothing happens, press SYNC once, press A, return to Change Grip and Order, and repeat the pairing action.

Reduce controller and Bluetooth complexity

Temporarily disconnect controllers that are not needed and retry with only the Pro Controller. Nintendo says a Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch can connect up to eight wireless controllers, but the usable maximum varies with controller type, features, and the software being played. The eight-controller figure is therefore a system capacity, not a promise that every combination will work in every game.

If Bluetooth audio is connected, Nintendo limits the system to no more than two wireless controllers. Disconnect Bluetooth audio before attempting to add a third wireless controller. Some games also require Joy-Con controllers to be detached when the console is being used in handheld or tabletop mode; that is a game and control-layout requirement rather than evidence that the Pro Controller is defective.

Use USB pairing on a docked Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch 2

A docked console provides a useful diagnostic branch: it tests the controller through a physical USB connection rather than the normal wireless radio. This applies to Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, and Nintendo Switch 2 when the console is powered on and seated in its dock.

  1. Turn on the console and place it in the dock.
  2. Connect the Pro Controller to a USB port on the dock with the charging cable.
  3. Press a button on the controller.
  4. Wait for the console to recognize it, then test input in the HOME Menu.

If USB pairing fails, work through the following checks one at a time:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Press SYNC once, press another button, and retry the USB connection.
  • Move the cable to another USB port on the same dock.
  • Try a different USB charging cable known to work. Nintendo specifically recommends this test when dock USB pairing fails.
  • If available, test with another compatible dock.
  • After each change, press a controller button and check whether the HOME Menu responds.

A replacement cable can correct a broken data or power connection, but it is not a general remedy for a wireless Bluetooth pairing problem. The cable must support the connection required by the controller, not merely fit the USB socket.

Enable wired communication for ongoing USB play

Pairing by cable and using the controller as a wired controller are related but separate operations. To keep using the Pro Controller over USB, enable the console’s wired-communication setting:

  • Switch 2: open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories, then enable Pro Controller Wired Communication.
  • Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED Model: open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors, then enable Pro Controller Wired Communication.

Nintendo notes that enabling wired communication disables the controller’s NFC touchpoint. If you rely on NFC functionality, wireless use may be preferable. A cable that charges the controller does not automatically mean wired communication is enabled; check the setting on the console.

Follow the different procedure for Switch Lite

Switch Lite cannot use the dock-based USB procedure because it does not have a built-in dock. Use this wireless sequence instead:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Charge the Pro Controller with the HAC-010 cable or a compatible approved adapter.
  2. On the Lite, open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Disconnect Controllers.
  3. Hold the X button until the console reports that wireless controllers have been disconnected.
  4. Press the Pro Controller’s SYNC button once, then press another button such as A.
  5. Open Controllers > Change Grip and Order.
  6. Hold SYNC for at least one second while that screen is open.

For a wired connection with Switch Lite, Nintendo identifies a licensed accessory such as the HORI Dual USB PlayStand as an option. Confirm that the accessory is currently licensed and compatible before buying it. If the controller still will not pair after the Lite sequence, Nintendo directs you to service.

Update the controller firmware

Console software and controller firmware are separate. After updating the console, update the controller from System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers. If the update stops before completion, retry it from the same menu.

Keep the controller charged and near the console while updating. Do not disconnect the cable or power off the console during an update that is in progress. Once the update finishes, repeat the SYNC-once-and-wake step, open Change Grip and Order, and pair again.

Check the charging setup and cable methodically

A controller can appear dead when the problem is simply an empty battery or a cable that supplies power inconsistently. Leave it connected long enough to charge, then press a button to wake it before testing. Use the supplied HAC-010 cable when possible, or an approved adapter rated for 5 V, 1.5 A (7.5 W). A cable that physically fits may still be unsuitable for reliable data communication, so test with a known-good compatible cable rather than assuming every USB lead is equivalent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connecting the controller to a powered-on console with the charging cable can pair it automatically, according to the controller manual. That behavior is useful for a first test, but it does not replace enabling Pro Controller Wired Communication when you want continued wired play. If charging works but the dock never recognizes the controller, compare a second cable and USB port before blaming the controller.

Diagnose an unstable connection that drops during play

If the controller connects but repeatedly disconnects, first treat it as a pairing-state or resource problem rather than assuming radio interference. Press SYNC once, press A, and pair again from Change Grip and Order. Then simplify the setup:

  • Disconnect unused wireless controllers.
  • Disconnect Bluetooth audio while testing, especially if more than two wireless controllers are active.
  • Close the game and test controller input on the HOME Menu.
  • Keep the controller charged and avoid testing immediately after a failed or interrupted update.
  • Test the controller while the console is in its normal operating position, then compare with USB operation on a docked console when available.

