A Lightning payment that appears stuck is not automatically lost, and a failed attempt is not automatically proof that the invoice is invalid. First establish the payment’s final state: in flight, succeeded or failed. Do not send a second payment while the original is in flight. Retry only after the wallet or node reports a final failure, and only after checking the invoice’s recipient, amount and expiry.
This guide separates the safe steps for ordinary wallet users from diagnostics for people operating their own Lightning node. It also explains why routes fail, what an HTLC timeout means, and how Taproot Assets errors differ from standard Lightning payments.
What the three payment states mean
Lightning software tracks each attempt as a state rather than judging it from how long the screen has been waiting. LND’s payment-tracking interface, TrackPaymentV2, distinguishes the following outcomes:

A slow display is not itself a failure signal. Lightning Labs’ Builder’s Guide states: “Each Lightning payment is atomic, meaning it is either completed or failed in full.” Atomicity protects the payment from being partially completed, but it does not guarantee that an HTLC will resolve immediately when a node, route or recipient is unavailable.

Safe troubleshooting for a normal wallet
Use this sequence before contacting support or attempting another payment. The order matters: status and invoice checks prevent most duplicate-payment mistakes.
1. Open the payment details and record the identifiers
Open the transaction or payment-history entry in your wallet and note its displayed state, time, amount, destination and payment hash. Wallet labels vary, but the detail view normally appears by selecting the payment from Activity, Payments or a similar history screen. If the wallet offers a payment lookup or tracking action, use it rather than starting a new payment.
Keep the payment hash and timestamp available for support. Do not post an invoice, payment request, account identifier or private channel information in a public forum; send only the minimum needed through the wallet or merchant’s private support channel.
2. If it succeeded, do not pay again
A successful payment has already fulfilled the invoice’s payment condition. If the merchant’s page still shows “unpaid,” first allow its system time to update, then contact the merchant privately with the payment hash or proof supplied by your wallet. A second payment can create a genuine duplicate charge even though the first payment was valid.
3. If it is in flight, keep the original attempt open
Do not treat a pending spinner, a delayed notification or a temporarily offline recipient as permission to retry. When an HTLC is locked in along the route, the receiver must reveal the payment preimage for settlement. If that does not happen, or a forwarding node goes offline, the HTLC can resolve only through the protocol’s timeout process. Starting another payment before the first one reaches a final state can leave you with two valid payments if both eventually settle.

Check the same payment entry periodically. If the wallet’s own stated monitoring window passes without a final state, contact wallet support with the amount, time, invoice or payment hash and current status. Support can determine whether the wallet is still tracking the attempt; do not close or delete the record merely to make the interface look clear.
4. If it failed, confirm that the failure is final
Some interfaces briefly show an error while they are still processing route alternatives. Wait for the payment record to settle into a terminal failed state rather than relying on a transient toast message. Once the record is final, that particular attempt will not be reattempted automatically by LND.

A final failure does not establish that the invoice is bad. It can reflect a route that lacked usable directional liquidity, a disabled channel, fee limits or a temporary change in network conditions. Complete the invoice checks below before creating a new payment.
5. Verify the invoice before trying again
Lightning invoices encode the destination, requested amount and validity information. Compare all three with what you intended to pay:
- Recipient: Confirm that the invoice came from the intended merchant, person or service. Treat an invoice copied from an untrusted message as suspect.
- Amount: Ensure that the amount shown by the wallet matches the expected charge. Do not override a mismatch just to make a payment go through.
- Validity: Check whether the invoice has expired. An expired request cannot be made valid by retrying it.
If the amount or recipient is wrong, the request is expired, or the receiving service says it cannot find the invoice, ask for a fresh invoice. Verify the replacement before paying. On the recipient side, an invoice can be looked up by its payment hash, so support may ask for that hash when investigating an apparently missing payment.

6. Retry once after the checks pass
After a final failure and a successful invoice verification, a new attempt can be reasonable. LND pathfinding uses previous payment successes and failures to guide later route selection, and Lightning Labs notes that payments do not necessarily succeed on the first attempt. A different route, changed liquidity or a recovered channel can therefore make a later attempt succeed.

