Set the affected display to its recommended (native) resolution first. Then adjust scaling or choose a larger-text option if everything is sharp but too small. If only Windows lettering is fuzzy, run ClearType; if one app or one monitor remains blurry, investigate high-DPI handling, the monitor’s own menu, and the video connection.
First, identify what is actually wrong
“Blurry” and “too small” are related complaints, but they require different fixes. Resolution controls the display mode and has a major effect on sharpness. Scaling controls the apparent size of text, icons, and interface elements without changing the panel’s native pixel grid.
| What you see | Most useful first check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everything is soft, including images and windows | Select the affected display and choose its setting marked Recommended | A lower-than-native mode can make text and graphics less sharp. |
| The picture is crisp, but menus and text are uncomfortably small | Increase Windows Scale or choose Larger Text on a Mac | Scaling changes size while preserving the display’s appropriate resolution. |
| Only Windows interface text looks fuzzy | Run Adjust ClearType text | ClearType changes text rendering; it is not a cure for every image or signal problem. |
| One application is blurry while the rest of the desktop is clear | Check that application’s high-DPI compatibility and update it | An application that is not DPI-aware may be bitmap-scaled by the operating system. |
| Only one of several monitors has the problem | Select that monitor before changing resolution or scaling | Displays with different resolutions can receive different scaling settings. |
| The monitor’s own menu is also unclear | Inspect the monitor’s on-screen display and reset controls | The fault may be in the monitor or its image processing rather than desktop settings. |
1. Restore the recommended resolution
Windows 11 and Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Choose System > Display.
- If more than one screen is connected, click the monitor that looks blurry. Do not change the settings for a different display by mistake.
- Expand Display resolution.
- Select the entry labeled Recommended.
- Accept the change when Windows asks you to keep it.
Microsoft explains that a monitor can accept resolutions below its native resolution, but text will not look as sharp. The resulting image can also be small and centered, surrounded by black borders, or stretched. Those symptoms are signs that the display mode is not a good match for the panel.
Do not deliberately lower resolution just to make words larger. After restoring the recommended value, use Scale under Settings > System > Display to enlarge text and applications.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 use similar labels, although the exact layout can vary by release or graphics driver. Microsoft’s support guidance covers both; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so a Windows 10 computer should not be treated as receiving current operating-system support.
macOS
- Open the Apple menu.
- Choose System Settings > Displays.
- Select the display with the problem if several are connected.
- Review the available resolution choices and compare the resulting text and image clarity.
Apple states that display resolution determines the size of text and objects. On a Mac, the Larger Text display option is the appropriate choice when the image is sharp but the interface is hard to read. The choices shown can differ by Mac model, connected monitor, and macOS version, so there is no single resolution label that appears on every system.
2. Make text larger without making it soft
Use Windows scaling
With the recommended resolution selected, return to Settings > System > Display and find Scale (also described as Change the size of text, apps, and other items in some Windows interfaces). Start with the percentage marked Recommended. If that is still difficult to read, choose a larger available percentage and check the applications you use most.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsScaling enlarges interface elements that are rendered for a high-density display. It is different from changing resolution: resolution determines how the monitor’s pixels are used, while scaling changes the logical size at which Windows draws content. A larger scale can make controls easier to read while retaining a crisp native display mode.
When you change scaling on a multi-monitor setup, select each display separately. A laptop panel and an external monitor often have different pixel densities, so one percentage may be comfortable on one screen and excessive or insufficient on the other.
Choose Larger Text on a Mac
In Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, compare the resolution choices and select Larger Text when that option is shown. Check both ordinary text and application controls after changing it. Apple’s available choices depend on the display and macOS version, so use the preview and legibility of your own screen rather than expecting a particular numeric setting.

