If your external monitor stays black after your computer wakes, first confirm the computer is active. Then check the monitor’s power and selected input, reseat the video cable at both ends, and test the display without any dock or hub. If the connection is sound, follow the Windows or macOS checks below. A monitor generally leaves standby when it detects a video signal, so a computer that has not actually resumed can leave the screen looking unresponsive.
Start with the symptom: is the computer awake, and what does the monitor show?
There are two devices to check: the computer and the monitor. A dark screen does not by itself tell you which one failed. The computer may still be asleep or hibernating; the monitor may have no power; it may be listening to a different input; or the video signal may be interrupted somewhere between the computer and display.
Move the mouse or press a keyboard key, then give the computer a moment to resume. Look for signs that the computer itself is active. If it is still asleep, wake it first. Dell’s general guidance explains that a monitor wakes when it detects a video signal from the computer, so a computer that remains asleep can leave the monitor in standby. Dell’s wake-from-sleep guidance describes this relationship.

Once the computer appears active, note what the monitor says, if anything. A “no signal” message indicates that the display is powered but is not receiving a usable video signal on its selected input. A completely dark screen may still be a signal problem, but first check that the monitor has power. These clues help choose the next check; they do not identify a particular faulty part on their own.

Pay attention to whether the monitor wakes after a fresh restart but not after ordinary sleep, and whether the fault happens every time or only occasionally. That timing can help you describe the problem to support. It does not prove that sleep settings, a driver, or any individual component is responsible, so continue with the connection checks before concluding that the monitor needs repair.
Check the monitor’s power and selected input
- Check the power connection. Confirm the monitor’s power cable is firmly connected at the display and at its power source. Check whether the power indicator is on. If it is not, unplug and reconnect the monitor’s power, then check the indicator again. Microsoft includes a monitor power reset among its external-display troubleshooting steps for Surface.
- Select the input that matches the cable. Use the monitor’s controls to choose the input actually in use, such as HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C. If the cable is connected to HDMI but the monitor is set to DisplayPort, it will not show the computer’s picture. Microsoft’s Surface guidance also calls out matching the monitor input to the connected port.
- Wait briefly after changing the input. Give the display a moment to detect the signal before moving on. If the screen remains blank or reports no signal, check the video connection rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
The indicator and on-screen message are useful distinctions. A power light that is off points first to checking the display’s power connection and source; a powered display that reports “no signal” points first to the selected input and video path. A light or message is a clue, not a complete diagnosis. Avoid buying replacement equipment based only on one screen message.
Reseat the cable and simplify the signal path
A home-office display setup may run through several links: the computer’s video-capable port, a cable or adapter, a dock or hub, and the monitor’s input. Any connection in that chain can prevent the display from receiving a signal. Check the simplest version of the setup first.

- Reseat the video cable at both ends. Disconnect it from the computer or dock and from the monitor, then reconnect it firmly. Make sure the cable is connected to the port you intend to use.
- Bypass the dock, hub, or dongle if possible. Connect the monitor directly to the computer. If it works directly, the problem is somewhere in the bypassed accessory path; this check does not by itself prove which accessory or setting is responsible. Microsoft recommends testing without accessories, and Apple likewise recommends a direct connection when troubleshooting a display connected through a hub or dock. See Microsoft’s Windows external-monitor steps and Apple’s external-display guidance.
- Try another compatible video cable. Use a cable that supports the connection you are making. If the replacement works while the original does not, the original cable may be faulty. Microsoft recommends trying another cable as a way to isolate the connection.
- Test another device or display if one is available. Connect the monitor to another system, or connect the computer to another display. A working combination can help narrow the fault to the computer, display, cable, or accessory path. Change one item at a time where practical so the result is useful.
USB-C and adapter-based connections
A USB-C-shaped port does not by itself establish that a computer can send video through it. Check the computer maker’s specifications for video output on the particular port. If the setup uses a USB-C adapter, Apple says the adapter must comply with the relevant DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt standard. The cable or adapter must also support the resolution and refresh rate you are trying to use. Apple’s guidance covers these connection requirements and display detection; Microsoft’s Surface support also advises checking port and cable compatibility.
If the display works at a lower resolution or refresh rate but not the requested mode, compatibility along the port, adapter, cable, and monitor path is worth checking. Do not assume that every adapter with the right-shaped connectors supports every display mode.