Retrying is different from duplicating an in-flight payment: the original must be in a terminal failed state, not merely slow. If the new attempt fails too, stop repeating the same request and contact the wallet or recipient support team with both payment hashes and their final states.
Why a route can fail even when it looks possible
Lightning nodes advertise channel capacity and forwarding fees, but the network does not publicly disclose the exact balance distribution on each side of every channel. A route can therefore appear to have enough total capacity while lacking enough directional balance for your particular send.
For example, a channel may have substantial total capacity but most of that balance may sit on the side needed to receive rather than send. A forwarding node can also be temporarily offline, a channel can be disabled, or the required fee can exceed the wallet’s limit. These conditions produce errors such as “no route” without proving that the invoice or recipient is invalid.
Mission Control in LND records earlier route successes and failures to improve subsequent pathfinding. Those observations are time-sensitive: payments move liquidity, channels reconnect, and a route that failed earlier may become usable later, while a route that worked before may no longer have the required outbound balance.

How to handle a payment that remains stuck
Understand the HTLC resolution
An HTLC (hashed time-locked contract) is the conditional transfer used along a Lightning route. Once it is locked in, the receiver settles it by revealing the preimage that matches the invoice’s payment hash. If the preimage is not revealed, the conditions do not remain open forever; the time-lock eventually permits the funds to return through the protocol.
That timeout path is why a genuinely stuck payment may remain unresolved longer than a normal failed attempt. The wallet cannot safely pretend that the funds are available for a second payment while the original conditional transfer is still outstanding.
What you can do as a wallet user
- Leave the original payment record intact and keep the wallet connected to its normal network services.
- Check the payment state periodically instead of pressing Pay again.
- Confirm that your wallet has not reported a later success notification for the same payment.
- If the wallet’s documented monitoring period expires with no final result, contact its support team. Include the amount, timestamp, invoice or payment hash and the exact state shown.
There is no safe consumer shortcut that forces an HTLC to settle immediately. Do not publish the invoice or private account details while asking for help; provide them only to the legitimate wallet or merchant support channel.
Reading common failure messages

Taproot Assets: two implementation-specific errors
Taproot Assets payments add asset-specific routing requirements. The following guidance applies to LND Taproot Assets, not automatically to every standard Bitcoin Lightning wallet.

The Taproot Assets guide associates this error with a disabled channel or insufficient liquidity. An operator should inspect local channels and check both the asset capacity and the satoshi capacity needed to carry the transfer. A channel can have enough of one resource while lacking the other.

FAILURE_REASON_INCORRECT_PAYMENT_DETAILS
This error can occur when the asset invoice requires a hop hint for an asset-specific channel and the sender tries to route through another channel. When the invoice supplies an applicable hop hint, the sender should honor it. Do not apply this implementation-specific remedy to an ordinary Lightning invoice unless the wallet documentation identifies the same requirement.
Additional diagnostics for Lightning node operators
Node operators can inspect conditions that ordinary wallet users cannot see. These checks are operational remedies, not instructions to buy a particular service.
Inspect channel state and direction
Review the channels that a failed payment could have used. Check whether each channel is active, whether the local and remote balances support an outbound send, and whether a policy change or fee limit is rejecting the route. The relevant question is not only “How much capacity does this channel have?” but “How much usable balance is on my side in the direction of this payment?”

Check liquidity after recent payments
Channel balances shift whenever payments move through the network. A node that could send an amount earlier may no longer have enough outbound liquidity after other forwards, while incoming payments can improve that direction. Compare the current balance with the amount and fees required by the invoice.
Use pathfinding history appropriately
LND’s Mission Control uses prior successes and failures to influence route selection. Treat its observations as a changing signal rather than a permanent verdict: stale failures can describe a channel that has recovered, and a previously successful path can become unusable after liquidity moves.
Restore or obtain liquidity when necessary
If the channel is active but lacks outbound balance, the operator may need to rebalance channels or obtain additional liquidity. If a channel is disabled or a peer is offline, correcting that channel condition takes priority over repeatedly retrying the payment. Record the payment hash and the route or error details so that a later test can be compared with the original failure.
Prevention checklist
- Confirm the recipient and amount on the invoice before approving payment.
- Use a current invoice rather than reusing an old request whose validity is uncertain.
- Keep the wallet connected long enough to receive a final success or failure state.
- When a payment is pending, monitor that same record instead of opening a second attempt.
- After a final failure, make at most a reasoned retry following invoice verification; repeated blind retries add confusion without fixing liquidity or channel problems.
- For node operations, monitor channel activity and directional balances, not just advertised total capacity.
- Keep payment hashes and timestamps private when requesting support.
Bottom line
Check the state first. A succeeded payment should not be repeated, an in-flight payment should be left to settle or time out, and only a final failed attempt is normally safe to retry. Before that retry, verify the invoice’s recipient, amount and expiry. If failures continue, the cause is often route availability or directional liquidity rather than a bad invoice; node operators can investigate channels and rebalance, while wallet users should provide the payment hash and final state to legitimate support.
