Most Kindle update failures are caused by a Wi‑Fi connection problem, an unsupported router setting, or downloading firmware for the wrong Kindle model. Start by identifying the exact e-reader model, reconnecting it to a compatible network, and checking Amazon’s model-specific software page. If the wireless download still fails, transfer the correct update file from a computer and start Update Your Kindle from Settings.
This guide applies to Kindle e-readers, not the Kindle mobile or desktop apps. The menu labels and firmware file depend on the Kindle generation, so do not use an update intended for another model.
First, confirm that you have a Kindle e-reader update problem
Kindle e-readers normally download and install software automatically while connected wirelessly. Amazon describes the normal behavior as: “Software updates automatically download and install on your Kindle when connected wirelessly.” See the Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page for the live model list and download links.

1. Identify the exact Kindle model and generation
Amazon publishes a separate firmware file for each supported Kindle model and generation. “Paperwhite” or “Oasis” alone may not be specific enough; several generations use different files. Check the model name and generation on the device or its Amazon account listing before downloading anything.
Use the official model list
- Open Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page.
- Find the exact model and generation shown for your device.
- Note the version installed on the Kindle and the version listed for that model.
- Download only the file linked in that model’s entry.
Older Kindles can have additional prerequisites or instructions for moving from an earlier release. Follow the notes in the specific model entry instead of assuming that the newest number on the page applies to every Kindle.
Why a version number from another Kindle is not a target
At the time of the cited Amazon page’s 2026 listing, version 5.20.1 appeared for several models, including Kindle Scribe 3rd Generation, Kindle Colorsoft (1st Generation), Kindle Paperwhite 12th Generation (2024), and Kindle 11th Generation (2024). Other models showed version 5.19.2. Those figures are snapshots, not a universal Kindle version. Amazon can change the model list, so use the live entry for your device on the day you update.

| What you are comparing | Correct interpretation |
|---|---|
| Installed version on the Kindle | The software currently running on that specific e-reader. |
| Version on Amazon’s model entry | The release Amazon currently provides for that model and generation. |
| A version shown for a different model | Not a valid update target, even if its number is higher. |
2. Repair the Wi‑Fi connection before retrying
A wireless update cannot begin if the Kindle is offline, repeatedly losing its connection, or connected to a network it cannot use. Work through these checks in order.
Check the Kindle’s basic connection state
- Open the Kindle’s network controls and make sure Airplane Mode is off.
- Reconnect to the intended Wi‑Fi network and re-enter the network password carefully.
- Confirm that another phone or computer can reach the internet through that same network.
- Move the Kindle close to the router, away from thick walls and obvious sources of wireless interference.
- Restart the Kindle and restart the router. Wait about two minutes for the router to finish starting, then try the update again.
If other devices also cannot get online, the problem is broader than the Kindle. Amazon advises contacting your internet service provider when multiple devices fail to connect.

Check band and security compatibility
Kindle Wi‑Fi support is not identical across generations. Amazon states that “Kindle devices don’t support 6 GHz Wi‑Fi bands.” Amazon also says Kindle devices released before 2021 do not support 5 GHz or WPA3 encryption. Do not apply that pre-2021 limitation to newer models without checking the model documentation.
| Router setting or condition | What to know | Practical test |
|---|---|---|
| 6 GHz Wi‑Fi | Not supported by Kindle devices. | Connect the Kindle to a 2.4 GHz or otherwise supported network. |
| 5 GHz Wi‑Fi | Kindles released before 2021 do not support it. | Use the router’s 2.4 GHz network for an older Kindle. |
| WPA3 encryption | Kindles released before 2021 do not support it. | Use a compatible security mode or a separate older-device network. |
| Weak or crowded signal | Downloads may fail or stop partway through. | Move next to the router and reduce interference. |

The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use a phone hotspot as a diagnostic
- Enable a hotspot on a phone with working cellular data.
- Connect the Kindle to that hotspot, keeping the phone nearby and powered.
- Retry the software check or download.
If the update works over the hotspot, the Kindle’s Wi‑Fi hardware and software are probably functioning; concentrate on the home router’s band, security mode, signal, or internet service. If it fails on both the home network and the hotspot, continue with model and manual-file checks.
Handle public Wi‑Fi sign-in pages
Hotel, library, school, and other public networks may require a browser sign-in page before allowing internet access. If the portal does not appear automatically, open a simple website in the Kindle’s browser and complete the network sign-in. An apparently connected Kindle may still be blocked from downloading until that step is complete.
3. Check whether the Kindle is already current
Compare the software version shown in the Kindle’s device information with the version in the exact model entry on Amazon’s update page. A Kindle that is already at the listed version has no newer package to install, even if another Kindle model displays a different number.

