A monitor arm that drops, shakes, or drifts out of position may need a model-specific tension adjustment—but that is only one possible cause. First identify what is moving, then check the arm’s compatibility, mounting hardware, and desk before making any adjustment. Follow the instructions for your exact arm model; there is no universal tension-screw location, direction, or tool size.

Identify what is moving before you adjust anything

Watch the monitor while it is still. If you can, have someone else observe the base, joints, screen head, VESA plate, and desk edge as you gently reposition the display. A change in one part can look like another: a screen that tips forward is not necessarily an arm that is sinking, and a clamp that shifts is not a gas-spring problem.

Symptom What to observe First area to investigate
The whole arm and monitor sink together The arm’s height changes while its base remains fixed. Whether the monitor is within the arm’s supported weight range and whether the model’s height-tension adjustment is set correctly.
The arm stays up, but the screen tilts or droops at the head The screen angle changes at the joint behind the display. The monitor-head tilt connection and its instructions, rather than assuming the arm’s height tension is responsible.
The display shakes when touched or while typing Notice whether movement starts at a joint, the VESA plate, the base, or the desk. Connectors, mounting points, and the rigidity of the desk and its edge.
The clamp or base moves on the desk The arm’s base shifts, rotates, or slides relative to the desktop. Clamp or grommet installation, desk compatibility, and the condition of the mounting surface.
The desk moves with the monitor The desktop or its edge flexes as the arm moves. The desk and mounting location. An arm-tension change cannot make a flexing support surface rigid.

Do not increase tension just because the monitor is low or shaky. If the movement comes from the screen head, mount, or desk, changing height tension may leave the actual fault untouched.

Check the arm’s instructions and compatibility

Find the exact model and its manual

Look for a model name or number on the arm, product label, packaging, or purchase records, then use the matching manufacturer manual. Arm designs differ: adjustment location, direction, required tool, and safe procedure are model-specific. A procedure for one arm should not be transferred to another.

We only recommend installing it on a wooden desk, preferably with no crossbeam blocking the underside.

For example, the W100 manual says to keep that arm horizontal while turning its height-adjustment screw to match the monitor’s weight. That is guidance for the W100, not a universal method. Fellowes likewise recommends using the supplied tool when adjusting gas-spring tension. If your manual does not explain how to make a particular adjustment, do not guess at the screw or substitute a tool.

Verify the monitor and desk match the arm

Before adjusting tension, compare the monitor and installation with the arm’s stated limits. Check these items in the manual or product specifications:

  • Mounting method: Establish whether the arm uses a desk-edge clamp, a through-desk or grommet mount, or another attachment, and follow its installation requirements.
  • Desk thickness and strength: Check the permitted thickness and whether the desk can support the arm, monitor, and attached parts at the intended mounting point.

The W100 manual specifies a supported load of 2–9 kg and a desk-thickness range of 10–80 mm for that product. Those figures apply to the W100 only; they are not standard limits for monitor arms generally. Use your own model’s specifications.

How to fix a monitor arm that sags or won’t stay at the desired height

Proceed only if the monitor is within the arm’s documented weight range, the base is secure, and there is no visible damage. Keep a hand on the display so it cannot drop or swing unexpectedly, and make only the adjustment described in the manual.

Step 1: Affix the bracket to your table; Step 2: Attach your monitor to the VESA plate; Step 3: Adjust tension according to your monitor weight.
  • Two mounting options : You may choose to use either a C-clamp or grommet mount. For best results, make sure your table meets the following criteria: wood tabletop is recommended; the underside of the tabletop should ideally be free of any beams or panels that may interfere with the installation; the tabletop thickness and grommet mounting can support 0.59"-3.54”.
  1. Place the display in the position specified by the manual. Some procedures require a particular arm position. The W100 procedure, for example, calls for the arm to be horizontal during its height-tension adjustment. Follow the requirement for your model.
  2. Use the specified adjustment point and tool. Do not assume a screw near a joint controls height tension; it may serve another purpose. Use the supplied tool if the manual calls for it.
  3. Make a small adjustment, then check the result. Keep hold of the display and test whether it stays where you place it. If it still sinks or rises, consult the manual for the next adjustment rather than turning the screw repeatedly by guesswork.
  4. Stop at the approved limit. If the adjustment reaches its limit without holding a compatible monitor, or the instructions do not cover what you are seeing, stop and contact the manufacturer.