Nintendo’s limit of up to eight wireless controllers on Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch is a capacity guideline. It does not establish that the controller-count limit caused a particular person’s disconnection. Use the simplified setup as a diagnostic test, not as proof of a specific interference source.

Use the results to separate setup problems from hardware faults

Result Most useful interpretation Next action
Works after SYNC once, wake, and Change Grip and Order The controller was asleep or its pairing state needed resetting Continue using it; repeat the sequence if it later loses pairing
Works wirelessly but not through the dock The controller radio and pairing are functioning; cable, USB port, dock, or wired setting is suspect Try another USB port, cable, dock, and enable Pro Controller Wired Communication
Works by USB but not wirelessly The physical controller connection is usable, while wireless pairing or radio operation remains unresolved Reset, update the controller, simplify active connections, and retry wireless pairing
Fails with one cable but works with another The first cable is defective or unsuitable for the required connection Use the known-good compatible cable
Fails on every supported path A persistent controller, console, or accessory fault is possible Contact Nintendo service; do not disassemble the controller

Know when Nintendo service is the correct fix

Nintendo’s supported escalation point is clear: if an official Pro Controller cannot pair with Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch either wirelessly or through USB after the applicable steps, it needs service. The same applies to a Switch Lite controller that still will not pair after the Lite-specific disconnect and pairing sequence.

Before contacting support, note the controller model, console model, whether the console is updated, whether the controller works over USB, which cable and dock ports you tested, and whether another dock was available. These observations help support distinguish a controller fault from a dock, cable, or console problem.

Do not open the controller, replace its battery, or attempt an internal repair. Nintendo’s Pro Controller manual states: Do not disassemble or try to repair this product or the battery inside it. The manual instructs users to stop using a damaged product and contact Nintendo Customer Support. Unverified battery work can create electrical, fire, or physical-safety risks and can make service more difficult.

Additional questions readers ask

Does a Switch 2 Pro Controller work with an original Switch?

No. Nintendo identifies the Switch 2 Pro Controller as a separate product compatible only with Switch 2. Check the label on the back of the controller before applying HAC-013 instructions.

Is HAC-013 printed on every official Pro Controller?

Yes. Nintendo says official Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers carry model number HAC-013 regardless of color or special edition. If the model is different, use the maker’s support instructions instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does pressing SYNC once help?

One press resets and wakes the controller. Pairing requires a separate action: open Change Grip and Order first, then hold SYNC for at least one second. Holding SYNC during the reset step can leave you troubleshooting the wrong state.

Can I fix wireless pairing by buying a new USB cable?

Only if the existing cable is preventing a wired test or charging. Nintendo recommends trying another compatible cable when dock USB pairing fails, but a replacement cable is not a general fix for Bluetooth pairing.

Can I use a Pro Controller wired with Switch Lite?

Not directly through a built-in dock, because Switch Lite has none. Nintendo identifies a licensed accessory such as the HORI Dual USB PlayStand for a wired connection. Verify current compatibility before purchase.

Why will the controller pair but not stay connected when Bluetooth headphones are connected?

Bluetooth audio limits the console to no more than two wireless controllers. Disconnect the audio device while testing, then reconnect it only after confirming the controller setup works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does enabling wired communication remove any controller feature?

Yes. Nintendo says wired communication disables the controller’s NFC touchpoint. Choose wireless mode when NFC is needed.

What if a controller firmware update stops?

Return to System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers and retry. Keep the controller charged and avoid interrupting power during the update.

Should I replace the battery or open the controller?

No. Nintendo’s manual says not to disassemble or repair the product or its battery. Stop using a damaged unit and contact Nintendo Customer Support.

A compact decision checklist

  • Is the controller an official HAC-013, rather than a Switch 2-only controller or a third-party model?
  • Is the console updated through System Settings > System > System Update?
  • Did you restart the console through POWER > Power Options > Restart?
  • Did you press SYNC once and then another button before attempting pairing?
  • Did you hold SYNC for at least one second only after opening Controllers > Change Grip and Order?
  • On a docked console, did you test another USB port, another known-good cable, and another dock if available?
  • On Switch Lite, did you use Disconnect Controllers, hold X, and then perform the wireless pairing sequence?
  • Did you disconnect Bluetooth audio when more than two wireless controllers were involved?
  • Did you run System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers and retry if the update stopped?
  • After all supported tests fail, did you stop troubleshooting internally and arrange Nintendo service?

What not to do

  • Do not hold SYNC as the reset step; press it once, then wake the controller with another button.
  • Do not assume a charging cable will solve a wireless-only problem.
  • Do not treat the eight-controller capacity as a guarantee for every game or controller combination.
  • Do not apply HAC-013 instructions to a third-party controller without checking its manufacturer’s procedure.
  • Do not disassemble the controller or attempt a battery replacement.
