Fixing a guitar controller in Fortnite Festival starts with identifying what the game actually shows. A completely missing device, a guitar that appears only as a normal controller, and a missing Pro Lead or Pro Bass part are different problems. First enable Festival’s Always Display Pro Parts setting, then verify the guitar’s exact model, platform and required receiver against Epic Games’ dated compatibility list. Only consider replacement hardware after those checks.
Identify the exact symptom before changing anything
“Fortnite does not recognize my guitar” can describe several situations. Match the visible symptom to the appropriate fix instead of assuming every failure is a broken instrument.
| What you see | Most likely category | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The guitar does not appear to Fortnite at all | Unsupported model, platform mismatch, missing receiver, pairing problem or a hardware fault | Check the exact model and connection requirements, then test the connection outside the song-selection screen |
| The guitar moves menus or plays ordinary controller inputs, but Fortnite labels it as a standard controller | The game is receiving generic controller input rather than identifying a supported guitar peripheral | Verify platform support and the required wireless adapter; do not treat a missing Pro part alone as proof of hardware failure |
| The guitar works, but Pro Lead or Pro Bass is not listed | Festival display setting, unsupported identification state or a temporary game issue | Turn on Always Display Pro Parts and apply the setting |
| Only one fret, such as green, stops responding during local multiplayer | Possible known Festival input bug | Compare the symptom with Epic’s v42.00 release-note issue and check newer notes for a resolution |
Pro Lead and Pro Bass are not exclusive proof that a guitar peripheral has been detected. Fortnite Festival can expose those parts for supported keyboard-and-mouse or standard-controller input, and a guitar can sometimes be usable for non-Pro parts. Conversely, a supported guitar should normally make the Pro choices visible when you select an instrument part.

- Enter the Fortnite lobby and select Festival Main Stage.
- Open the profile or settings menu.
- Choose the Game tab.
- Open the Festival section.
- Turn on Always Display Pro Parts.
- Select Apply, then return to song selection and choose the instrument part again.
Epic says Pro Lead and Pro Bass should automatically be visible when a supported guitar controller is connected. The setting is the manual route when they are not. It changes whether the choices are displayed; it does not make an unsupported guitar compatible and does not repair a disconnected receiver.
If the options appear after this change, test a song in Pro Lead or Pro Bass and check every fret, strum input and whammy control. A visible part confirms that Festival is offering the mode, not that every physical control is functioning.
Check the guitar’s model, platform and connection method
Compatibility is model-specific. “Rock Band guitar,” “Guitar Hero guitar” or “wireless guitar” is not precise enough because different generations use different radio hardware, USB devices and console protocols. Record the full model name printed on the instrument or its packaging, the console or PC edition you are using, and whether the connection is USB, Bluetooth or a proprietary wireless receiver.

| Device listed by Epic | Platforms shown in the April 2024 table | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation RIFFMASTER | PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 | Confirm the exact PlayStation version and current Festival support before purchase |
| Xbox RIFFMASTER | Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC | PC behavior depends on the connection method and current Windows/Fortnite support |
| Rock Band 4 Fender Jaguar | Specific platform entries in Epic’s table | Use the exact model and platform row; do not generalize to every Fender or Rock Band guitar |
| Rock Band 4 Fender Stratocaster | Specific platform entries in Epic’s table | Verify the platform row and receiver requirement for your edition |
For the Xbox Rock Band 4 Fender models, Epic specifies the Microsoft Xbox One Wireless Adapter for Windows 10 in the PC column. That adapter is not a universal guitar dongle. It is relevant only to the Xbox Fender models for which Epic lists it, and it does not turn a PlayStation-only or otherwise unsupported instrument into a PC-compatible one.
On a console
- Use the console family for which the guitar was designed. A PlayStation wireless guitar and an Xbox wireless guitar are not interchangeable merely because their shells look similar.
- Pair the instrument using the manufacturer’s documented procedure, then connect its receiver if the model requires one.
- Remove other controllers temporarily while testing so you can tell which device is supplying input.
- Test the guitar in Fortnite’s lobby and song-selection screens, then in a short practice or song session.
On Windows PC
- Identify whether the guitar requires a proprietary receiver. A PC may show a receiver as connected while still lacking the driver or protocol needed for Festival.
- For the Xbox Rock Band 4 Fender models named in Epic’s table, use the specified Xbox One Wireless Adapter for Windows 10.
- Do not infer PC support from console support. The Xbox RIFFMASTER, for example, is listed for PC, while other models have platform-specific entries.
- Close remapping utilities and other programs that may capture the controller while you test Fortnite. If you use such software, test once with it disabled so the game receives the original device identity.
When Fortnite sees a standard controller instead of a guitar
A guitar that navigates menus may still be communicating only generic button presses. Festival’s Pro modes depend on the game recognizing a supported guitar profile, not merely receiving inputs from a device shaped like a guitar.
- Disconnect the guitar and its receiver, fully close Fortnite, reconnect the receiver directly to the console or PC, and start the game again.
- Check that the receiver belongs to the same platform and guitar family. A receiver from another generation or console can power on without providing compatible input.
- Remove USB hubs and extension cables during the test. Connect the receiver directly, then try another USB port if the platform provides one.
- Confirm that the guitar is assigned to the player who is entering Festival. In local multiplayer, a guitar assigned to a different profile can appear to work while the expected player sees only ordinary controller options.
- Return to Always Display Pro Parts, apply the setting, and re-enter song selection.
If Fortnite still treats the device as a standard controller, compare the exact model and platform with Epic’s April 2024 list. A negative match is a compatibility problem, not something that a Festival display toggle can solve. A positive match does not guarantee current behavior after later updates, so also check the manufacturer’s current compatibility guidance.