When testing a connection, change one part of the setup at a time. For example, keep the same computer and monitor but remove the dock; then, if needed, restore the dock and substitute a known-compatible cable. If you change the cable, port, input, and display mode all at once, a successful result may restore the screen without showing which change mattered. You do not need to purchase every possible replacement: borrow a compatible cable or test another display when available.
If you do need a replacement cable, first confirm the ports at both ends and the display mode you need. A cable that physically fits may still not be appropriate for the desired resolution or refresh rate. The same applies to a USB-C adapter: confirm that the computer port supports video output and that the adapter supports the monitor’s required mode. A new monitor or generic repair utility is not the first step for a screen that stopped waking; the connection and operating-system checks below are more targeted.

Use this decision table to choose the next check
| What you observe | Best next check | What the result helps isolate |
|---|---|---|
| The computer itself still appears asleep | Wake the computer with its mouse or keyboard and allow it time to resume. | Whether the monitor is simply waiting for the computer’s video signal. Dell explains that the monitor wakes when it detects that signal. |
| The monitor’s power indicator is off | Reseat the monitor power cable and check its power source. | Whether the display is receiving power. Microsoft’s Surface guidance recommends disconnecting and reconnecting monitor power. |
| The monitor is on but shows “no signal” | Verify the selected input, then reseat the video cable at both ends. | Whether the display is listening on the wrong input or the signal connection is loose. |
| The display is connected through a dock, hub, or dongle | Test a direct connection to the computer if possible. | Whether the accessory path is involved. Apple and Microsoft recommend simplifying the connection during diagnosis. |
| A direct connection works but the docked setup does not | Reconnect through the accessory path and check the adapter, cable, and port compatibility. | Whether the added dock, hub, dongle, or adapter path changes the result; it does not identify a specific failed component by itself. |
| The problem began after a Windows display-driver update | Consider rolling back the display driver; if rollback is unavailable, follow Microsoft’s Device Manager reinstall guidance. | Whether the issue is associated with the recent driver change. Use guidance for the specific graphics adapter as well. |
| The same problem persists after basic checks | Look up the exact computer and monitor model on the makers’ support sites. | Whether there is documented guidance for that particular model rather than a general connection fault. |
Use the table as a way to pick the next test, not as a list of guaranteed diagnoses. If you can reproduce the issue, compare the setup when it works with the setup when it fails: whether the computer resumed, what the monitor shows, whether the connection is direct or docked, and whether a different cable or port changes the result. These comparisons separate likely power, signal-path, accessory, operating-system, and model-specific questions without assuming one cause in advance.
Windows: check projection mode, reset graphics, then investigate the driver
These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11 external-monitor troubleshooting. Try them after confirming monitor power, input, and the physical connection, so a display-mode change is not mistaken for a cable fix.
- Choose the intended display mode. Press Windows+P and select the mode you want, such as Extend or Duplicate. If the computer is set to show the desktop on another display only, the external monitor may not show the expected picture. Microsoft includes this mode check in its Windows external-monitor troubleshooting guidance.
- Try the graphics-driver reset shortcut. If the setup worked before but stopped displaying after sleep, press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. Microsoft says this may reset the graphics driver in some cases. It is a troubleshooting attempt, not a guarantee that a driver or hardware fault will be repaired.
- Restart the PC. If the display still does not return, restart the computer and check whether the monitor receives a signal during or after startup.
- Review a recent driver change. If the problem started after a display-driver update, consider rolling back the display driver. If the rollback option is unavailable, Microsoft documents reinstalling the driver through Device Manager. Follow the computer or graphics-adapter maker’s instructions for the specific hardware rather than installing an unrelated driver.
If the monitor works during startup but loses signal only after the computer has been idle, record that detail when seeking support. It distinguishes the timing of the failure without establishing its cause.

