If your Magic Keyboard for iPad Air will not type or its trackpad is unresponsive, work through Apple’s sequence in order: confirm the iPad and keyboard are compatible, update iPadOS to the required version, clean both Smart Connectors with a soft lint-free cloth, remove any second case or cover, reconnect the keyboard, and restart the iPad if it still does not respond. These steps address the common connection checks without assuming that the keyboard has failed.
Start with the two checks that can make every other step ineffective
A Magic Keyboard can appear dead when the iPad model, keyboard model, or operating-system version is not supported. Check those conditions before treating an unresponsive keyboard as a hardware problem.
Confirm the exact iPad Air and keyboard models
Identify the precise generation of your iPad Air and the exact Magic Keyboard model. Apple’s guidance is to make sure the iPad and keyboard or folio work together. The support instructions do not provide a complete generation-by-generation pairing table, so do not infer compatibility from the fact that both products are called “iPad Air” or “Magic Keyboard.” Use the model information shown for your devices and verify the pairing in Apple’s compatibility information. If you cannot establish a supported pairing, connection troubleshooting cannot prove that either device is defective.

Apple states that “Magic Keyboard for iPad Air requires iPadOS 18.3 or later.” On the iPad, open Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest version offered for that iPad. Let the update finish before testing the keyboard again. The 18.3 figure is a minimum software-version requirement, not a recommendation to install a particular newer release when one is available.

If the keyboard is not responding, use the iPad’s screen to reach Software Update. If an update is offered, keep the iPad connected to power as appropriate for the update process and wait until iPadOS returns to the Home Screen before reconnecting the keyboard.
Clean and reconnect the Smart Connector
Magic Keyboard for iPad Air uses a physical Smart Connector connection. Apple’s published cleaning instruction is specific: disconnect the keyboard, then clean the Smart Connector on the keyboard and the connector on the back or edge of the iPad with a soft, lint-free cloth. A clean, dry microfiber cloth is a suitable example of that cloth type.
Follow this order
- Separate the iPad from the Magic Keyboard.
- Inspect the connector areas for visible dust or debris without scraping them.
- Using a soft, lint-free cloth, gently wipe the Smart Connector on the keyboard and the Smart Connector on the back or edge of the iPad.
- Remove any other case or cover from the iPad. Apple specifically calls for removing another case or cover when using Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard Folio, because an additional layer can prevent the devices from seating correctly.
- Attach the iPad directly to the Magic Keyboard so the connector surfaces meet.
- Test both typing and the trackpad after the iPad is seated.
Do not add liquid, abrasive material, or a sharp tool to this process. Apple’s instruction calls for a soft, lint-free cloth; staying with that method avoids introducing a cleaning method that the published guidance does not recommend.

Why reseating matters
The connector-cleaning and case-removal steps address the physical connection without requiring a replacement keyboard. A keyboard that begins working after reseating had a connection or seating issue at the time of the test; that result does not establish why the issue occurred or guarantee that it cannot recur.
Restart the iPad after reconnecting
Apple advises restarting the iPad if the keyboard does not immediately respond after reconnection. Reconnect the keyboard first, give it a moment to respond, and restart the iPad when it remains unresponsive. After the iPad finishes restarting, test a text field and move the trackpad pointer.
The restart is a recovery step in Apple’s sequence, not a diagnostic claim. If the keyboard still fails afterward, the published procedure has been completed, but the result alone does not prove a hardware fault.