Rule out the known green-fret local-multiplayer issue
Epic’s v42.00 update notes identify a specific problem in which the green fret on guitar peripherals can stop responding during local multiplayer in Pro Lead or Pro Bass. This is an input fault with a narrow symptom. It does not explain every guitar that fails to appear, every missing Pro option or every wireless connection problem.

- Reproduce the issue in the same local-multiplayer arrangement and note whether only the green fret fails.
- Test the guitar alone, outside local multiplayer, to see whether the fret responds there.
- Check later Fortnite release notes for a stated fix before changing hardware.
- Keep the symptom description precise when contacting the manufacturer: platform, guitar model, local-player count, Festival part and the specific green-fret failure.
Do not label a general detection failure as the v42.00 bug unless the observed behavior matches those conditions.
Understand the April 23, 2024 connection workaround
During a guitar-controller incident on April 23, 2024, Fortnite Festival Status suggested selecting a setlist with a normal controller and then pressing the orange button on the guitar to choose Pro Lead or Pro Bass and “wake it up.” That advice was tied to that incident, not published as a permanent repair procedure.
You may try the sequence if your symptoms are identical and the guitar is otherwise supported, but treat the result cautiously. A historical workaround does not establish that the current game build has the same defect, and it is not a substitute for checking the model, platform and receiver.
Decide whether hardware replacement is justified
Do not buy a new guitar simply because Pro Lead is hidden. First apply the Festival setting and verify that your existing model is listed for your platform. Replacement becomes reasonable when the model is explicitly unsupported, the required receiver is unavailable or the instrument has a reproducible physical fault after compatibility and software checks.

Use a compatibility decision checklist
- Exact model: Read the model designation from the instrument, receiver or manufacturer label.
- Platform: Match PlayStation, Xbox or PC exactly; do not substitute one console generation for another.
- Epic listing date: The commonly cited compatibility table is from April 23, 2024, so confirm current support before spending money.
- Receiver: Determine whether the model needs a proprietary dongle or the Microsoft Xbox One Wireless Adapter for Windows 10.
- Symptom: Separate a settings omission, platform mismatch, input bug and total non-detection.
- Manufacturer confirmation: Ask the hardware maker about current firmware, receiver pairing and platform support.
A listed controller, such as a RIFFMASTER model shown for designated platforms, is an example of dated compatibility evidence—not a promise that buying it will cure a Fortnite software issue. Likewise, the Xbox wireless adapter is a model-specific requirement, not a general-purpose solution for every guitar.

Epic says it does not test every external device. Some devices may not work with a particular console or mobile device, and Epic directs users to the hardware manufacturer for compatibility questions. Epic Player Support does not provide technical support for external-device issues.
When you contact the manufacturer, provide the information needed to distinguish pairing from game recognition:
Recommended Free Tools
- Full guitar and receiver model names
- Console model or Windows version
- Fortnite and Festival version, if shown
- Whether the device appears in the platform’s controller or accessory settings
- Whether Fortnite detects any buttons, only generic controller input, or no input
- Whether Always Display Pro Parts was enabled and applied
- Whether the failure occurs in solo play, local multiplayer or both
This level of detail prevents a generic “not working” report from being mistaken for the green-fret issue or a missing-display-setting problem.

Common mistakes that waste time
Assuming every Rock Band or Guitar Hero guitar works
Different generations use different wireless standards and console authentication. The instrument’s shape and brand family do not establish Festival compatibility.
Buying an adapter before checking the model
The Xbox One Wireless Adapter for Windows 10 is specified for certain Xbox Rock Band 4 Fender models on PC. It is not a universal adapter and cannot resolve an unsupported protocol.
Treating the Pro menu as a hardware diagnostic
Pro Lead and Pro Bass can be offered to keyboard/mouse and standard-controller players, while a supported guitar may hide those choices until the Festival setting is enabled. Use platform detection and physical-input tests as well as the menu.
Repeating an old workaround as a current guarantee
The orange-button “wake up” sequence came from an April 23, 2024 incident. Current builds may behave differently, so check present release notes and reproduce the symptom before relying on it.
Replacing hardware during a known software issue
If only the green fret fails in local multiplayer Pro Lead or Pro Bass, compare the symptom with Epic’s v42.00 issue and later fixes before concluding that the guitar is defective.
A complete test sequence
Use this order so each result narrows the cause without undoing a previous setting.
- Write down the exact guitar model, receiver model and platform.
- Disconnect unrelated controllers and connect the guitar or receiver directly.
- Confirm the platform recognizes the accessory and complete any manufacturer pairing process.
- Launch Fortnite and check whether the guitar is absent, generic or partially functional.
- In Festival Main Stage, open the profile/settings menu, choose Game, then Festival, enable Always Display Pro Parts and select Apply.
- Return to song selection and check for Pro Lead and Pro Bass.
- Play a short test and check strum, fret, whammy and any special controls.
- Repeat once in local multiplayer only if that is where the failure occurs; note any green-fret-specific behavior.
- Compare the exact model and platform with Epic’s April 2024 compatibility entries and the manufacturer’s current documentation.
- If the model is unsupported or a physical control fails outside the documented software symptom, pursue manufacturer service or a replacement that is explicitly listed for your platform.
Bottom line
Start with the symptom, not the shopping cart. Missing Pro parts usually warrant the Festival display-setting check; generic or absent detection requires model, platform, receiver and pairing verification; and a green-fret failure limited to local multiplayer may match Epic’s documented v42.00 issue. Epic’s April 2024 compatibility table is a useful but dated reference, and the Xbox wireless adapter applies only to the specified Xbox Fender models on Windows 10. If those checks do not resolve the problem, the manufacturer—not Epic Player Support—is the appropriate source for external-device troubleshooting.