Do not jump straight to a driver reinstall if a simple input or cable check has not been done. First verify that Windows is using the intended display mode and that the screen is receiving a signal. If the graphics-reset shortcut makes no difference, continue to restart and investigate a driver change only when the timing fits—for example, when the fault began after an update. A rollback or reinstall should follow Microsoft’s instructions and the device maker’s guidance for the graphics hardware in the computer.
macOS: reconnect, detect the display, and verify compatibility
- Reconnect the display and its power. Disconnect and reconnect the display cable and power source, then try waking the Mac. Check the monitor’s selected input as well.
- Open the display settings. Go to System Settings > Displays and use Detect Displays if that option is available. Apple’s external-display guidance describes reconnecting and detecting a display.
- Restart the Mac if detection still fails. After restarting, check Displays again and confirm whether the external screen is recognized.
- Test without a dock or hub. Connect the display directly to the Mac if possible. If you must use an adapter, check that the Mac port supports video output and that the adapter and cable support the display’s resolution and refresh rate. Apple notes the relevant DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt compliance for USB-C adapters.
- Check supported external displays and modes. Confirm the Mac model supports the number and type of external displays in the setup and that the chosen connection can carry the requested display mode. Apple’s support page provides guidance on display connection compatibility.
If macOS does not show the display in Displays settings, keep the diagnosis focused on whether the Mac can detect a signal through the selected port and connection. A direct connection removes the dock or hub from that test; checking the Mac model and adapter standards addresses compatibility. If the Mac recognizes the screen but it stays dark, also verify the monitor’s input and power rather than treating detection alone as proof that the whole signal path is working.
When basic troubleshooting does not fix it
Search the support site for the exact monitor model number and the symptom, then check the computer maker’s support page for the computer model. Model-specific issues exist, but one model’s documented fault is not a general explanation for every monitor that fails to wake.
For example, Dell documents a suspend/resume wake issue for the U2422HE associated with DDCCI communication during power-on. That report applies to that monitor-specific case; it should not be treated as the cause of a similar symptom on another display. See Dell’s U2422HE suspend/resume support article.
When contacting support, provide the exact computer and monitor models, operating system, connection type, whether a dock or adapter is involved, the monitor’s message or indicator state, and which direct-connection or alternate-cable checks changed the result. Those details help support distinguish a power issue, a missing signal, an accessory-path issue, an operating-system problem, or a model-specific condition.

Include whether the display wakes after restart, whether it fails only after sleep, and whether the computer itself appears to resume. Note the selected monitor input and the ports used on both ends. If you tried another cable, dock-free connection, computer, or display, report the outcome of each separately. These observations make it easier to reproduce the fault and avoid repeating checks that have already ruled out part of the signal path.

Why won’t my external monitor wake when my computer wakes?
The monitor generally needs to detect a video signal from the computer to leave standby. First confirm the computer actually resumed; then check monitor power and input, reseat the video cable at both ends, and test a direct connection without a dock or hub.
My monitor says “no signal” after sleep. What should I check first?
A “no signal” message means the monitor is powered but is not receiving a usable signal on its selected input. Confirm the input matches the cable, reseat both cable ends, and test another compatible cable or a direct connection if possible.
Could my dock or USB-C adapter be stopping the monitor from waking?
It can be part of the signal path, so bypass the dock or hub and connect directly to the computer when possible. For USB-C, confirm the computer port supports video output and that the adapter and cable support the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate; USB-C adapters should meet the applicable DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt standard.
What should I try in Windows if the cable checks do not help?
Press Windows+P and select the intended mode, such as Extend or Duplicate. You can also try Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B, which may reset the graphics driver in some cases, then restart. If the fault began after a driver update, consider rollback or Microsoft’s Device Manager reinstall steps.

How do I get macOS to detect an external monitor again?
Reconnect the display and its power, try waking the Mac, then open System Settings > Displays and use Detect Displays if available. Restart if detection still fails, and test directly connected rather than through a hub or dock.
Should I buy a new monitor or cable to fix a wake-from-sleep problem?
Do not start with a new monitor. Check power, input, connections, and the dock or hub first. If testing points to the cable, try another compatible one; confirm port, resolution, and refresh-rate support before buying a cable or adapter.
What information should I give monitor support?
Provide the exact computer and monitor models, operating system, connection type, any dock or adapter in use, the monitor’s indicator or message, and the results of direct-connection, alternate-cable, or alternate-display tests. Mention whether it fails only after sleep or also after startup.
