Fix a silent or misbehaving home theater by tracing the signal path from the source to the speakers. First identify whether every source is silent, only the TV return is silent, the sound is ahead of or behind the picture, or one or more surround channels are missing. Then verify input selection, mute and volume, cable ports, audio-output settings, speaker configuration, and playback mode in that order. The exact menu names vary by model, so keep the TV, soundbar, or AV receiver manual open while you work.

Start with the symptom and signal path

A home theater can fail at several independent points: the source device, the TV’s audio output, an HDMI ARC/eARC link, an optical cable, the receiver’s input or output routing, amplifier assignment, speaker wiring, or the playback mode. A quick classification prevents you from changing unrelated settings.

What you hear Most useful first checks Likely branch
No sound from anything Power, selected input, mute, volume, speaker output, and cable connections System-wide routing, power, or connection problem
No sound only when watching TV apps or broadcast TV TV external-speaker selection, ARC/eARC ports, HDMI control, and digital-audio output TV-to-audio-system return path
Sound is late or early Test every source and identify the direction of the mismatch Source processing, TV processing, or A/V-sync setting
One surround speaker is silent Wire termination, speaker enabled in setup, amplifier assignment, and test tone Channel connection or configuration
Only the subwoofer is silent Subwoofer power, cable, enable setting, level, and crossover configuration Subwoofer connection or bass-management setting
Front speakers work but surrounds do not Playback mode and the source’s channel format Stereo/virtual/direct mode or two-channel content

Write down which source and output are affected before changing a setting. For example, “streaming app through TV speakers” and “game console through receiver” are separate paths. A fault that appears on only one path is usually isolated more quickly than a system-wide failure.

Fix complete loss of sound

1. Confirm power, source, mute, and volume

  1. Turn on the TV and the soundbar or AV receiver. Confirm that the receiver is not in standby and that any powered subwoofer has its own power indicator.
  2. Select the input that actually carries the program: the receiver input connected to the disc player, console, set-top box, or streaming device. If you use TV apps or broadcast TV, select the TV/Audio Return input on the audio system.
  3. Clear mute on both devices. Raise the audio system’s volume while watching its on-screen display or front-panel level. Also check that the TV has not muted its external-audio output.
  4. On the TV, choose the external audio system, receiver, or HDMI ARC/eARC output instead of internal TV speakers. Sony’s TV guidance includes checking the selected speaker output and physical connections; its model-specific labels differ by television. See Sony’s TV-sound troubleshooting guidance.

If the receiver’s own menus or built-in test tone are also silent, stay on the receiver side of the diagnosis. If the receiver produces a test tone but TV programs do not, the problem is upstream in the TV return or source path.

Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

2. Check the TV-to-audio connection

For HDMI ARC or eARC, both the TV and audio system must support the feature. Plug the cable into the TV’s socket explicitly marked HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC, and into the audio system’s port marked HDMI OUT ARC/eARC. A regular HDMI input on either device will not provide the return channel. Confirm HDMI control/CEC and ARC or TV-audio settings are enabled on both devices. Sony explains the port and compatibility requirements in its ARC/eARC no-sound article.

If only one device supports ARC/eARC, use an alternative that both devices support, such as optical audio where available. Optical does not provide HDMI-CEC control or the same return-channel capabilities, so select optical as the TV’s digital-audio output and the corresponding optical input on the receiver or soundbar.

With an AV receiver between a source and TV, check two separate selections:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The receiver’s HDMI-audio output or listening mode, which determines whether the receiver processes the sound or passes it to the TV.
  • The TV’s audio-output choice, which determines whether its speakers, ARC/eARC, optical, or another output is active.

Receiver manuals often expose these as separate options. Denon’s AVR-S640H troubleshooting page, for example, lists HDMI audio output, speaker configuration, and connection checks as distinct causes.

3. Power-reset the HDMI chain

A reset can clear a failed HDMI handshake or control state, but follow the sequence recommended for your models. A practical isolation sequence is:

  1. Turn off the TV and audio system.
  2. Disconnect their power and, if the manufacturer instructs, disconnect the HDMI cable.
  3. Wait, reconnect the cable and power, then start the TV first.
  4. Start the receiver or soundbar and reselect the ARC/eARC or TV-audio input.
  5. Install device software updates when the manufacturer recommends them, then test again.