3. Tune fuzzy Windows lettering with ClearType
If the monitor is using its recommended resolution and the desktop still has fuzzy-looking letters, run Windows’ text-rendering tuner:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Windows Search.
- Type Adjust ClearType text.
- Open the matching settings result.
- Follow the wizard and select the text sample that looks clearest at each stage.
ViewSonic recommends trying ClearType after checking resolution and scaling. It can improve the appearance of Windows lettering, especially when the complaint is limited to text rather than photographs, video, or the entire desktop. ClearType cannot correct a damaged monitor, an incorrect display mode, a poor signal, or an application that is being badly scaled.
4. Determine whether one application is responsible
When the desktop is clear but one app is blurry
High-DPI handling can differ from one application to another. Microsoft’s technical guidance notes that an application that is not DPI-aware may be bitmap-scaled by Windows, which makes its interface look fuzzy even when the rest of the desktop is sharp.
- Update the affected application to its latest version available for your operating system.
- Look in the application’s own preferences for display, zoom, or high-DPI options.
- Check Windows’ per-application compatibility settings if the program is older.
- Change one application setting at a time and reopen the program before judging the result.
Do not disable scaling indiscriminately. A compatibility override can make an application appear physically smaller, or it can introduce clipped controls, overlapping text, and unusable dialog boxes. If an override creates those symptoms, return it to the previous setting and use the application’s own update or display options instead.
When only one monitor is affected
On a mixed-monitor setup, first click the affected display in Settings > System > Display (Windows) or in System Settings > Displays (macOS). Intel notes that external-monitor scenarios with different resolutions can produce blurry text or incorrectly sized elements. A setting change made while another monitor is selected will not address the affected screen.
Compare a basic window, a web page, and an image on each display. If only content moved to one monitor changes size or sharpness, the issue is more likely to be that display’s resolution or scaling assignment than a global text-rendering problem.

5. Use the monitor’s own menu as a hardware test
Check the on-screen display
Press the monitor’s menu button to open its on-screen display (OSD). Look at the menu text and icons themselves:
- OSD also blurry: monitor settings, internal image processing, or monitor hardware become more plausible. Consult the model’s manual or the manufacturer’s support process. Use the monitor’s reset or memory-recall control if the manual identifies one.
- OSD clear but computer image blurry: focus on the selected display mode, operating-system scaling, application handling, and the video path between computer and monitor.
This comparison separates a computer-rendered image from the monitor-generated menu. It does not prove which component has failed, but it prevents spending time changing Windows or macOS text settings when the monitor itself is displaying its own menu incorrectly.
Reseat the connection
- Turn off or put the computer and monitor into their normal safe state for reconnecting the cable.
- Remove the video cable from the computer or dock and from the monitor.
- Check both plugs and ports for looseness or visible damage.
- Reconnect each end firmly, then select the correct input on the monitor if it has more than one.
- Recheck the selected resolution and scaling after the connection is restored.
A cable is a conditional fix, not a general remedy for small text. ViewSonic recommends avoiding VGA where possible because it is analog and can be susceptible to visible noise; HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C are digital alternatives when both devices support the same connection. Samsung also recommends reconnecting or replacing video cables during troubleshooting.

How to distinguish resolution, scaling, and cable symptoms
A resolution mismatch usually affects the whole desktop: windows, photographs, icons, and text all lose crispness. You may also see a centered image, black borders, or stretching. Return to the recommended mode before judging any other setting.
Scaling is the better control when the image is clean but reading is tiring. It changes the apparent size of interface elements, so text can become more comfortable without asking the panel to display a non-native mode. On macOS, use the larger-text display choice; on Windows, use Scale.

A signal-path problem is more plausible when the computer image is broadly abnormal while the OSD remains clear, or when reseating the connection changes the symptom. Inspect the cable, ports, adapter, and dock as one chain. A cable purchase is justified only when that chain is loose, damaged, analog, or unable to carry the desired display mode; it is not a substitute for correcting resolution or scaling.