Do not treat a failed notification as proof that the firmware is outdated. The notification can be delayed by a poor connection, and the model list can change after the Kindle was last checked. The model-specific Amazon page is the authoritative place to decide whether an update is available.
4. Manually transfer the update from a computer
If the latest software does not download automatically, Amazon’s documented alternative is to connect the Kindle to a computer and transfer the file. Amazon summarizes this route as: “If the latest software doesn’t download automatically to your device, update it manually by connecting your device to a computer.”
Download and copy the correct file
- On a computer, open Amazon’s Kindle E‑Reader Software Updates page.
- Select the exact Kindle model and generation, then download the update file linked there.
- Turn on the Kindle and connect it to the computer with the included charging cable.
- Wait for the Kindle to appear as a removable drive, then drag the downloaded update file onto the drive named Kindle.
- Wait for the file transfer to finish. Safely eject the Kindle from the computer. On a Kindle Scribe, use the on-screen Disconnect option when it appears.
- Disconnect the cable only after the eject or Disconnect action has completed.
The cited Amazon instructions do not tell you to rename or unzip the file. Do not install a file intended for another model. A wrong file can leave the update unavailable or prevent installation.
Start the installation on the Kindle
- From the Kindle home screen, tap Menu, then Settings.
- Tap Menu again.
- Choose Update Your Kindle.
- Confirm with OK.
- Leave the Kindle undisturbed while it displays Your Kindle is Updating.
Amazon says the Kindle restarts automatically when the update finishes. Do not disconnect power or attempt to copy another file while the update screen is active. For the official sequence, see Manually Update Your Kindle E‑Reader Software.
Computer and cable conditions
The included charging cable is the intended transfer cable. You may need a replacement only if the original is missing or cannot transfer data; verify that any replacement supports data transfer and has the connector required by your Kindle. A cable that charges but carries no data will not make the Kindle drive appear.

Amazon notes an additional condition for Kindle Scribe owners using a Mac running OS X 10.7 or later: additional software may be required to transfer files. If the Scribe charges but does not mount as a drive, check the requirements in Amazon’s manual-update instructions before trying another update file.
5. If “Update Your Kindle” is unavailable
An unavailable or disabled update command usually means the Kindle does not see a valid update file in the right place, or the device is already at the version Amazon lists. Check each item once, in this order:
- The file came from the exact model-and-generation entry on Amazon’s page.
- The transfer completed before you ejected the Kindle.
- The file is on the top level of the drive named Kindle, not inside a folder.
- You disconnected the cable safely and returned to the home screen before opening Settings.
- The installed version is lower than the version currently listed for the device.
- The Kindle has enough battery to complete the process.
If the option is still missing, reconnect the Kindle, remove the incorrectly transferred file if necessary, download the model-specific file again, and repeat the transfer. Do not substitute a file from a similar-looking Kindle generation.

Keep the Kindle powered
Large downloads and update activity can increase battery use. Amazon recommends keeping the e-reader charged through the update period. Plug it in before retrying and leave it connected while the update runs unless Amazon’s instructions for your model say otherwise. Battery guidance is available in Conserve Your Kindle E‑Reader Battery.
Allow the post-update indexing period
After a successful update and automatic restart, Amazon recommends plugging the Kindle in and letting it sit overnight so books can index. During indexing, the device may appear busy and battery use may be higher. Avoid judging the update as failed solely because the library is still processing immediately after the restart.

Recheck the model and file when the update loops or stops
An update that repeatedly returns to the normal home screen without changing the version should be treated as a file-selection or transfer problem first. Compare the installed and listed versions again, download a fresh copy from the exact model entry, copy it to the Kindle drive, safely eject, and start the on-device command again.
7. Resolve registration or sign-in errors that appear with the update
Sometimes an update complaint is accompanied by a message that the Kindle cannot register or sign in. Amazon’s registration guidance says to verify the device time, Wi‑Fi connection, current software, and Amazon credentials, then restart the Kindle. Work through those checks before repeating registration.
- Check that the Kindle displays the correct date and time.
- Reconnect to a working Wi‑Fi network, or test the phone hotspot described earlier.
- Confirm that the Kindle is running the current software listed for its exact model.
- Enter the correct Amazon account credentials.
- Restart the Kindle and try registration again.
See Amazon’s Get Help to Register Your Kindle E‑Reader instructions for the registration-specific checks.
8. Choose the right recovery path
| Symptom | Most likely next action |
|---|---|
| Kindle cannot see any network | Turn off Airplane Mode, re-enter credentials, restart the Kindle and router, then test a hotspot. |
| Home Wi‑Fi fails but hotspot works | Adjust the router’s supported band or security settings and improve signal strength. |
| Automatic download never starts, but Wi‑Fi works | Check the model-specific version and use the manual computer-transfer route. |
| Computer does not show a Kindle drive | Try a known data-capable cable, another USB port, and the model-specific computer requirements. |
| “Update Your Kindle” is disabled | Verify the exact model file, transfer location, completed copy, safe eject, and version comparison. |
| Registration fails after the update | Correct the device time, verify Wi‑Fi, credentials, and software, then restart. |
| Several devices cannot connect to the internet | Contact the internet service provider after restarting the network equipment. |
9. When to consider a factory reset or support
Do not factory-reset a Kindle as an early response to a failed update. Amazon places that step after the Wi‑Fi troubleshooting sequence has failed. A reset removes locally stored settings and content, so first complete the model check, compatible-network tests, manual transfer, and registration checks above. If those steps do not resolve the problem, follow Amazon’s current support flow for your model rather than using an update file from an unofficial source.
A Kindle that cannot connect to any compatible network, cannot mount over multiple known data cables and computers, or repeatedly rejects the model-specific file may need device-specific support. Have the exact model, installed software version, network test results, and the point at which the process failed ready when contacting Amazon.