Some arms use gas springs, while others may have a different mechanism. Do not infer the adjustment direction, screw location, or required force from another model. Do not force a stuck adjuster, dismantle the arm, or keep adjusting hardware that appears bent, cracked, loose, or otherwise damaged.

How to fix a monitor arm that wobbles

Trace the movement to its source

Gently move the display through a small range and observe the hardware rather than shaking the setup forcefully. Check the base or clamp, arm joints, and VESA connection. Fellowes calls out checking connectors—especially the VESA plate—when troubleshooting shaking. Use your arm’s manual to identify which connections can be checked and how they should be secured.

If the clamp shifts, examine whether the arm is installed using its intended mounting method and whether the desktop thickness is within the model’s permitted range. If the desk edge flexes, the support surface may be the source of the movement. Tightening a joint or changing spring tension will not correct a desk that bends under the load.

Secure only the connections the manual identifies

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for checking connectors. Use the specified parts and tools; do not add substitute bolts, washers, or other hardware unless the manufacturer approves them. The W100 manual specifically instructs users to use the supplied parts and tools, not to disassemble or arbitrarily exchange the arm, and to ensure the desk can support the product and its parts. Those safeguards are especially important if you are tempted to improvise a fix.

When tension adjustment is not the answer

Adjustment is not a remedy for a monitor that exceeds the arm’s supported range, a VESA mismatch, an incompatible desk mount, a flexing desk, or damaged hardware. Continuing to increase tension in those situations may conceal the symptom without correcting the underlying fit or support problem.

  • Monitor outside the weight range: Remove it from the arm and confirm the specifications before use. Choose hardware rated for the display rather than trying to compensate with extra tension.
  • VESA or mounting mismatch: Check the monitor’s mounting pattern and the arm’s approved attachment options. Do not force the plate or improvise mounting hardware.
  • Clamp or desk movement: Recheck the installation against the manual and verify the desk dimensions and suitability. If the desk flexes, address the mounting surface rather than the spring setting.
  • Damaged parts or an adjustment at its limit: Stop using the arm if it cannot safely support the monitor. Contact the manufacturer for model-specific help or replacement guidance.

When to repair, contact the manufacturer, or replace the arm

Contact the manufacturer if a correctly matched monitor still will not stay in place after the approved adjustment, if the adjuster reaches its documented limit, if the instructions are unclear, or if a component looks damaged. Provide the arm model, monitor model and weight, how it is mounted, and a description of which part moves; these details help distinguish a tension question from a fit or mounting issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider replacement only when the arm is damaged or cannot safely support the display and the manufacturer cannot provide an appropriate remedy. Before choosing another arm, compare its supported minimum and maximum monitor weight, VESA pattern, permitted desk thickness, clamp or grommet compatibility, adjustment instructions, safety limits, and availability of parts. A new arm is not automatically necessary when the original simply needs a correct, documented adjustment or installation correction.

Safety checks before using the setup again

  • The monitor weight, VESA pattern, and desk mounting method match the arm’s documented requirements.
  • The base, arm joints, and VESA connection do not show damage or movement that the manual does not allow.
  • The desk and mounting point support the installation without noticeable flex that causes the display to move.
  • The arm holds the display in the intended position after adjustment, without forcing the mechanism or exceeding its instructions.
  • All checked connections were handled with the approved parts, tools, and procedure.

If any of these checks fails, do not rely on the arm to hold the monitor securely until the issue is resolved.
