A Magic Mouse that will not connect, scroll, or click can have three different causes. Start by identifying the mouse model and confirming power, then restore Bluetooth pairing. If it connects but will not scroll, check the one-finger gesture and Mouse settings. If the pointer lags, clean the underside sensor and look for wireless interference. A secondary-click problem is usually a setting; a primary physical-click failure may require service.

Start with the symptom, not a random reset

Use the branch that matches what you see. A mouse that is absent from Bluetooth needs a connection or power fix; cleaning the sensor will not repair pairing. A pointer that moves but stutters has a tracking problem, not necessarily a dead battery. A right-click that does nothing may simply be disabled in macOS.

What is failing Most relevant checks Do not confuse it with
Mouse does not appear or connect Power switch, charge or batteries, Bluetooth, cable pairing, interference Sensor dirt or scroll-speed settings
Pointer moves but scrolling does nothing One-finger brush gesture and Mouse settings The separate two-finger horizontal swipe
Pointer is jittery, slow, or lagging Underside sensor, tracking speed, wireless interference A completely lost Bluetooth connection
Right-click does not work Secondary click setting or Control-click A failed primary physical click
Pressing the top surface does not register Power and connection confirmation, then service assessment A software-only secondary-click setting

Apple’s connection instructions cover rechargeable and earlier battery-powered models, but the steps differ by connector and battery design. Identify the mouse before buying a cable or following setup instructions.

Identify your Magic Mouse before charging or pairing

USB-C Magic Mouse

The current USB-C Magic Mouse has a USB-C port, was introduced in 2024, and requires macOS 15.1 or later according to Apple’s technical specifications: Magic Mouse (USB-C) – Tech Specs. Use a cable with USB-C at the mouse end. A cable intended for a Lightning mouse will not fit.

Lightning rechargeable models

Earlier rechargeable Magic Mouse models use a Lightning port. Use a Lightning cable at the mouse end and follow the same general Mac connection process. Do not assume that a USB-C mouse cable is interchangeable simply because the Mac has USB-C ports.

Earlier battery-powered models

Some older wireless models do not have a charging port and use replaceable batteries. They have different pairing instructions from rechargeable accessories. If the LED never illuminates after switching the mouse on, check or replace the batteries before troubleshooting Bluetooth.

What the switch tells you

Slide the switch on the underside off and back on. Green visible beneath the switch means the mouse is on. This simple check applies before you try pairing, scrolling, or clicking fixes.

Fix power, charging, and the first connection

1. Turn the mouse on

  1. Turn the mouse over and slide the power switch off.
  2. Slide it back on and verify that green is visible.
  3. Keep the mouse close to the Mac while pairing; remove nearby wireless clutter if the connection repeatedly drops.

2. Check charge or batteries from the Mac

A rechargeable Magic Mouse has no charge indicator on its shell. Check its level in Control Centre > Bluetooth, or in the Bluetooth menu where your macOS version provides that status. For a battery-powered model, install fresh batteries if the LED does not illuminate.

3. Use the matching cable

Connect the correct USB-C or Lightning cable to the mouse and then to the Mac or a power adapter. Apple’s setup flow says that connecting the accessory to the Mac for one minute pairs and charges it; disconnect it afterward for wireless use. The Mac-end connector and adapter arrangement depend on your Mac and cable, so the mouse-end port is the part that must match the model.

Apple states that “Magic Mouse is unavailable for use while charging” in its battery guidance: Recharge the built-in battery in your Apple keyboard, mouse or trackpad. If the pointer stops responding while the cable is connected, that behavior is expected rather than evidence of a failed mouse.

Mouse type Mouse-side connector or power Use the cable for Charging while operating
USB-C model (introduced 2024) USB-C port USB-C cable Not available; disconnect for wireless use
Earlier rechargeable model Lightning port Lightning cable Not available; disconnect for wireless use
Earlier wireless model Replaceable batteries; no rechargeable port No charging cable Not applicable

If the mouse works immediately after the one-minute cable connection, unplug it and test wireless operation. Leaving it attached does not make it usable as a wired mouse.

Restore Bluetooth when the Magic Mouse will not connect

Check Bluetooth in macOS

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth on newer macOS.
  2. On older macOS, open Apple menu > System Preferences and use the Bluetooth pane.
  3. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled and look for the Magic Mouse in the device list.

Apple uses both “System Settings” and “System Preferences” in its support material because labels vary by macOS release. Do not treat a missing “System Settings” label as a fault; use the equivalent pane in your version.

If Bluetooth cannot be enabled

  1. Restart the Mac.
  2. After restart, return to the Bluetooth settings and enable Bluetooth.
  3. Turn the mouse off and on again.
  4. For a rechargeable model, connect it to the Mac with the matching cable for about one minute to pair it, then disconnect.

Apple’s connection troubleshooting article provides the restart and cable-pairing guidance: If you can’t connect your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad to your Mac.

If the connection drops after pairing

Move the mouse and Mac away from other wireless transmitters, crowded USB devices, hubs, and possible sources of Bluetooth interference. Reconnect after the environment is quieter. Interference is relevant when the mouse connects and then becomes intermittent; it is not the first explanation for a mouse that never powers on.

Use the earlier-device procedure for battery models

Earlier battery-powered Magic Mouse models follow Apple’s separate earlier-device pairing steps. If their LED never lights, replace the batteries first. Do not force a rechargeable-mouse procedure onto a model that has no charging port. Apple’s model-specific setup guidance is at Set up your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad with your Mac.