Menu names and the required wait time vary. Sony’s ARC troubleshooting procedure describes model-dependent reset and connection checks.

4. Isolate HDMI and cable faults

Temporarily disconnect other HDMI devices from the TV and receiver. A second device can create a CEC interaction or expose a marginal cable, making the ARC link appear dead. Test the TV and audio system with only the essential connection attached.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace a visibly damaged, intermittent, or suspect HDMI cable with a new or known-working cable. Connect directly to the marked ARC/eARC ports; remove adapters, extenders, and unnecessarily long runs while diagnosing. For eARC, Sony recommends a Premium HDMI cable; verify the exact cable class in both devices’ documentation. A new cable is a legitimate test, not a guaranteed cure: source selection, compatibility, output settings, and speaker configuration must still be correct.

Restore TV sound over ARC or eARC

ARC (Audio Return Channel) sends TV audio back to an audio system over the HDMI cable. eARC is the newer version with broader audio-format capability. Neither works merely because a cable is plugged into an HDMI socket: the TV and audio system must both support the feature and use their labeled ports.

Port and setting checklist

  • TV: use the HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC.
  • Receiver or soundbar: use HDMI OUT labeled ARC or eARC, not an HDMI input.
  • Enable HDMI control/CEC and ARC/eARC in the TV and audio-system menus.
  • Set the TV’s speaker or audio output to the external system, not TV speakers.
  • Select the receiver’s TV-audio/ARC input if it does not switch automatically.
  • If using eARC, leave eARC on Auto unless the manual specifies another setting, and use a cable class the equipment supports.

When only TV apps are silent but a device connected directly to the receiver plays normally, concentrate on the TV’s digital-audio output, eARC, and passthrough controls. Sony’s ARC/eARC article and its ARC connection guide show examples of these controls; labels are not universal.

Fix audio delay and lip-sync

1. Determine what is late and where

Watch the same type of content from more than one source: for example, a TV app, a set-top box, and a game console. Establish whether the sound arrives after the picture (audio is late) or before it (audio is early). Record whether the mismatch occurs on every source or only one. The direction matters: adding an audio delay to sound that is already late makes the error worse.

Observation What it suggests Next test
Every source has the same offset Common TV, receiver, or soundbar processing Use the audio system’s A/V Sync or Audio Delay control; then check TV output settings
Only one HDMI source is affected That source’s processing, format, or route through the TV Connect it directly to a receiver input if supported and compare
TV apps are affected, direct receiver sources are not TV processing or ARC/eARC passthrough Review TV A/V sync, eARC, and passthrough settings
Sound is early Adding delay to audio may worsen the mismatch Look for a control that delays the picture or reduces audio processing, if the model provides one

2. Adjust the appropriate sync control

  1. Open the audio system’s A/V Sync, Audio Delay, or similarly named control, if available.
  2. Make a small change, replay the same scene, and note whether lip-sync improves. Change one device at a time so you know which control helped.
  3. For TV-routed audio, consult the TV manual for A/V sync, digital-audio output, eARC, and passthrough options. Sony documents these as model-specific examples in its HDMI-source sync article and TV/audio-system sync article.
  4. If the source is connected through the TV and remains delayed, connect that source directly to the receiver or home theater system, provided the receiver accepts its video and audio formats. Compare the result.
  5. Update the source, TV, and audio-system software when supported, then retest the same content and format.

Optical connections can also have a delay. Use the receiver or soundbar’s Audio/Video Sync or Audio Delay control if present and follow that model’s manual. Do not assume an optical cable itself sets the correct timing.

Restore missing surround speakers or channels

1. Inspect every speaker connection

  1. Power off the receiver before touching speaker wires.
  2. At both ends of the affected cable, confirm the conductor is fully inserted into the correct positive or negative terminal and that no loose strands touch an adjacent terminal.
  3. Confirm the wire is connected to the intended channel: surround left, surround right, center, front height, or another label shown by the receiver.
  4. In the receiver’s speaker setup, make sure that channel is enabled and not configured as None or Absent.
  5. Run the receiver’s channel test tone or level-check routine, if provided, and listen at a moderate volume.

A single silent speaker does not prove that the speaker has failed. Denon’s AVR-S640H troubleshooting guidance identifies loose connections and a speaker configured as absent as possible causes.

