Fix a hot, slow, or crashing graphics card in this order: record the exact card and repeatable temperatures, inspect the cooling path, return any overclock or undervolt to factory settings, then investigate the graphics driver and BIOS. Stop and use the card maker’s or system builder’s support route if a fan fails, temperatures stay abnormal at stock settings, or crashes continue after these checks.

There is no single safe temperature number for every GPU. A card may report a current GPU temperature and a separate junction or hotspot temperature, and those sensors, limits, and fan controls vary by model and software version. Diagnose your card against its own technical specifications rather than treating a figure from another product as a universal cutoff.

First, identify what is actually failing

“Overheating” can describe several different problems. A graphics card may run at a high but expected temperature during a sustained workload, reduce its clock speed to stay within its control limits, or crash because of a driver, power, or hardware fault that happens to appear while the card is busy. Separating those cases prevents risky changes that do not address the cause.

Symptoms that point in different directions

What you observe What to check first Why it matters
Frame rates fall after several minutes of a demanding game or render GPU clock, utilization, current temperature, junction temperature, and fan speed during the same workload A sustained thermal limit can reduce clocks, but a power limit or workload change can look similar.
Black screen, freeze, hang, reboot, or a driver-reset message Driver version and release notes, recent tuning changes, power connections, and event logs Heat is only one possible cause; driver, power, and hardware faults can produce the same symptoms.
Temperature rises quickly while the fan stays at a low speed Fan RPM or percentage, fan-control settings, firmware, and physical obstruction A fan-control, wiring, firmware, or fan-motor problem can prevent cooling from responding to load.
High temperature while the PC is doing almost nothing Fan operation, case airflow, background GPU use, and whether the card supports a zero-RPM idle mode Idle behavior differs by card; a stopped fan can be normal at light load, while a non-responsive fan under load is not.
Crashes began immediately after a driver, BIOS, or tuning change Revert that change using the maker’s supported procedure A configuration change is a stronger lead than a temperature reading taken in isolation.

Establish a repeatable baseline before changing settings

Write down the exact graphics card model, operating system edition, game or application, and the point at which the problem appears. Note whether the issue began after a graphics-driver update, motherboard or system BIOS update, overclock, undervolt, custom fan curve, or hardware move. A prebuilt computer and a separately purchased card can have different support and warranty routes, so record the computer manufacturer as well.

Capture the same measurements every time

Use the card maker’s supported monitoring software where available. Run the workload that reliably reproduces the problem and record the readings before it starts, while it is occurring, and immediately afterward. Useful fields are:

  • GPU current temperature.
  • GPU junction or hotspot temperature, if the card exposes it.
  • Fan speed in RPM or percent.
  • GPU utilization and clock speed.
  • Power draw or board-power percentage when the software provides it.
  • Whether the application throttles, freezes, shows a black screen, reboots the computer, or returns to the desktop.

AMD’s Adrenalin documentation lists current GPU temperature, GPU junction temperature, and GPU fan speed as available metrics, but supported telemetry depends on the graphics product and software version. Label current and junction readings separately in your notes. They are different sensors and must not be compared as if they were the same value.

Do not apply a universal temperature cutoff

Official troubleshooting material does not establish one safe temperature threshold for every graphics card. Check the technical specification or support page for your exact model and interpret the reading in context: workload, ambient temperature, fan behavior, clock speed, and whether the value is a core or hotspot sensor. Intel’s Arc guidance includes a product-specific overheating example involving a reading around 90°C; that example is not a general rule that every GPU reaches a dangerous state at 90°C.

Inspect the physical cooling path with the PC powered off

Cooling checks are the safest first intervention because they do not alter firmware or driver state. Shut the computer down completely, switch off the power supply if it has a rear switch, unplug the power cable, and allow recently stressed components to cool. Do not reach into a running system or stop a fan with a finger.

Check case ventilation and accessible dust

  1. Look at the front, bottom, and rear intake or exhaust vents and remove dust from accessible filters according to the computer maker’s instructions.
  2. Inspect the graphics card heatsink and fan openings for a mat of dust, a loose object, or a cable touching the blades.
  3. Confirm that case fans spin freely and that their airflow direction still matches the case’s intended intake and exhaust pattern.
  4. Route loose cables away from the graphics card’s intake area and from every fan blade.
  5. Make sure the card has clear space to draw air. A card pressed against another expansion card or a blocked side panel may receive less cooling air than its design assumes.