Fix scrolling that stopped working

Use the correct gesture

Magic Mouse scrolling is a one-finger brush across its touch surface. Place one finger on the surface and move it vertically. A two-finger horizontal swipe is a separate gesture for moving sideways between pages or views; it is not the normal vertical-scroll command.

Adjust scrolling in Mouse settings

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Mouse.
  2. Adjust scrolling speed and other mouse behavior controls.
  3. On older macOS, open Apple menu > System Preferences and choose Mouse.
  4. Test in a document or web page after each change.

Apple documents the gesture and the available Mouse controls in its macOS user guide: Use a Magic Mouse with Mac mini. If the pointer moves and clicks but a vertical brush produces no movement, settings or gesture recognition are more likely than Bluetooth loss. If the pointer itself is frozen, return to the power and connection branch.

Check whether only one application is affected

Test scrolling in more than one window. If it works in one app but not another, the mouse is transmitting a gesture and the problem is likely limited to the affected application or its content. If it fails everywhere, continue with the Mouse settings and connection checks rather than changing an application-specific preference at random.

Fix a Magic Mouse that will not click

Distinguish primary click from secondary click

A normal or primary click is made by pressing the upper surface. A secondary click is the contextual or right-click action configured separately in macOS. A failure of one does not prove that the other is broken.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Enable or change secondary click

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Mouse.
  2. Find Secondary click and choose the side or gesture you want.
  3. On older macOS, use Apple menu > System Preferences > Mouse.
  4. Control-click is an alternative way to open a contextual menu when secondary click is not configured as expected.

After changing the setting, test on a file or desktop item. If the primary click works but the contextual click does not, this setting is the relevant fix. Apple describes the click options in the same Magic Mouse user guide: Use a Magic Mouse with Mac mini.

If the physical primary click still fails

First confirm that the mouse is powered and connected by checking whether the pointer moves. If it moves but pressing the top surface never produces a primary click, the official guidance reviewed here does not establish a user repair or teardown procedure. Arrange help through Apple Support or a qualified service provider rather than forcing the shell open or spraying cleaner into the click mechanism.

Fix jittery, slow, or lagging tracking

Clean the underside sensor

  1. Turn the mouse off.
  2. Inspect the sensor opening on the underside for dust or debris.
  3. Use a soft cloth or compressed air to clean the sensor area.
  4. If using compressed air, keep the can upright; do not invert it while spraying.
  5. Turn the mouse on and test tracking on a clean, suitable surface.

Apple’s sensor guidance is intended for jittery, lagging, or slow tracking, not for a missing Bluetooth connection or a failed click: How to keep your Magic Mouse tracking smoothly.

Adjust tracking speed

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Mouse and adjust tracking speed. On older macOS, use System Preferences > Mouse. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether the pointer becomes controllable without introducing a new problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rule out wireless interference

If cleaning and tracking-speed changes do not help, test with the Mac and mouse away from other wireless devices and congested hubs. Interference can produce pauses or lag even when Bluetooth remains connected. If the problem persists in a clear environment, Apple says service may be needed.

Replacement cable and accessory choices

A physical accessory is useful only when it supports the documented fix. Match the mouse-end connector first:

Need Appropriate item What it can accomplish What it cannot establish
Pair or charge a current model Compatible USB-C cable for the USB-C Magic Mouse One-minute Mac connection can pair and charge the mouse It does not make the mouse usable while charging
Pair or charge an earlier rechargeable model Lightning cable that fits that mouse Connects the accessory for pairing and charging It is not interchangeable with a USB-C mouse port
Clean poor tracking Soft cloth or compressed air Removes debris from the underside sensor It is not a proven fix for click hardware or Bluetooth-radio failure
Earlier battery model Correct replacement batteries Restores power when batteries are depleted It does not replace the model’s pairing procedure

The cited Apple material does not establish a particular cable brand, price, availability, or success rate. Choose by connector and model, not by a generic “Magic Mouse cable” label.

When troubleshooting should stop

Escalate instead of repeating resets when any of these conditions remains after the relevant branch:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The switch is on and power is confirmed, but the mouse never appears in Bluetooth or pairs through the matching cable.
  • A rechargeable model does not respond after a one-minute cable connection and adequate charge time.
  • The pointer remains severely jittery or laggy after sensor cleaning, tracking adjustment, and an interference check.
  • Primary physical clicking fails while the pointer otherwise moves normally.
  • The mouse has visible damage, a loose port, liquid exposure, or a switch that will not stay on.

Apple’s connection and tracking articles indicate that persistent faults may need service, but they do not promise that a particular repair will cure every hardware failure. Use Apple Support or a qualified service provider for diagnosis.

Quick decision checklist

  1. Identify whether the mouse has USB-C, Lightning, or replaceable batteries.
  2. Switch it off and on; verify green is visible.
  3. Check charge in macOS Bluetooth controls, or replace batteries in an earlier model.
  4. Use the matching cable for about one minute to pair and charge a rechargeable mouse, then unplug it.
  5. Confirm Bluetooth in System Settings or System Preferences and restart the Mac if Bluetooth cannot be enabled.
  6. For scrolling, brush one finger vertically and adjust Mouse settings; do not substitute the horizontal two-finger swipe.
  7. For a right-click problem, configure Secondary click or use Control-click.
  8. For jitter or lag, clean the underside sensor with a cloth or upright compressed-air can and check interference.
  9. If a primary click or connection still fails, arrange service rather than attempting an unsupported teardown.

The Bottom Line

Match the troubleshooting step to the symptom: power and Bluetooth for connection failures, the one-finger gesture and Mouse settings for scrolling, Secondary click for contextual clicks, and sensor cleaning or interference checks for laggy tracking. Persistent primary-click or connection faults require professional service.