2. Select a mode that actually uses surround channels

Stereo and some virtual or direct modes intentionally use only the front speakers and subwoofer, or bypass surround processing. Select a mode that routes the source to the channels you expect. A two-channel program may not contain discrete surround information; depending on the receiver, an appropriate surround upmix mode may be required to derive sound for the rear speakers.

Compare the receiver’s displayed input format with its playback mode. If the display says two-channel PCM and the receiver is in a pure stereo/direct mode, silent surrounds can be normal. If a multichannel source still produces only fronts after the mode and wiring checks, investigate the source’s audio-output format and the receiver’s input assignment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Diagnose a silent subwoofer

  • Confirm the subwoofer’s power switch and indicator, then raise its own level only enough for testing.
  • Check the subwoofer cable at the receiver’s subwoofer pre-out and the subwoofer’s line-level input.
  • Enable the subwoofer in the receiver’s speaker configuration and verify that the front-speaker/bass-management settings allow low-frequency output.
  • Use a test tone or bass-rich, known multichannel program; a quiet scene is not proof of a fault.

Exact crossover, LFE, and level menu behavior varies by receiver. Use the model manual rather than copying a setting from another system.

4. Swap components only within safe limits

If one channel remains silent after the cable and configuration checks, use the manufacturer’s permitted diagnostic procedure to distinguish a speaker, cable, or receiver-channel problem. Do not open a powered receiver, soundbar, or subwoofer as a routine homeowner step. If the test indicates an internal fault, stop swapping and use the manufacturer’s support or authorized repair route.

Choose the right connection while troubleshooting

Connection path What to verify Best isolation use
TV to receiver/soundbar by ARC/eARC Both devices support ARC/eARC; marked ports; HDMI control; TV output and receiver TV-audio input TV apps, broadcast TV, and devices routed through the TV
TV to receiver/soundbar by optical Optical cable seated; TV digital-audio output set to optical; correct receiver input; A/V sync control Systems where ARC/eARC is unavailable or unreliable
Source directly to receiver Receiver input assignment; HDMI audio output; video pass-through and supported formats Separating source or TV processing from the audio system

Direct source-to-receiver wiring can bypass TV processing, but only if the receiver supports the source’s video resolution and audio format. During diagnosis, use the shortest, simplest supported path; restore your preferred routing after the fault is identified.

When a replacement cable is justified

Replace an HDMI cable when it is damaged, intermittently loses the link, fails with a supported feature, or is unsuitable for the required ARC/eARC connection. Use a new or known-working cable, connect it directly to the labeled ports, and remove extenders and adapters while testing. Sony recommends a Premium HDMI cable for eARC; confirm the requirement in your equipment documentation.

Cable replacement should follow, not replace, checks of input selection, mute and volume, device compatibility, HDMI control, output routing, and speaker configuration. A cable cannot correct a receiver set to TV-speaker output or a surround channel configured as absent.

Escalate safely when basic checks fail

  • Save the exact symptom: affected source, connection type, whether sound is early or late, and which channels are silent.
  • Record the device models, firmware versions, cable path, receiver input mode, and relevant TV and receiver settings.
  • Restore only settings you changed during testing, then perform the manufacturer’s documented reset if advised.
  • Use the equipment maker’s support, service-center lookup, or authorized repair route. Denon’s Product Support page provides manuals, service-center information, and in-warranty and out-of-warranty repair guidance.
  • Do not open powered equipment or continue testing a cable or speaker that shows heat, damage, arcing, or a burning smell.

Final diagnostic checklist

  • Correct source/input selected on the TV and audio system.
  • TV and receiver/soundbar powered, unmuted, and set to an audible level.
  • TV output set to the external audio system rather than internal speakers.
  • ARC/eARC devices compatible and connected through the marked ports, with HDMI control enabled.
  • Optical systems set to optical output and the matching receiver input.
  • Receiver HDMI-audio output routed to the receiver or TV as intended.
  • Delay tested across multiple sources, with early versus late sound identified before changing sync.
  • Speaker wires secure, channels enabled, amplifier assignment correct, and playback mode appropriate for the source.
  • Subwoofer powered, connected, enabled, and given a signal that contains bass.
  • Known-good cable tested directly, without unnecessary adapters or extenders.