An electric air duster can help move accessible case dust when used in accordance with the computer and card makers’ cleaning guidance. It is not a repair for a failed fan, a blocked heatsink that cannot be cleaned safely, or a damaged cooler. Hold fans so they do not spin freely from the air stream, and avoid forcing debris deeper into the card.

Verify the card and power cables are seated correctly

AMD’s system-stability guidance recommends checking that the graphics card is installed according to its maker’s instructions and that PCIe power connections are secure. With power removed, verify that the card is fully seated in its slot and that every required connector is latched. Do not use a cable or adapter combination that the card or power-supply maker does not support. If the system was recently transported, reseating the card and checking the bracket for strain can uncover a loose connection.

Use alternate cooling or power hardware only as a diagnostic

Intel’s Arc overheating guidance includes checking that the cooling system works and, where appropriate, testing another cooling system or power supply. Treat those as controlled diagnostic possibilities, not proof that the GPU is defective. Change one component at a time and keep the original configuration documented so you can identify which change affected the symptom.

Return every tuning control to factory defaults

Custom overclocks, undervolts, power limits, memory timings, and fan curves can make a card appear to have a thermal fault when the configuration is unstable. Restore factory defaults in the GPU maker’s control software, reboot, and repeat the baseline workload. If the card is stable at stock settings but fails with the custom profile, the profile—not necessarily the hardware—is the immediate cause.

Remove overclocks and undervolts before raising limits

Do not increase voltage or the power limit as a “cooling fix.” AMD’s tuning documentation explains that additional voltage increases power use and heat. AMD also warns that tuning can affect stability and warranty coverage, and that damage related to overclocking is not covered by its product warranty. Keep any later tuning conservative, reversible, and separately documented from your troubleshooting results.

Check fan-control behavior after the reset

Some cards intentionally stop their fans at light load and start them only after a temperature or workload threshold is reached. That behavior alone is not a fault. Under a repeatable heavy workload, however, the fan should respond according to the card’s control policy. Compare the reported fan speed with the temperature and clock behavior instead of assuming that a silent fan is either always normal or always broken.

Investigate drivers and BIOS after recording the baseline

If the card still overheats, throttles, or crashes at factory settings with an unobstructed cooling path, move to software. Use the graphics maker’s driver page for the exact GPU and operating system. Read the release notes for known issues, regressions, and required companion software before installing anything.

Clean-install or roll back the graphics driver when the timing fits

A clean installation is appropriate when files are corrupted or the vendor identifies a driver issue. If the problem began with a new driver and the release notes or repeat testing point to that version, revert to the prior stable version using the maker’s supported process. Record the old and new version numbers so a later support technician can reproduce the software state.

Intel’s Arc A580 troubleshooting article describes using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in Windows Safe Mode for a specific class of timeout-detection-and-recovery (TDR) crashes that can include freezes, hangs, black screens, and spontaneous reboots. That workflow is tied to the documented Arc scenario; it should not be presented as a mandatory fix for every GPU crash. Follow the exact instructions for your model and operating system, and create a restore point or other recovery option before removing a driver.

Update BIOS only through the system maker’s procedure

For Intel Arc overheating or compatibility problems, Intel recommends checking for updated graphics drivers and BIOS. A BIOS update must come from the motherboard or computer maker’s supported instructions, not from an unrelated model. Confirm the exact board or system model, keep stable power during the update, and do not interrupt the process. If the issue started immediately after a BIOS change, use the maker’s documented rollback or recovery path rather than flashing an image found for a similar board.

Interpret fan and temperature readings correctly

Current temperature and junction temperature answer different questions

The current GPU temperature is generally a sensor reading from the graphics processor, while junction or hotspot temperature represents the hottest monitored point when the card supports that sensor. A large difference between them can indicate uneven heat distribution or cooler contact, but the numbers cannot be judged without the card’s own specifications and control behavior. Compare each sensor with its own documented limits and with the fan and clock response.