Common mistakes that make the problem worse
- Changing the wrong monitor: multi-display settings apply to the display currently selected. Confirm its highlighted diagram or name before editing.
- Confusing zoom with scaling: an application’s zoom changes that application’s content; Windows Scale or macOS display choices affect the broader interface.
- Stacking several changes at once: if you change resolution, scaling, ClearType, and a cable together, you cannot tell which action helped. Work through them in order.
- Forcing a compatibility override: per-app DPI options can solve one program’s bitmap scaling, but they can also produce tiny controls or clipping. Undo an override that creates new layout problems.
- Buying a cable before checking settings: a cable is relevant when the connection is loose, damaged, analog, or unable to carry the desired mode. It is not a cure for text that is simply too small.
- Ignoring the monitor menu: a blurry OSD points attention toward monitor settings or hardware, while a clear OSD keeps the computer, application, and cable path in focus.
A complete order of operations
For the least disruptive diagnosis, follow this sequence and stop when the symptom is resolved:
- Select the affected display.
- Set its resolution to Recommended on Windows, or review the available display resolution choices on macOS.
- If the picture is sharp but too small, increase Windows Scale or choose macOS Larger Text.
- If Windows lettering alone remains fuzzy, run Adjust ClearType text.
- If one application remains blurry, update it and investigate its high-DPI behavior rather than changing the entire system.
- Open the monitor OSD and compare its clarity with the computer image.
- Reseat the cable; consider a compatible HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C cable only when the existing signal path is a plausible cause.
- If the OSD itself remains blurry or the display still fails after these checks, use the monitor model’s manual or manufacturer support for hardware-specific diagnosis.
This order puts reversible, built-in settings before accessory purchases and keeps sharpness controls separate from size controls. It also gives you a clear stopping point: once the recommended mode is sharp and scaling is comfortable, further changes are unlikely to improve readability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I lower my monitor’s resolution to make text bigger?
Usually no. Lower-than-native modes can make text and graphics less sharp and may create a small, centered, black-bordered, or stretched image. Set the display to the Windows value marked Recommended first, then use Windows Scale. On a Mac, choose the Larger Text display option when available.
Why is only one application blurry?
The application may not be DPI-aware, so the operating system bitmap-scales its interface. Update the app, inspect its display or high-DPI preferences, and check its per-application compatibility settings. Do not apply a global override automatically: it can create tiny controls, clipped content, or overlapping text.
ClearType did not fix the blur. What should I do?
ClearType only tunes Windows text rendering. If photographs, video, windows, or the whole desktop are blurry, verify the selected display and recommended resolution, then inspect scaling and the signal path. Compare the computer image with the monitor’s own on-screen menu.

Why is one monitor blurry while another is fine?
Different displays can have different resolutions and scaling requirements. Select the affected monitor in Display settings before changing anything, then check its resolution and scale independently. Mixed-resolution external-monitor setups can produce blurry text or incorrectly sized elements.
How do I know whether the monitor or the computer is at fault?
Open the monitor’s OSD. If its menu is also blurry, monitor settings, internal processing, or hardware are more plausible; use the manual’s reset control or contact the manufacturer. If the OSD is clear, concentrate on operating-system settings, the application, and the cable path.
Will buying an HDMI or DisplayPort cable fix small text?
Not by itself. A replacement is sensible only when the existing cable or connection is loose, damaged, analog, or unable to support the desired display mode. Match the connector and confirm that the computer, adapter or dock, and monitor support that resolution. Cable changes do not replace scaling controls.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does changing scale sometimes make an app look worse?
Applications handle high-DPI scaling differently. A compatibility change can remove fuzziness in one program but make controls too small or cause clipping and overlap. Change one setting at a time, reopen the app, and undo the override if the layout becomes unusable.
What if the menus changed after I reconnected the monitor?
Select the affected display again and verify its input, resolution, and scale. Reseating or changing a connection can alter which display mode the computer uses, so recheck those settings after reconnecting the cable.
The Bottom Line
Use the display’s recommended or native resolution for sharpness, then use scaling or Larger Text for readability. Run ClearType only for remaining Windows text fuzziness, isolate blurry applications with their high-DPI settings, and test the monitor OSD and cable before buying accessories. If the OSD is blurry too, follow the monitor manufacturer’s hardware guidance.