Use the symptom to choose what to test next
Typing and trackpad input are both mentioned in Apple’s troubleshooting description. Use the table below to keep the checks in the correct order rather than jumping straight to replacement.
| What you observe | What to do | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Neither typing nor trackpad input works | Check model compatibility and iPadOS, then clean both Smart Connectors, remove another case or cover, reconnect, and restart if necessary. | The complete published connection sequence has not yet been ruled out. |
| Typing does not respond, but the iPad’s onscreen keyboard works | Run the same compatibility, software, connector, case-removal, reconnection, and restart checks. | The onscreen keyboard confirms that you can continue using iPad settings while troubleshooting; it does not identify the cause of the accessory problem. |
| Trackpad input does not respond, but typing works | Reseat the keyboard and clean both Smart Connectors with the specified cloth, then restart if the trackpad remains unresponsive. | Partial operation does not establish that a separate trackpad repair is required. |
| The keyboard works only after being moved or reseated | Remove any additional case or cover and repeat the connector-cleaning and direct reconnection steps. | The keyboard’s position or the connector contact should be checked before considering service. |
| The keyboard remains unresponsive after all published steps | Record the exact iPad Air generation, keyboard model, installed iPadOS version, and steps already completed, then contact Apple Support. | Apple’s article does not set a repair threshold or confirm a failed component from this symptom alone. |
A complete troubleshooting procedure
If you prefer a single checklist, complete these steps once from top to bottom. Skipping the compatibility or software check can leave an unsupported combination looking like a failed accessory.
- Write down the models. Note the exact iPad Air generation and exact Magic Keyboard model. Do not substitute a generic product name for the model information.
- Verify the pairing. Confirm through Apple’s compatibility information that those two models are intended to work together. The available support guidance does not list every generation pairing, so do not guess.
- Check iPadOS. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Magic Keyboard for iPad Air requires iPadOS 18.3 or later, and Apple recommends updating to the latest available iPadOS.
- Disconnect the keyboard. Remove the iPad from the keyboard before cleaning.
- Clean both connectors. Use only a soft, lint-free cloth on the Smart Connector on the keyboard and the Smart Connector on the back or edge of the iPad.
- Remove the extra cover. Take off any other iPad case or cover when using Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard Folio.
- Reconnect directly. Seat the iPad on the Magic Keyboard so the Smart Connector surfaces align.
- Test both inputs. Try typing in a text field and moving the trackpad.
- Restart if needed. If the keyboard does not respond immediately after reconnection, restart the iPad and test again.
- Escalate with accurate details. If the keyboard still does not work, contact Apple Support and provide the model pair, iPadOS version, and completed steps.
How to avoid a wrong diagnosis
Do not assume every “Magic Keyboard” is the same accessory
The name alone is not enough to establish compatibility. Different iPad Air generations and keyboard versions can have different requirements, and the available Apple guidance does not reproduce the full pairing matrix. A precise model check is therefore a prerequisite, not an optional detail.

Do not treat iPadOS 18.3 as an optional update
For Magic Keyboard for iPad Air, iPadOS 18.3 is Apple’s stated minimum. If the iPad is running an earlier release, update it before drawing conclusions from connection tests. If the iPad cannot install the required release, compatibility information and Apple Support are the appropriate next checks.
Do not clean the connectors with improvised materials
The instruction is for a soft, lint-free cloth. A paper towel, abrasive pad, liquid cleaner, or sharp object is not part of Apple’s published procedure. Avoid adding a new risk while trying to solve the original connection problem.

Do not buy a replacement keyboard as the first response
Cleaning, removing an extra cover, updating iPadOS, reconnecting, and restarting are the supported checks to complete first. Apple’s guidance does not say that continued failure proves the keyboard needs replacement, so a purchase would be a guess rather than a confirmed remedy.

When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple Support after you have verified the exact models, installed the required iPadOS version where possible, cleaned both Smart Connectors with a soft lint-free cloth, removed any additional case or cover, reconnected the keyboard, and restarted the iPad. Give support a concise record:
- the exact iPad Air model or generation;
- the exact Magic Keyboard model;
- the iPadOS version shown in Software Update or the iPad’s system information;
- whether typing, trackpad input, or both are affected;
- whether another case or cover was removed;
- whether cleaning and reseating changed the behavior; and
- whether the iPad was restarted after reconnection.
This information lets support distinguish an unverified compatibility question from a problem that persists after Apple’s published procedure. The Apple Support article, “If you can’t connect your iPad to your Magic Keyboard, Magic Keyboard Folio, Smart Keyboard or Smart Keyboard Folio” (accessed October 13, 2026), is the source for the iPadOS requirement and the connector-cleaning, case-removal, reconnection, and restart sequence.