A low fan speed during a rapid rise needs investigation

If the temperature climbs rapidly while the fan remains near the same low RPM, check the software fan curve, fan connector and wiring (where accessible), firmware, and physical obstruction. Intel documented an Arc firmware-specific case in which a fan could remain around 1,200 RPM while temperature rose quickly; its remedy applied only to the stated firmware and driver condition. Do not transfer that RPM value or fix to another card.

Test by workload instead of guessing from one number

Run a short, repeatable test in the game or application that exposes the problem, then compare it with a lighter workload. A sustained heavy load that causes clocks to fall after several minutes is different from an idle temperature issue, and both differ from an immediate black screen at launch.

For throttling under sustained load

  1. Start logging temperature, junction temperature, fan speed, utilization, and clocks before launching the workload.
  2. Run the same scene, benchmark section, or render for a consistent period.
  3. Mark the moment performance drops and check whether clocks fall while utilization and temperature rise.
  4. Repeat once at factory settings after the airflow inspection.

If the behavior disappears after cleaning or restoring defaults, keep the change that solved it and retest over a longer session. If clocks fall with temperatures that remain within the card’s documented operating behavior, investigate power or application limits rather than assuming the cooler is failing.

For crashes, black screens, or reboots

Record whether the failure happens only in one game, in several 3D workloads, or even at the desktop. A single application may have its own compatibility problem; failures across multiple workloads at stock settings increase concern about the driver, power delivery, or hardware. Check that every PCIe power connector is secure and that the power supply is appropriate for the card, then apply the exact driver and BIOS checks described above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this decision sequence to avoid circular troubleshooting

  1. Document the state. Write down the card model, operating system, workload, symptoms, driver and BIOS versions, tuning profile, and sensor readings.
  2. Reproduce safely. Use the same workload long enough to capture the change, and stop if you see smoke, an electrical smell, visible arcing, or rapidly escalating temperature.
  3. Power down and inspect. Clear accessible dust, free the fans and vents, tidy cables, confirm card seating, and secure PCIe power connections.
  4. Restore defaults. Remove overclocks, undervolts, custom fan curves, and altered power limits, then repeat the baseline.
  5. Apply model-specific software steps. Check the exact driver, release notes, clean-install or rollback guidance, and any system-maker BIOS update.
  6. Isolate one variable. If testing another power supply, cooling arrangement, driver, or workload, change one item and record the result.
  7. Escalate when the evidence points to hardware. Preserve your notes, purchase information, and configuration details for the card maker, system builder, or seller.

Know when to stop and request support

Stop home troubleshooting and contact the appropriate support channel when a fan does not respond under load, temperatures remain abnormal for the exact model after airflow checks, crashes continue at factory settings, or you find physical or electrical damage. Do not remove a cooler, reflash unofficial firmware, or continue stress testing a card that shows signs of a failing fan or damaged connector.

Choose the correct warranty route

Identify whether the card was purchased directly from the GPU maker, from a board partner or other seller, or as part of a prebuilt computer. The seller, card maker, and system builder may have different procedures and coverage periods. Keep the serial number, proof of purchase, model designation, and a concise record of the tests you performed.

NVIDIA states that its customer-care team can troubleshoot and process a replacement when a covered defect is confirmed. AMD’s warranty guidance routes customers differently for cards purchased directly from AMD, cards sold by partners, and cards installed in a computer. Those routes are examples of why the purchase path matters; follow the instructions for your own product and region.

Prevent a recurrence without creating a new instability

  • Keep case filters, vents, and accessible heatsink openings clear according to the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.
  • Leave unobstructed space around the graphics card’s intake and avoid cable bundles across its fans.
  • Keep a known-good factory profile so you can quickly compare any future tuning change with stock behavior.
  • When installing a driver or BIOS update, record the previous version and read the release notes first.
  • Monitor current and junction temperatures as separate values when your card supports both, and save a log when a problem appears.
  • Use a cleaning aid only for accessible dust and airflow maintenance; it cannot correct a failed fan, defective cooler, or damaged circuit.

Bottom line

A reliable fix comes from isolating the variable, not from chasing a universal temperature number. Establish a model-specific baseline, restore the physical airflow path, return the card to stock settings, and then apply the exact driver or BIOS procedure for that GPU and operating system. Persistent overheating, a non-responsive fan, or crashes at stock settings are reasons to stop experimenting and use the card maker’s or system builder’s support and warranty process.
